Run through the Holy City

When Kellermeister Wines duo Mark Pearce and Dave Rice decided to compete in the Jerusalem half marathon, they knew it would be essen-tial to put in the ‘hard yards’ and get the best support pos-sible in order to get across the line.

With little-to-no running expe-rience the pair had just six months to prepare for the gruelling 21km trek around one of the world’s hilliest

Welcome to the STARgazer team! My name is Candice Butler, the newest member to the STAR-

gazer team. Just a little bit about my background and the journey I have tak-en so far in my education, sporting and work life.

As a child, I grew up in Queensland, but moved to South Australia in 1999. I attended St Brigid’s Primary School and moved on to Xavier College for my high school years. My favourite subject throughout my schooling years was Physical Education, and I have always had a strong interest in living and pro-moting an active lifestyle and decided quite early in life that I wanted my career path to support that interest. After completing year 12, I was accept-ed at The University of South Australia to complete a Bachelor of Sport and Recreation Management.

I also participated in quite an active life-

style outside of school and university, playing netball, tennis and my passion, dancing. I started dancing as a 2 year old and have spent many years in the dance studio doing ballet, modern, tap, jazz, hip hop and pointe. In 2006 I became a dance teacher for my dance school and thoroughly enjoyed teaching little ballerinas how to pointe their toes and how to plie.

After completing my university degree, I happily joined the team at STARplex as a Lifestyle Consultant in November 2010. It’s great being able to put all the theory learnt at University to practice, as well as being a part of a wonderful, supportive, friendly community here at STARplex. Thank you all for the warm welcome!

Hello Readers,

STARplex has accepted an invitation from St Columba College at Andrews Farm to offer courts sports and fitness programs outside school hours in the College’s new sports stadium. Since the 2nd May 2011 Kevin Brooks from the STARplex Courts and Samantha Craig

from the STARplex Fitness Centre have been coordinating activities and programs at the site.

A survey to determine the St Columba community’s preferred group fitness activities was circulated to the 1400 students at the College on the 1st April 2011. The survey findings have resulted in a timetable of classes offered at times that suit par-ents and students. Classes include Zumba dance fitness, Pila-tes for posture improvement and STARfit Kids for 5 to 12 year olds.

The Adelaide Thunderbirds conducted a netball clinic for junior

players during the school holidays to commence the court sports program. During the school term netball, basketball and soccer junior and senior competitions together with STARplex “Badge” junior sports clinics will commence from 5.00pm each weekday as team and player registrations are lodged.

This project is a new initiative for STARplex and we hope that its success will have benefits for the community living close to St Columba College and for the wider STARplex community. I believe this initiative will provide opportunities to improve regional sports development for netball, basket-ball and soccer and enable more people to experience a healthier life through our quality fitness programs. It will also provide additional career pathways for capable STARplex staff who take up the challenge of extending our service into a new frontier.

Yours in Health and Fitness

lightly”. Ann certainly makes the most of every opportunity. While spending just over a week in the Lyell McEwin Hospital,Ann noticed the hand rail above her bed and thought she could put this to great use. She started doing bicep pull ups in her hospital bed to fight the boredom while in hospital.

Ann said she has been very well looked after and wanted to mention her best friend Vicky, as she “came around every morning to have a coffee and a chat, and has been amazing support to me and pushed me along” says Ann. Andrew, Ann’s husband has also been there right by her side and

made the coffees each morning. Ann also wanted to give a huge thank you to the whole STARplex community. From the STARplex Managers, to all the staff and members of STARplex, Ann said she feels she has had “so much care from the very start”. Ann also wanted to thank STARplex for the beautiful flowers and the special visit from Paul Pearce and Alli Thompson in hospital.

Ann’s next goal is to attend the Masters Games in October, for cycling but says she “definitely wouldn’t jeopardise her health or safety”, but will see how she goes! Well done Ann, you’re an inspiration to many!

Eating Out Everybody enjoys eating out and spend-ing time with family and friends. Unfortu-nately eating out including ‘fine dining’ is not what we would call a ‘healthy meal’. Food is very often associated with so-cialization and it is important that we learn some ‘tricks’ to allow us to not ruin all our good work when eating away from home. Below are 10 tips to help minimize the damage.

Ten ‘Damage Control’ Tips 1. Include fruits and vegetables in your

menu choice. If choosing from a salad bar try to avoid salads with creamy dressings (coleslaw, potato salad, pasta salad).2. Choose lean meats and fish. Ask to have your meat or fish grilled with sauce on the side.3. Skip the sugary soft drinks and al-cohol. Choose water, diet soft drinks or a small glass of fresh juice.4. Choose a smaller serving size. Choose an entrée serving, especially if you are likely to be tempted with a des-sert.5. Check out the restaurant website to see if they have any nutrition infor-mation.6. Listen to your stomach, eat slowly and stop when you are full. Make the most of the social outing and conversa-tion.7. Share a dessert with a friend if you can’t resist.8. Ask for healthy options like no but-ter on your vegetables, steamed or

roast potato instead of chips. Most plac-es are happy to help.9. Plan before you go and choose a restaurant you know that has healthy choices.10. Why not walk to the restaurant or go window shopping afterwards? Remember, if you only eat out once or twice a month then your healthy eating plan will cope if you indulge a lit-tle. Treating yourself and family to oc-casional take away or restaurant meals may even help you avoid cravings and the danger of binge eating. But if you eat out often (regular work lunches) then use the above tips to stay on track with your healthy eating plans.

Social interaction is vital in maintaining a holistic approach to health and if we simply avoided all pub, cafe and restau-rant meals adhere to our perfect diet we would live a pretty boring life.

Staff Profile - Amelia Lange We are fortunate to have Amelia Lange join our Wellness and Rehabilitation Centre. Amelia commenced her em-ployment at STARplex as an Exercise Physiologist in February 2011 to assist Heath Commane in the management of a very sought after service.

Amelia grew up on the family farm in Naracoorte and became actively in-

volved in sport, a passion that grew over the years. In primary school she played netball, hockey and competed in cross country. She also managed to fit in the extra training to competitively swim competing in country champion-ships, Shell Age and SAPSASA..

To finish her schooling it was necessary for Amelia to leave the family home at 13 and move to Adelaide. She attended boarding school at Walford and joined Burnside Hockey Club and Burnside Swimming Club. In between training sessions and finding time for homework, Amelia excelled in her new school envi-ronment and in her final year of school became a House Captain and Swim-ming Captain.

Amelia trained to become a Life Guard and Swimming Instructor and worked at the local swimming centre, lifeguarding and teaching children to swim. She also completed a degree in Human Movement at Uni SA and Certificate III and IV in Fitness.

“When I finished my Uni course, I re-turned to Naracoorte and was attempt-ing to find work in a field which wasn’t recognised yet, this essentially meant that I needed to create my own busi-ness ‘Better Bodz’. This introduced and

offered specialised personal training to the rural community. I also became involved in offering programs which as-sisted clients in their rehabilitation from injuries”, says Amelia.

At the 2011 Channel 9 Young Achiever Awards recently, Amelia was presented with the Rural Doctors Workforce Agen-cy Rural Health Award by Dr Richard Mackinnon in recognition of her contri-bution to Rural Health. “This was for my efforts in setting up cardiovascular and respiratory programs in rural areas, ob-taining the necessary funding and the presentation of my programs to various committee groups. This ultimately pro-vided programs to people back in their own communities that is accessible for rural families, which means that recov-ery is a lot quicker”, says Amelia.

“I love working at STARplex, having come from a business operation where I was the only exercise physiologist, I now enjoy that I’m working with peer support”, says Amelia.

Amelia enjoys playing hockey and keep-ing physically active for triathlons. Cur-rently Amelia is also planning her up-coming wedding to her fiancé, Andrew.

STARS in my Eyes A portion of my work as ‘Writer in Res-idence’ at Trinity College is to com-plete a collection of my own poems. The work is now finished and the man-uscript was professionally edited dur-ing the last holidays and is ready for the printer. It will be launched along with the students’ anthology later in

the year. I’ve given the collection of poems the title AUTUMN IN CANTABILE – The Gawler Poems and will be a collection of poems that focus on all aspects of the town and districts of Gawler. The intent is to capture in the unfolding of the year, South Australia’s oldest country town at a crucial and ‘turning’ moment in its history. Gawler is on the cusp of mas-sive change. The metropolitan sprawl is quickly overtaking the town and district and its once status of a rural village some 50 kilometres from the city is being replaced by a very different and contemporary dynamic. This kind of pro-ject owes much to those nineteenth century writers who chronicled the passing of rural England into the technology and massive changes of the twentieth century. It is both a lament and a celebration of what cannot be held, contained or stopped. It is not to be seen as a testament nor a manifes-to of critical opposition or hostile resistance. Nor will the writ-ing take on the cloak of nostalgia or sentimentality. The pro-ject will be a monument to a moment in time. I’ve included here a single poem from the collection.

This morning the sun

like soft yellow, warm delicious butter

has coveredeverything.

The air is fully laden with golden light

and the cologne spray of star jasmine.

The world is green deepripe and sweet.

I pluck the moment and bite the day to its core.

Run through the Holy City (Story continued from page 1) seeing great results, with huge improve-ments in our overall physical and mental fitness”, Dave said “Paul gave us the motivation we needed to keep going and put in place a training session that ensured our bodies would cope with the challenge we were about to throw at them.”

After completing three months of solid training with Paul, and using the STARplex facilities regularly, the guys

were ready to embark on their journey to the Holy Land and take part in their first ever half marathon

Dave said “We had a few days prior to the event to walk the course and try and take it all in. The first thing that struck us was just how hilly the course was and how tough the run would be.”

Event day came around and despite the steep terrain the boys got across the line in a little over two hours. “It was the most amazing way to see the city of Jerusalem - and of course all the work

we put in with Paul beforehand really paid off.” Dave said.

STARplex Swim Club Compete at National Age Championships

The National Age Championships were held in April at the new Marion SA Aquatic and Leisure Facility. STARplex Swim Club had four National swimmers in James McKechnie, Ma-kayala Ailmore, Joel Pearson and Emma Jensen. James, a year 10 Trinity College student, achieved a STARplex Swim Clubs first in winning Gold when he swam 2.23.87 for the 200m Breaststroke, a personal best time.

James, Joel and Emma Beth all achieved personal best times in many of their swims while Makayla did well to swim at her entry times. Overall STARplex Swim Club finished the 2nd highest point scoring team in South Australia behind Nor-wood Swim Club and finished 46th out of 156 clubs that placed swimmers in finals with many clubs failing to score

any points.

In the lead up to National Age the group were swimming up to nine, two hour pool sessions weekly with start times at 6.00am including Saturdays as well as many evening ses-sions. Having to also fit in homework and for some, fitness centre sessions it is a credit to each of them on achieving such excellent results. The determination that James, Ma-kayla, Joel and Emma have in setting and achieving their individual goals reflects their dedication to swimming.

STARplex Swim Centre Management and Staff congratulate James, Makayla, Joel and Emma on their outstanding achievement and wish them all the best for their future swim-ming.

PE Teaching: a Great Job Being a PE teacher has to be one of the best jobs in education. When we come to work, our focus is on health and phys-ical performance. What else is more relevant today? Our jobs revolve around health, fitness and skills. A good PE teacher will have skills in most sports without the need to excel in any one sport in particular. A good PE teacher should be physically fit. When it comes to fitness, it’s the perfect job. You need to be fit so you can demon-strate skills and mix it with the kids and

it is through this active involvement in PE classes that fitness levels are easier to maintain. ‘Personal’ training and train-ing ‘on the job’ are mutually beneficial. Above all, we have the ability and op-portunity to shape the attitude of young people towards fitness and well being.

I have a simple philosophy. When we look at PE in schools, the objective for the Junior and Middle Schools is to teach skills and attitudes. In the Senior School, it is about skills, attitudes and results.

Getting back to my philosophy; what should we be aiming for in a PE pro-gram that offers such little time per week? Skills and attitudes is the an-swer.

The aim of course, is to see these same kids lining up on weekends to join teams or to simply have them pester mum or dad or big brother to go outside and play with them. If they are doing this at 6 years of age, I guarantee they will still

be doing it at 10 or 12 and beyond.

Unfortunately, modern society keeps putting up barriers. Too many kids are overweight and inactive and in some cases, diet is an issue. In many families it is hard to devote time to their chil-dren’s fitness and play. Longer working days, the lack of grassed and well lit parks and bike tracks, the 21st century home with their small or sometimes non-existent back yards, stranger danger are just some of the barriers that children and their families face today.

Trinity College and its establishment of STARplex is a leader in the field of health and wellness for kids. The num-ber of programs available is incredible. Everyday there are hundreds, every week, thousands of kids learning to swim, to kick, to dribble, to throw goals, to jump, to vault. We are getting it right and so are the increasing numbers of families who are becoming involved. (Story continued on page 6)

“Living life with the enthusiasm of a four year old”How wonderful would it be to wake up each morning with the enthusiasm of a four year old? As we grow up it

can sometimes seem that we are bogged down with dead-lines, responsibilities and world news. I am not saying that these are not important, but it can zap the fun out of our lives and we can mistake our life as resembling something like ground hog day.

Having the responsibility of caring for children certainly keeps life in perspective and is one of the hardest jobs I know. Ex-hausting as it may be it is also the most rewarding experience that life can thrust upon us. We can learn a lot from our children and I am reminded of this each and every day that I come to work. For me children share the gift of enthusiasm, spontanei-ty and a real passion for living life to the full.

It might not be acceptable to turn up to work in your pyjamas, change your name to Buzz Lightyear for the day or throw your-self on the ground and have a tanti, but it is possible to have a great enthusiasm for living life. This is what I take away with me each time I play with the children in the STARplex Crèche and why I love my job.

Zumba! Zumba! This would have to be the most amazing and excit-ing experience of my life. I come from a background of belly dancing and for the past year have been attending Zumba classes at STARplex, both Aqua, Gold and the original Zumba in the STARplex Fitness Centre.

The instructors at STARplex are both talented and inspiring. Having been reg-ularly attending these classes I decided that I too would like to become a Zumba Instructor. I completed my training in January 2011 and am working hard to-

wards starting my own Zumba journey.

Zumba has an energy that is like noth-ing else. It makes me feel alive and has motivated me to make positive changes in my life. I am addicted to Zumba and if you have done a class you will know what I mean, if you have-n’t yet you are missing out on all the fun. Come to Zumba, dance, shake and exercise the stress and kilos away. It’s like having a party while getting fit-ter and working towards your goals.

Starlight Children’s Foundation 2011STARplex raised a total of $8466.50 in 2010 for this wonderful cause - we are aiming for at least $10000 in 2011.

From Starlight Day (6th May) until Sunday 15th May, STARplex turned yellow and purple to raise awareness of Starlight and to raise much needed funds for this amazing charity.

Thanks to the support of our own staff, colleagues at Trini-ty College and our clients, we have managed to raise $3450 in these few short days - an amazing effort. This money will assist with the ongoing costs and services as-sociated with the new Starlight Express Room.

PE Teaching: a Great Job (Story continued from page 5)

PE teachers have to look at the big pic-ture. In the short term, it is unlikely that more time will be given for PE. There-fore, in programs which can have some frustrating restrictions placed upon them, they must understand that what they say and do and how well they plan every lesson may be critical to the health and physical development of

children.

If a young child wants to join Ricky Simpson’s after school basketball ses-sions (not just because Ricky is really cool) but because that child had fun learning how to dribble a ball in Year 2 PE, then that is a huge win for us. If an 18 year old school leaver has the de-sire and confidence to join a community netball, volleyball or badminton team because of the skills gained in their

middle school PE lessons, then that is a great result for everyone. When these things happen year after year in quality PE lessons, our school and community teams will always be full. Good habits formed at a young age will continue through to the teenage years and be-yond as more and more kids find a way to keep active.

David Schell Head of PE—Trinity College

The Starlight Express room at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide is the first Starlight Express Room in SA and is a new design that is now setting a benchmark for other Starlight Express Rooms across Australia. These rooms are where Captain Starlight delivers a special brand of fun and entertainment, alongside the latest computer games, movies, crafts and activities.

The Express rooms are an escape room that provide a medi-cal free respite for children and their families.

The money was raised from cash donations, merchandise purchases, colouring-in competitions, balloon purchases (balloons and helium kindly donated by Spotlight, Munno Pa-ra) and the purchase of Protea flowers for Mothers’ day (kindly donated by Tom Stone, Trinity College).

children cancer free.

“You either become a victim or a survivor”. During the time I was diagnosed with cancer I was half way through Lance Armstrong’s book “It’s not about the bike”. I started the book again from the beginning as it now took on a whole new per-spective. I took so much of his survival motivation on board and I was lucky enough to meet him and have dinner with him two years ago.

I am an advocate of proactive ‘survivorship” for those who suffer from the disease and this was my motivation to walk the Kokoda track with 17 other Gawler residents. Following is an account of our experience.

On 13th April 2011, four STARplex members: Karen Fuller, Alf Justus, Sandra Marshall and Kirsten Whisson jetted to Port Moresby, Papau New Guinea to undertake the strenu-ous “ANZAC DAY Memorial Trek”, as part of their quest to raise $100,000 for the Cancer Council of South Australia. Prior to this trek they had spent six months training and hold-ing numerous fundraising activities.

Papua New Guinea is a young nation, but has endured a colourful and, at times, bloody history. The Kokoda Track was used during the course of World War II by the Japanese as a means of launching a ground attack against the Australi-ans in Port Moresby. On this trek, they set out to explore the (Story continued on page 7)

Kokoda for Cancer Fundraiser In 2002 I was diagnosed with Breast cancer. My two chil-dren were only three years and 10 months old. They were my motivation to fight the cancer as at that age they cer-tainly were not ready to be without their mum. At the time I was a fit, healthy athlete and fitness instructor, so this made me aware that cancer can happen to anyone. After six months of radiotherapy and chemotherapy I decided to help raise awareness of early detection and help raise money to find a cure for this terrible disease and keep our

Seventy four budding young netballers took advantage of hearing, talking and working with their idols. Girls were signed in for the day and received a free netball.

On arrival the Thunderbird players were introduced and then had a group photo with all the participants. The group of girls were then divided into age levels and were directed to a court with a Thunderbird player. Twenty minute sessions were held and then each group rotated until every netballer had a session with each of the Thunderbird girls.

Kokoda for Cancer Fundraiser(Story continued from page 6) complete route of the campaign starting from Owen’s Corner (not far from the point where Australian troops first turned back the Japanese advance) perched high on the Sogeri Plateau and eventually working their way east to the village of Kokoda. By the time they arrived at Kokoda they had completed a crossing of the central spine of Papau New Guinea, paid homage at all the main battle sites and also gained an appreciation of the rugged beauty of the region that includes the impressive Owen Stanley Range. On top of this was the fascinating cultural experience of interacting with the indigenous people. There was the challenge and adventure created by rugged mountain terrain and fast

flowing rivers coupled with having a fantastic time interacting in a group of 18 trekkers and their affiliated local “porters”, working together for a common purpose and the individual satisfaction of mastering the physical difficulties of the track.

“We had many laughs along the way and met some incredi-ble people - fellow trekkers, other Aussie trekkers, but most significantly the local people who have ‘sooo’ little but gave us so much” says Sandra.

“The Kokoda Track experience is well known to change peo-ple’s lives forever. To have had this opportunity and for such a good cause, all the brainchild of local man and Cancer Council Ambassador - Brent Matthews, was almost too good to be true”, says Sandra.

I would like to thank you so very much for a wonderful night last night. The way you organised the whole night is a great credit to you.

I would also like to thank the staff. The reception staff, consultants, gym staff, trainers who took the class.

They all put in 100% which made for a very enthusiastic build up to the Launch. This enthusiasm spilt over into last night, making for one of the best launches I have ever been to.

Sh’Bam was fantastic can’t wait to do it again.
