5

To the graduates of 2010:

Global citizenship has never been more important. I am optimistic because I believe that you – our next generation of community leaders, business people and economists, artists and actors, scientists, politicians, teachers – understand better than anyone that we need to respect and care for our planet, that we have a responsibility to champion human rights, and that compassion is worth cultivating.

We strive to live these ideals at The University of Winnipeg. Our priority has been to offer you the very best education and to nurture in you the special sense of pride and belong¬ing that makes The University of Winnipeg experience so unique. It is my hope that as a graduate you will always carry this pride with you, as I do.

There are many things that make us unique. The University places an emphasis on Community Learning and a commitment to Winnipeg’s downtown. We offer many programs, activities and opportunities that engage our community and, in turn, allow us to learn from our neighbors. Beyond our work locally, the University is becoming a global leader. Recently we announced plans to offer a new Masters in Development Practice program with a focus in Indigenous Development that partners UWinnipeg with some of the best universities in the world. More and more The University is becoming a local university that provides a world-class experience.

According to our students, in both the Globe & Mail and Maclean’s Magazine, UWinnipeg consistently ranks in the Top-10 as one of Canada’s leading post-secondary institutions. And we aim to have all of our graduating students leave us, year after year, with the same high level of satisfaction.

The past year has been historic in the life of UWinnipeg as we continue to see our renaissance take shape, with the grand opening of McFeetors Hall: Great West-Life Student Residence, the new University of Winnipeg Students’ Association Day Care Centre and, most recently, the Bonnie and John Buhler Centre – which is now home to our Faculty of Business, our Division of Continuing Education’s professional programs and the Plug-In Institute for Contemporary Art. These are more than just magnificent new buildings for the downtown – they allow us to provide enhanced services to students so that parents may attend classes, that rural and out-of-country students may have a safe and affordable home, and that people from our surrounding neighbourhood may enjoy new resources in this community.

The University’s ambitious Campus Development Plan allows us to better meet the needs of both students and the community now and into the future. The expansion of Duckworth Centre, the enhancement of the Spence Street Promenade and the refurbishment of Wesley Hall are complete. The Canwest Centre for Theatre and Film is a new and vital part of our campus. Construction of the Science Complex and Richardson College for the Environment and for the AnX (the former Greyhound Bus Depot) is well underway. These expansions and improvements, along with our commitment to community learning and service, increase our ability to deliver high-quality programs and to participate fully as an institution with global commitments.

Obtaining your degree from UWinnipeg has allowed you to experience people and ideas from diverse cultures. You’ve honed your ability to think critically and to become socially aware.

It is my sincere hope that some of you will continue your academic careers with us. We are now one of the few places in Canada offering a Masters degree in Aboriginal Governance and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Rights and Global Studies. The University has embarked on a major drive to extend its academic excellence by promoting graduate programs in Applied Computer Science and Society, in Bioscience, Technology and Public Policy, in English with a Focus on Cultural Studies, and Peace and Conflict Studies.

I encourage you to stay in touch with us. As new alumni, you are now members of a family of nearly 40,000 people who have passed through our doors as students and graduates.

On behalf of our faculty and staff, please accept my best wishes for your adventures ahead.

Sincerely yours,

Lloyd Axworthy, President and Vice-Chancellor

To the Class of 2010:

Hello to our newest Graduates. I am so happy to share this time with you in my various roles. As the President of the UWAC, I applaud your hard work and the crowning glory of your years of study, your graduation day. This is a day you will always remember, when you stood here with your class mates and received your diplomas. What a glorious day indeed. As a fellow UW graduate, you now join a spectacular group of those who have gone before you and leave this wonderful University. You will enjoy great memories of your friends, the socials, the professors, the socials, the panic and success over deadlines, did I mention the socials? You will look back at these days with the warmest of thoughts and these will be your “good old days”. As a fellow human, I think of your shiny happy faces and feel confident that you will be the leaders of our future. With the training and education you now have, you will go out into the world and take your place in society. You may continue your studies or you may start the working day life soon. Regardless, you possess a solid and much accredited education from this school. I congratulate you and your families and friends for your dedication and your success today.

THE UnIVERSITy OF WInnIPEG THE nInETy THIRD COnVOCATIOn

HonoreesVic Toews, BA, LLB, PC, QCHonorary Doctor of LawsVic Toews first came to Manitoba as a child in 1956 with his family. He is a Canadian citizen born in Paraguay where his father had been teaching in a Mennonite colony in the Chaco.

His parents were immigrant Canadians who were both born in Ukraine and who also came to Canada as children. Like many immigrants who have come to this country, his parents instilled in their children a deep sense of gratitude and appreciation to a country that took them in and provided them with unlimited opportunities to succeed.

Like his five siblings, he also learned from his parents the value of a post-secondary education. All six graduated from universities in Manitoba from a variety of faculties.

As a young man, Toews attended and graduated from The University of Winnipeg in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. He credits the University with providing him with a solid liberal arts education which contributed significantly to his later success.

Aside from the practical research, writing and other academic skills he developed during the course of his studies at the University of Winnipeg, he is particularly appreciative of the love of literature, and especially poetry, that a number of his professors instilled in him.

His considerable career achievements are directly attributable to the skills he developed during the course of his studies at this university.

Toews practiced law with the Manitoba provincial Department of Justice from 1976 to 1991. In the course of that employment he served as a Crown prosecutor and a Crown attorney in civil legal services. In 1987 he was appointed Director of Constitutional Law for the Province of Manitoba. In that capacity he represented the Attorney General in many important constitutional cases at all levels of court, including a number of cases before the Supreme Court of Canada.

He acted as legal counsel to the Premier of Manitoba at the Meech Lake Accord discussions in 1990 and was appointed Queen’s Counsel by the Government of Manitoba in 1991.

During his time at the provincial Department of Justice Toews developed and implemented laws that were designed to enhance public confidence in the Justice system. For example, he introduced Manitoba’s administrative “suspended and drunk driving” measures which allow police to immediately suspend the licenses of intoxicated drivers and seize the vehicles of suspended drivers. It’s fair to say this law has prevented hundreds of deaths and injuries. Since their adoption by the Province of Manitoba

these laws have also been adopted in many provinces across Canada.

After a distinguished legal career, in 1995 Toews entered provincial politics. He was elected as the Member of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly for Rossmere and shortly thereafter was appointed Minister of Labour. From 1997 until 1999, he served as the Attorney General and Minister of Justice for the Province of Manitoba.

Toews was first elected to the House of Commons in 2000 and re-elected in 2004, 2006 and 2008. He has served as the Justice critic while in opposition and in government he has served in three consecutive cabinet positions. In February 2006 he was appointed Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, in January 2007 he was named President of the Treasury Board, and in January 2010 he was named Minister of Public Safety.

While he is the elected representative for the riding of Provencher in Manitoba, the Prime Minister has also given him the distinct honour of serving Manitoba as its Regional Minister for the Government of Canada. In this capacity he works to represent all Manitobans.

Toews has always shown a strong interest in educational matters and has lectured from time to time on various legal and governmental issues at the University of Winnipeg.

Toews is grateful to have had the opportunity to serve the people of his province and his country as a public servant. He is known by colleagues as a hardworking and committed Member of Parliament. He is proud to represent Manitoba, and to represent The University of Winnipeg as an alumnus.

Collegiate and the Faculty of Science and is made possible because of the dedication of professors such as Biernacka, the late Randy Kobes and Vesna Milosevic-Zdjelar.

During the summer months, UWinnipeg’s Science Outreach initiatives continue as Biernacka works with the Community School Investigator’s program, run through the Social Planning Council of Winnipeg, to offer science day camps to about 300 elementary children. They have been attending the camp every July for the past 4 years. She also co-organized successful science-oriented activities at the Manitoba Children’s Museum.

Beata Biernacka makes a difference by sharing enthusiasm about science with students of every age and with teachers. She is an exceptional community role model and The University of Winnipeg is proud to present her with the Marsha Hanen Award for Excellence in Creating Community Awareness.

Beata Biernacka has devoted herself to making science accessible, interesting and relevant to young people, and most notably, to inner-city youth.

“Let’s Talk Science” inspires children to learn more about the world and opens the door to a lifetime of discovery and inquiry. Since 2003, Biernacka has been coordinating and growing The University of Winnipeg’s Science Outreach program, matching inner-city teachers with UWinnipeg students who then visit their classes to present science experiments. The program also brings students and their teachers onto our campus to observe how scientists conduct scientific inquiries.

In addition to her regular biology teaching duties, Biernacka has had great success recruiting students to volunteer and give career talks in school and judge science fairs. She is training students to work with school children and design activities that fit with the Manitoba Science Curriculum. She has also worked with First nations, giving presentations to teachers and students during the Peguis Science, Engineering and Technology Symposium.

Biernacka actively embraces the Eco-Kids on Campus program, planning curriculum activities and recruiting students to assist in teaching children from Strathcona School who visit once a week for 10 weeks. This program was organized by the Innovative Learning Centre, the

Lawrence Updike, BTh, BA Distinguished Alumni Award

Larry Updike has been using his voice to entertain and enlighten since he was from a young age. As a boy he performed throughout southern Ontario as a part of a family singing ensemble. After high school Updike completed theological training and was ordained a minister at 21.

He entered the field that would define his career as a way to supplement his income from the ministry. Radio, however, soon became his full time job. He rose to prominence in Winnipeg as one half of rock radio’s “Tom and Larry Show” in the 1980s.

Faith continued to play a significant role in his life and Updike returned to school in order to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Theology, graduating in 1986. A second degree, this time a Bachelor of Arts (Philosophy), came after. He continued to work in radio during this time.

CJOB came calling in 1995 and Updike took on a number of hosting responsibilities before finally moving to “The CJOB

Morning Show” which he hosted until the fall of 2009.

In September 2009 Updike surprised many when he announced that he would leave broadcasting to become spokesperson for Siloam Mission where he became a voice for Winnipeg’s poor and homeless.

After almost a year at Siloam Mission, Updike returned to radio to host CBC’s afternoon program “Up to Speed.”

Updike’s passion for public service has been the hallmark of his career. He’s been awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Jubliee Medal for his work with War Amps and has been inducted into the Manitoba Broadcaster’s Hall of Fame.

the students as well as benefit the university. She is an administrator that contributed to the student-centered environment with success and effectiveness and her contributions are in fact much greater than any description can imply.

Graham provided the strong foundation on which many committees relied due to her knowledge of procedures and past practices coupled with her keen desire that the rules be applied firmly, fairly and consistently. Her honed problem solving skills were an asset in any situation, which helped her negotiate successfully with all parties involved, which benefited the committees she served and the University.

The Robin H. Farquhar Award for Excellence in Contributing to Self-Governance is usually given to a faculty member, however, Graham has certainly earned this recognition due to her excellent contribution to the self governance and commitment to UWinnipeg for close to a quarter century.

Judy Graham served her students and the University of Winnipeg since 1986 in a variety of roles as well as on numerous committees that has greatly contributed to UWinnipeg’s self-governance before her retirement in Spring 2010.

Graham exemplified integrity, attention to detail, compassion and willingness to extend her self beyond the call of duty. She did an outstanding job participating in all aspects of various committees and contributing to UWinnipeg’s self-governance as she worked diligently to ensure the committees function smoothly.

Her dedicated committee work has contributed to the efficiency of UWinnipeg and a few of her long list of committees include the Research Committee of the Board of Regents – the Senate Ethics Committee – the Senate Appeals Committee – the GFC Hounours Committee – Financial Appeals. Graham also served on various search committees including the Dean of Student Services and the Vice President of Academic.

Graham understood that the committee’s regarding academic regulations directly effected the students and would ensure that these decisions would better serve

The University of WinnipegCoat of Arms

T he Coat of Arms of The University of Winnipeg was officially adopted by the governing bodies of the University during the academic session of 1972-73. The elements found within the Coat of Arms have been associated over the years with both Manitoba and Wesley Colleges, the ancestors of United College. The

bunch of grapes in the lower portion of the inner shield derives from the Coat of Arms of Manitoba College. The grape symbol has its origin in the College seal adopted in the charter of 1871. The cross, the lamp, and the open book derive from the Coat of Arms of Wesley College, designed in 1897 by Dr. J.H. Riddell. The cross, the symbol of sacrificial service in the interest of humanity, was the basis for his design and upon it he placed a shield, the symbol of protection. The lamp, the symbol of light, also represents learning, to which the Colleges have been devoted to for over a century in the Province of Manitoba. The open book, representing instruction in the way of life and the bringing of understanding to the student, symbolizes knowledge in a general sense, although it may carry overtones of the Holy Scriptures in a more limited interpretation.

The motto, placed upon a scroll below, is the United College motto, her retained: Lux et Veritas Floreant (Let Light and Truth Flourish). The words catch the central import of the lamp (light) and the open book (truth), and express the hope that both may flourish (as the grape) in our country (the cross).

Academic Dress

Academic dress originated in medieval times to provide warmth in the damp halls of learning. In its present form it includes a gown, hood (worn over the shoulders), and a cap or mortarboard. All universities have distinctive dress for each degree offered which explains the variety seen in the academic procession.

University of Winnipeg academic dress conforms to the North American Intercollegiate Code. All graduates wear a black gown which varies according to the degree conferred. The bachelor’s gown is worn closed in front and is distinguished by its pointed sleeves. The master’s gown is designed to be worn either open or closed in front and has closed sleeves with an opening to free the hands. The front portion of the sleeve below the opening has a long semi-circular cut-out. Doctorate gowns also may be worn open or closed. They are faced with velvet.

The edging colour on the hood indicates the faculty in which a degree is conferred: Theology – red; Science – gold; Education – blue; Arts – white. The width of edging is determined by the degree: three inches for doctors; two inches for masters and bachelors. Hoods are lined in red with a white chevron.

Honorary doctors’ gowns are red in colour and are faced with white velvet. They are worn with red Tudor bonnets. The hood colour signifies the honorary degree: white for Laws; golden yellow for Science; admiralty blue for Letters; purple for Divinity. Hoods are lined in red and white, The University of Winnipeg colours. Fellows wear a gown of blue with neither hat nor hood. Members of the University’s senior administration wear gowns of varying colours. They do not wear hoods.

The Banner

T he banner, prominently displaying the Coat of Arms, was unveiled in 1988. The volunteer effort of Pat Corner, Fran Farquhar, Susan Ferguson, and Sonya C. Wright took more than 1,000 hours. Over 400 meters of thread and 30 meters of wool material went into the project using traditional techniques such as quilting,
