2011 ANNUAL REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
Thanks to all who partner with us—as blood
donors, blood drive sponsors, financial
contributors, and volunteers—this past
year we made a real difference in the lives
of as many as 400,000 of our friends,
neighbors, family members, and others
living in the communities we serve!
Every day, we hear stories of courage
and survival that demonstrate the impact
donated blood has on the lives of others.
And every one of those stories reminds us
again and again how life can change in an
instant. From natural disasters to emergency
procedures and life-long battles with chronic
diseases such as cancer, a stable and safe
blood supply is essential to ensuring the
health and well-being of our community.
When every two seconds someone needs
blood, engaging everyone in saving and
sustaining lives is our mission. Throughout our
2010-2011 fiscal year, you were there with us
every step of the way. And we are extremely
grateful for your support and your continuing
belief in the work we do. Thank you.
Dear colleagues and supporters
THOMAS BECKER, M.D., BOARD CHAIR AND
DONALD C. BERGLUND, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
DONALD C. BERGLUND, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER THOMAS BECKER, M.D., BOARD CHAIR
A 60-year legacy of commitment to the community
Among Minnesota’s oldest
and largest community-
based non-profit blood
centers, Memorial Blood
Centers has been saving
and sustaining lives for over
60 years. Firmly rooted in the
communities we serve, we currently supply over
30 area hospitals and other partners throughout
the U.S. with a safe and stable blood supply.
Through effective outreach to donors, continual
development of biomedical expertise, and
collaborative partnerships with blood drive
sponsors, health care facilities, and global
medical providers, we connect those who
need blood with the generous volunteers
who give, and deliver the highest level of
technical expertise and laboratory testing
services to customers around the world.
HUBERT H. HUMPHREY, FORMER VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE
UNITED STATES AND MAYOR OF MINNEAPOLIS IN 1948,
WAS AMONG THE FIRST TO DONATE A PINT OF BLOOD.
MBC MISSION: TO HELP SAVE LIVES BY PROVIDING BLOOD AND BIOMEDICAL SERVICES
THANKS TO THE MINNESOTA VIKINGS AND PLAYER
JASPER BRINKLEY, A NEW VOICE IS ON THE AIRWAVES
AND ONLINE, ENCOURAGING ELIGIBLE BLOOD DONORS
TO STEP UP AND HELP YOUNG PEOPLE LIKE TREY
BLAYLARK LIVING WITH SICKLE CELL DISEASE.
A community of volunteers
Hundreds of thousands of people are alive
today because community partners and
financial contributors, blood donors and
recipients, volunteers and blood drive sponsors
joined together to advance our mission to
help save lives through blood donation.
• Loyal and first-time blood donors rolled
up their sleeves to give nearly 130,000
units of blood.
• 200 volunteers donated over 8,000 hours of
valuable time as café hosts, greeters, blood
transport drivers, and ambassadors.
• Corporations and hospitals, schools,
civic groups, places of worship and other
local organizations sponsored more than
2,100 blood drives.
• Foundations, grantors, businesses, and
individuals opened their hearts to help
fund our high school student outreach
programs, recruitment efforts for specialty
donations, and the purchase of a new
bloodmobile.

Making a difference
An estimated 200,000 Minnesotans are
living with a history of cancer. For many who
have undergone years of treatment, only a
transfusion of specially matched platelets can
provide the life-saving help they need to survive.
Now, thanks to the Fred C. and Katherine
B. Andersen Foundation, we are making an
even greater difference in the lives of patients
facing an ongoing battle with this disease.
The Foundation’s $50,000 grant this past
year helped recruit 560 new Apheresis
Angels—generous donors whose platelets
are extensively tested and typed, are
registered in our database and, when
called upon, have agreed to make a special
donation to meet a specific patient’s
time-sensitive need for platelets.
WITH THEMED T-SHIRTS AND FRIENDSHIP, 400 LOYAL
PLATELET DONORS CAME TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE
THE COMMUNITY OF LIFE-SAVING APHERESIS ANGELS.
We are on our way...with a new
addition to our bloodmobile fleet.
Thanks to thousands of financial
contributors the new full-service
bloodmobile is about to go into
service, expanding our capacity
to serve more blood donors,
collect as many as 8,000 more
units in its first year of operation
and, most importantly, help save
as many as 24,000 more lives.
Achieving operational excellence• 6% value increase in contributions made
by volunteers.
• 100% renewal of hospital and reference
laboratory customer contracts.
• Added 810 first-time Single Donor Platelet
(SDP) donors.
• Conducted extensive focus group research
to gain insight into blood donor behaviors and
motivators to drive strategic communication
and recruitment program development.
• Launched new values-based R.I.S.E.S.
Recognition Program to recognize
role model performance, strengthen
employee engagement, and support the
development of a world class workforce.

iDonate Interview, adding convenience
and privacy for blood donors when
completing their pre-donation health
history questionnaire.
• MBC.ORG upgrades included a mobile
version, online blood drive registrations,
volunteer applications, and more. We now
welcome nearly 10,000 visitors per month!
• Continued expansion of donor recruitment
and educational outreach through
social media—YouTube, Facebook
and Twitter—included campaigns to
build our fanbase among family and
friends, and engage existing and new

Local hospitals require over 2,000 units
each week to meet demand. And while
blood donations collected at MBC’s
11 donor centers help contribute to the
supply, blood drive sponsors play an even
more critical role hosting hundreds of
blood drives each month that empower
others to be life-saving heroes. Among our
many business and community partners,
we say thank you to the following:
