You are a manager in a large global manufacturing and services organization. You are trying to explain to your grandfather how different your job is from his before he retired 10 years ago. You both know how society has changed, and you want to explain how that has changed management. Management has changed with respect to Globalization, and Corporate Responsibility and Ethics. Globalization has effected management in a big way multinational companies that kept a tight control over its departments by keeping them together at the head office are now locating the head of divisions as close to the market as possible. An even old timer like General Electric is locating its finance headquarters at London. Similarly, it is employing foreign origin persons in the echelons of top management. Diversity is being considered essential for global growth. Consider Corporate Responsibility and Ethics. These have changed tremendously during the last ten years. The top management is fully responsible for the financial statements and financial frauds can put top managers behind bars. The requirements of the Sarbanes Oxley Act are very stringent. Even the auditors have to be very careful any violation of ethics can lead to the liquidation of the firm. A good example is that of Arthur Andersen. They faced obstruction of justice charges in Enron case and most of its clients left it because they wanted an auditor that was ethical.
