Taras Hryhorovich Shevchenko

Taras Hryhorovich Shevchenko, the great Ukrainian poet, artist and thinker, was born on March 9, 1814, in the village of Moryntsi in central Ukraine, then part of

the Russian Empire. His parents, H. Shevchenko and K. Shevchenko, were

serfs on the land of V. Engelhardt.

Taras Hryhorovich Shevchenko

Taras Shevchenko is a great Ukrainian poet.

He is the founder of the modern Ukrainian literary language.

Shevchenko was born in the family of a serf in the village of Moryntsy in 1814.

Young Taras became an orphan very early.

He was a shepherd, a labourer to a priest and, when he was fourteen, his master took him into the manor house as a boy-servant — “kozachok”.

Page 18: 200th anniversary Taras Shevchenko's birthday school 75

In 1829 Shevchenko’s master moved to Vilno and then — to St Petersburg.

He took his boy-servant with him, too.

Still in his early childhood Shevchenko was very fond of drawing and his master decided to make a serf painter of him.

For this purpose he sent Taras to study painting.

The boy was so talented that several Russian artists decided to free him from slavery.

Karl Brulov, the great Russian artist, painted a portrait of Vasiliy Zhukovsky and sold it for 2 500 roubles.

With this money they bought out Shevchenko from his master.

Later on the young painter continued his studies at the Petersburg Academy of Arts.

Karl Brulov influenced Shevchenko greatly.

Soon they became close friends.

In 1838 Shevchenko wrote his first poems in Ukrainian.

In 1840 he published his first book of poems which he named “Kobzar”.

His first poetical works are mainly examples of romanticism.

Page 20: 200th anniversary Taras Shevchenko's birthday school 75

Taras Hryhorovich Shevchenko

The subject of many poems was un-happy love.

He also wrote several poems about historical past of Ukraine.

In these works he glorified the heroic struggle of the Ukrainian people against their oppressors and their fight for national liberation (the long poem “Gaidamaky”).

In 1843 Shevchenko returned to Ukraine.

He travelled a lot about the country and learned to know the heavy life of the Ukrainian serfs.

In 1846 Shevchenko joined a revolutionary organisation — Kiril and Mephodiy Society, which aimed to liberate the serfs.

Page 21: 200th anniversary Taras Shevchenko's birthday school 75

Taras Hryhorovich Shevchenko

He wrote several revolutionary poems directed against the tsarist despotism (“Dream”, 1844, “The Caucasus”, 1845, and his famous “Testament”).

In 1847 he was arrested and exiled as a soldier to Orsk fortress in Kazakhstan.

Here, being a soldier, he wrote several novels in Russian.

He also painted several of his best pictures.

In 1857 Shevchenko returned from the exile to St Petersburg.

Here he published several of his masterpieces in which he criticised the tsarist regime and demanded liberty for serfs.

Page 22: 200th anniversary Taras Shevchenko's birthday school 75

In St Petersburg he made close friends with well-known Russian writers — N. Chernyshevskyi, N. Dobrolubov, N. Nekrasov and others.

In 1859, when Shevchenko went to Ukraine, he was arrested and forced to return to St Petersburg — the tsarist government was afraid of the elderly poet.

Page 23: 200th anniversary Taras Shevchenko's birthday school 75

On the 10th of March, Shevchenko died.

His death was a great loss for Ukrainian literature and liberation movement — A. Gertsen published a big article on Shevchenko’s death in his magazine “Kolokol” in London.

Shevchenko is the favourite author of millions of Ukrainians, a real people’s poet.

His works are translated into many languages.

Taras Hryhorovich Shevchenko“He was a peasant's son and has become a prince in the realm of spirits. He was a serf, and has become a Great Power in the

common- wealth of human culture. He was an unschooled layman, and has shown to professors and scholars newer and freer paths. He sighed for ten years under the Russian soldiery, and has done more for the freedom of Russia than ten victorious

armies. Fate pursued him cruelly throughout life, yet could not turn the pure gold of his soul to rust, his love of humanity to

hatred, or his trust in God to despair. Fate spared him no suffering, but did not stint with

pleasures, which welled up from a healthy spring of life. And it withheld till after death its best and costliest prize— undying fame and the ever new delight which his works call forth in millions of human hearts”. IVAN FRANKO, 12 May, 1914

Shevchenko’s ArtThe great poet, ardent patriot, thinker and

humanist, Shevchenko, is at one and the same time an outstanding master of Ukrainian painting and graphic art, the founder of critical realism and the folk element in Ukrainian fine arts.

The creative work of Shevchenko, which was closely tied with the reality of that period and was based on the national-liberation movement, was basically connected with and directed into the future. It is an important stage in the development of realism and the folk element in art. Ukrainian artists refer to the artistic heritage of Shevchenko as one of the greatest and most valuable national traditions.

About Shevchenko LibraryThe Shevchenko Museum has a fascinating collection of paintings, etchings, illustrations, posters and colorful artifacts of Ukrainian and Ukrainian Canadian cultural life. Perhaps the single most valuable item on exhibit in the Museum is the death mask of Shevchenko made on March 10, 1861 in St. Petersburg which survived a fire that destroyed the original Shevchenko Museum in the Shevchenko Memorial Park, North Oakville, Ontario.

But this Shevchenko Museum also possesses a hidden treasure of considerable value. This is a special collection of about 1,200 books and pamphlets of Shevchenkiana which is a remarkable research resource in my estimation as a professional librarian. These books provide much material on the life and works of Shevchenko. One surprising fact is that in the Shevchenko Research Collection of the Museum there are some 120 different editions of the Kobzar, Shevchenko's collected poetical and sometimes prose works.

Shevchenko's first Kobzar, consisting of eight poems, was published in 1840 in St. Petersburg. Although our collection does not have the first edition, it does have excellent facsimile copies.
