Precision Cutting Tips, Tricks & Techniques:

 Always tightly clamp your samples

Use double saddle chuck for long parts, such as rods

 DO NOT hand dress!

Encapsulate spheres, unusual shapes, friable materials

 Use appropriate flange size

Soft materials can build up during cut and can cause bladebreakage, do not cut such materials unattended. For extremelygummy materials dress during cut.

 Wash machine out frequently!

See your operating manual or www.buehler.com/isomet_parameters.htm for more information.

Dressing of PetroThin® blades is best done by attaching a portion of the dressing stick (15-6190) to a glass slide and sectioning thedressing stick as if it were a sample. Attaching the dressing stick to the slide can be done quickly using Crystalbond wax. Because of thevacuum chuck positioning relative to the blade there is no need to attach a portion of the stick thicker than about 4√” . This thickness issufficient to make two passes through the stick. New blades should be dressed with two passes through the 1” x 1” cross-section ofthis stick slowly, taking a few minutes for each pass. Subsequent dressing will typically require only one pass through the stick.

Compression Mounting

Tips,Tricks & Techniques:

For best performance of your mounting press and media:

Do not use to mount soft, low melting point alloys, wood, plastic or very friable materials. Castable mounting media willprovide better results.

Use Release Agent 20-8185-002 to coat mold for easy removal

To permanently label specimens when using opaque mountmedia, fill most of the mold cylinder with mount media beforeadding a thin layer of TransOptic™media. Place a typed labelover the TransOptic™ powder, then cover it with a second layerof TransOptic™ powder. When cured, this preserves the label ina clear layer of media for easy sample identification.

To eliminate ‘cotton balls’ in TransOptic™mounts, increase cooltime and/or reduce molding temperature for improved mountclarity.

Reheating TransOptic™mounts to 110 °C for 15 – 30 minuteswill allow for the removal of the sample.Wearing heat-resistantgloves, apply pressure to the media near the sample withpliers. This should flex the mount and should break away fromthe sample with increasing pressure.

Mounting samples off-center for EBSD evaluation facilitatesbeam positioning.

Troubleshooting:

Mount media that appears frosted or unfused from themounting press is often a sign of insufficient moldingtemperatures. Check to ensure the temperature setting onthe mounting press is 150 °C or higher and that the heatingelement is tightened on the mold cylinder. For the SimpliMet®1000 and 3000 Mounting Presses, this is done be turningthe cylinder locking screw counter-clockwise until the screwis loose.

Uncured mounts can be caused by too much moisture inthe media. Ensure that containers are properly closedbetween uses.

Ensure that enough mounting media is placed into mold tosufficiently cover the sample. If not enough mount media isused, the mounting media may not be compressed enough tocure properly and could cause damage to the mold cylindersand ram assembly.

Radial splitting of cured mounts is often caused by sampleswith sharp corners or those that are too large fro the mold size.Reducing sample size and/or grinding off sharp corners isrecommended.

Excessive shrinkage is related to the thermal expansioncoefficient of the media and can be minimized by fully coolingspecimens under pressure in the mounting press. To minimizeshrinkage, the specimen should be cooled to roomtemperature before removal from the mounting press.

Mix Quantities: Use this quick guide to estimate how much resin and hardener is needed to fillSamplKups® of the following sizes.

Castable Accessories:

Release Agent – Used for coating the mounting cup for easy release. Use every time with EPDM mounting cups. See pg 20 for alist of part numbers.

SamplKlip®, SamplKlip® 1, Specimen Support Clips, UniClips®– Good for supporting sample orientation in the mounting cup.See pg 20 for a list of part numbers.

Reusable EPDM Mounting Cups -Can use with any Castable orCompression Mounting System. See page 19 for a list of part numbers.

Conductive Filler - If you need conductive castable mounts forSEM, EDS, and WDS, use Conductive Filler. See page 22 for a list ofpart numbers.

What you should know:

Do not use disposable plastic castable mounting cups withhigh exotherm systems.

Do not use Conductive Filler with EpoHeat® because of the lowviscosity; the filler will sink to the bottom so the entire mountwill NOT be conductive. Best to sputter coat the sample if itneeds to be conductive. Conductive Filler works with any otherBuehler Epoxy or Acrylic system.

EpoHeat systems may crystallize, due to the chemical purity ofthe product, ranging from gelled to rock hard consistency inside the container. To relieve this condition, the entire container should be placed in an oven up to 50 °C (122 °F) for approximately two hours. If product is still crystallized after twohours, extend the time in the oven until the crystallization is relieved.

For best results using epoxy systems. Mix using accurate ratios

Mix thoroughly: using a 3 cup mixing technique, mixing ismore thorough

Post cure heating for 2 hours at 50° C (122 °F) can increasehardness

Preheating unmixed systems reduces viscosity and shortenscure time; every increase of 10° C (50 °F) reduces gel time by50%.

Mix 25-90mlof epoxy at a time; mixing more than 90mlat atime can cause overexotherming even when poured intosmaller mounts

Use EpoHeat for very large mounts in single pours

Clean up any spills or drips with paper towel and ethanol

 Wear gloves!!!

Prepare sample under a hood, if possible

Use Cast N Vac or Cast N Vac 1000

Better to use the EPDM molds, reduces leakage

Use release agent to coat mold for easy removal of sample

For a video demonstration on measuring and mixing go to www.buehler.com/epoheat.htm

Castable Mounting Accessories

SamplKlip Support Clip SamplKlip I SupportClip

Specimen SupportClips

UniClip Support Clip

Buehler SamplKlips®, Specimen Support Clips and UniClips® are intended for use in supporting specimens during mounting for metallographic preparation. The choice of clip will depend on the mounting method and specimen geometry. All of these products arecompatible with all Buehler castable media types (epoxy and acrylic). Specimen support clips are not recommended for compressionmounting. The SamplKlip® and SamplKlip® I are compatible with compression mounting, however the stainless steel SamplKlip® maydeform during the mounting process. The UniClip® is perhaps best suited to compression-mounting, though for this application the UniClip® must be oriented with the “legs” upward to prevent collapse during mounting.

The weight of the clips should be considered where light specimens may have the tendency to float in castable media. If this is a concern, the stainless steel SamplKlip® is the best choice. For metallic specimens that are to be etched after preparation, one of thepolymer clips (SamplKlip® I, Specimen Support Clip, or UniClip®) is best to prevent interference with etching due to a stainless steel clipin contact with the specimen.

Specimen thickness will influence choice of clip type as follows:

Clip Type Approximate Compatible Specimen Thickness

Spec Support Clip, UniClip® 0.0035” to 0.090” (0.9mm to 2.3mm)

SamplKlip®, SamplKlip® I (large and small) up to 0.200” (5mm)

Use the product dimensions listed below to ensure compatibility of these products with specimens.

Approximate Product Dimensions:

Product Catalog Number height (in) width (in) length (in) weight (g)

SamplKlip® 20-4000-100 0.250 0.550 0.350 0.575

SamplKlip® I 20-4100-100 0.250 0.475 0.300 0.230

SamplKlip® I 20-4100-100s 0.250 0.425 0.250 0.110

UniClip® 20-5100-100 0.400 0.360 0.500 0.290

All dimensions and weights are approximate and intended only to provide a relative comparison of these products. The width valuesare measurements of the clip at its widest point without a specimen. UniClip® height given above includes legs (h ~ 0.235” without).

Buehler’s Conductive Filler. If you need conductive castablemounts for SEM, EDS, or WDS work, then you need Buehler's Conductive Filler. Adding this nickel based filler to Buehler's epoxies or acrylics makes your mounts conductive.

Buehler's Castable Mount Pigments allow you to enhance thecontrast between your specimen and any of our epoxy or acrylicmounting compounds.

While these pigments color code and enhance contrast, they donot infiltrate pores and cannot be used as a substitute for EpoColor™.

Tips,Tricks & Techniques:

In selecting a grinding surface, choose the finest abrasive that will efficiently achieve planarity

To choose which type of grinding surfaces consider:

- CarbiMet® 2 if you process many types of materials.Use 1-2 minutes.

- Apex® DGD or DGD Color for very hard materials, fewer grinding steps, controlled material removal and less change over.If material or mount media is gummy, dress.

- FibrMet® or UltraPrep® Lapping Films for small fragile specimens, electronics and fiber optics

Polishing cloths typically last 20 cycles

Diamond suspensions contain enough lubricant that they do not require an extender

Diamond pastes should be used with MetaDi® Fluid or another extender

 Final polish

CarbiMet® & CarbiMet® 2 Belts, Rolls & Strips and ZirMet® Belts

Buehler MetSplice® Belts are recommended for general coarse and fine grinding applicationswhere a uniform surface finish is required. The specially designed biased-butt splice eliminates thetypical belt bump found in conventional belts. This design results in a true running belt which delivers flat uniformly ground specimens.

Buehler CarbiMet® 2 Rolls and Strips are for use on HandiMet® 2 and HandiMet® I manual polishers.

UltraPrep™ Diamond Lapping Films

UltraPrep™ Diamond Lapping Film Products are formulated for fine grinding of hard materials such as ceramic and glass ferrules. Diamond particles are resin bonded to a uniform and durable 3 mil polyester backing. Their consistency, fine size distribution, and super-abrasive characteristics make UltraPrep Diamond Lapping Films the best choice for grinding ceramic ferrules. Buehler offers UltraPrep Type A and UltraPrep Type B Diamond Lapping Films in both pressure-sensitives adhesive(PSA) and plain backed versions. (Dependant on specific diameter).

UltraPrep™ Diamond Lapping Film, Type B (Interrupted)• A more aggressive, longer-life film in which the diamond particles are spaced to allow improved fluid

flow and abrasive action

• Polishing swarf flows between these particles, allowing the polishing process to continue unaffected

• Ideal for use on composite materials, non-ferrous materials, and materials where embedding of abra-sive particles is a concern

MetaDi®Diamond Polishing Compounds are the standard of theindustry for critical sample preparation processes. The unique formulation of MetaDi® compounds makes them the best for use inmetallographic, petrographic, and ceramographic polishing applications. MetaDi® diamond compounds are a premium productthat utilize natural (in MetaDi® Paste formula) and synthetic (inMetaDi® Suspension and MetaDi® II Paste formula) diamond gradedfor particle size as well as shape. The diamond carrier is formulated to keep the diamond from loading up and to maintain its cutting efficiency through the life of the polishing surface. Water based suspensions are recommended for most applications. Oil based suspensions are recommended only for materials that are water sensitive or where more lubrication is necessary.

The continuing quest for increased product quality and reliability requires a more thorough testing of materials, which includesmicrostructural analysis. In addition, the analysis of increasingly complex composites and advanced materials is challenging theadequacy of existing methods for specimen preparation. These two factors have created a demand for improved preparation andanalysis techniques. Besides offering equipment and consumables for this purpose, Buehler offers training courses for individuals toobtain or improve the neccessary metallographic skills.

Buehler established the Institute for Microstructural Analysis in 1989, offering both general courses at an introductory level plus morespecialized courses that focus on the needs of specific industries or technologies. All courses stress supervised hands-on activities inthe laboratory with classroom instruction to help the students understand the basic principles. Courses are offered at the Buehlerheadquarters in Lake Bluff, Illinois, as well as Buehler’s office in Irvine, California or a nearby location.

CALCE (Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering - University of Maryland) / BuehlerFailure Analysis of Electronic Components

CALCE / BUEHLER FAILUREANALYSIS OF ELECTRONICCOMPONENTSFailure analysis is an important tool in theeffort to ensure reliability of electronicproducts and systems throughout theirproduct lifecycle. Significantimprovements in the reliability ofelectronics can be achieved by retrievingproducts and examining them todetermine the root cause of any failuresand the extent of degradation which hasoccurred over time. Root cause failureanalysis employs a sequence ofnon-destructive and destructiveanalytical techniques to characterize themodes by which failure is manifested, thesites where failure is localized, thefundamental mechanical, electrical, chemical and electrochemicalmechanisms by which failure hasoccurred, and the factors whichprecipitated the activation of thosemechanisms.

Unfortunately, failure analysis is oftenperformed incorrectly or incompletely, leading to a poor understanding of failuremechanisms and causes, and loss ofmoney, customers, and possibly lives dueto recurrence of failures. The first half ofthe short course will present amethodology for identifying potentialfailure mechanisms in electroniccomponents based on the failure history.Systematic approaches to root causeanalysis will be provided. Failure analysistechniques geared towards various failuremechanisms will be discussed, with anemphasis on cross-sectioning techniquesand analysis.

Cross-sectional analysis is a valuable toolfor failure analysis of electronic devicesalong with quality evaluation, researchand process monitoring. Successful use ofthis technique is often complicated by thehighly dissimilar properties of thecomponent materials under investigationand their susceptibility to damage.Emphasis will be placed on how to dealwith these differences through anunderstanding of the componentmaterials to be prepared and the basicprinciples of abrasive grinding andpolishing.Techniques for low-damagesectioning and the procedures required toprevent preparation induced damage arediscussed.

The second half of this short courseprovides guidance on how to choosepreparation sequences depending on thematerials, the configuration of thespecimens and the ultimate purpose ofthe investigation. The short course stressesthe need to understand the basicprinciples rather than simply following'“recipes".The goal of specimenpreparation is to produce a damage-freesurface that can be imaged and analyzedthrough the use of microscopy. Methodsfor capturing images and quantifyingfeatures through the use of image analysiswill be discussed and demonstrated.Thiscourse is recommended for persons whowish to conduct failure analysis onelectronic products such as PWBs, wafers, solid state devices and components.

This course will be taught jointly by Centerfor Advanced Life Cycle Engineering(CALCE) and Buehler.
