RC Laser Fleet Hosts North Americans Regatta The Lake Naomi Club Sailing Association’s newest fleet: RC Laser Fleet #9, began

sailing on Lake Naomi last summer, continued throughout the winter in the CC pool and has made it to the big time with the announcement that LNC will be hosting the 2010 North Americans this fall. RC Laser sailing is a world wide sport and growing in num-bers daily. Some LNC Members have taken their RC Lasers all over the US for regional and district regattas and are now bringing that knowledge home to host this Nationals level regatta. Friday, September 10th through Sunday, September 12th, RC sailors from all over will be sailing on Lake Naomi off of Club Beach. The RC Lasers are patterned after the original Laser but are ¼ the size and are radio controlled (hence the RC) with a two lever remote control to operate the main sheet and tiller. Some say the best part of sailing them is you don’t ever risk getting wet. They are definitely fun to watch and all should consider themselves invited to come see what should be a fun weekend in Sep-tember. You can also learn more by stopping by one of the many practice sail dates and race dates listed in the Sailing Schedule on page 17 of the back section of the Summer Calendar. As always your fellow sailors invite you to come join those who already have their boat and try it out yourself.

Operation 45Per the report in the last issue of Reflections, the Strategic Planning Committee will

make a presentation on the status of the Draft Strategic Plan at the Club’s August 14, 2010 Annual Meeting.

The Draft Strategic Plan will then be posted on the Club’s website (Members Sec-tion of www.LakeNaomiClub.com) from August 15th through September 30th for Club Member comment. Club Members are urged to take advantage of “Operation 45” to review the Draft Strategic Plan.

As an on-going part of the Strategic Plan, the Club is planning to survey the Members in 2011 or 2012. The results of the Member comment period and the survey will be used to further update the Strategic Plan. Once adopted by the Board of Governors and Board of Trustees, the Strategic Plan will be used as a working document and will be updated a minimum of once a year.

The Strategic Plan is very different than the Facilities Master Plan which deals only with Club Facilities. The Facilities Master Plan is handled independent of the Strategic Plan by the Long Range Planning Committee.

2010. As of July 21, 2010, Club Membership stood at 1557. For this same time period in 2009, Club Membership was at 1561. Now would be a great time to invite your colleagues and friends to Lake Naomi – Timber Trails to experience the Club’s many wonderful facilities, programs and people.

Facilities Master PlanThe Club’s Long Range Planning Committee is spearheading the development of a

Facilities Master Plan for the Lake Naomi – Timber Trails Community. The Facilities Master Plan is zeroing in on the following projects:

• Renovation of the Beach Level of the Clubhouse in order to create a family friendly dining venue.• Updating the Golf Center. • Additions to the Timber Trails Pool in order to make it more family friendly.• Updating the Timber Trails Clubhouse.• Expanding the aerobic, fitness center, locker rooms and outdoor sports areas at the Community Center.• Expansion of the Lake Naomi Clubhouse.Member input is always helpful. If there is a facility enhancement you would like

to see in the future, kindly provide your suggestion to the Club in writing by mail-ing it to the Club at PO Box T, Pocono Pines, PA 18350 or emailing it to the Club at admin@LakeNaomiClub.com.Bridge Project Scheduled for Fall Completion

Substantial progress has been made on the pedestrian/bicycle bridge and trail along Route 423 from Woodland Avenue to Firehouse Road. The path portion of the project is on hold while the one hundred foot bridge is being manufactured. The bridge is scheduled for delivery in October. Once the bridge is installed, the balance of the project will be ready for completion.

The pedestrian/bicycle bridge and trail project is a partnership project between the Club and Tobyhanna Township and is being funded by a $308,000 grant from the PA Department of Transportation. Once completed, bicycles and pedestrians should never again interfere with traffic on the one lane bridge.

Trivia Night winners. The brains behind the team were: Kathryn & Brian Dixon, Marjorie & Alan Seger, Louise & William Donadio and Kathy & George Bishop. The Club’s next Trivia Night will be Sunday, August 29th. You don’t want to miss the fun. What is Trivia Night? The game is divided into two halves, each with three rounds of questions. Each round will have three questions from a variety of categories and each round will have point value assigned to it. Teams will gain points for each correct answer and be tallied at halftime before the final question. The final question can be given a point value of 0-20 points based on the team’s wager. Teams can consist of six or eight people. Sign up together and create a team name. Don’t have a team? It’s okay… Sign up as a single or couple and you will be assigned to a team! Facebook WorkshopThe Lake Naomi Club has been extremely suc-

cessful with launching the social media campaign this summer. However there are some Members who are totally new to the social media front and would like to join the Facebook fan club but do not know where to begin. On Tuesday, August 17th at 2:00 PM Communications Manager Laura Altemose and Summer Photographer Kelsey Lamberton will be conducting a Facebook workshop. Stop in the Adult Activity Room at the Community Center and learn how to set up your own Facebook account and become a fan of the Lake Naomi Club fan page. There will be computers available so Laura and Kelsey will have you all set up and ready to start your new Facebook journey of seeing the LNC posting but also con-necting with your long lost friends. Are you an “expert” and would like to share your tips with the group? Stop in, we would love to learn from you too.

Volunteer Spotlight ‘Still Waters Run Deep’ came to my mind as I explored twenty-five

years of LNC experiences with Kathy Manzella. How little we know about someone from just casual encounters. How so many people in our community have such interesting and varied backgrounds. How lucky we are as a community of diverse people to have these differences in talents and experiences that come together within Lake Naomi-Timber Trails.

Kathy and her family, (husband Joe, son Zach and daughter Abby), have vacationed here since their home was built in 1982. Looking around the Poconos in the early 80’s for a place their family could “come to camp together” they were introduced to this community by friends who had recently built here.

Since Kathy taught in the Reading School District, (she still teaches there although she did teach for about a year and a half in the Pocono Mountain School District), and their primary residence is in the Reading geographic area, this wooded vacation com-munity seemed perfect for them. It has proven over the years to have been the right decision. The family loved the nature, quiet and recreational activities this commu-nity provided and have seen it grow and improve through the years.

Kathy always enjoyed swimming and at the time the Manzella’s chose LNC mem-bership the family could have focused on the pool as their only activity option, but they decided to extend their membership to include tennis and golf for the enjoyment of other family members and to give them an opportunity to experience other activi-ties. Tennis offered not only an enjoyable exercise sport but Kathy soon met many LNC friends and became a committed Tennis Committee member.

Because of her experience as president of her local school board and her commit-ment to this community, Kathy became a member of the LNC Board of Governors serving as an at-large Board member, the Board Secretary and moving on to serve as the first woman chair of the BOG. During her tenure with this Board, the expansion of the Board to include Committee Chairs as advisory participants was established, an organizational structure change that remains in place today.

Her contributions to LN-TT have been recognized and extend over the years to include time spent with the LNC Board of Trustees for two five- year terms. While serving on the BOT, the Pocono Pines Community Association (PPCA) was estab-lished in response to the time that our dam required repair and it became obvious that a method for sharing the commitment for preserving the community needed to be broader than just the LNC members. Kathy served as a member of this new entity and is currently contributing to the larger community management by PPCA Board membership.

A BOG business committee, Finance, currently has the good fortune to have Kathy as a contributing member.

The Manzella family continues to vacation, play, relax and contribute here in Lake Naomi. Their children participated here when children and worked here as young adults. When I planted the idea of possible retirement here, Kathy indicated that because they so love the idea of getting away to this environment, she’s not sure it would be the same for her if it became her primary residence.

There is a unique energy at LN-TT shown by our members that Kathy feels“if it could be harnessed could run a city”.

Women’s Health Forum PlannedThe Activities Committee is planning a Women’s

Health Forum for October 8, 2010. This will be an informative morning for the ladies of LNC to listen to guest speakers and local health professionals. Be ready to move as the day will start and end with a light exercise session and also include a light lunch. Look for details at the Community CenterBook Club

The Book Club meets regularly on the second Monday of the month at 1:00 PM at the Community Center and is always open to new participants. Everyone is welcome – even if you haven’t read the book. The discussions talk about the book, the writing style and if it was favorable to everyone’s tastes, but does not give the plot away. Square Dancing An evening of Square Dancing is scheduled for Club

Members on Friday, August 20th and September 3rd. Swing your partner from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM at the Community Center. This event will continue into the fall at the Clubhouse on October 15th and November 19th. Member John Kaltenthaler will be calling for all events.

Acrylic Painting Class An acrylic painting class will continue

this fall and run for seven weeks beginning Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at 9 AM. This class will be taught by local well known artist, Steve Kager. Cost of classes is $85 per person and will be held at the Lo-gan Steele Community Center. Call the Community Center at 570-646-8585 or stop by to register.

Upcoming Quilting ClassKeep watching out for more information on an upcoming

Rules of the RoadWalking and bike riding are two of the more popular

activities that people do in Lake Naomi – Timber Trails. With the amount of traffic on Lake Naomi – Timber Trails roads and the number of walkers and bikers, here are a few safety tips.

1. The Speed limit on the roads in the Timber Trails Com- munity is 25 miles per hour. Speed is monitored by the Patrol Rangers using radar.2. In Lake Naomi, the speed limit is 25 mph unless otherwise posted. Speed enforcement details are conducted regularly by Pocono Mountain Regional Police using state of the art speed detection technology.3. When walking, always walk on the left side of the road – facing traffic.4. Bike riders are to ride on the right side of the road – with traffic.5. When traffic approaches, walkers and cyclists are to move to the side of the road and walk or ride single file.6. Make use of bike/pedestrian paths whenever possible!7. Bike helmets are encouraged for all bike riders. Pennsylva- nia State law requires helmets for all children under the age of 12 riding bicycles.8. Drive extra cautiously in the area of Lake Naomi–Timber Trails amenities.9. When walking or jogging at night, please wear white or reflective clothing.10. .......Share the Road.

Hot Off the Press“Pocono Pines ... Then & Now” makes

history fun to read! Written by Club Member Frederick A. Lehrer this book features over 100 vintage photographs with corresponding contemporary views and documents the evolution of our town from its founding in the late nineteenth century

until the present day. Accompanying text provides the most comprehensive history of the area available in one volume. Exhibits include interpretive maps and a tabular chronology.

The quality of the presentation is second to none. Images are of generous size, printed two per page, in an 8 ½ x 11-inch format. Photo-offset printing, used with paper of the high-est quality, provides spectacular color rendition and excellent detail. This book is a must-have volume for all who live or vacation in the area!

All proceeds from the sale of this book in excess of the out-of-pocket costs of printing are being donated to the Clymer Library, which has served Pocono Pines and the adjoining area since 1906.

A limited printing is now on sale at the Administrative Of-fice and other Pocono Pines locations. The 107-page book will be offered at $25 (versus $35 list price) exclusively through these outlets. Early purchase is strongly recommended.

Refund PolicyIn order to receive a refund for Summer Activities

it is important to follow certain guidelines. A refund request form can be obtained at the Community Center or online at www.LakeNaomiClub.com and must be submitted to the Community Center. To receive a refund for recreation programs, classes and trips, the cancellation must be received 48 hours in advance or the space needs to be filled by another participant if the cancellation is under the 48 hour time frame. The refund must be approved by the Department Manager and a $5.00 pro-cessing fee will be charged. If payment for the program was made using a credit card, the refund less the $5.00 will be issued to the credit card, otherwise a check will be is-sued. All recreation program refunds will be issued the week of September 20, 2010.

To receive a refund for Kids Klub, Afternoon Klub or Kub Klub the refund request must be submitted to the Administrative Office or online. There will be a $25.00 processing fee that will be deducted from the refund. If payment for the program was made using a credit card, the refund less the $25.00 will be issued to the credit card, otherwise a check will be issued. All Kids Klub, Afternoon Klub and Kub Klub refunds will be issued within 30 days of the request.

Girls’ Night Out Join us for a trip to Poke-A-Nose

Pottery located in Bartonsville on Monday, August 9th for a fun night of painting and female bonding. Painting at this cute little shop will be from 5:00 -7:00 PM and then it is a hop, skip and a jump over to Dale’s Café for dinner. Cost of $30 per per-son includes the studio fee, transpor-tation and dinner. Price of the piece to paint will be extra and are to be paid individually that evening. Meet at the Community Center at 4:15 PM on Monday, August 10th with a 9:00 PM scheduled return time. Register at the Community Center.

Liztech Bead BashJoin us on Saturday, September

4th from 1:30-3:00 PM for a Liztech Bead Bash! What is a Liztech bead bash do you ask? This is where a lo-cal jeweler from the Liztech Gallery in East Stroudsburg brings 80 pounds of beads to Lake Naomi and allows you to make and keep as much jew-elry as you can finish in 90 minutes. It is estimated that 5-6 memory wire bracelets can be made in this amount of time. Everyone will start off mak-ing a bracelet just to get acquainted and then can move on to necklaces and earrings. The cost is $20 per person for this event. Participants must be at least 14 years old to at-tend without adult supervision. For more information on Liztech visit www.liztech.com. Outdoor Family Movies at Club BeachThe last three movies of the Summer scheduled for August 22nd and 29th will be un-

der the stars at Club Beach. Bring the whole family and your beach blankets to enjoy the show on the big screen right after the sun sets (around 8:00 PM). There will be no admission charge. The café will be open prior to the movie starting and for a short time after each movie begins, so get your snacks early! Each week’s feature will be listed in the Weekly Flyer. Come out and join us to experience the fun of the outdoor movie.

Lake Naomi Club’s Got Talent We want to see your talent! This year we have

changed up our talent showcase. The Kids Klub will be having a talent show on Thursday, August 12th at the Community Center starting at 6:00 PM. This opens up the stage to all talents in our first Lake Naomi Club’s Got Talent search on Tuesday, August 17th at Club Beach. If you sing, do magic, are a ven-triloquist, or have some other fun talent, sign up at the Community Center by August 16th so we can get your act in the showcase. The cookout will be from 5:30 -7:30 PM with the show starting at 6:00 PM. Our panel of judges will be awarding prizes. Let’s show the world that the Lake Naomi Club’s got talent!

Pre-Teen and Teen Club Nights There is still time to sign up for the Pre-teen and Teen Club nights. These events

are held each year as a formal celebration of the summer. Teens (grades 9 and up) get to have a buffet dinner at the Lake Naomi Clubhouse and dance to a DJ in this “Tropical Paradise” themed evening. The Pre-Teens (Grade 6 thru 8) enjoy hot hors- d’oeuvres and a DJ in our “Winter Wonderland” at Timber Trails Clubhouse. Teen Club Night is August 10th from 7:30-11:00 PM, Pre-teen Club Night is August 11th 7:00-10:00 PM. Clubhouse attire is required. Garden News

The LNC Community Garden has been growing a bountiful harvest this year. Twenty two Member families were assigned a 10x10 garden box this past spring. Although all the available space for this season has been taken, the Club is offering educational ses-sions with special guest speakers who are experts in various garden related topics. All Members are welcome to attend. The Club will host a Harvest Party to celebrate the success of our labors on August 28, 2010. House Checking ServiceHave you ever worried about your

home in Lake Naomi or Timber Trails while you were away from the Com-munity for any length of time? Here is your peace of mind:

Beginning on October 1st for as little as $1.00 a day you can have a Member of the Lake Naomi-Timber Trails Ranger Staff check the exterior of your home. Other services such as interior checks, heat adjustment and alarm response are also available for an additional fee. Bocce Ball TournamentA kids’ bocce ball tournament will be held on Saturday, August 7th at 2 PM at the

Lake Naomi Pool court. Winners of the tournament will take home a trophy! Teams (consisting of two people) must sign up at the Community Center ahead of time with a cost of $5 per team.

Wet-N-Wild Western Day It is time to gather up the entire gang for the third

annual Wet n Wild Western Day at the Lake Naomi Pool. On Saturday, August 7th from 12-6 PM join the Lake Naomi Aquatic Staff for a fun filled day of themed activities for all ages, music and a western buffet for all pool Members to enjoy. In addition, the very popular Tiki Bar will be back. Registration is not necessary for the event just show up in your western gear ready for a great time!

Picnic Area at LNPBecause outside food may not be

brought into the pool areas, a small picnic area is available at the lake end of the LNP parking lot for those who prefer to bring their own food to the pool. We very much appre-ciate your cooperation in helping us to keep the pools and areas sur-rounding the pool free from insects and other pests that are attracted to food and snacks and we hope you’ll enjoy sitting lakeside if you’d like to eat food brought from home.

Pool Reminders Use of flotation devices are limited

to those items attached to the child in both the Timber Trails Pool, Lake Naomi Pool (wading pool not includ-ed) and Community Center Pool.

Children who cannot swim must be supervised by an adult in the water or on the waters edge. Water toys may be brought into the wading pool only at LN Pool and may be approved for the CC Pool and TT Pool but only at times the lifeguard feels they are manageable. These reminders are to help assure the best of our Summer days at the pool for all.

Open Water Swimming This year Club Beach began offering Open Water Swimming on Saturday evenings

from 6:00 – 7:00 PM. Swimmers meet in the Sailing Office located on the beach level of the Lake Naomi Clubhouse at 5:50 PM to register and swim a marked course with a dedicated Safety Boat nearby. The last Saturday for swimming in the lake is August 14th. Don’t miss your chance to swim with other Masters at a time set aside just for honing your open water swimming skills.

the Lake Naomi Tennis Center Pro Shop from Memorial Day to Labor Day. McKee Tennis provides the shop with its trendy, colorful athletic attire for wear both on and off the courts.

When purchasing mulch for landscaping around your home, make use of earth tone colors and avoid bright colored mulch (such as reds, blues and greens) which does not blend into our wooded environment. Beach RemindersNow that summer is in full swing,

what is better than a day on the beach with friends, family and a pic-nic basket? The Club would like to remind Members that picnicking at the beaches is only permitted on the grassy areas at Club Beach and Tim-ber Trails Beach. All Members and their Guests are asked to refrain from bringing any type of glass or pets onto the beaches. All beaches are also non-smoking. The guidelines are in place to preserve our beaches. Please respect your fellow Members and adhere to these guidelines.

Tennis Club Championship Tournaments Don’t miss the Club Championship Tournaments at Lake Naomi Tennis. Although

the Adult Singles and Doubles and Junior Matches have already been played, the Adult Mixed Doubles Matches are quickly approaching. Spectators are invited to watch from the decks as competitive Tennis is played at our courts. The Mixed Doubles begin Au-gust 7th & 8th and finish with their Semi-Finals and Finals on Saturday, August 14th and

Sunday, August 15th. Times of play are determined to suit the draw and are posted at the Lake Naomi Tennis Pro Shop. The Courtside Café will be open with extended hours as needed for the weekends of Champion-ships. A Tournament Play Menu is also available for pre purchasing your choice of three breakfast options specially prepared by our Chef for you, including courtside delivery. Please come out and show your support to the Tennis Members who participate in this great Club tradition. Tennis Generation Gap Event

The Generation Gap will be run this year as a mixed up mixed doubles event where Members of different generations are encouraged to play together. Any combination of man/man, woman/woman, woman/man, child/parent etc. is an appropriate team so long as the team is composed of players of different generations with at least a 25 year age difference.

The event will take place at 11:00 AM on both Saturday, August 21st and Sunday, August 22nd. Teams will play best two of three sets and may play in separate brackets depending on the number of teams who sign up to play and the ages of the youngest participants included on the teams. The entry fee of $15 per Gold team and $25 per Silver team is due at the time of sign-up by the registration deadline which is Wednes-day, August 18th at 3:00 PM.

This event will be run by the Club staff with the assistance of the Tennis Committee and should be a fun event for both players and spectators to enjoy.

Mid-Season Tennis Reminders Now that the Tennis Season is in

full “swing” we’d like to point out the importance of practicing proper court etiquette. Abiding by simple guidelines helps keep our facilities clean, safe and enjoyable for the en-tire Membership. Members are re-minded to close court doors, avoid walking across other player’s courts and to speak quietly on the deck, especially when others are playing nearby. All courts have trash cans on the ends of the nets for the disposal of empty cups, water bottles, ball can tops and canisters. Please use the cigarette butt container provided at the entrances of the Tennis facili-ties to allow for proper cigarette butt disposal. Pets are not permitted at the Tennis facilities and may not be tied up at the entrances. Each facility provides bike racks for proper bike storage. Please use them to store and lock your bikes rather than the trees at the entrances. Ringers on cell phones must be turned off at the Tennis fa-cilities. Children under eight years of age are not permitted to be left unat-tended at the Tennis Complexes.

Adult and Junior Members are re-quired to adhere to the Tennis Dress Code. Attire is to be approved Ten-nis apparel and footwear only, as de-termined by the Lake Naomi Club. Only sneakers with soles that will not cause damage to the court surface may be worn. Shirts with collars (for men) are a requirement in order to play tennis at the Lake Naomi Ten-nis Center or Timber Trails Tennis Complex. Sweaters and sweatshirts without collars and without distract-ing patterns are permitted. In pro-tecting the integrity of the game, ABSOLUTELY NONE of the fol-lowing will be permitted: cut-offs, jeans, cargo shorts, boxer shorts, tops exposing the bare midriff, T-shirts or non-athletic shorts or pants. In the event of questionable attire, the deci-sion of Management will be final.

Did you know… the courts at LN are reserved in blocks of four rotating on the half hour. This insures every time has equal opportunity for players to reserve their courts… but remem-ber you may only reserve two days in advance and not before 8 AM.

Recreation Tennis Court Reservations The Recreation Tennis Courts on Woodland and Naomi Avenues

by North Beach are available daily from 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM during the main summer season, through Labor Day. Members may make a one hour reservation for one court, up to two days in advance, by calling the Lake Naomi Tennis Pro Shop at 646-7580 after 8:00 AM. The reservation sheet will then be posted on the Recreational Courts Bulletin Board prior to each morning’s opening. Members wishing to reserve and play on the same day may do so in person by signing-up on the reservation sheet for play. Members without reservations may walk on the courts anytime there are no reservations listed. A ten-minute grace period is given, after which the court becomes available for registration by another player. Any Member interested in using the Recreation Tennis Courts after Labor Day may play while the courts are unlocked, but will need to sign the daily play sheet as the courts go back to first come first “serve” use after Labor Day.

Have You Tried the Training Courts?Both the Sportwall and Ball Machine courts are running strong and being utilized

with great success. Members may call in advance to reserve these areas just like they do with the Tennis Courts. There is a $10 per half hour of court time fee for the ball machine and a $5 per half hour of court time fee for the Sportwall. These areas are just one more way to expand your tennis workout during the sum-mer season. Contact the Tennis Proshop for more information.

Junior Championship Sailing RegattaAttention Young Members… this is your weekend

for sailing! A two-day Regatta is planned just for Junior Sailors on August 14th and 15th beginning at Noon each day. The regular adult racing schedule takes a break these two days so the safety boats, Club sailboats and Race Committee TIKI are all dedicated to the Juniors for the weekend. Sailors must register to race in advance with the Sailing Office by Tuesday, August 10th. At that time you must also sign-up for the optional boxed lunch and register to use a Club Sunfish if you do not have a boat of your own. PLEASE DO THIS RIGHT AWAY as we often must ask for Sailing Committee Members to loan their boats if we have more Juniors needing boats then what the Club has in the fleet. Don’t miss this fun weekend set aside in honor of our young sailors. PLEASE NOTE: This date has changed from the original posting in the summer calendar.Family Sailing Tailgate Party

The Lake Naomi Club Sailing Association is hosting a Family Sailing Tailgate Party in honor of the Junior Regatta on Friday, August 13th from 5:30 PM-8:00 PM at Club Beach. Families involved in or planning to watch the race should plan to kick off the junior weekend on Friday for a night of socializing, fun and the ever popular kayak relays. You can bring your dinner to the beach that evening, which is not a regular Club policy. Although the pic-nicking on the beach policy will be relaxed for this event, the NO GLASS on the beach policy will not. A sundae bar will be set up by the Clubhouse for dessert and those kids who participate in the Junior Regatta will receive their sundae free of charge. The Club Beach café will remain open late that evening for those who would like to participate without bringing a dinner. Individuals and teams interested in participating in the kayak relays must register in advance with the Sailing Office. Don’t miss this great night of family fun on the beach with the Sailing Association, Instructors and partici-pants of the Junior Sailing Program.End of Junior Sailing Program Celebration

The Junior Sailing six week instructional program ends with the Junior Regatta and the End of Program Celebration being held on Sunday, August 15th at 6:30 PM at the Logan Steele Community Center Pavillion. All Junior Instructional Program partici-pants are invited to attend the pizza party held by the Sailing Instructors and Sailing Association. There is no cost for this celebration, however pre-registration is required. Please contact the Sailing Office no later than Saturday, August 14th. The season’s sailing memento will be presented to all the participants as will the awards for the A and B Fleet Race Champions and the annual special achievement awards. The Junior Regatta results and trophies will also be presented. Mark your calendars now as this is a night the Junior Sailors should not miss.

Duster Sailing NationalsAugust 21st & 22nd is the weekend

for you to get out on the lake to par-ticipate in the best Duster sailing of the summer. Duster sailing has been a tradition in our area and on our Lake for over 60 years. The Lake Naomi Club remains one of the only very active Duster Fleets upholding that tradition. Duster Sailors from around the region still recognize Lake Naomi as a great place for competi-tive Duster sailing and are invited to participate in this annual event.

Saturday, August 21st

9:00 AM Regatta Registration, 10:00 AM Skippers Meeting at Club Beach, 10:30 AM First of Three Rac-es. Regatta fee is $30 per boat which includes a boxed lunch and trophies for winners.

Saturday Night there will be an available group reservation in the Clubhouse for those wishing to cele-brate the regatta together over dinner. Preregistration required by Wednes-day, August 18th.

12:00 PM – Duster Races 4 & 5 will be followed by an Awards pre-sentation at approximately 4 PM.

End of Season Sailing CelebrationAll sailors who participated in any of the 2010 adult sailing races and regattas are

invited to attend the End of Season Celebration held Monday, September 6th in the Lake Naomi Clubhouse Main Dining Room at 10:00 AM. All the season’s race results and awards will be presented by the Fleet Captains. Don’t miss this opportunity to recap the season, share stories and socialize with your fellow sailors. Chef Will and the Club-house Staff look forward to serving the Sailing group so please help them to adequately prepare by PRE-REGISTERING with the Sailing Office no later than Wednesday, September 1st. There is no cost for this event but you must pre-register.

Important Change to 2010 Sailing ScheduleThe last two sailing events of the summer are being flipped

this year. The Annual End of Season Sailing Celebration and Awards Ceremony will be held on Monday, September 6th rather than Sunday as it has in years past. The event will be a brunch beginning at 10:00AM followed by awards.

The annual open Sailing Association Meeting typically held on Monday will be held at 4:00 PM on Sunday, September, 5th.

Both events will take place in the location as originally planned with brunch in the LNCH and the meeting in the Owaissa Room on the beach level of the LNCH.

We hope this change is not too much of an inconvenience to the participants. PLEASE remember, although there is no cost for the End of Season Celebration, you MUST register in advance in the Sailing Office by Wednesday, September 1st.

LNC Sailing Association Annual Meeting

The Annual Meeting and Elec-tion of Officers of the Lake Nao-mi Club Sailing Association will be held at 4:00 PM on Sunday, September 5th in the Owaissa Room on the Beach Level of the Lake Naomi Clubhouse. This is an open meeting and all Club Members are invited to attend. A summary of the Summer’s events will be provided and suggestions for the 2011 season will be re-ceived for further planning by the Sailing Committee and Manage-ment throughout the year.

Golf Course Etiquette As a general reminder, we think it is

important to reiterate some of the basic principles of behavior on and around a golf course, particularly at a private club like ours. Repair and maintenance of the golf course is not just a job for the Timber Trails Golf Maintenance Team. So let’s all lend a hand. Fix your ball mark and one other. Replace your div-ots. If the divot cannot be effectively replaced, please use the sand/seed mix-ture instead. This is most important on the teeing areas as they are subject to heavy use and require everyone’s at-tention. Also, we ask that all rakes be placed inside the bunkers.

With regard to “tees”, used and/or broken tees should be removed from the ground and placed in the contain-ers provided in the tee box areas on each hole. This may seem like a mi-nor concern, but be assured the build up of broken tees has been significant. So please help us keep your course free from this type of debris.

We all strive to keep the course in the best possible playing condition. The weather has much to do with the condition of the course. Since none of us can control the weather, we can only react to what the weather provides us. So, when you see the signs that say “Cart Path Only”, remember it is being done so that the course will not be fur-ther damaged by the conditions that the weather has already created. Your coop-eration and assistance is appreciated.

Jeff had a “Hole in One” on the second hole of the tournament. Ray & Jim Tyler won the Net part of this event with a score of 71. The women’s flight was won by Marlene Chismark and her guest Majorie Seger shooting 87. Member/Member Men’s Taking home the gold in the gross division of the Member/Member event was Mike Cunningham with his partner Joe Varacalli with a score of 71. The Net division was won by Nat Alcamo and Jerry Johnson with a score of 62.Member/Member Ladies Kathy Dixon and Louise Donadio placed first in the women’s gross division with a score of 92. Taking the Net division shooting a score of 61 was Terry Bies and Kathy Manzella.Summer Bloody Mary The Summer Bloody Mary was captured by Joe Varacalli, Robin Gilman and Arlene King shooting a scintillating round of 33. Fishing Guideline Reminders All fisherpersons must wear their

current Membership ID along with their Pennsylvania Fishing License (required for any person fishing over the age of 16). The Lakes Commit-tee encourages LIVE RELEASE of all trout. All bass and walleye must be live released. Please take special care to not overtire, squeeze or injure the fish. If a fish is deeply hooked, simply cut your line close to the fish’s mouth. Remember practicing catch and release not only increases reproduction, but allows for sport an-other day. One last note – the lakes and stream throughout the commu-nity are shared by fellow Members for various recreational activities. Cleaning up your fishing site thor-oughly is essential as fishing litter like line and hooks can be dangerous to other Members, pets and our wild-life. For that reason Members are not permitted to fish (either on shore or by boat) within 25 feet of any of the Club’s beaches.

Youth Fishing Clinic a Winner

The Youth Fishing Clinic was held on Saturday, July 10th at Trout Pond. Forty young Members registered and worked their way through the various stations the Lakes Commit-tee setup to teach quality tips on ev-erything from fish stocking, baiting a hook, casting and proper fish han-dling. Also big this season are kids fishing lessons on the Pontoon boat. Many kids have taken advantage of the lessons given on Thursday’s by the Lake Committee. Please contact the Community Center for more in-formation and to sign up.

Lake Safety Guidelines. *All watercraft must be equipped with an approved wearable flotation device for EV-

ERY person on board and each boater must carry an “audible device” such as a whistle, to make a sound signal to request help if needed.

*Lake Naomi Club strongly recommends all Members wear their lifejackets equipped with an attached whistle to be prepared for the unexpected. All boaters MUST wear their lifejackets when the yellow “Lifejacket Required” flag is being flown from the Flag Pole Yardarm on the peninsula at Club Beach. Children age 12 and under must wear lifejackets at all times.

*Boating, swimming and sailing in stormy weather is extremely dangerous! Please pay attention to the weather. All watercraft must be brought to shore as soon as the first signs of storms begin to appear. Dark clouds and wind are signs you need to head for shore immediately. Please do not wait until thunder is heard, because lightning is often in the area as well. It is much safer to be proactive when it looks like a storm is “brewing”.

*Boaters and fisherpersons must maintain a safe distance (never closer than 25 feet) from all other boats, beaches, marinas and swimming areas.

*Swimming from watercraft is strongly discouraged. Boats get away from swim-mers much easier than people think and swimmers quickly become exhausted trying to catch them. DO NOT DIVE OR JUMP off watercraft as hidden rocks and stumps can cause very serious injury.

*Swimming in the Lake in areas other than the beaches is only permitted if closely accompanied by an attending boat equipped with a wearable flotation device for both the boater and the swimmer. The boater and swimmer must also be equipped with a “mechanical device” to make a sound signal audible for at least one-half mile (like a whistle) to signal for help if the swimmer were to tire, cramp or need assistance for any other reason. The Sailing Office must be contacted (646-LAKE) in advance to permit Lake Swimming and has the authority to deny lake swimming during times of heavy boating usage or with severe weather pending.

*If you ever hear a whistle on the lake from shore or see something you think is con-cerning, please do not hesitate to contact the Gatehouse (646-2550) to report what you see and hear. The Gatehouse can easily contact our Club Beach Supervisor and Safety Boat Operators by radio.

The Safety Boat Operators have a very large area of water to cover as well as respon-sibilities like running Sailing Regattas and assisting with Instructional Programs. They are there to help you and ask you to follow these listed guidelines to help make our waters a safe place to recreate.

tion tracking system free of charge. Please come to the Administrative Office to register your dog. You will be provided with a numbered tag for your dog insuring the safe return of your beloved pet if found loose in the Lake Naomi – Timber Trails Community. Pets are part of our fam-ily, let’s keep them safe while being considerate of our neigh-bors.

to be recycled. The items they are collecting include: cell phones, laptop computers, Inkjet cartridges, MP3 players, jewelry, digital cameras, GPS, and radar detectors. Gone too SoonSarah Elisabeth Caltrider passed away on July 17,

2010 and will be missed. As seen in the 2004 LNC Calendar picture Sarah (far right) loved spending her summers hanging out at the Lake Naomi pool with her sisters while visiting her Grandma and Grandpa Virginia and Francis Foy. Sarah learned how to swim and developed her love of swimming at Lake Naomi. She was a member of the Lake

Naomi Club swim team and in 2005 Sarah was awarded the Elizabeth Duerr Award. This award is given to a 9 or 10 year old swimmer who demonstrated dedication and out-standing effort. Sarah continued her passion for water sports by receiving a varsity letter for both Swim Team and Water Polo from Mason High School in Michigan. Mom and Dad, Bruce and Suzann Caltrider, are blessed to have a houseful of loving daughters Zoe, Kaitlyn and Chloe who will share many happy memories of their days with Sarah. As we all treasurer our days at LN-TT we should take a moment to truly enjoy the simple joys like hanging at the pool and the ultimate gift of life.

Are dogs permitted on the Community Center grounds?

Dogs are only permitted at the Dog Park located on the right at the entrance to the Community Center. Dogs and pets are not permitted anywhere else on Community Center grounds.

Why doesn’t the Club have fireworks around July 4th?

The Club has had fireworks dis-plays on three different occasions over the past nine years and has found that there just is not enough room at North Beach to safely shoot off the fireworks. Also the permitting process for fireworks has gotten much more complicated and costly.

What is the difference between the Board of Governors, the Committees and the Board of Trustees?

The Committees typically deal with a very specific area of the Club’s operation (i.e. Golf, Club-house, Finance, etc.). The Com-mittees discuss matters that deal with their area of the operation and then make recommendations to the Board of Governors (BOG). The BOG is comprised of Com-mittee Chairs as well as At-Large Members and numbers approxi-mately twenty-five. The BOG is an Advisory Board that make recommendations to the Board of Trustees (BOT). The BOT is the seven Member Board that has the ultimate financial, legal and fidu-ciary responsibility for the Club’s assets and operations.

Press Release………from the HATTThe Historical Association of Tobyhanna Town-

ship (HATT) recently announced plans for its annual excursion. On Tuesday, September 14th attendees will visit the Nemours Estate located in Wilmington Delaware, as well as a visit to the prestigious Simon Pearce Restaurant in West Chester, PA. This trip is open to the public. Membership in HATT is not required.

Nemours Estate is one of the famous DuPont family mansions. Extensive renovations were recently completed, making this site visit a real treat. A tour of this exquisite estate will also be highlighted with a tour of its extensive gardens. Prior to this tour, the group will be served lunch in a private dining room overlooking the Brandywine River at the Simon Pearce Restaurant. Famous for its glass blowing operations, visitors can observe craftsmen at work and visit the gift shop which sells hand-blown and hand finished pieces (20% group discount available).

Departure by deluxe motor coach at 9 AM on Tuesday, September 14th is from the parking lot of the St. Maxamilian Kolbe Church located on Sullivan Trail, old Rt. 940 in Pocono Pines. What is the Club doing to address the large number of users at the Lake Naomi Pool?

The Long Range Planning Com-mittee is looking at a capital en-hancement project that would make the Timber Trails Pool much more family friendly. Under consider-ation are a kids spray park, substan-tial slide, playground, improved restrooms, revamped café and additional parking.
