2011–2012 | AnnuAl Fund ResouRce Book

Thank you for volunteering for Deerfield! This year we will once again set the tone by raising $5.3 million for the Annual Fund in the first year of our five-year comprehensive campaign, Imagine Deerfield. The campaign endeavors to raise $200 million on behalf of our students and teachers. Over the campaign period, The Annual Fund will cumulatively be the largest donor—a share anticipated to exceed $40 million. It’s true that our work makes Deerfield’s plans come alive.

Our volunteer leadership weekend on campus in April 2011 focused on reunion classes and current parents as the catalyst for this bold goal. Our contingent met with the Board of Trustees to learn more about the key objectives of the comprehensive campaign and to strategize outreach to peers. I ask that you now add your strength and resolve to our important work because it fuels Deerfield’s future: prepared and confident students and teachers in Deerfield’s classrooms, residences and fields of play.

This is my sixth and final year as Annual Giving National Chair and Trustee and I am proud of our results to date. My lasting memories, however, will be of all of the people who make Deerfield such an exceptional place and indeed a wonderful family. Thank you for keeping Deerfield a personal priority and for making this first campaign year a fitting launch of Deerfield’s bright future.

All the best,

Gordon R. “Zeke” Knight ’54, G’03 Annual Giving National Chair Trustee

Our Comprehensive Campaign, Imagine Deerfield, will raise $200 million in support of students and teachers. Specifically, expect to hear more about the following areas:

Emphasis for Students on:

Customized Academic ProgramsClassrooms & Critical ThinkingCharacter, Community & LeadershipGlobal PerspectiveCommunity Spirit, Community Space

Emphasis for Teachers on:

Deep CommitmentLeadership and CollaborationTeaching ExcellenceGlobal Perspective

The Annual Fund will be the largest donor to the comprehensive campaign and will ask our constituents to prioritize Deerfield in their philanthropy, especially reunion alumni and current parents.

The top three priorities of Imagine Deerfield are therefore those of the Annual Fund: 1. Renewing our Faculty

(to keep current with changing pedagogy)

2. Expanding the Faculty (to create time for collaboration)

3. Student Financial Aid (to admit the very best students)

We are able to implement these initiatives immediately because of the strength of our Annual Fund.

EXPANDING THE FACULTY

Faculty need time to deepen their knowledge, learn new technology, and think about new ways of teaching. We’ll invest in additional faculty to ensure that meaningful relationships with students continue to define the Deerfield experience, even as faculty engage these new challenges in the classroom, on the field, and on the corridor.

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT AND RENEWAL

The best teaching comes through a relentless pursuit of excellence. We’ll help our teachers identify new opportunities in their lessons—new tools, techniques, and pedagogies—by delivering more data, more feedback, and more structures for collaboration. The result will be a faculty—teachers, coaches, and mentors—that is collaborative and reflective about its practices and intentional about its professional growth.

STUDENT FINANCIAL AID

To promote Deerfield’s excellence, and to prepare students for leadership in a collaborative, global community, the Academy will significantly increase its financial aid budget, ensuring that we bring worthy students from every corner of the socioeconomic landscape.

What the Annual Fund Accomplishes

This year the Annual Fund will fund four new faculty hires and an increased financial aid budget to strengthen students and faculty. In turn the quality of student-teacher interactions on campus will rise, adding additional excellence to the Deerfield experience. Your work as an Annual Fund volunteer contributes measurably to maintaining Deerfield’s standard of excellence.

What Can You Do?

With over 525 alumni volunteers and 100 parent volunteers working on Deerfield’s behalf, the shared effort of so many loyal and talented people easily leads to success year after year. Your hard work, organization and persistence will directly affect the results for your class and ultimately for Deerfield. Thank you for joining the team!

How Do I Get My Classmates To Support Deerfield?

While there is no single “best” way to secure gifts for Deerfield, certain things do tend to lead to more success.

1. Give: Make your own gift or pledge before you begin your

calls. This makes it possible for you to invite every classmate to

join you in supporting Deerfield this year.

2. Prepare: Know who you plan to call and what you

would like them to give. Consult the online reporting tool

deerfield.edu/go/ORT before calling. Familiarize yourself

with current information about Deerfield so that you feel

confident talking about the school of today.

3. Ask: Most people simply do not give until they are asked.

4. Thank. Thank your classmate for the conversation no

matter how long or short, and pass on relevant information

to Annual Giving staff. The personal touch is by far the best

use of your time.

Your organization, determination and follow through will

directly affect the results for your class. Thank you for

“making the ask” for Deerfield. We simply could not sustain

our excellence without you.
