Express Yourself

PLI Essential – Masterful Communication, Innovativeness, Skill AssessmentObjective – To express yourself in a creative exerciseTime Needed – 30 – 60 minutesMaterial Needed – Sheet of paper and pen for each studentDebrief Possible – Self-expression. The best at it apply on a few filters between thought and product. You can also debrief it using creativity, self-confidence, communication and/or work ethic.Step-by-Step Instructions1. Each student gets a sheet of paper and a pen. 2. They are working individually and get five minutes to “do something creative” with or on their

paper. Give examples if you would like: draw something, write something, shape something, etc.

3. After they finish, ask them to take 10 minutes to prepare a presentation to the class. This presentation will include why they created what they did and what they created.

PLI ACTIVITIY EXAMPLE

Picture This Not That

PLI Essential – Fostering Relationships, Masterful CommunicationObjective – To draw a picture as a team without seeing it.Time Needed – 30 minutesMaterial Needed – One sheet of paper and a pen for each teamWhen not to do it – When there is less than 10 studentsDebrief Possible – How messages can be distorted as they pass from person to person. This highlights the importance of learning how to communicate simple/complex, dry/emotional, short/lengthy information.Step-by-Step Instructions1. Place students in teams of 8-10 people. 2. Send one person from each team outside to meet with you.3. The rest of the team stands in a circle formation. One person is holding a paper and pen.4. Outside you tell the team leaders to go inside and draw an object - house, bicycle, human,

airplane - on one person's back on their team with their finger. Only one object at a time. They start with the first one (house), go inside and draw, go back out to get the next one, back inside to draw, etc.

5. That person then draws the same picture on the back of the person in front of them. 6. This continues until it gets to the person with the paper/pen and they must draw what is being

drawn on their back.7. Compare that drawing to what the team leader first drew.8. No talking through the entire process.

PROVING THE VALUE

Convincing your administration to support your leadership class is an important, yet sometimes daunting task. You believe deeply in the power studying and practicing leadership skills can have in a student’s life. You are skilled at helping your students understand how to be better leaders in their home, school and community. Your passion, your skills and student leadership are all important, but just as important is your ability to communicate the value of all three. Bringing to life the concepts and principles in the PLI curriculum is a life changing experience. It can be used in either a project based or theory based leadership class. The following list contains ideas you can use to demonstrate the tremendous value of the PLI curriculum and your leadership class to your administration.

How to earn the support of your administration.

The PLI curriculum provides a well-rounded leadership study because it is built on the foundation of the Ten PLI Essentials: Vision, Integrity, Innovativeness, Wise Judgement, Service Mindedness, Goal Processing, Skill Assessment, Emotional Maturity, Fostering Relationships, and Masterful Communication.Leadership and life skills comprise 85% of the reason why someone gets, keeps and advances in a good job.Life is good when relationships are good. Leadership study is primarily about managing and improving relationship skills. The knowledge of English, Math, Geography, Foreign Languages, etc. are only as valuable as a student’s work ethic and commitment to learning allows them to be. The through-line of the PLI curriculum is “creating value and growth” as stated in the definition of Personal Leadership Insight: An individual’s understanding of how to positively influence people and situations to create value and growth. The PLI curriculum includes hands-on leadership projects designed to engage the students in improving their home life, peers, school, community and world. I.e. – your leadership class produces positive change via an action-based learning methodology.
