Our theme is Exchanges, be they musical, cultural or ideological. In some concerts the exchange between composers follows the traditional
route - Beethoven influencing the music of Brahms or Golijov’s tribute to Piazzolla. In other concerts we’re performing works such as Handel’s
Belshazzar and Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde which are inspiring us to follow totally fresh paths via our learning and participation work. For
more information on our Writing on the Wall project and season-long Songbook of the Earth project read on! We’re passionate about the
transforming role of a chamber orchestra in today’s society and invite you to get in touch and find out more about this exciting season.
Camerata is always looking for new opportunities to increase access to a variety of art forms. In an unusual cultural exchange, this brochure
contains fantastic original designs by young urban graffiti artist, Sophie Backhouse. Sophie’s inspiration came from listening to the
music you'll be hearing throughout the season, and forms a direct artistic link to our Writing on the Wall project.
We’re keeping some treats up our sleeves; listen out for a short surprise piece in every concert, inspired by the season theme. And
following the success of our Manchester Composers’ Project, we will be holding another workshop in February where three new
pieces will be selected for performance in the final concerts of our season. See p9 for more details. The Composers’ Project and
Handel’s Belshazzar are just two of the many fascinating exchanges taking place this season between Camerata and RNCM
colleagues and students.
This season promises some memorable evenings. Come and join us as we make live recordings of two more Beethoven Symphonies
as part of our ongoing cycle, and hear world class musicians such as Jonathan Biss, Robin Blaze, Jane Irwin and Kathryn Stott
performing with us. This season we’re also looking ahead – keep an eye out for new faces on the conductor’s podium and in the
leader’s chair as we start our search for two outstanding individuals who will take us onwards and upwards, whilst still
embracing the unique Camerata spirit.
A warm welcome awaits you at all our events this season – we look forward to seeing you soon.

SONGBOOK OF THE EARTH
Inspired by Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, Manchester Camerata and The
Bridgewater Hall Community Education Trust are developing a project for schools
across the Northwest to create a new ‘Songbook of the Earth’ based on responses
to the environment. ‘Songbook' is part of a year-long programme of learning work
spanning Chester, The Wirral and Greater Manchester, delivered in collaboration
with Chester Festivals and supported by the Bank of America Charitable
Foundation. In a Camerata first, schools can participate in the Songbook project
online, accessing resources and practical support to create their own songs.

LEARNING & PARTICIPATIONLEARNING AND PARTICIPATION IS CENTRAL TO OUR WORKAND RUNS HAND IN HAND WITH OUR CONCERT SEASON.
Inspired by pieces within the programme our projects are all about exchanging ideas.
Musicians, young people, teachers and artists from other disciplines draw ideas
together into work which has its strength in creative exploration.
Our recent Floating Worlds project in partnership with Royal Exchange Theatre
education worked with young people aged 10 – 13 with High Functioning Autism
and Asperger’s Syndrome. Inspired by the Japanese Ainu creation story of a many-
layered world, the young people reacted to the story and shared ideas to create a
musical drama of their own about finding a friend and belonging in the world.
This is just one example of how our talented musicians work creatively to unlock
potential. If you would like to get involved with our Learning and Participation work,
please contact Charlotte Spencer, Head of Learning and Participation on
0161 226 8696 or email [email protected]

Camerata has played. Participants will receive expert coaching from Camerata
musicians and the main goal is to have fun, make friends whilst also developing
orchestral technique and sound quality.

BROCHURE DESIGN AND ARTWORK
The young artist we have been working with, Sophie Backhouse of Nonconform
has created all the artwork in this brochure as a response to listening to the music
the orchestra will be playing, much like Picasso being inspired by Stravinsky’s music
to create the sets for Pulcinella. Using words such as ‘transform’, ‘create’ and
‘atmosphere’ as a starting point, the images reflect the season theme of exchanges
and her reactions to the music.
Design and Original Artwork: Nonconform Ltd.
Photography: Jonathan Keenan.
