2012 Corolla vs. 2012 Honda Civic
Top Corolla Advantages Over Civic
Corolla vs. Civic is one of the classic matchups of the automotive world. And there’s no denying the new-generation 2012 Civic is as tough a competitor as the outgoing model was. It’s one of the few cars with the reputation and credibility to make it an automatic “must see” for most shoppers in this segment.
But the 2012 Corolla is more than up to the challenge. Its combination of engineering features and value clearly set it apart from Civic. Corolla is still considered the gold standard, as this Edge makes clear.
Look inside for detailed info about this summary, important safety information and disclaimers.
PASSENGERS PAMPERED Civic buyers are forced to move up the model’s range to gain many of the comfort and convenience features that are standard on the popular Corolla LE.
•Fully featured Everywhere you look, Corolla impresses with its abundance of creature comforts either not available on Civic or only on higher Civic grades.
•Sophisticated electronics Corolla LE’s standard audio system is more sophisticated than that in Civic LX, with more speakers and more communications options.
•Available moonroof This feature is only available on higher-priced Civic EX and EX-L grades.
FEATuRES FOR DRiviNG A car has to work in a wide variety of environments. Corolla includes features that give a driver extra confidence when driving conditions change.
•Heated sideview mirrors Corolla’s heated mirrors help reduce frost buildup. Civic LX doesn’t have this feature.
•Larger brakes Corolla’s brakes are larger than Civic’s, which may help provide more consistent braking performance after hard or extended use.
•Bigger wheels and tires Corolla LE has wheels and tires that are one full size bigger than Civic LX’s—for more contact with the road.
TOyOTA vALuE Toyota and Honda both have great reputations for value. However, in a head-to-head match, Corolla usually has a lower MSRP1. Plus, its savings continue long after the purchase.
•Lower MSRP Corolla LE’s MSRP1 is more than $700 less than Civic LX’s when equipped with automatic transmission.
•Toyota Care included Corolla savings continue with the included Toyota Care complimentary scheduled factory maintenance and roadside-assistance program. Honda doesn’t have a similar program.
•The best seller Americans have voted with their wallets, and last year Corolla was the best-selling subcompact in the United States for the ninth year in a row.
ADvANCED ENGiNEERiNG Corolla takes advantage of some of the latest in automotive engineering to achieve an optimum balance of efficiency and performance.
•Sophisticated DOHC engine Civic has i-VTEC, but it’s mated with an SOHC valvetrain. Corolla uses a DOHC design.
•Dual vvT-i Corolla’s engine independently adjusts intake and exhaust valve timing for better combustion efficiency. Civic’s i-VTEC doesn’t have independent control.

Honda has an extensive range of Civic models, including a hybrid with Honda’s IMA system, a natural-gas version, a special high-fuel-economy version (Civic HF) and the sport-specialty Si. This Edge, however, focuses on the mainstream sedan grades that make up the majority of sales.

Savings at point of purchase
Toyota is very generous when it comes to loading up Corolla with standard features. For example, Corolla L includes air conditioning and an audio system. Civic DX doesn’t. Yet the MSRPs1 are about same or lower for Corolla’s three grades than for the corresponding Civic models.
 ADvANCED ENGiNEERiNG
Sophisticated DOHC engine
Most small engines today use a dual-overhead- cam design to help maximize efficiency and reduce emissions. However, Civic still uses a less-sophisticated single-overhead-cam design. And that means one camshaft is responsible for opening and closing all 16 valves. On Corolla, there is one camshaft assigned to the intake valves, and one to the exhaust valves—so one shaft isn’t doing all the work.
ToyotaCare and roadside assistance3
Corolla includes a complimentary two-year or 25,000-mile worry-free factory scheduled maintenance plan that Civic doesn’t offer. Plus Corolla buyers get the peace of mind that comes with roadside assistance for two years, with unlimited mileage.

Dual VVT-i
Honda likes to tout its i-VTEC engine’s variable valve timing. But Honda adjusts for intake efficiency only. Toyota’s Dual VVT-i does it better by independently optimizing both intake and exhaust valve timing for fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.
