Sectioning Technical Information

Specimen preparation for material examination involves an intricate series of operations, each depending upon the preceding.Theimportance of the first cut cannot be overstated, as all subsequent steps can be seriously affected if done improperly. Cutting mustleave the material properties undisturbed and avoid heat deformation at the cut surface. It must also provide a clean cut, withoutburring, and with a minimal amount of frictional heating.

The most commonly used sectioning device in the metallographic laboratory is the abrasive cut-off machine. All abrasive-wheelsectioning should be performed wet. An ample flow of coolant, with an additive for corrosion protection and lubrication, should bedirected into the cut.Wet cutting will produce a smoother surface finish and,most importantly, will guard against excessive surfacedamage caused by overheating.

Abrasive Cut-Off Machines

SamplMet® 2 Abrasive Cutter is designed to cut smaller parts and components, includingfasteners, efficiently and economically.This compact bench-top cutter will section up to 12“(38mm) diameter stock using a 9“ (229mm) abrasive cut-off wheel. The enclosed cuttingcompartment is equipped with a left-hand cam activated vise which is mounted to a ruggedalloy base casting. A corrosion-proof glass reinforced plastic hood minimizes noise duringoperation.The design of the SamplMet 2 provides optimum accessibility to the cuttingchamber for easy clean up and quick wheel changing. A counter-balanced, pivoting motorallows the cutting blade to be easily lowered into and out of the sample. An electrical interlock,coupled to the protective hood, disconnects power when the hood is raised. Designed with a1 Hp (750W) motor, 3450 no-load rpm, clean-out hose and sealed side ports for long piecesectioning.The included recirculating system features a 7 gallon (27l) tank with flow controlvalve. Includes three samples of various cut-off wheels, recirculating system, 33.8oz (1l)CoolMet® 2 Fluid, two coolant hoses and one left hand standard vise.

The AbrasiMatic® 300 Abrasive Cutter is a manual and automatic bench top cutter.There are4 options of sectioning methods.They allow choice of manual sectioning either in an up-down(Z-axis) chop direction, X-axis serial section direction,Y-axis longitudinal direction, or automaticY-axis sectioning. Features include a 12“ (305mm) cut-off wheel capacity, 5 Hp (3.7kW) motorwith brake, direct or pulse cutting action, drip resistant hood and color touch-screen controlswith e-stop. The Delta® AbrasiMet® Abrasive Cutter is a manually operated bench top cutter used for awide variety of materials and laboratory applications. It provides the operator the ability tomanually control the cutting operation, producing burn free cuts quickly and consistently. Itfeatures a 4 Hp (3.0 kW) motor, operating at 3400 no-load rpm at 60 Hz and 2800 rpm at 50 Hz,a low voltage (24-volt) control circuit and a 10“ (254mm) blade capacity. It features a counterbalanced controlled pivot cutting action, totally enclosed in a molded glass reinforced plastichood, hood lock and a 3.75“ (95mm) diameter cutting capacity with stainless steel T-slot tablebed.The coolant system (sold separately) includes a Hp (75W) pump and a 7-gallon (27l)tank with a flow control valve and a drain hose. A 4-piece assortment of blades is included.

The 10-2145 series has an industry approved hood switch activated when the hood is lifted,stopping all cutting wheel rotation. The 10-2155 series combines an industry approved hoodlock and mechanical brake to immediately stop the blade rotation and is CE marked.

Mounting Technical Information

The primary purpose of mounting metallographic specimens is for convenience in handling specimens of difficult shapes or sizesduring the subsequent steps of metallographic preparation and examination. A secondary purpose is to protect and preserve extremeedges or surface defects during metallographic preparation.The method of mounting should in no way be injurious to themicrostructure of the specimen. Pressure and heat are the most likely sources of injurious effects.

The most common mounting method uses pressure and heat to encapsulate the specimen with a thermosetting or thermoplasticmounting material. Common thermosetting resins include phenolic (PhenoCure® resin), Diallyl Phthalate and epoxy (EpoMet® resin)while methyl methacrylate (TransOptic® resin) is the most commonly used thermoplastic mounting resin.

Castable mounting materials may require neither pressure nor external heat and are recommended for mounting specimens that aresensitive to heat and/or pressure. Acrylic resins, such as VariDur® and SamplKwick® resins, are the most widely used castable resins dueto their low cost and short curing time. However, shrinkage can be a problem with acrylics.

Grinding/Polishing Technical Information

Grinding is defined as abrasive material removal from the specimen surface using randomly oriented or fixed abrasives on a substratesuch as paper or cloth. Grinding starts with the finest grit size that will establish an initially flat surface and remove the effects ofsectioning within a few minutes.The abrasive used for each succeeding grinding operation should be one or two grit sizes smallerthan that used in the preceding step. All grinding steps should be performed wet provided that water has no adverse effects on anyconstituents of the microstructure.Wet grinding minimizes specimen heating, and prevents the abrasive from becoming loaded withmaterial removed from the specimen being prepared. Each grinding step,while producing damage itself,must remove the damagefrom the previous step.The depth of damage decreases with the abrasive size but so does the material removal rate.

Polishing is the final step, or steps, in producing a deformation-free surface that is flat, scratch free, and mirror-like in appearance.Such a surface is necessary to observe the true microstructure for subsequent metallographic interpretation, both qualitative andquantitative.

Petrographic/Geological Technical Information & Equipment

If preparing rocks and minerals as thin sections for transmitted light or polished sections for reflected mode microscopy, Buehler offersan entire line of products that prepare specimens for complete analysis.

Sectioning is very important, and is why Buehler offers several options from the Lapro® Saw used on large samples to trim saws forthe sectioning of chips. Our equipment prepares brittle materials that are prone to pitting, cracking of particles, pullout, pitting, andpoor edge retention and relief during preparation. It all starts with proper mounting techniques and the appropriate consumables.

Once a specimen is properly mounted it can be sectioned and ground using the PetroThin® for thin sections. For final preparation ofthin sections or bulk mounts the EcoMet®/AutoMet® grinder-polisher will prepare specimens to the ultimate surface finish.

6“ Buehler Trim Saw will manually cut specimens up to 1.2“ (30mm) in height. It utilizes a 10“(254mm) x 11“ (279mm) self aligning tabletop for a simple removal of the reservoir tank tooptimize effortless blade changes, coolant filling and tank cleaning.This 6“ Buehler Trim Sawsaw is complete with a 3 Hp thermal protected 1725 rpm motor and 6“ (152mm) DiamondBlade. Optional vise available.

10“ Buehler Power Feed Trim Saw utilizes a 3 Hp motor and a clutch activated automatic feedsystem. Its vise can hold up to a 4“ (102mm) specimen and becomes a handheld devicefor manual trimming or can be moved out of the way. A rate for the automatic feed isapproximately 2“ (13mm) per minute. Stereomicroscopes are used for three dimensional imaging where the perception of depth and contrast is critical to the interpretationof specimen structure.The wide field of view and variable magnification of stereomicroscopes lend them for the study of largespecimens particularly industrial assembly and parts inspection applications.They can be used to examine specimens under bothreflected (episcopic) and transmitted (diascopic) light. Often transmitted and reflected light sources are combined to take advantageof particular specimen features to best reveal its characteristics.The main techniques for the stereoscopic illumination of specimensare oblique, darkfield, and fluorescence illumination.

Industrial Microscopes utilize reflected light to illuminate a specimen on a movable stage perpendicular to the optical axis.Industrial scopes come in upright and inverted configurations and are commonly used in conjunction with image analysis systems.As opposed to the standard configuration of an upright microscope in which the ocular and objective are located above the specimenstage, the lenses of an inverted microscope are located below a transparent viewing stage, with the light source illuminating thesubject from above.The specimen is located face down above the objective with the line of sight directed upward through theobjective to the object. Locating the lenses below the stage allows users to examine larger or odd shaped samples.

Brightfield, darkfield, polarized light, and Differential interference Contrast (DIC) are the most common viewing techniques used withindustrial microscopes. Industrial applications for materials science and engineering laboratories include the three-dimensionalanalysis of metals and semiconductor materials, checks for surface defects, grain size and incursions in QA/QC, and the analysis ofsurface microstructures in a variety of sample types in material science and metallography.

When adding imaging capabilities to the laboratory, it is important to consider your goals. Oftentimes, images are just another step inthe documentation process. For example, in a failure investigation it is useful to capture the image of a complete component beforethe sectioning process. In quality control, an image of the microstructure might be attached to a report as an indication of a pass/failcondition. Additional functionality of an imaging system might include a scale marker overlay and point-to-point or other operatorinteractive measurements. Fully automated image analysis includes detection of the features of interest based on grey level or colordifferences as well as morphological characteristics such as size and shape. Automated imaging applications are based on afundamental series of steps shown in the table below.Depending on your goals, some or all of these steps may be utilized.

OmniMet® MHT Fully Automated Microindentation Hardness Systems

Hardness testing is performed to measure a materials’ resistance to penetration as a predictor of strength,machinability, ductility andwear resistance. An indenter of a specific size and shape is impressed,with a known force, into the surface of a material. Hardnessvalues are determined by measuring the physical dimensions of the indentation relative to the applied force. Hardness tests aretypically classified by the extent of the test force. “Macro” tests refer to test where a force greater than 1KG was applied while “Micro”tests refer to tests where the load force is less than 1KG. Tests below 0.1g are referred to as ultralight or nanoindentation tests.“Macro” testers employ the Vickers, Rockwell, or Brinell methods. “Micro” testers employ either the Knoop or Vickers methods. Dueto the low loads involved in “Micro” tests,many factors (see table below) can affect the quality of the test results.

The 88-7000 OmniMet® MHT Fully Automated Microindentation System consists of the OmniMet® MHT Fully AutomatedSoftware Version, an OmniMet® workstation with choice of accessory motorized stage, an accessory MicroMet® 5104 Hardness Testerand accessory sample vise.This system is fully automatic, easy to start and walk away, has sample mapping, is LAN capable withautomated focusing, turret rotation, indent measurement and traversing in X and Y axes.

CALCE / BUEHLER FAILUREANALYSIS OF ELECTRONICCOMPONENTSFailure analysis is an important tool in theeffort to ensure reliability of electronicproducts and systems throughout theirproduct lifecycle. Significantimprovements in the reliability ofelectronics can be achieved by retrievingproducts and examining them todetermine the root cause of any failuresand the extent of degradation which hasoccurred over time. Root cause failureanalysis employs a sequence ofnon-destructive and destructiveanalytical techniques to characterize themodes by which failure is manifested, thesites where failure is localized, thefundamental mechanical, electrical,chemical and electrochemicalmechanisms by which failure hasoccurred, and the factors whichprecipitated the activation of thosemechanisms.

Unfortunately, failure analysis is oftenperformed incorrectly or incompletely,leading to a poor understanding of failuremechanisms and causes, and loss ofmoney, customers, and possibly lives dueto recurrence of failures.The first half ofthe short course will present amethodology for identifying potentialfailure mechanisms in electroniccomponents based on the failure history.Systematic approaches to root causeanalysis will be provided. Failure analysistechniques geared towards various failuremechanisms will be discussed, with anemphasis on cross-sectioning techniquesand analysis.

Cross-sectional analysis is a valuable toolfor failure analysis of electronic devicesalong with quality evaluation, researchand process monitoring. Successful use ofthis technique is often complicated by thehighly dissimilar properties of thecomponent materials under investigationand their susceptibility to damage.Emphasis will be placed on how to dealwith these differences through anunderstanding of the componentmaterials to be prepared and the basicprinciples of abrasive grinding andpolishing.Techniques for low-damagesectioning and the procedures required toprevent preparation induced damage arediscussed.

The second half of this short courseprovides guidance on how to choosepreparation sequences depending on thematerials, the configuration of thespecimens and the ultimate purpose ofthe investigation.The short course stressesthe need to understand the basicprinciples rather than simply following'“recipes".The goal of specimenpreparation is to produce a damage-freesurface that can be imaged and analyzedthrough the use of microscopy. Methodsfor capturing images and quantifyingfeatures through the use of image analysiswill be discussed and demonstrated.Thiscourse is recommended for persons whowish to conduct failure analysis onelectronic products such as PWBs, wafers,solid state devices and components.
