Top Corolla Advantages Over Cruze

While the Chevrolet Cruze is relatively new to the U.S. market, General Motors has actually been selling the car in markets such as Asia, Europe and Africa since 2009, so it’s not as new as it seems. Here, the Cruze replaces the Chevrolet Cobalt with a larger, more powerful and more refined vehicle that promises to be a more formidable competitor for Toyota’s venerable Corolla.

This Edge compares the two vehicles and highlights Corolla’s many strong points. And after reviewing the data, you will come to understand why Corolla has been the best-selling subcompact in America for the last nine years.

The Cruze is offered in five grades. The entry-level LS is powered by a normally aspirated 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, while all other models are available with the turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder. Both power plants generate comparable horsepower, but the turbo makes 25 lb.-ft. more torque at a low 1,850 rpm.

Also of note: The ECO model comes fitted with body panels that, among other features, contribute to the top EPA fuel economy rating in the Cruze line.

Here’s a look at some of the major features in the range.

Toyota Advantage

MSRP1 $18,670 $20,220 $1550

Lower five-year Ownership Cost

When considering things like depreciation, maintenance, repairs and fuel, IntelliChoice 2 estimates that Corolla will be more than $3,000 less expensive to own than Cruze over five years of ownership. The most recent data are for 2011 models, but Corolla’s advantage may get even better because Cruze prices have gone up significantly for 2012.

Lower cost at purchase

Both models come well equipped in standard configuration, including automatic transmission. But Corolla LE’s many comfort and convenience features are offered at a lower MSRP1 than Cruze 1LT. This means real money in the customer’s pocket at the time of purchase.

Proven Drivetrain

Corolla uses an engine and transmission that have been proven and refined over many years. Cruze 1LT uses a very small engine that requires a turbocharger and six-speed transmission to achieve comparable performance. Corolla’s traditional technology and lack of turbo lag will be reassuring for many consumers.
