Dear Teachers,

Get ready for GAMEday Education 2011 with the Peoria Chiefs!

Included in this education packet are exercises you can do with

your class to help them get excited about coming out to see aballgame.

In the spirit of trying to make learning fun, you will see that each

exercise not only concerns baseball but implements elements of

common school subjects as well.

Each exercise is included to help students learn more about

baseball while increasing their intellect and making learning fun.

Exercises are grouped by subject. The main subjects covered are

Geography/Social Studies, Math, English and Brain Busters. There

are multiple exercises for each subject so feel free to choose the

best exercise or two for your particular class. Also, for 2011

we’ve again included our Student Media Program which allows

two of your students to “work” as credentialed media pre-game

and experience Minor League Baseball from a reporter’s

viewpoint. Please be sure to check out all the details at the end

of this packet.

Our hope is that your class not only enjoys completing the

exercises, but that they will also learn some new fun facts about

Chiefs Baseball and their school work. Any questions you may

have about this packet or the GAMEday Education Days can be

answered on our web site at www.peoriachiefs.com, where you

will find a GAMEday Education link under the “Community” tab.

This is also the place to find additional information about the 2011

WMBD 31 is proud to be part of the 2011 Peoria Chiefs

GAMEday Education program. WMBD 31 Chief Meteorologist

Marcus Bailey and our team of meteorologists will bring the

weather education classroom to the ballpark.

Kids will learn about how meteorologists observe the

atmosphere and forecast the weather. What’s the difference

between a “watch” and a “warning;” you’ll find out. Studentswill also learn how weather impacts the game of baseball.

We’ll have video presentations and hands-on experiments

down on the field.

WMBD’s mascot, “Snow Bear,” and Peoria Chiefs mascot

“Homer” will assist to make the weather presentation a fun-

filled event.

So, come on out to the ballpark, learn about the weather, cheer on the Chiefs, and have a great day.

Best Regards,

Marcus Bailey

Batting Average & $$$

Swinging for the Fences

Statistics are very important to batters. People want to know about home runs, RBI’s, runsscored, and walks.

One of the most important statistics to a batter is his batting average. Ted Williams of the1941 Boston Red Sox was the last MLB player to hit over .400 in a single season, with abatting average of.406.

The formula for determining a batter’s batting average is:

AVG = (# of Hits / # of At Bats)*Walks are not considered “At Bats” and therefore do not affect a batter’s batting average

A batting average is represented by a decimal carried out to three places, such as .300.

Figure out the AVG for these Peoria Chiefs batters for the 2010 season.

Directions: Read the following Chiefs press release and answer thequestions that follow. The answers can be found in the reading.Write your answers on a separate piece of paper.

PEORIA, IL - With the Major League Baseball playoffs starting Wednesday afternoon, Peoria Chiefsfans may find it hard to choose who to root for with all the local teams left out this October. But five of

the eight teams who are battling for the 2010 World Series trophy have a player, coach or broadcasterwith direct connections to the Chiefs. This is the 19th year in a row that at least one former Chiefsplayer has appeared in the MLB post-season.

The defending champion New York Yankees have the most connections with three former Chiefs.Manager Joe Girardi played for the Chiefs in 1986, hitting .309 with three homers and 28 RBI in 68games and again on a three-game rehab assignment in 2003. Girardi led the Yankees to the WorldSeries title last season and won three as a player with the Yankees from 1996-99. Bullpen Coach MikeHarkey, a former 1st round pick of the Cubs, made his professional debut in Peoria in 1987, going 2-3with a 3.55 ERA in 12 starts. After making his Cubs debut in 1988, Harkey rehabbed in two starts withthe Chiefs in 1992. Reliever Kerry Wood has posted a sparkling 0.69 ERA in 24 games as a set-upman for the Yankees this season with 31 strikeouts in 26 innings. He rehabbed with the Chiefs sixdifferent times between 2005 and 2007 going 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 10 1/3 innings of work. Wood haspitched in the post-season four times, all with the Cubs in 1998, 2003, 2007 and 2008. He has a post-season record of 2-2 in eight outings with no saves and a 3.68 ERA.

The defending NL champion Philadelphia Phillies have two Chiefs connections with infielder PlacidoPolanco and Bench Coach Pete Mackanin. Polanco is in his second stint in Philadelphia and batted .298 with six homers, 27 doubles, 52 RBI and 76 runs scored in 132 games this season. He hit .266 withtwo homers, 43 runs scored and 41 RBI in 103 games as a 19-year-old shortstop with the Chiefs in1995. Polanco has played in the post-season three times, twice with St. Louis in 2000 and 2001, andwith Detroit in 2006. The 2006 ALCS MVP, Polanco has a career average of .296 in the playoffs witheight RBI and seven runs scored in 25 games. Mackanin won 152 games with the Chiefs in two seasonsas he managed the likes of Greg Maddux, Mark Grace, Girardi, Rafael Palmeiro and Dwight Smith in1985-86. Both of Mackanin’s Peoria teams lost in the Midwest League Finals.

The Tampa Bay Rays won the AL East for the second time under Manager Joe Maddon who wasthe second-ever skipper in Chiefs history in 1984. As a then California Angels affiliate, the 1984 Chiefssquad went 66-73. Maddon went on to serve as the Angels bench coach before joining the Rays in2006. In five seasons with Tampa Bay, Maddon is 404-406 with two division titles. He led the Rays tothe 2008 World Series and has a post-season record of 8-8.

The Atlanta Braves are represented by former Chiefs pitcher Rick Ankiel. Now an outfielder, Ankiel

hit .210 with two homers and nine RBI in 47 games for the Braves this season after a late-season tradefrom Kansas City. Ankiel was lights-out for the Chiefs as an 18-year-old in 1998 posting a 3-0 record inseven starts with a 2.06 ERA. He struck out 41 and walked just 12 over 35 innings He also rehabbedwith the Chiefs in 2002 but never saw game action. Dear Teachers,

Welcome to the Peoria Chiefs Student Media program! The Student Media

program is a wonderful way for you to award a special privilege totwo

of thestudents already participating in your school’s outing with the Peoria Chiefs.

Our new program takes the time to promote print journalism, radio

broadcasting and television reporting and encourages students to learn more

about the sports media profession. Those invited to join the program will

receive a press pass that allows them access to a pre-game interview with

Chiefs players and a media kit with current Chiefs information.

Our partnerships with WMBD TV-31 and the Peoria Journal Star help expand

the Student Media program to include the Chiefs PJ Star beat writer, Kevin

Capie and the WMBD sports team of Kurt Pegler and Kyle Dierking. Thosethree professionals along with the Voice of the Chiefs Nathan Baliva will

provide your students with a once in a lifetime media experience at the

ballpark.

Enclosed in this packet are examples of some of the materials the students

will receive when they arrive at the ballpark on gameday. When selecting

students to attend, please encourage them to prepare 3-5 questions for the

press conference. Schools may select two students to participate in the

Student Media Program.

Students who take part in the Student Media program may also write a story

after the conclusion of the game that is similar in style to what you may see

in the sports section of the newspaper or online. If the stories are returned to

us during the next week, we will post them on our website at

www.peoriachiefs.com for all our fans to read!

We will also gladly post photos that your class takes and emails to us in a

GAMEDay Education Photo Gallery so parents can see how much fun your

classroom had with the Peoria Chiefs!

Thanks for your participation in the Student Media program with the Chiefsand I look forward to hosting you and your student reporters at O’Brien Field.

Sincerely,

Nathan Baliva

Peoria Chiefs Press Conference

Questions/Ideas

A press conference is a special event where an organization or person

representing that organization makes statements about upcoming events

and/or answers questions from various members of the media.

As part of the Student Media program you will be able to participate in a

special pregame press conference with Peoria Chiefs players. The Chiefs are

a member of the Class A Midwest League which consists of 16 teams and the

Chiefs play 140 games each season. The Chiefs are affiliated with the

Chicago Cubs of Major League Baseball so all players are professional

athletes who are paid by the Cubs and assigned to Peoria by the Cubs. They

are from all over the United States and even from other countries such as

the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, South Korea, Italy and Australia. This is

your chance to ask these professional athletes anything you want! Use this

opportunity to learn more about the life of a professional athlete. There is no

wrong question and you can be as creative as you wish!

While we encourage each Student Reporter to come up with his/her own

questions, here are some examples of questions you could ask the Chiefs

players:

1. How does it feel to be a professional baseball player?

2. How long have you been playing professional baseball?

3. When you were in grade school what did you want to be when you got

older?

4. What is your greatest moment or memory so far in baseball?

5. What is the best advice you can give to someone my age who wants to

play a professional sport?

6. Who was your favorite player/team growing up?7. What is it like to live away from home and be in Peoria?

Don’t forget to take notes! You can use the answers in your game story if

you so choose. You can write a story on the game you watch after the press

conference or you can do a feature story on the players you interview or

anything else that happens to you and your classmates while at O’Brien Field
