“Momenting”Have you ever been conscious that a given moment in which you were living would become a memory that would stay with you for the rest of your life? There are, of course, those obvious moments where people remind us to take mental snapshots of each and every second—our weddings, the birth of our children, or perhaps our Bnai Mitzvah. There are some moments, though, that we wouldn’t regard as pivotal life events, but still make us buzz every time we think about them. The
Bible actually has a word for this type of experience, one that doesn’t quite have a perfect translation in English, but might best be described as “momenting,” or the spiritual buzzing that one feels when they realize they have just experienced something important. The word is להפעם (l’hi’pa’eim), stemming from the root פ-ע-ם, which means “moment.”
When Pharaoh awakes from a dream of seven full and healthy cows being swallowed by seven skinny cows; and another dream of seven solid stalks of corn being swallowed up by seven thin stalks, he intuitively knows the dream is important, but he isn’t quite sure why. ויהי בבקר רוחו ”.that morning, when Pharoah awoke from his dream, his soul was “momenting ,ותפעם (Genesis 41:8). One interpretation notes, כפעמון בתוכו his spirit rang within him like a ,מקשקשת bell (pa’amon). Imagine a memory or a feeling that rings so loudly within you, that you can’t possibly forget it. I believe we have all at one point or another experienced “momenting”
This summer, as we seek to make the best out of a time that restricts our interactions with one another, I want to encourage us to engage in experiences that will enable us “to moment,” that is to cause our souls to buzz so much that we can’t possible overlook the profundity of the experience. How might we do this you ask? I have one suggestion: Shabbat on the Beach. Many of us, our children, and our grandchildren have formed some of our fondest Hamptons memories at Shabbat on the Beach. Beginning in July, we will be returning to gather together outside at the beach (while socially distanced) to build memories that you and your family will always remember. They are the memories of feeling sand beneath your toes, the sweet sound of Rabbi Stein, Cantor’s voice being gently carried by the waft of the salty air, the stories that we tell that will help you understand Jewish values, and the experience of coming back together to be in community after having been apart for so long.
We hope that you will join us each and every Friday at 6:00pm at Main Beach for some summer Shabbat on the Beach “momenting.”

REDISCOVERING THE BIBLE
TUESDAY | AUGUST 25 5:00pm with Dr. Joel M. Hoffman
The Bible doesn’t say to love God “with all your heart and all your soul” or that “the Lord is my shepherd.” Those are translation mistakes, just two of many that continue to hide the Bible’s original meaning. Join Dr. Hoffman as he peels back the layers of mistranslation that continue to mask the cornerstone of our faith.
No previous knowledge is required to join the class, and you are welcome to attend whichever sessions you like.
SAME TEXT DIFFERENT MEANING: CHRISTIAN AND JEWISH INTERPRETATIONS OF BIBLICAL TEXTS
FRIDAYS | AUGUST 28 • SEPTEMBER 4 2:00pm with Rabbi Joshua Franklin & the Very Reverend Denis C. Brunelle
Last year, Rabbi Josh Franklin and the Very Reverend Denis Brunelle (St. Lukes Episcopal Church) explored common ideas between Judaism and Christianity through disparate texts of their faith traditions. This summer, join them as they explore texts that their faith traditions hold in common, yet are interpreted differently. Come learn about new faith perspectives on some of the most important common scripture between Judaism and Christianity.

12
Due to the overwhelming need brought on by COVID-19, our local food pantries are almost empty. It is always the right time to help others, now more than ever.
As we pause for reflection and thanksgiving during our time at home, we must remember those in our community who suffer from food insecurity. Hunger is real, even in the Hamptons.
If you are going out to shop for yourself, we ask that you consider picking up one or two items for donation. If you are not venturing out, please do not do so even to fulfill this mitzvah.
If you are coming to the JCOH to pick up a Siddur, tallis, kippah or yahrzeit candle, we ask that you leave canned items, toiletries, or jarred baby food, which will help meet real needs. There will be a collection bin on our front porch, should you wish to make a donation.
Help to answer the call to feed the hungry during this time.

INSCRIBE A STONE
We have refurbished the Donald and Barbara Zucker Patio, with stones designed in the shape of the Star of David. These stones can be engraved in honor of a special person or moment in our lives, or in memory of a loved one.
Help us raise needed funds to support our yearly operating budget. This project will be ongoing for years to come, allowing future generations the opportunity to participate.
Contact our Administrator, Matthew Oates, for details at 631-324-9858 or by e-mail at [email protected].
WAYS TO GIVE
When those whom we hold close to us die, we yearn to find a way to consecrate and honor their memory. As we sit in our beautiful landmark sanctuary, we are warmed by its loveliness, soulfulness and openness to the world of the spirit and the physical world around us. We feel ever closer to God.
You can enshrine the memory of your loved ones by inscribing their name(s) on a pew plaque in the sanctuary. In that sacred space you will connect to the bonds between them and the divine.
A Pew Plaque in our Main Sanctuary may be purchased for $5,000.
Honoring the memory of our loved ones who have passed beyond the threshold of life offers us an opportunity to pay homage to those who made the world a better place because they lived in it. It is a time to strengthen the bonds between here and the hereafter in our hearts and minds.
A Memorial Plaque in our small sanctuary may be purchased for $1,000.
