So what’s wrong! I am lucky enough to have not one but three chronic medical conditions:

1. Hello Readers

STARs in my eyes‘It’s all right to be sad.’ Thomas Moore Care of the Soul.

The worst of lies which our modern materialistic, industrialised and technologically sophisticated world tells us is that we ought to be happy all of the time. In fact, expect to be! Every television commercial I see reiterates this same terrible falsehood. Yet in fact sadness is the balance that we need to

expect – not consistently pleasing, healthy, untroubled lives.

‘We are who we are and do not need to be someone we are not. When we realise this we take the first steps in being truly content.’ Paul Pearce - STARplex Fitness Centre Manager

Having just completed the Advanced First Aid Certificate in Mental Health, a requirement now for tertiary teaching, I was staggered by the statistics on depression in Australia:

•The rate of increase in depression among children is an astounding 23% p.a.

•15% of the population of most developed countries suffers severe depression.

•30% of women are depressed. Men’s figures were previously thought to be half that of women, but new estimates are higher.

‘Suffering is the price of being alive, and it is music and singing and art that has helped me live through some of the most difficult things that have happened to me.’ Judy Collins

Everyone will at some time in their life be affected by depression - their own or someone else’s, according to Australian Government statistics.

‘To hurt is as human as to breathe.’ J. K. RowlingSometimes it can be difficult to know whether you or someone you know is feeling down or stressed or whether it’s depression, anxiety or a related disorder. Depression and anxiety can affect anyone, anywhere, at any time. Beyond Blue suggests the common symptoms of depression include:

•Feeling sad, down or miserable most of the time •Losing interest or pleasure in most of your usual activities •Losing or gaining a lot of weight •A decrease or increase in appetite •Sleep disturbances •Feeling slowed down, restless or excessively busy •Feeling tired or having no energy •Feeling worthless, or feeling excessively guilty about things you should not feel guilty about •Poor concentration, or difficulties in thinking; or being very indecisive •Having recurrent thoughts of deathAnd while it’s all right to be sad, depression and anxiety are serious conditions that need to be treated. What can you do? Beyond Blue is a wonderful resource with check lists and help. Talk to a friend who will listen. See your doctor. Exercise is a wonderful proven therapy for the psyche, as well as for physical health and fitness. Are you eating real, whole food? Drinking water? Moderating alcohol intake? Reducing processed ‘food’. Try also writing about problems you’re facing, your feelings and thoughts, and possible solutions. How is your spiritual well being? You are not alone. And, as the ancient Persian proverb promises, ‘This too shall pass.’‘We’ve got to live, no matter how many skies have fallen’. D. H. Lawrence

Jeff Guess / Writer in Residence / Trinity College

At the spritely age of 54 I have found myself back playing basketball on a Tuesday evening at STARplex. The mind still knows exactly what is required of my body to play the game but sometimes the body has a disconnect and is too slow in actioning the mind’s messages. This of course results in some embarrassing mistakes which in my younger days would make me cringe but lately such mistakes move me to laughter.

I am fortunate to be playing with a team of chaps who are gracious enough to overlook these embarrassing moments or are happy to laugh along with me. Whichever the case, the shared experiences of a team both on and off the court are important to me as the players offer a sense of acceptance and belonging in addition to the satisfaction of playing.

June 11 to 17, 2012 was Men’s Health Week, it is more apparent today than ever that men’s health is very much tied to their sense of acceptance as well as their physical activity level. I would encourage men to consider participating in team sports for these reasons. Team sport not only gets the body active, the perspiration flowing , the heart thumping and the breathing heavy, it provides interaction through shared experience and common goals. A commitment to a team ensures you exercise regularly making you accountable to others and thereby improving your fitness, boosting your resistance to sickness and creating a sense of wellbeing.

Of course you need to be able to adjust the game you play as you get older in order to reduce the embarrassing moments that are sure to arise, but for your mental, emotional and physical health it ticks the right boxes. Check out the opportunities available to be active and join a team by looking up the STARplex website www.starplex.com.au for the social basketball, mixed netball and volleyball options.

There is always a way - Never ever give up!(story continued from page 1)

covered in a huge bruise with weights laid all over me and I never ever get a restful night’s sleep.

3. Colitis which is also an autoimmune illness, in which the body’s immune system attacks the colon and causes inflammation of the colon and is classed as an inflammatory bowel disease.

I was once a world ranked BMX racer and cyclist and have also battled and beaten depression over the last 10 years as my body moves further and further away from the athlete I once knew. My exercise capabilities are severely restricted due to my disease and chronic fatigue, but two years ago I turned the corner when I found Les Mills RPM at STARplex.

The non joint impact and high cardio output has allowed me to exercise hard. No I can’t do weight training, box or run or even ride out on the road but I can ride RPM!

Thanks to the awesome support of my RPM instructors Paul Pearce, Alli Thompson, Shane Costello and Megan Duffy, I feel closer to the athletic person I once was.

Even now as I am recovering from having a surgical wrist replacement my instructors are still supporting and encouraging me and I can’t wait to get back on the bike and rip it up and test my new hardware.Living with these diseases has certainly taught me what is really important in life and I am thankful for the support of my family, friends, my team of specialists, my GP, Physio, Alli and the staff at STARplex and the great people I work with. If I could give up all my health problems, I don’t think I would. I am the person I am today because of them, it has been a long road and I know it will be longer yet but I am happy with me.

Celebrations for STARplex Members at Barossa Fun Run

What an amazing turnout by members from STARplex at the Barossa Fun Run on the 27th of May, not only the participants but also the wonderful support crew which was lead by Louise Skelton and STARplex Personal Trainer Co-ordinator Samantha Craig. It was what you would call a beautiful Barossa morning; cool with a little bit of sun to keep the enthusiasm going. Perfect conditions for running and the Barossa hosting their first marathon with all STARplex runners achieving great results in their chosen events.Congratulations to Karin Haines who participated in the full marathon finishing in a time of 4 hours and 34 minutes. “I never imagined that I could run a marathon. I set myself a goal and after 20 weeks of training and with encouragement from gym staff and fellow STARplex members, I achieved it. The best thing after running 42.2 km was everyone at the finish line cheering me on”, says Karin.

Beth MacGilliviray and myself ran in the half marathon both achieving personal bests. Beth finished her first half marathon in 2 hours 7minutes and 31 seconds, which is an outstanding time. For me, receiving a personal best of 2 hours 19 minutes and 44 seconds was just the icing on the cake, for the real journey was what I overcame in the 20

weeks of gruelling and intense training leading up to the event. Congratulations to Stephane Lange, Pat Remnant, Lucy Baxter and Steve Brown who ran in the 10km event. “As usual it takes me 5km to get into the groove of things, so from then on it was comfortable and I was able to move through the packs as I was getting closer to the finish. By the 1km mark I put the pedal to the metal mainly so I would get a good photo at the finishing line. I managed to shave 3 minutes 14 seconds off my previous 10km run, doing this run in 56 minutes and 48 seconds”, says Stephanie.Finishing the day off with a nice lunch in Tanunda with fellow runners, their families and our STARplex Cheersquad was the perfect ending to the day.Dawn Mettyear and Stephanie Lange

Motivated Mum(story continued from page 1)

shop and buy something that fits, I want to play at the best sporting level that I can before I retire, this is my last chance!

It was January 1st 2012, that I made a commitment to lose weight. I set the goal of 98kg by 25th June, my 31st birthday. I was still breast feeding so decided to change a few things in my diet and not go on one of those crazy rapid weight loss diets, I’ve tried so many times before, but end up putting the weight plus some back on. Like those advertisements you see on T.V. swap. I would swap hot chips for salad, chocolate for fruit, soft drinks for water and I was very strict with walks in the evenings to increase my exercise. We went down to the sports store and put a treadmill on layby. All these little positive changes where leading to good results. Once the treadmill was paid for I started running for half an hour daily. I would feel bad about myself if I missed a run. I was eating a healthy breakfast, lunch and tea with snacks if I was hungry. I don’t believe I ever starved myself, I just chose the best thing to eat.

I started to feel fitter and stronger. I began to play better at netball moving up through the grades as my fitness level moved up. I made and represented South Australia in rugby league. I needed new challenges to keep me motivated. Through my netball, I met some of the staff from STARplex. I attended a body pump class and after that one class I was hooked. I signed up and became a full member. I visit most days, taking part in many different classes RPM, CXWORX, Body Pump and many more. I really enjoy my time at the gym, it’s my time to do something for myself and I feel great after every session.

The main things that have helped me be successful are my positive thoughts and actions, small steps in the right direction. The support of my family. Setting goals and keeping track of my progress is a real motivation tool and having STARplex to constantly challenge me. I’m not on a diet, I have simply changed my lifestyle. I will never go back to my former lifestyle now that I am enjoying and feeling so good about myself.

I reached my goal of 98kgs and have set myself new goals. I’m currently 84kgs and have lost a total of 43kgs.

Central Districts Lions

The Central Districts Lions are one of 10 District Clubs competing in the peak basketball competition in South Australia. The Lions have proudly called STARplex home for the past 11 years, since the amazing venue opened.

The top clubs in the state compete annually in the State Championships and one of the outcomes of state championships success is to be invited to compete at the U14 National Club Championships.

At this year’s state championships, for the first time in the history of the Lions, we had not only one but both of our U14 boys and girls teams qualify for the U14 National Club Championships. Only one other district club in the whole of South Australia managed to do this this year, the Southern Tigers (based at Morphett Vale).

This will give kids in our area the opportunity to compete against the best teams in the nation and experience high level tournament play. The championships are not only fun and exciting but have been the proving ground for many athletes that have gone onto represent Australia at the

Olympic games and play professionally in Australia and abroad.

The boys’ team will compete in the championships in Perth later in the year. The team consists mostly of players from around the Gawler area many of whom started in the STARplex competition and currently attend the STARplex run Northern Region Sports Academy (NRSA). The team is coached by Toby Lockwood and the players are: Biar Gerang; Boyd Woodcock; Brad Skuce; Brodie Nathan; Deklan Crook; Jackson Hately; Kyle Clark; Lachlan Arnold; Malachai Ahmatt-Lovett

The girls’ team, who will play in the championships in Morphett Vale later in the year, includes girls mostly from outside the Gawler area from areas such as Broken Hill, Yorke Peninsula, Port Pirie and the Barossa Valley – demonstrating that it not only takes highly dedicated players to succeed but also parents to provide their kids with these opportunities. This team is coached by Nikki Ireland and includes the following players: Abigail Mader; Chelsea Masclet; Claudia Hatcher; Ella Gunning; Georgia Thomson; Jasmine Simmons; Kirralee Thomas; Madeline Zielonka; Molly Colman

We are keen to see more budding basketballers from STARplex and Gawler have the opportunity to train and play with the Lions.

If you are keen to find out more about taking the next step in your basketball contact Andrew Jantke (Director of Coaching) at [email protected]

in the USA, where everything is so different,” Templeton said.

“They had a good college program and great training facilities, and it was a great life experience.“I’ve been using a lot of what I learned there to help Ricky (Simpson) train the current group at NRSA.”

The first female to attend a USA college was Rosalie Cutri, who spent two years at Casper College and is going back to attend Boise State University.

In the overseas environment, Rosalie has excelled and is determined to get the best out of herself.

“After the first year I was still nervous when I went back, and I was still fighting for my spot, but at least I knew what they wanted,” Cutri said.“When I’m over there I miss the old lifestyle, family and friends, and the food, not everything here is processed and fried!”Jordan Centenera has just returned from a year playing for an under 19 team in Germany, which was associated with a professional league and had ‘amazing’ facilities. He is undecided if he will attend college in the USA this year, while his advice to others is to take advantage of opportunities.A three-year ‘veteran’ of playing in the USA, Andrew Bolton is set to again return soon.

“I hardly played the first two years but last year I was in a good spot, playing at Sonoma Uni in California,” Bolton said.

“The coach is great and it is a brilliant professional program. I do miss my friends but get by with Skype, and of course the food is always great when I come home.”

“Playing in the States, my game has improved 100 per cent, and the best advice I can give anyone considering going overseas to play, persevere – do not give up.”Due to leave soon for his first overseas adventure, David Humphries is heading for North Iowa in August, and is looking forward to the experience of a lifetime.

Local ‘Globetrotters’In years past an American group of basketballers called the Harlem Globetrotters would travel the world to play exhibition games.Nowadays, Gawler may be able to use the moniker ‘Globetrotters’, with many Northern Regional Sports Academy basketball graduates improving their game through overseas experiences.Last week five of the academy’s ‘products’ were training together at home, and shared some of their experiences. One of the first graduates was Jacob Templeton, who has switched sports and currently plays league football with Central District.“Originally I went to North Iowa Area Community College

How to keep full without blowing

the Calorie BudgetWith the cold weather well and truly upon us, warm and hearty meals are appealing to keep us full but often don’t help us stay within our energy (kilojoule/calorie) budget. Controlling our appetite and preventing over eating is one of the most difficult nutritional issues but carefully prepared

meals can help make it easier. Below are my three major tips.1. Include a lean ProteIn Source

Diets higher in protein (Not Low Carb Diets) have been proven to help control appetite and reduce over eating. Foods rich in protein take longer for the body to process and therefore keep us feeling full for longer. If we choose lean (low fat) protein sources, often the overall energy (calorie) content of the food will be relatively low. Lean meats such as tuna, chicken breast, turkey and kangaroo provide high sources of protein with low fat and basically no carbohydrate. Other good sources of protein include eggs, nuts and seeds, legumes and lentils and yoghurt however these products contain either fat or carbohydrate in addition. TIP: Include 20-30g of protein in your meal to help keep you satisfied.

2. chooSe low GI and hIGh FIbre carbohydrateS

Carbohydrates are required by the body for energy supply

however often if they are over consumed they can lead to over eating. Many carbohydrates on the market are highly processed and have low fibre content which often leads to them being rapidly digested with a high GI (rapid rise in blood sugars). The issue with high GI carbohydrates is that they will provide you with short term energy however will leave you searching for something else in a short period of time. High GI carbohydrates include white bread/wraps, plain cracker biscuits/rice cakes and instant noodles. Focus on including high fibre carbohydrates such as heavy grain breads, wraps & cracker biscuits, legumes & lentils (baked beans), basmati or brown rice, fruit and yoghurt. These foods will provide the body with sustainable energy, fibre for proper bowel function as well as maintain steady hunger and blood sugar levels. People tend to eat less (smaller portion size) of low GI carbohydrates as they satisfy our hunger quicker. tIP: chooSe 1 low GI carbohydrate to Include at each meal

3. alwayS add FIller

Unfortunately there are not many low energy foods on the market that don’t contain artificial sweeteners or flavouring. It takes time for the stomach to report to the brain that we are full therefore slowing down our eating time is important. Including natural low calorie foods such as vegetables and salads will help increase our eating time as well as provide us with a banquet of vitamins and minerals. Most vegetables are very low in energy apart from potato, sweet potato and corn therefore can be added to each meal to help satisfy our appetite.

tIP: make uP a thIck low enerGy veGetable SouP that can be conSumed beFore StartInG your meal.

spending time with the children and doing the various craft activities with them”, says Shaedell.

Shaedell also loves being active and spending time with friends and family. She is fond of cooking on occasion and enjoys attending the fitness centre to do CXWORKS and Balance. She is also running on the treadmill and doing a weight program twice a week in preparation for a Tough Mudder competition next year. Shaedell also fits in RPM during the week, but admits that this is a bit of a challenge at the moment, but she is persevering with it to prepare herself for the upcoming competition.

Tough Mudder is an army assault course designed by the special forces which covers approximately a 18km area and incorporates 18 to 20 stations of various army strength obstacle courses that you need to run to and complete before you can progress. The average time to complete the course is approximately three to four hours and it is apparently more intense than completing a marathon.

All of us here at STARplex wish her every success with her training and the completion of the assault course next year.
