Messages...As President of the United Way of Franklin County Board of Directors, I am so pleased to share some of the accomplishments the organization, its volunteers and its agencies achieved in 2011:

• We started our spring activities with the 15th Annual Day of Caring. Over 60 volunteers com-pleted 18 projects for local non-profits and their clients, including painting; playground maintenance; repairing doors, drywall, brick wall and other repairs; and cleaning. One highlight was as one volun-teer team entertained elderly residents with music, another team cleaned their apartments.

• The 5th Annual Pro-Active for Life 5K Run/Walk benefiting the United Way continued to grow in numbers, including first time runners and team participation. With pre-race programs and health-related seminars offered as part of this event, it is quickly becoming a premier race in the Central Kentucky area. In fact, this year it became part of The Frankfort Trifecta Run/Walk Series. Other races included in this three-run series are the Run for the Gold 3K and the Activate America 5 Miler.

• One of our key activities was a brand new event called Touch-A-Truck. With vast community involvement, Touch-A-Truck became an instant favorite for families and individuals to enjoy. Through the hard work of Mike Penn of Holbrook Towing and Sheriff Pat Melton, PUSH Early Childhood Education Center and the United Way of Franklin County benefited greatly. Some examples of vehicles, which were displayed at Touch-A-Truck, are: farm machinery, mili-

tary vehicles, race/vintage cars, buses, large trucks. There was even a “human truck pull” where teams of individuals challenged each other to see how fast they could pull a gigantic Fast Trax truck. It was so fun and successful that we hope to make this an annual event.

• Fall activities started with the 1st Annual Kentucky Capitol Senior Games. This was also a very suc-cessful new event, which benefited the United Way of Franklin County significantly. These senior games were created in an effort to promote the health and wellness of our seniors (aged 50 and over). Events included horseshoes, swimming, cross country, golf, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, track & field, shuffleboard, 5K road race, badminton, archery, bowling, racquetball, cycling, and basketball.

• The Comedy Caravan put on a very funny show for us in Novem-ber. The show included comedic performances by the very tal-ented Bob Batch, Keith McGill and Donna Watts. Through the gen-erous efforts of Tom Sobel of Comedy Caravan and Brian Booth of Capital Plaza Hotel, this comedy show was a hit. Approximately 150 comedy show tickets were sold and all proceeds of this event were donated to the United Way of Franklin County.! ! ! !

• The Community Investment Committee was in full gear from September to November reviewing agency programs and making recommendations to the Board. This team of volunteers did a truly outstanding job and put in many hours to ensure we continue to be good stewards of our community’s generous donations.

q! !

• This year, Cardinal Office Products established a partnership with the United Way of Franklin County through their new “Partners in Giving” program. 5% of all Cardinal Office Products purchases are now donated to our organization, which benefits 19 dif-ferent agencies serving our community. This is a great way for businesses and indi-viduals to give back to Franklin County at no extra cost to them!

• Our 19 partner agencies continued to serve our community, with the lives of over 15,000 Franklin County residents positively impacted through a wide variety of health and human service programs. There was a continued increase in fundraising events and inter-agency support.

• The Board and staff worked to reduce administrative costs through bidding print jobs, changing bene-fit packages, and moving to a different office location.

Franklin County is a wonderful place to live and work. Our Board members, volunteers, staff and agen-cies are dedicated to making a difference. We thank our community donors for your generosity in allow-ing positive change to continue.

Thank you for allowing me to serve.

Messages...Our United Way continues to positively impact thousands of people in Franklin County. The needs in

our community have continued to increase and are currently at a level unseen in recent history. The 2011 campaign was tough from every aspect. However, we held our ground due to the generosity of faithful longtime givers and hundreds of new givers.

Unemployment and reduced work hours continue to be a significant problem in Franklin County. The basic need for food and shelter is still at the forefront. Unfortunately, we still have families making tough decisions between keeping the heat on, buying medicine, or purchasing food.

No one should be forced to choose between paying for food and heat or paying for medicine because of the high cost of prescriptions. That’s why I’m proud to announce that United Way of Franklin County partnered with in 2011 to distribute free prescription discount cards available to everyone in Franklin County. People living and working in Franklin County saved $50,630.71 in prescription costs in 2011! We look forward to helping extend this resource to Franklin County on an ongoing basis.

Even though this is an exciting step in the right direction, we still should remember that needs are in-creasing everyday. Therefore, we must continue to increase our efforts for our neighbors through a de-termination to close the gap between lack of necessities and available resources. Frankfort is one of the best communities in the country and we need to bind together, pool our resources, and literally close the gap! I’m confident, with your help and leadership, we can make this happen.

The new year is here and we need your help to continue changing lives in a significant way! Please speak with others to let them know how United Way and its partner agencies are positively impacting the lives of those in need. Let’s lead the way and be “the” benchmark for other counties facing many of the same tough issues.

Thank you to all for the support of your time, talents, and treasures!

I also want to make special mention of C. Michael Davenport for the exceptional help and support he provided during the time of our office move in 2011. We appreciate you!

-Randy Roberts, Executive Director

2011 Special Recognition

Our Board of Directors ensures financial viability by reviewing the annual budget, agency funding, end of month and end of year financials. They determine the goals of the United Way and its staff and ensure completion. Each member serves as a liaison to a partner agency and serves on one of the Board commit-tees. Board members are essential to the overall success of the United Way of Franklin County.

The Community Investment Committee is a group of volunteers who review our partner agencies to en-sure compliance with United Way standards, scrutinize their budget, ensure the most pressing commu-nity needs are being met, offer suggestions for improvements within each agency and recommend fund-ing for the following year. These volunteers are invaluable to the ongoing success of our agencies.

The Campaign Team plans and implements a campaign strategy designed to achieve maximum results. Each member is assigned to a division, then calls on businesses in their division. This is accomplished either through an employee or letter campaign, to solicit support. They monitor progress, report results, and participate in goal-setting for their division. These volunteers are essential to the outcome of our an-nual campaign.

Campaign Coordinators are employees who volunteer to lead the employee campaign in their own workplace. These volunteers can mean the difference between a good campaign and a GREAT one. They work with their CEO to schedule presentations, organize contests, raffles and various sales (baked goods, etc.) and serve as the liaison between their company and the United Way. These volunteers are essential to the results of our employee campaigns.

Local Media, including the Frankfort Plant Board/Cable 10, The State Journal, Capital Living Magazine, Forever Communications and McAllen Solutions allow us to share information and ask for support from our community via print, radio and website media. These entities are essential for communication with community members.
