Culver-Stockton Col-lege held a symposium Oct. 26 and 27, commem-orating the impact of the Civil War era on the col-lege, the Canton commu-nity and surrounding area. High school students had the opportunity to visit the college to see the displays and learn about the Civil War time period. The pub-lic was invited to the cam-pus during the afternoon.

During the beginnings of the Civil War, in July 1861, Union soldiers oc-cupied Christian Univer-sity (now Culver-Stockton College) for two weeks.

C-SC holds Civil War symposium

Approximately two months later, the college was occupied for a second time.

It was during those initial occupations of the campus that Union sol-diers used Old Main [Hen-derson Hall] as a headquar-ters, hospital, recruiting station and perhaps even a prison. Those that oc-cupied the college caused a great deal of damage to the building and surround-ing campus. The college would not reopen for stu-dents until 1865.

The program, 1861: The College, The Com-munity, The War, was held Oct. 26 at the Lewis Street Playhouse for persons in-terested in the Civil War

era. Culver-Stockton Pro-fessor Patrick Hotle wel-comed the audience and introduced the speakers. Terrell Dempsey spoke on Missouri, Slavery and the Civil War. Dempsey is an attorney and the author of Searching For Jim: Slavery in Sam Cle-men’s World. He is cur-rently working on a study of Quincy Abolitionists before the war. Scott Gilt-ner presented The War in Canton, Missouri. Giltner is Associate Professor of History at Culver-Stock-ton. He is the author of Hunting and Fishing in the New South: Black Labor and White Leisure After the Civil War.

War and Mayhem in Northeast Missouri, 1861-1862 was the topic for speaker Roger Boyd.

Boyd was the Historic Site Administrator at the Battle of Athens State Historic Site from 1987-2008. His education and training has focused on American His-tory and archaeology. He conducted archaeological research at the Battle of Athens site.

On Oct. 27, the college campus was the site of a view of how life was like during the Civil War. Sta-tions were set up and in-cluded The 3rd Iowa Cav-alry re-enactors, artillery, a Civil War hospital, The Life of a Civil War sol-dier, Civil War music and dance and food samplings. The 1816 Symposium Museum presented period artifacts and interpreta-tions of the war in Canton.

Scott E. Giltner, Ph.D., Associate Professor of

History at Culver-Stock-ton College, said “I think it was a great couple of days for Culver-Stockton College. We had per-haps as many as 180 high school students on cam-pus October 27 and they seemed to really enjoy the day. It was a wonder-ful opportunity for them to both learn about the Civil War in an engaging way and learn more about Culver-Stockton and the benefits of our focus on experiential learning. We really hope that the 1861 symposium encouraged our visitors to learn more about the war and its im-pact on their home region. And we know that it was a great showcase for all that Culver-Stockton has to of-fer.”

Former Canton Police Chief William Hudnall was sentenced to three

years probation, five months of home confine-ment and 40 hours of community service for the purchase of a firearm at a Canton gun shop.

The sentence was an-nounced Tuesday by the United States Attorney’s Office.

In August Hudnall, 48, admitted making a false statement on the firearms transaction record form to obtain the .45 caliber

firearm for an individual known by Hudnall to be a convicted felon and, there-fore, prohibited from pos-sessing a firearm.

United States District Judge Audrey G. Fleissig heard the case, which was investigated by the Feder-al Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobac-co, and Firearms and the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.

Culver-Stockton College will host the master ceramic works of the art-ist Bede Clarke beginning Thursday, Nov. 3, in the Mabee Art Gallery, in the Herrick Foundation Center. An opening reception will be tonight (Thursday, Nov. 3) at 7 p.m., with a gallery talk at 7:30 p.m.

In addition to serving as professor of art at the University of Missouri, Clarke displays his works in a num-ber of group and solo exhibitions. His most recent exhibitions include, Red Lodge Clay, Red Lodge, Mont.; Red Star Studios, Kansas City, Mo.; Ar-varda Center for the Arts and Humani-ties, Arvarda, Colo.; and Ogden Muse-um of Southern Art, New Orleans, La.

In describing his work Clarke says, “My goal in making this work has been to create quiet, simple pots, which like a good meal, leave a healthy, full feel-ing.”

The gallery show runs through Fri-day, Dec. 16. Admission is free and the exhibit is open to the public.

Canton resident has sports photo display in St. Louis University museum

C-SC to host works of artist Bede Clark

LaGrange fire call was minor

By Dan Steinbeck, [email protected]

Some 75 photos taken through the years by Lew Portnoy now of Canton, are on display at the St. Louis University Muse-um of Art.

Portnoy began as a staff photographer for the St. Louis Blues in 1966 and has covered virtually ev-ery sport.

“I’ve shot everything but sumo wrestling,’ Port-noy said.

He has professionally covered major baseball, basketball, golf, tennis, Super Bowls, NASCAR, and Olympics. Clients such as NBC and Anheus-er-Busch had employed him as a photographer.

Portnoy said he changed hockey with his use of strobe lights at games. Portnoy said because of this, the National Hockey League changed uniform colors.

“The quality of light did not exist (before the strobes),” Portnoy said.

He has literally shots tens of thousands of pho-tos, including 100,000 for hockey, which are her-metically sealed in a vault in Toronto, Canada. Most were shot on Kodachrome 64. He feels film offered a better representation of light than the modern dig-ital process.

“By 1995, I was no lon-ger covering 200 events

a year,” Portnoy said. “I was disenchanted with publications.”

This was not so much because of competition – calling it a game with fel-low photographers – but with magazines repub-lishing his photos, with-out permission or com-pensation. He equated working for sports maga-zines “being a hooker or whore.”

“I had 200 magazine covers in 1972 and I spent most of the next two years trying to collect my mon-ey for those pictures,” he said.

He enjoyed the art of photography and with partner Lois Constanz of Canton, traveled to vari-ous sport venues. A plac-ard near his exhibit offers tribute to Constanz.

In recent years, photog-raphy projects have in-cluded multi-milion dol-lar homes, Canton area photos, and family cats.

It has been years since Portnoy has done a photo show, and after consid-eration, agreed with St. Louis University to do the show. He sent museum direction Petruta Lipan 180 pictures, and it was narrowed to 75.

Portnoy was amazed at classic paintings hang-ing elsewhere in the same museum. Portnoy’s ex-hibit called “In Motion” continues through No-vember 20.

Lew Portnoy, right and his long-time Canton partner Lois Con-stanz, stand outside the St. Louis University Museum of Art, where his photo exhibit “In Motion” is on display. The exhibit includes 75 photos from the many years the two traveled to numerous pro-fessional sporting events covering games for high-profile clients.

What could have been severe turned to be a minor fire call Oct. 27.

According to LaGrange Fire Chief Henry Gunsauls, the LaGrange police reported heavy smoke about 8 p.m. at the LaGrange Lion’s Hall, and La-Grange and Canton Fire Departments were called for a possible structure fire at the Lion’s Hall.

However, no fire was found at the Lion’s Hall. Gunsauls said the smoke seemed to be in the area of Bunge’s Grain Elevator. Bunge’s officials later found a motor had burned out.

Grain dust in such elevators can be volatile, as was evidenced in a week-end explosion in Atchison Kansas.

Hannibal Regional Medical Group will hold free cataract screenings in November.

These will be held in Lewis County at the Can-ton facility. Appointments are needed and people may call 573-288-5360.

A cataract is the cloud-ing of the eye’s natural lens behind the iris and pupil. It can interfere with normal vision. Usually, they develop in people over age 55, but can devel-op in infants and children. Signs and symptoms can be blurred/hazy vision, re-duced color intensity, in-creased sensitivity to glare from lights, particularly at night, and increased diffi-culty seeing at night.

Free cataract screenings to be held

The St. Peter’s Luther-an Church in LaGrange recently installed Pastor Ken Tatkenhorst as the new pastor. He replaces Rev. Paul Lohse who re-cently retired and moved to Arizona.

Tatkenhorst and his wife Gloria moved to LaGrange from Sedalia, Mo., where he had been a pastor at St. Paul’s. He wanted to semi-retire and move to a smaller church and the LaGrange Luther-an fits that desire. The Tat-kenhorst’s have been mar-ried almost forty years. The couple have three married children and four grandchildren. The move to the area, puts them a little closer to two of their children. Pastor Ken says he grew up in a small town and Gloria is from the city. They are finding the com-munity a very friendly and safe place to reside. They are thankful and appreci-ate their nice home next

to the church. Pastor Ken hopes to be able to reach out to the community. He became a pastor because he thought it was the best way to show the love of Christ to others.

The congregation is finding the couple to be very musically talented. Pastor Ken plays the or-gan and his wife plays the accordion. The commu-nity is invited to greet the Tatkenhorsts at the Com-munity Thanksgiving ser-vices to be held on Nov. 22 at 6:30 at the Lutheran Fellowship Hall. The La-Grange churches have this annual service each year during the Thanksgiving holiday. Pastor Ken will provide the message. The St. Peter’s Lutheran and the Green Chapel Church choirs will perform.

The annual St. Peter’s Lutheran Church smor-gasbord and bazaar will be held this Saturday, Nov. 5 with the bazaar beginning at 2 p.m. and smorgasbord serving starts at 4:30 p.m.

This annual feast is always well attended and deli-cious food is served.

Pastor Ken Tatkenhorst and Gloria are enjoying taking walks to the Mis-sissippi River down the hill from their new home

and church and look for-ward to meeting members of the community. Pas-tor Ken said the members of the congregation and citizens of the town have been very friendly and made them feel welcome.

Just how did infomer-cials become so popular? How did they even start? If they were TV shows we’d call them reruns. They say the same things again and again in a 30-minute spot. Everyone reads the same script. For some of them we can order the DVD, which will tell us the same information again.

For example, imagine how it was when the first round pencil was adver-tised on infomercials.

Narrator, as the actions described bring momen-tary angst: “Tired of hav-ing to prick your finger to write a message? Does using your quill leave un-wanted ink spots on your document? Are those six-sided graphite pencils dif-ficult to hold?”

Narrator, as new fan-gled round pencil is in-troduced with positive re-sults: “Then try our round pencil when composing your postal letters.”

Good-looking spokes-person 1: “I used to have ink stains on my docu-ments, plus on my cloth-ing, and then I was intro-duced to the round pencil. I’m sold on this product.”

on six-sided pencils used to irritate my fingers, but with the round pencil, my fingers easily glide around the surface.”

Narrator, to those too dumb to understand the message so far: “Hun-dreds of people have found round surface easier on the fingers. Many more are getting rid of quill feather pens. Now you too can join the crowd. For only five cents, you’ll get the genuine round wood-en pencil, with genuine graphite, and equipped with a stylish pink rubber eraser. With the attached eraser, the genuine graph-ite is easy to remove when mistakes are made.”

But, if you order now, you’ll receive two round pencils for only five cents. That’s TWO wooden pen-cils, rounded to reduce splinters, with genuine graphite to eliminate ink spills, and each adequately equipped with a certified metal ring holding a qual-ity pink eraser. One of the biggest po-litical demonstrations ever pulled off in this county

was the observance of Wilson Day last Saturday. Two processions started about the same time. There were 25 cars in the parade (on the north route) when it arrived at Williamstown at 12:30. The parade ar-rived at LaBelle at 5:45. LaGrange, Maywood, Durham, Ewing, Steffen-ville, Lewistown, and La-Belle were visited on the south route. At 8 p.m. at LaBelle speakers closed one of the biggest Demo-cratic rallies ever pulled off in the county.

Sixteen cars of Wilson boosters passed through Durham Saturday. Dur-ham people had not been informed of their coming, so they did not receive a very cordial welcome here, and no address was made by Hon. Jeffries at this place. They took our citizens by surprise.

As I slip a pair of John Deere, camo socks on my son Ryan’s feet, I am re-minded of my brief stint as a farmer. Once upon a time in 2006 I worked as a farm hand, west of La Plata, Mo. The difference between that farm and many others is that we, Farmer Cun-ningham and me, cared for animals versus crops.

And on that farm we had some elk, horses, cows, goats, pigs, dogs, and a few chicks. I am sad to re-port though that free range chickens and certain free range dogs just don’t mix well. I also witnessed the good, the bad, and the ugly of being care takers for the living, growing beings we were invested in. Beyond a financial investment, these were God’s creatures with whom we were charged to care for. That is why when one would fall ill or even lose its life, there would be shared sorrow on the farm.

But my fondest memo-

Down on the Farmries of farm life were of the great outdoors. Those rolling hills provided a picturesque setting for early morning sunrises and hot cups of coffee. Each day I could fill my lungs with cool, clear, country air. And whatever the tasks at hand, from feeding the various animals, to riding and breaking in the horses, and even fence mending, each day seemed fresh and alive and served up its own new set of challenges.

As I reminisce about those days, I can thank God for the opportunity to experience farm life at least once in my lifetime. Quite frankly, I grew up physically, mentally, and spiritually during that pe-riod. You might even say the farm was a launching pad for the rest of my life. Alright Ryan, keep your socks on, ‘cause life it-self is as big as a farmer’s dream.

WINNIE BELLE MULLINS Winnie Belle Mullins, age 89, of Las Vegas, NV and formerly of Wilmington, OH, Columbia and Canton, MO died peacefully at 6:40 a.m. Monday August 1, 2011 in Las Vegas. Winnie was born June 22, 1922 on the family farm north of Canton. She was the daughter of Charles Robert and Gertrude Hanna Hatchitt. Around March 1944 she met Col. William P. Mullins in the Panama Canal Zone and on December 6, 1944 she married him in Lincoln, Nebraska. Col. Mullins was a B29 Squadron Command-er during WWII in the Paci c and later became USAF Attaché at the US Embassy in Bangkok, ailand. He died Feb. 13, 1992. Winnie graduated from Gem City Business College in 1941. She was a beloved and loving wife, mother, and friend. She touched many people’s lives, had a great skill and passion for bridge, was a mem-ber of the Baptist Church, and was a world traveler. Winnie is remembered by her family, friends, and acquaintances for her smile, sweetness, quick wit, feisty spirit, being as stub-born as a Missouri Mule, thoughtfulness, etc. Winnie is survived by her only child William A. Mullins of Las Vegas. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brother Charles Allen Hatchitt and sister Gertrude King Bramlett. Graveside services will be held Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. in Forest Grove Cemetery in Canton, MO with Pastor Amanda Ross o ciating. Immediately following the service there will be a time of gathering, fellowship and meal at the Saints Avenue Café in Canton. No owers or memorials are suggested, however, expressed written or verbal memories of Winnie would be appreciated. Local arrangements are being handled by Davis Funeral Home, Canton, MO. Online condolences may be le at www.davis- .com or emailed to Bill Mullins at [email protected].

Although “thank you” doesn’t begin to say it all, the family of Gene Dudgeon would like to thank all who sent cards, visited, sent owers, donated to memo-rials, brought food and all other acts of kindness shown to us at the passing of Gene. e list is long and, if we omit anyone, please know we heard your words, felt your presence, were comforted by your prayers. Mere words don’t seem ad-equate to express our gratitude and appreciation for the wonderful care given to Gene over the years by the nurses, doctors and sta at Hannibal Regional Hospital, to the sta and administration at Country Aire Retirement Estates Residential Care, to Dr. Childress, to the ladies of Park Methodist Church for the delicious lunch served and to Pastors Delbert and Olivia Earlywine for the words that truly came from their heart and letting the great-grandsons know ‘it’s okay for men to cry’. A heartfelt “thank you” for the honor guard, the ladder truck with the American ag ying high, the “last bell ceremony” and the yellow re truck that led the funeral procession provided by the Western Lewis County Fire Department, and to the Emmett J. Shields American Legion Post 55 and the Lt. Kenneth Lee Coontz V. F. W. Post 2446 for the military service. A nal “thank you” to the sta at Grandview Funeral Home for making a very stressful time a little less di cult. Everyone’s kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity will for-ever be remembered.

Fantastic Furniture recently opened at 507 Clark, Canton, Owners Linda Duncan and Amber Campen will host a grand opening, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 4 and 5 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Linda Duncan, who is a professional home stager and designer, said she has always wanted to own a business that deals in home furnishings and utilizes her decorating abilities. She likes the community and plans to move from Peo-ria. She and her niece, Amber Campen, purchased the business, the Ole Furni-ture Warehouse, from Diane and Robert LaFrenz, longtime business owners in the Canton community. Amber Campen and her husband John, have three chil-dren, and with the youngest child hav-ing recently started school, she has time to devote to the business. The pair have been very busy the last few weeks pre-paring the store for opening.

On display are many types of fur-niture and home décor, beautifully ar-ranged so that shoppers can get an idea of how it would look in their own home. The new owners will be glad to share tips, ideas and advice on decorating.

Discount items are always offered and there is a continuous clearance and garage sale section. They plan to change the inventory often and have available décor to suit a wide variety of tastes. Collectibles, costume jewelry, unique pieces, mirrors, wall groupings and the little extras that make a home special can be found at Fantastic Furniture. Season-

Thank You...The November fire-arms deer season is on the horizon, and the Missouri Department of Conserva-tion reminds hunters of changes to deer and tur-key permits and tagging procedures that went into effect this year.

The November fire-arms deer hunt starts Nov. 12. This year is the first time that Missouri hunt-ers can buy deer and other hunting permits online, print them and use them immediately. As in the past, hunters can continue to buy permits from hun-dreds of vendors state-wide.

Vendors still are print-ing permits on the famil-iar yellow plastic material that has been used in the past. However, the for-mat has changed and no longer includes a separate self-adhesive tag. With-in a couple of years, all permits will be issued on plain paper.

The new format now includes a one piece tag with dates printed on it. Upon bagging a deer or turkey, the hunter must immediately notch the date the animal was taken and also attach the entire tag to the animal immedi-ately before transporting. As in the past, the ani-mal must be telechecked before processing and no later than 10 p.m. of the day taken.

McArdle reminds hunters of changes in the deer

tagging proceduresThese tagging chang-

es are explained in the 2011 Fall Deer and Tur-key Hunting Regulations and Information booklet, which is available wher-ever permits are sold or at mdc.mo.gov/node/3656. MDC also has a Web page (mdc.mo.gov/node/3891) explaining the procedure.

For other questions or concerns, contact Lewis County Conservation Agent Brock McArdle at 573-822-5178.

Step 1: Bag it. Protect paper e-Permits in a plastic sandwich bag while afield.

Step 2: Notch it. Imme-diately after harvesting a deer, notch the month and date of harvest on your permit.

Step 3: Tag it. Attach the notched permit to the deer's leg. We recommend sealing the permit in a plastic sand-wich bag and attaching the bag to the animal’s leg with string, twist-ties, wire or tape. You may now legally transport your deer within Missouri.

Hoffman receives American FFA Degree

Step 4: Check it. Report your deer by 10 p.m. on the day of harvest using the Telecheck system. Write the confirmation number provided by Tel-echeck on your permit. You may now process your deer, or transport it out of state.
