IntroductionThis manual provides practical guidance on

driving and caring for your Saab.The Saab 9-3 is available with a 2.0lturbo-engine, 185 hp or 205 hp or a 2.3lturbo-engine, 230 hp.

Although the manual describes the mostimportant differences between model vari-ants, it does not include precise specifica-

tions of the different variants. Some differ-ences also occur to meet special legalrequirements in different countries.

Importation and distribution of Saab auto-mobiles, spare parts and accessories arehandled exclusively by General Motors ofCanada Limited in Canada and by SaabCars USA, Inc. in the U.S.A.

We recommend that you read through themanual before taking the car out for the first

time and that you keep it in the car for futurereference.

To find a specific item, use the overviewsgiven on pages 3-6. A list of contents isgiven at the beginning of each section of themanual, and there is also a comprehensiveindex at the back of the book.

An unsecured load could cause passengerinjuries in braking situations or in the event of acollision.

Jack

The jack is designed solely for use in changing a wheelor fitting snow chains.

The car must be standing level and the jack must bepositioned on a firm, level surface.

Never crawl under the car while it is raised on the jack.

USE

1 Apply the parking brake and engage first or reversegear; if the car has automatic transmission, select P.

2 Fit the jack at the jacking point nearest to the wheelthat is to be changed.

3 Wind up the jack until the car just begins to lift.

4 If there is a wheel cover, remove it by inserting ascrewdriver behind it and prying it off.

5 Loosen the wheel bolts by half a turn, using the toolin the toolkit.

6 Wind up the jack so that the wheel clears the ground.Unscrew all the wheel bolts and take the wheel off.

7 Fit the spare wheel and tighten the wheel boltsenough for the bolts and wheel to seat correctly.

8 Lower the car. Tighten the wheel bolts in thesequence shown by the figure.

Safety belts

Three-point inertia-reel safety belts are pro-vided for all seats.

Research has established that it is danger-ous for rear-seat passengers not to weartheir safety belts.

Safety-belt reminderWhen the ignition is switched on, the fastenbelts reminder will light up for 6 seconds oruntil the driver and any passengers are

wearing their belts. An audible alarm willalso sound for six seconds or until the driverhas fastened his belt.

WARNING

Safety belts must be worn at all timesbyall car occupants. Child safety, see page19.

Check that the tongue of the belt lockengages properly.

To reduce the risk of head injuries in theevent of a collision, the roof pillars andside edges of the headlining incorporatecushioning material (Convertible: wind-screen pillars and upper part of wind-screen rail). These areas must not bemodified in any way. Work on these areasmust only be carried out at an authorizedSaab dealer.

WARNING

In the event of an accident, the rear-seatpassengers can be thrown forwardagainst the front-seat backrests, impos-ing much higher stresses on the

front-seat passengers and belts andresulting in needless injury to everyone inthe car.

WARNING

For safety reasons, you should adjustsafety belts only while the car is station-ary.

Safety-belt pretensionersThe belts of the front seats are fitted withautomatic pretensioners, which are acti-

vated in the event of a severe frontal colli-sion or very violent rear-end collision. Theyserve to reduce the forward movement ofthe body by tensioning the belt.

The belt pretensioners do not activate inless violent frontal or rear-end collisions.

Correct position for safety belt

The lap part of the belt should be pulled

as tightly as comfortable and as low aspossible across the hips, so that it is justtouching the top of the thighs. The shoul-der belt should be well in on the shoulderbut not touching the neck.

Check to ensure that the belt is not twistedor rubbing against any sharp edges.

There should not be any slack in the belt.Pull the belt tight particularly importantwhen thick outer clothing is worn.

Refrain from tilting the backrest more thannecessary, as the safety belt providesbetter protection when the seat is in themore upright position.

Only one person per safety belt!

For most of the time a safety belt is worn,the retractor will allow the wearer freedomof movement. The retractor locks up auto-matically if the belt is jerked or withdrawn

sharply, the car tilts, the brakes areapplied hard or a collision occurs.

WARNING

If the car is involved in a collision, thesafety belts, belt pretensioners and othercomponents must be inspected by anauthorized Saab dealer and replaced asnecessary.

Never make any alterations or repairs tothe safety belt yourself but visit an author-ized Saab dealer.

WARNING

Proper positioning of the safety belt isextremely important. An out of positionsafety belt can result in the wearer slidingunderneath the belt in a collision (subma-rining) and injury can result from the lapportion cutting into the abdomen.

WARNING

If two people share a belt, they risk injuryby being crushed together in the event ofan accident.

Children who have grown out of a childseat should be restrained by the carsstandard three-point belts. Make sure that

the shoulder belt is not in contact with theneck or throat. If it is, a booster seat/cush-ion may be necessary.

Front seat belts

Fasten the belt by pulling the belt and insert-ing the tongue in the buckle. Check that it issecurely fastened.

Because the lower belt-anchorage pointsare on the seat (9-3 5-door), the belt bucklefollows the movement of the seat duringseat adjustment. In the 9-3 Coup and9-3 Convertible, the lower outer anchorage

point is in the rear of the sill, which makes itall the more important that the lap strap isnot slack during use.

Grasp the shoulder belt close to the buckleand pull the belt towards the shoulder totighten the lap belt part.

The belt must be as far in on the shoulder as

possible.

To release the belt, press the red button onthe belt buckle, as illustrated.

Neverfasten the safety belt with the

Belt guide

The belt guide on the door pillar can be setto five different heights.

Set the guide as high as possible withoutcausing the belt to chafe against the throat.In the case of a short person the guide canbe lowered until the belt comes about aninch (a few centimetres) from the throat butstill provides safe restraint.

Raise the belt guide by pushing it upwardsto the desired position. To lower it, therelease button must first be depressed.Check that it has engaged in its new positionby pulling up and down.

Safety belt use during pregnancy

Pregnant women must alwayswear asafety belt to protect both themselves andthe unborn child.

The lap belt should be placed low, acrossthe hips and over the upper thighs.

Three-point safety belts are provided for allthree rear-seat passengers (2 for Convert-ible model).

Fasten the belts by pulling the belt acrossyou and inserting the tongue into the buckle.Check that it is securely fastened.

WARNING

Make sure that the belt does notbecome trapped when the backrest isfolded down or raised (see page144).

If you must carry an item of luggage ona seat, ensure that it is held securely

by the safety belt. This will reduce therisk of injury by flying objects in theevent of an accident.

Protect the belt from sharp edges.

WARNING

Safety belts are designed to bear uponthe bony structure of the body, and shouldbe worn low across the front of the pelvisor the pelvis, chest and shoulders, asapplicable; wearing the lap section of thebelt across the abdominal area must beavoided.

Safety belts should be adjusted as firmlyas possible, consistent with comfort, toprovide the protection for which they havebeen designed. A loose belt will greatlyreduce the protection afforded to thewearer.

Care should be taken to avoid contamina-tion of the webbing with polishes, oils andchemicals, and particularly battery acid.Cleaning may safely be carried out usingmild soap and water. The belt should bereplaced if webbing becomes frayed,contaminated or damaged.

It is essential to replace the entire assem-bly after it has been worn in a severeimpact even if damage to the assembly isnot obvious.

Belts should not be worn with strapstwisted.

Each belt assembly must only be used byone occupant; it is dangerous to put a beltaround a child being carried on the occu-pants lap.

WARNING

No modifications or additions should bemade by the user which will either preventthe safety belt adjusting device from oper-ating to remove slack, or prevent thesafety belt assembly from being adjustedto remove slack.

Head restraintThe front seats in the Saab 9-3 are

equipped with Saab Active Head Restraints(SAHRs). These reduce the risk of whiplashinjury if the car is hit from behind.

In the event of a rear-end collision, the bodyis forced back against the backrest. This, inturn, causes the mechanism to press thehead restraint forward and upward, thus lim-iting the backward movement of the head.

The SAHR is a mechanical system, actu-ated by body weight. The mechanism is builtinto the top of the backrest, where it is con-nected to the head restraint.

The SAHR does not normally need to bereplaced after a rear-end collision.

The head restraint can be raised or loweredand is adjustable in various positions.

Raising: grasp the head restraint on bothsides and pull it straight up.

Lowering: depress the catch on theleft-hand side of the attaching point andpress the head restraint down.

WARNING

Adjust the head restraint so that the headis well supported and the center of thehead restraint is at ear height, thus reduc-ing the likelihood of neck injury in an acci-dent.

restrained, but restraints must be suitablefor the size of the child. Always follow thechild seat/booster cushion manufacturersinstructions when installing these devices inyour vehicle.

Make sure you are acquainted with thelegal requirements for seating childrenin the car.

Make sure that it is possible to fit a childrestraint in accordance with the manufac-turers child seat instructions.

When fitting child seats in cars you mustalways read the instructions supplied bythe manufacturer.

Lockable belt tongueIf fitting a child seat that is intended to besecured in position by the lap portion of the

safety belt, make use of the locking functionof the buckle.

Locking the lap portion of the belt lessensthe risk that the seat will work loose whilethe car is in motion.

The button for the locking function is locatedon the back of the buckle.

1 Position the child seat in the back of thecar.

2 To activate the locking function, movethe locking button on the tongue of thebelt to the position markedCHILD SEAT (item 1 in the figure) inorder to activate the locking function.

3 Secure the base of the child seat withthe lap portion of the safety belt in accor-dance with the installation instructionsaccompanying the child seat.

4 Grasp the shoulder part of the safety beltand pull it upwards to tighten the lap por-tion against the child seat.

5 Check for correct locking function bypulling on the lap portion of the belt. Thebelt must not unreel.

LATCH installationTo facilitate the proper fitting of new spe-cially-design child restraints, 9-3's except

Convertibles have rigid lower anchorages(ISOFIX) and top tether anchorages in thetwo outboard rear seating positions. Thereis an additional top tether anchorage for thecenter rear seating position.

LATCH is a U.S./Canadian governmentstandard for an uniform method of fittingchild restraints without using the standardsafety belts. Only certain child restraints areequipped to utilize these rigid lower anchor-ages behind where the seat cushion andseat back come together. LATCH childseats also utilize a top tether strap that isfound on some newer child seats that stillrequire installation with the standard safety

belts.There are two bars attached to the car bodyfor each specially designed LATCH childrestraint. A small circular label is located onthe seat back just above each attachmentbar to facilitate installing the child restraint.

1 Place the child restraint on one of thedesignated outboard rear seat cushions.

2 Press the child restraint rearward, lining

up the restraint attachment arms withthe labels.

3 Follow the child restraint instructions toconfirm that both restraint arms areproperly attached to the bars.

4 Attach the top tether strap to the in-caranchorage and tighten according to the

restraint instructions, see page23and24.

5 Pull the child restraint to make a secondcheck that restraint is securely attachedat both the lower anchorage bars andthe top tether strap.

For the top tether, only use the strap sup-plied with the child restraint.

Always follow the installation instructionssupplied with the child restraint.

The availability of LATCH child restraintsmay be limited.

Child restraints using rigid lower anchor-ages (ISOFIX) cannot be fitted where a inte-grated booster seat is installed.

Child restraints with a tether strap must beanchored according to law.

The belt anchorage beam is provided withthree top tether anchorages. Use the onethat is located just behind the child restraint

and attach the restraint as follows:1 Open the luggage compartment.

2 Unhook the rubber straps.

3 Lift the parcel shelf slightly and pull itclear of the guide pins in the front edgeof the shelf support.

4 Fold the anchorages up as illustrated.

5 Raise the headrest to provide access tothe anchor. The child restraint tethermust be routed under the headrest. Tomake it more comfortable for the child,the headrest may be removed.

6 Attach the tether to the anchorage thatis located just behind the child restraint.

7 Secure the lower part of the childrestraint by means of the seat belt asdescribed in the child restraint mountinginstruction.

8 Tighten the tether so that the back of thechild restraint is pressed hard againstthe backrest.

Fold the anchorages down when not in use.

Forward facing child restraint incenter rear positionWhen installing a forward facing childrestraint in the center rear position the childrestraint must be fitted using the standardsafety belt together with the top tetheranchorage.

Child tether anchorages, Convert-ible models

Child restraints with a tether strap must beanchored according to law.

The car is provided with two top tetheranchorages. Use the one that is right behindthe child restraint and attach the restraint as

follows:1 Lower the convertible top fully.

2 Switch off the ignition when the top stor-age covers are in their straight up posi-tion.

3 Place the child restraint in the rear seat.

4 Unlock the backrest and lower it about

8 in. (20 cm).5 Insert the child restraints upper tether

between the bottom of the headrest andthe top of the backrest.

6 Run the hook and the tether over thecross-member behind the headrest.

7 There are slits in the fabric where the top

bag is joined to the cross-member.Insert hook and strap through the slitopening.

8 Attach the tether to the anchorage. Thismight be easier if you insert your otherhand between the backrest and thecrossmember to help attach the tether.

9 Raise the backrest and lock in place.10 Tighten the tether so that the back of thechild restraint is pressed hard againstthe backrest. Also check that no buckleis positioned above the cross-member,as this could obstruct locking of the ton-neau cover.

11 Secure the lower part of the child

restraint by means of the seat belt as

described in the child restraint mountinginstructions.

Integrated booster seat(accessory)

Integrated booster seats are available aspart of the rear seat backrest.

This child restraint is designed for use bychildren who weigh between 33 and 80 lbs.(15 and 36 kg) and are between 38 and 54inches (970 and 1370 mm) in height.

A child sitting in an integrated booster seat

must use the cars regular lap and shoulderbelt. Regardless of the childs weight andage, proper contact between child and beltis vital. Always make certain that the seat isundamaged and is kept clean so that it willfunction properly.

This child restraint system conforms to allapplicable motor vehicle safety standards.

Folding out

1 Press in the latches and lift and removethe cars regular head restraint. Turn it180 and remount it. Make certain that itis locked securely in place.

2 Lift up the booster seats headrest.

3 Pull out the upper part of the openerstrap and lower the seat itself. Make cer-tain that it is locked in the lowered posi-tion.

Fasten the belt See that the child is seated as far back as

possible against the back support.

Adjust the booster seats head support sothat its center is at ear height.

To attach the belt, pull it out slowly andinsert the latch plate into the buckle. Makecertain the latch plate is properly engagedin the buckle.

The lap portion of the belt must be posi-tioned low on the pelvis, and the shoulderstrap must be as far in on the shoulder aspossible without chafing against thechilds neck or causing discomfort.

The belt must contact the body firmly toprovide the best protection. Pull up on theshoulder strap to tension the belt properly.

Make certain the belt moves freelybetween the retractor and the buckle.

a Pull the upper part of the release strapout and fold up the seat itself. Make sure

that it is locked firmly in its folded-upposition.

b Press the booster seats headrest all theway down.

ISOFIX child restraints cannot be fitted in acar with integrated booster seats.

WARNING

Use only the vehicles lap and shoul-der belt system when restraining thechild in the booster seat.

The seat must not be modified orchanged in any way.

The cars regular head restraint mustalways be turned 180 back to its orig-inal position after the integrated

Airbag (SupplementalRestraint System

"SRS")

The supplementary restraint system (SRS)comprises an airbag in the steering wheel,a front passenger airbag and side airbags inthe front seats.

The system supplements the protectionprovided by the safety belts to furtherenhance the safety of occupants.

If a fault is detected in the SRS, theAIR BAG warning light on the main instru-ment panel will come on (see pages62and32).

When the system is triggered by impact of afrontal collision, the airbags in the steering

wheel and passenger side of the dash boardare inflated, after which they deflate throughvents in the back of the bags.The entire process takes less than0.1 second literally, faster than the blink-ing of an eye.

These airbags are triggered only by moder-

ate to severe frontal or near-frontal colli-sions. They will not be activated by minorfront-end impacts, rear-end or side impacts,or by the car rolling over.

WARNING

To reduce risk of injury:

Alwayswear your safety belt.

Alwaysadjust your seat so that youare as far back as possible but stillable to reach the steering wheel andcontrols comfortably.

Children 12 and under or shorter than55 inches (140 cm) should alwaystravel in the rear as the vehicle is

equipped with an airbag on the pas-senger side.

WARNING

Even if the car is equipped with anSRS (airbag), safety belts must stillalwaysbe worn by all occupants.

Note that because an airbag inflatesand deflates extremely rapidly, it willnot provide protection against a

second impact occurring in the sameincident. Alwaysuse your safety belt.

Always sit with the whole of your backin contact with the backrest of the seat,and with your seat as far back as ispractical. This is to reduce the risk ofinjury from contact with the backrest of

the seat when the airbag inflates andalso because the airbag needs spacein which to inflate.

Never attach anything to the steeringwheel or passenger side of the instru-ment panel, as this could result ininjury if the airbag should inflate. The

same applies to anything you mighthave in your mouth, such as a pipe, forinstance.

Some components of the airbag willbe hot for a short time. In some circum-stances the airbag can cause burns orabrasions to the body when the airbag

inflates/deflates.

Never rest your hands or forearms onthe steering-wheel center padding.

If the AIR BAG warning light remainson after the car has been started orcomes on while you are driving, havethe car checked immediately by anauthorized Saab dealer. The warninglight could signify that the airbags maynot inflate in a crash, or they couldeven inflate without a crash.

Front passenger seat

The airbags are interconnected and have acommon warning light, AIR BAG. The pas-senger airbag module is housed in thefascia above the glove compartment and ismarked SRS AIR BAG.

Both airbags will be inflated in the event of amoderate to severe frontal, or near-frontalcollision, even if the passenger seat is unoc-

cupied.

Side airbag

WARNING

Neversecure a rear-facing child seat inthe right front seat of a car equipped witha passenger airbag. Inflation of the airbagin the event of an accident could seriouslyinjure or kill a child.

WARNING

Children 12 and under can be killed bythe airbag.

The back seat is the safest place forchildren.

Never allow a child to stand in front ofthe seat or to sit on the lap of a

front-seat passenger. Serious injury ordeath could result if the airbag isinflated in a collision.

The glove compartment must beclosed while travelling. An openglove-compartment door could causeleg injuries in the event of a collision.

Never place anything on the dash or infront of the seat as, in addition to beinga hazard to passengers, this couldinterfere with the function of the airbagin the event of an accident. The sameapplies to the mounting of accessorieson the dash.

Keep feet on the floor - never put feetup on the dash, on the seat or out ofthe window.

Do not carry anything in your lap.

WARNING

This car is equipped with side airbagsand no extra interior trim should be fit-ted. Failure to observe this warningcould result in the side airbags notinflating as intended and thus not pro-viding the intended protection either.

Never place any object in the area that

would be occupied by the inflated air-bag.

For optimum protection, sit upright inthe seat, with your safety belt correctlyfastened.

The sensors for the side airbags are

fitted in the front doors.

Side airbags are housed inside the back-rests of the front seats and are designed toprotect the driver and front passenger in the

event of a side impact.In a side impact, only the airbag on that sidewill be activated, and only then if certain pre-determined conditions are met such as theforce and angle of the impact, the speed ofthe car on impact, and at which point on thecars side the impact occurs.

The sensors, which are fitted in the front

doors, sense the rise in pressure caused bythe door panel being pressed in during animpact condition. The side airbag trigger willbe commanded based on the characteris-tics of this pressure rise.

We advise against doing any work onthe doors that could affect the mois-ture barrier in the door or the airbag

sensors. It is essential that the mois-ture barrier (thick plastic film) in thefront door is not damaged in any way.

Improvement of the anticorrosiontreatment of the doors should only becarried out by an authorized Saabdealer. Otherwise there is a risk that

the side impact sensor and the mois-ture barrier in the door could be dam-aged.

The side airbags will inflate only in theevent of a side impact; not in the eventof a front or rear-end collision or of thecars rolling over.

Wear and damage to the seat cover,or the seat seam, in the area of theside airbag must immediately berepaired by an authorized Saabdealer.

Do not modify the speaker installation

in the front doors or install speakersother than those specifically approvedby Saab.

AIR BAG warning light SRS servicingThe SRS must be inspected as part of thenormal service program but otherwise may

be regarded as maintenance-free.

Scrapping or working on airbag andbelt pretensioners

WARNING

If the airbag readiness light stays onafter you start your vehicle, it meansthe airbag system may not be workingproperly.

The airbags in your vehicle may notinflate in a crash, or they could even

inflate without a crash. To help avoid injury to yourself or

others, have your vehicle servicedright away if the airbag readiness lightstays on after you start your vehicle.

WARNING

Under no circumstances should anymodifications be made that affect thesteering wheel or the airbags electri-cal circuitry.

Before starting any welding work on

the car, always disconnect the nega-tive () battery lead and cover the con-ductor.

Airbags and belt pretensioners mustbe deployed under controlled condi-tions before the car is scrapped or anyof the systems components are

removed. Airbags or belt pretension-ers that have been deployed as aresult of an accident must be replacedby new ones.

Airbag-system components mustnever be transferred for use in anothervehicle.

All work involving the scrapping orreplacement of airbags or belt preten-sioners must only be carried out byknowledgeable personnel.

Are the smoke and fumes given off when theairbag operates at all harmful?

Most people who have remained in a car

with little or no ventilation for several min-utes complained only of minor irritation ofthe throat and eyes. Avoid as much as pos-sible getting dust on your skin as there is arisk of skin irritation.

If this trouble persists, you should consult adoctor.

If you suffer from asthma, the incident maybring on an attack, in which case you shouldfollow the normal procedure advised byyour doctor. It is advisable to consult adoctor afterwards.

What should I do if the AIR-BAG warninglight comes on?

If the warning light is on, it means that a fault

has been detected in the system. Theairbag cannot be relied on to operate asintended and it might even be activatederroneously. You should therefore take thecar to an authorized Saab dealer as soon aspossible.

WARNING

When an airbag is inflated there is dust inthe air.

Because the dust/smoke can, in certaincases, cause irritation to the skin, the fol-lowing precautions should be taken:

As soon as possible, wash anyexposed skin using a mild soap andwater.

If there is irritation of the eyes, flushthem liberally with clean water for atleast 20 minutes.

The key fits all the cars locks

The key supplied with the car has a codenumber on a black plastic tag that needs tobe quoted for ordering additional keys. Youshould therefore make a careful note of thenumber.

The key contains a unique electronic codefor your car. When the key is inserted in the

ignition, the code is checked. If it matches,the car can be started.

Two keys are supplied with the car. It is pos-sible to have up to four at one time that arecoded for your car. If one is lost, contactyour authorized Saab dealer to obtain areplacement. If an additional key is to beadded, all of the original keys must bebrought to the dealer so that the controlmodule can learn to recognize the newcomponents.

NOTE: For this reason, we strongly adviseyou to take two keys with you on long jour-neys and to keep them separate. If all keysare lost, it will be necessary to replace costlyelectronic components as well as the keysand remotes. This loss and replacement

cost is not covered by the new car warranty.

WARNINGLeaving children or pets unattended in alocked car is dangerous. It is also danger-ous to leave children in a vehicle with theignition key. A child or others could bebadly injured or even killed.

This switch is inoperative when the car islocked from the outside.

The interior locking buttons on each dooraffect only the respective door on sedan.The drivers door lock button willlock/unlock both on the Convertible.

If the car is left with the doors open, the inte-rior lighting will be switched off automati-cally after 20 minutes, to prevent a deadbattery.

WARNING

Having the doors locked when you aredriving will reduce the likelihood of:

Children, in particular, opening doorsand falling out of the car.

Intruders entering the car when it ismoving slowly or at a standstill.

Injury resulting from a door burstingopen in the event of an accident.

However, you must also remember thatlocked doors can hamper rescuers in theevent of an accident.

Changing the key batteryWhen the battery voltage in the key fallsbelow a predetermined level the SID willissue the following message: REPLACEKEY BATTERY. Press the CLEAR buttonon the SID to acknowledge this message.You must then replace the battery without

delay to avoid malfunctions.The life of the battery is normally 4 years.After changing the battery you must pressthe unlocking button of the key four times (oruntil the door locks cycle) while the car iswithin the range of the key in order for thecontrol module to recognize the remote.

Battery type: Panasonic CR 1632, 3V lith-ium. The battery type is stamped on the

inside of the battery cover. Avoid putting fin-gerprints on the flat sides of the battery.

Dispose of the old battery properly when

you buy a new one. These batteries containsubstances that are environmentallyhazardous.

Child safety locks

The rear doors have child safety locks thatare activated by a button next to the doorlatch on the end of the rear doors.

Shift the button up or down according to thelabel on the door in question.

When the child safety lock is in the lockedposition, the door cannot be opened from

the inside, but can be opened from the out-side.

Trunk lockThe trunk does not unlock when the other

doors are unlocked. The trunk button on thedrivers door is inoperative when the car islocked or moving at a speed greater than2.7 mph (4 km/h).

To unlock

The trunk is unlocked using:

The button on the key.

The trunk switch on the inside of thedrivers door (if the car is unlocked and ata standstill).

The key in the trunk lock. The key holehas a cover plate that must be carefullypushed aside.

The trunk is opened using the opening

handle above the number plate.Remote unlocking is confirmed by the direc-tion indicators blinking three times.

The unlocking button in the drivers door isinoperative when the car is locked.

If the trunk is opened using remote unlock-ing, the alarm will not be triggered.

Car alarm

The car alarm (anti-theft system) is acti-vated/deactivated when the car islocked/unlocked by the key (remote or bythe key in the drivers door.

All the doors plus trunk lid and hood aremonitored by microswitches, and win-dow-glass sensors will trigger the alarm ifany glass is broken.

Electronic starting interlock (immobilizer),see page42.

The car alarm is armed 10 seconds after thecar has been locked by the remote control.During this ten-second delay period, thedoors, trunk lid and hood may still beopened without the alarm being triggered.

The LED indicator on the dash will be oncontinuously during this period, at the end ofwhich it will start to flash (once every thirdsecond) when the alarm arms.

If a door or the trunk lid or hood has been leftopen when the car is locked, the LED on thedash will flash (three times per second) forten seconds to indicate that something iswrong.

Check to ensure that all the doors, plustrunk lid and hood, are closed properly.

If the fault persists (LED flashing whenrenewed attempt made to activate the caralarm by remote locking), lock the car usingthe key in the drivers door instead. The car

alarm may not have been activated and youshould get in touch with an authorized Saabdealer.

Be sure everyone using the car is familiarwith how both the car alarm and the lockingsystem work. This will avoid the alarm beingtriggered inadvertently.

If the alarm is tripped (the direction indica-tors are flashing and the siren is on) it canbe turned off by unlocking the car using the

button.

WARNING

Leaving children or pets unattended in alocked car is dangerous. It is also danger-ous to leave children in a vehicle with theignition key. A child or others could bebadly injured or even killed.

Activating the car alarmThe car alarm cannot be activated if thedrivers door is open or if the ignition switch

is in position ON.If, on the other hand, one of the other doorsor the trunk or hood is open or opened andnot closed again during the 10-seconddelay period, it will be excluded from thealarm function.

If it is then closed, a new delay period of tenseconds will start, and the door (or trunk or

hood) will once again be secured by thealarm system.

As usual, the LED will be on continuouslyduring the new delay period and will start toflash every three seconds after the 10-sec-ond period has elapsed.

Window glass sensorThe car-alarm (anti-theft system) incorpo-rates a sensor that monitors the window

glass for the sound of breakage. The sensoris fitted inside the rear dome light (on Con-vertibles: in the front interior light).

To avoid false alarms, such as the alarmbeing triggered by children or pets left insidethe car, the sensor can be temporarily dis-abled.

To disable the sensor

To disable the sensor, first turn off the igni-tion and remove the key from the switch.Next, press and hold the NIGHT PANELbutton until DOOR ALARM ONLY appearson the SID and a chime sounds. The caralarm must now be activated within threeminutes, or the glass sensor will become

active again.The glass sensor will be enabled againautomatically the next time the car isunlocked. The sensor can also be enabledagain by repeating the procedure for dis-abling it. When the sensor has beenenabled, FULL THEFT ALARM willappear on the SID.

If a fault is detected in the glass sensor,SERVICE THEFT ALARM will appear onthe SID.

9-3 Convertible:when the car is parkedwith the soft top down, the glass sensor willbe automatically disabled.

Electronic starting interlock(immobilizer)When the key is inserted in the ignition, asignal is sent to the receiver. If the signal isverified, the engine can be started.

Each time the key is removed from the igni-tion, the electronic immobilizer is activated.

If a fault is detected (e.g. in the transmitter)KEY NOT ACCEPTED will appear on theSID.

In this case, you can still start the car if youturn the ignition key to ON and press one ofthe buttons on the key.

Take the car to an authorized Saab dealer tohave the system checked.

The LED on the top of the dash dou-ble-flashes when the car is immobilized.

Alarm signalsWhen the car alarm is armed, it will be trig-gered if any door, the trunk lid or hood, is

opened, or if a window is broken.The alarm will also be triggered if an attemptis made to bypass or short-circuit the igni-tion switch, or to disconnect the battery.

If the alarm is triggered, the following alarmsignals will be set off:

Flashing of hazard warning lights for five

minutes. Siren wailing for 30 seconds.

The alarm signals will stop if the alarm isdeactivated (car unlocked) during the alarmperiod.

Panic-functionIn the car alarm system is a function called"Panic-function".

To activate panic function: Push and hold one of the buttons on the

key for 2 seconds, or if you are sittinginside the car...

Push the LOCK-switch on the center con-sole for 2 seconds (not Convertibles).

These actions will trigger the alarm (hazard

warning lights and siren).To deactivate panic function:

Push one of the buttons on thekey.

Push the LOCK-switch in the center con-sole.

Turn the key in one of the doors or

Turn the ignition to ON.When the panic-function is activated the carwill be locked/unlocked depending uponwhich button was pushed.

When the ignition is ON the panic-functioncannot be activated.

NOTE

It is possible to inadvertently deacti-

vate the car alarm and at the sametime unlock the car, if the button on thekey is pressed by mistake when thecar is still within its range.

When locking the car by remote con-trol in extremely cold weather, it isadvisable to check that the lock

system has operated properly. To doso, check that the interior locking but-tons are all down.If not, unlock and relock the car again.

Key The range of the key is normally 5-10 yds.(5-10 metres), although it can be substantiallymore than this in ideal conditions.If the key is not working, it may be because the

code signal has not been synchronized with thatin the control module for the car alarm. To rectifythis, press the unlock button on the key at leastfour times in quick succession. When it is recog-nized, the door locks will cycle.If a key is lost, the new one will have to be pro-grammed (all keys must be present) to match thecars unique security code. Get in touch with an

authorized Saab dealer.

Battery for key The battery for the key will normally have a life of4 years. When the battery needs changing,REPLACE KEY BATTERY will appear on the

SID.After fitting a new battery, press the unlock but-ton on the key at least four times (when the caris in its range) in succession, so that the caralarm can recognize the signals from the trans-mitter.

Car-batteryvoltage

If the battery is disconnected while the alarm isactive (car is locked), for example during anattempt to steal the car, the alarm will be trig-gered.

ConvertibleGeneral safety instructions

Never touch the hinges and struts of thesoft top nor the upper beam of the wind-shield while operating the soft top.

After raising the soft top, always checkthat it is properly secured to the top beamof the windshield with the soft top lockingdevice before driving the car away.After folding it down you should check thatthe tonneau cover latches have engagedproperly. Otherwise it may come loosewhile you are driving and cause injury.

Do not operate the soft top with passen-gers in the rear seat or bystanders rightnext to the car. There is a risk of head inju-ries while the soft top is in motion.

Remove child car seats and childrenbefore operating the soft top.

Dont operate the soft top in temperaturesbelow 23F (-5C).

Note that certain automatic carwashescan do damage to fabric soft tops. Thisapplies to carwashes that use mechanicalfeelers bearing against the body. We

advise against washing a Saab 9-3 Con-vertible in automatic carwashes.

Note that certain automatic car washescan cause water to leak in places that nor-mally would not leak. Do not direct highpressure streams of water at the seals forthe convertible top.

Roof racks and ski holders must not bemounted on the soft top.

Under no circumstances should anythingbe put into the storage space for the softtop (under the tonneau cover) since thiscould cause obstruction when the soft topis being folded away.

See that no luggage is resting against thesoft top stowage space since this couldinterfere with the rasing and folding of thesoft top.

When the soft top is being operated, lowering or raising should be completed. Donot leave the soft top partially raised orlowered: after 20 seconds it will quickly

"settle down" when the hydraulic pres-sure is automatically released.

It is important that the telescopic lockinghandle is completely pushed in when thesoft top is closed.

Fold down any auxilliary mountedantenna before raising the top to avoid

possible antenna or top damage (e.g.,OnStar cellular antenna on windshield ofConvertible).

Raising the soft top

1 Start the engine and let it idle.

2 Slide the ROOF button forward until the5th bow is locked in the tonneau coverand the SID has given an OK signal

(beep). The top must be locked within20 seconds. If this is not done the softtop will lift an inch or two (a few centime-ters. In this case, slide the ROOF buttonforward again until the SID gives an OKsignal. Lock the soft top with the lockinghandle.Note that all side windows will be auto-matically lowered an inch or two (a fewcentimetres) so as to protect the seal

strips when the soft top is raised.The window operation is bypassedthroughout the raising cycle to preventthe windows being raised.

3 Pull the front end of the soft top downwith the aid of the closing handle andlock the soft top by rotating the lockinghandle up.

Pull the handle down.

Rotate the handle upwards, the soft topwill be locked.

Push the handle in.

Check that the hooks have locked the softtop.

Points 6 to 8 are only valid if the soft top isoperated manually when the soft top ton-neau is locked.

1 Tip the backrests of the rear seat for-

ward.2 Unlock the rear-seat backrest with theignition key just outboard of the left rearheadrest and tip it forward.

3 Remove the round rubber cover over thehydraulic valve.

4 Open the valve about half a turn.

5 Open the trunk lid.6 Take out the wheel lug wrench.

7 In the soft top tonneau mechanism andinside the trunk lid lining on theright-hand side, is a hole into which thestraight part of the tool is to be inserted;see the figure.

8 Unlock the tonneau cover by pulling the

tool backwards. The cover should lifthalf an inch or so (a centimeter or so).Remove the tool. Close the trunk lid.

WARNINGManual operation of the soft top must beresorted to only to raiseit in an emer-gency (e.g. in case of an electrical orhydraulic fault).

handle and lock the soft top to the wind-shield beam. Make sure that the hooksengage in the beam.

17 In the trunk: replace the tool in the softtop mechanism and lock the soft top ton-neau by pushing the tool forward untilthe stop point.

18 Take the tool out.The soft top system must be checked andrepaired by an authorized Saab dealer asquickly as possible.

WARNING

Do not touch the hinges and struts of thesoft top during raising. Keep your hands

clear of the upper beam of the windshield- this is a pinch hazard area. Do not oper-ate the soft top with passengers in therear seat or with bystanders right next tothe car.

NOTE

Close the cover carefully so as not todamage the small flaps in the front.

The raising or lowering of the soft top is

obstructed because the trunk lid is not closed.

Close the trunk lid so it is latched securely.

CHECK SOFTTOP LATCHES

The soft top is not latched to the top beam of thewindshield.

Somebody is trying to lower the soft top while itis still locked to the windshield beam.

Lock the soft top with the locking handle, see page51. Release the soft top with the locking handle, see page49.

Raising or lowering was stopped before thecycle completed.

The soft top cover is not being locked. The soft top cover doesnt open.

Make sure that the valve for manual raising of the soft top isclosed, see page52.

Try to slide the ROOF button backwards once more.

SOFT TOP FAIL-URE

Serious fault in soft top mechanism. Try to slide the ROOF button once more. BE VERY CAREFUL AND MAKE SURE THAT NOTHING IS

OBSTRUCTING THE OPERATION OF THE SOFT TOP.

Remove anything that can obstruct the operation of the soft top. Operate the soft top manually, see page52.

CHECK SOFTTOP

Something is in the way and is obstructing theoperation of the soft top by the electro- hydrau-lics.

The soft top cover has not locked at the front onboth sides.

The 5th bow (rear window) has not locked to the

soft top cover on both sides.

Try to slide the ROOF button once more. BE VERY CAREFUL AND MAKE SURE THAT NOTHING IS

On the center console is a switch (see illus-tration) for the simultaneous closing oropening of the four side windows.

Using the ROOF-button

When folding the soft top down, you canlower all windows by continuing to hold theROOF button backwards after the soft tophas been folded down.

When the soft top is being raised, all sidewindows are automatically lowered an inchor two (a few centimetres) to protect theirseals. After the "beep" is heard, the hooks

Trunk, 9-3 Convertible

Hooking up top storage bagMore space in the trunk can be obtained bylifting the top storage bag up by the strapsunder it and hooking them in the eyelets atthe top of the bag.

The top storage bag can only be hooked upin this way when the top is raised. If you

attempt to lower the top while the bag ishooked up, the SID will display the message"CHECK SOFT TOP STORAGE"; see page54.

Unlocking the trunk lid by using the remotetrunk release button on the drivers door ispossible only when the top isfullylowered

or raised (note that the ignition must be inposition ON when the top is lowered).

The trunk button on the drivers door is inop-erative when the car is locked.

Rear seatThe rear seat is intended for two passen-

gers.The two rear seat positions have three-pointsafety belts with inertia reels.

Lowering the rear seatbackTo increase the load-carrying capacity of

the car, the rear seatback can be folded for-ward. This will be easier if the front seats arenot too far back.

1 Pass the rear safety belts under theblack handles at both ends of the back-rest. This prevents the safety belts frombecoming caught when the seatback israised again.

2 The seatback is fitted with a lock at thetop near the left rear head restraint. Usethe ignition key to unlock the entire back-rest. Remove the key.

3 Lower the seatback. (In Canada, if usingchild seat top tether strap, detach fromanchorage in trunk prior to lowering the

seatback.).

NOTE

If the trunk lid is opened by unlocking itwith the key when the top is not fully raisedor lowered, damage to the trunk lid and/ortop system could result.
