This system is commonly known asthe On Board Diagnostics System(OBD II). This OBD II systemprotects the environment byensuring that your vehiclecontinues to meet governmentemission standards. The OBD IIsystem also assists the servicetechnician in properly servicingyour vehicle.8Instrumentation

The Check engine indicator lightilluminates when the ignition is firstturned to the ON position to checkthe bulb. If it comes on after theengine is started, one of the

engine's emission control systemsmay be malfunctioning. The lightmay illuminate without adriveability concern being noted. The vehicle will usually bedriveable and will not requiretowing. What you should do if the check

engine light il luminatesLight turns on solid:This means that the OBD II systemhas detected a malfunction.Temporary malfunctions may causeyour Check engine light toilluminate. Examples are:1. The vehicle has run out of fuel.(The engine may misfire or runpoorly).2. Poor fuel quality or water in the

fuel.3. The fuel cap may not have beenproperly installed and securelytightened. These temporary malfunctions canbe corrected by filling the fuel tankwith good quality fuel and/orproperly installing and securelytightening the gas cap. After threedrive cycles without these or anyother temporary malfunctionspresent, the Check engine lightshould turn off. (A driving cycleconsists of a cold engine startupfollowed by mixed city/highwaydriving). No additional vehicleservice is required.9InstrumentationIf the Check engine light remainson, have your vehicle serviced atthe first available opportunity.

Light is blinking:Engine misfire is occurring whichcould damage your catalyticconverter. You should drive in amoderate fashion (avoid heavyacceleration and deceleration) andhave your vehicle serviced at thefirst available opportunity.Under engine misfireconditions, excessiveexhaust temperatures could

damage the catalytic converter, the fuel system, interior floorcoverings or other vehiclecomponents, possibly causing afire.

Always drive and ride withyour seatback upright andthe lap belt snug and low across

the hips.To prevent the risk ofinjury, make sure childrensit where they can be properlyrestrained.

Always transport children12 years old and under inthe back seat and always useappropriate child restraints.Never let a passenger holda child on his or her lapwhile the vehicle is moving. Thepassenger cannot protect thechild from injury in a collision.

All occupants of thevehicle, including thedriver, should always properlywear their safety belts, evenwhen an air bag SRS is provided.81Seating and safety restraintsIt is extremely dangerous to

ride in a cargo area, insideor outside of a vehicle. In acollision, people riding in theseareas are more likely to beseriously injured or killed. Do notallow people to ride in any area ofyour vehicle that is not equippedwith seats and safety belts. Besure everyone in your vehicle is ina seat and using a safety beltproperly.

Each seating position inyour vehicle has a specificsafety belt assembly which ismade up of one buckle and onetongue that are designed to be

collisions.Vehicle sensitive modeThe vehicle sensitive mode is thenormal retractor mode, allowingfree shoulder belt lengthadjustment to your movements andlocking in response to vehiclemovement. For example, if the

driver brakes suddenly or turns acorner sharply, or the vehiclereceives an impact of 8 km/h(5 mph) or more, the combinationsafety belts will lock to help reduceforward movement of the driverand passengers.84Seating and safety restraintsSafety belt pretensionerYour vehicle is equipped with safetybelt pretensioners at the driver and

front passenger seating positions. The safety belt pretensioner is adevice which removes excesswebbing from the safety beltsystem. The safety beltpretensioner uses the same crashsensor system as the front air bagsupplemental restraint system(SRS). When the safety beltpretensioner deploys, webbingfrom the lap and shoulder belt istightened. The driver and frontpassenger seat belt system(including retractors, buckles andheight adjusters) must be replacedif the vehicle is involved in acollision that results in deploymentof front airbags and safety beltpretensioners.

Automatic locking modeIn this mode, the shoulder belt is

to remind occasional wearers towear safety belts all of the time. The following are reasons mostoften given for not wearing safetybelts: (All statistics based on U.S.data)Reasons given... Consider...Crashes are rare events" 36 700 crashes occur every day.

The more we drive, the more weare exposed to rare" events, evenfor good drivers. 1 in 4 of us will

be seriously injured in a crashduring our lifetimes.I'm not going far" 3 of 4 fatal crashes occur within

25 miles of home.Belts are uncomfortable" Ford designs its safety belts to

enhance comfort. If you areuncomfortable try differentpositions for the safety belt upperanchorage and seatback whichshould be as upright as possible;this can improve comfort.

I was in a hurry" Prime time for an accident. BeltMinder reminds us to take a few

seconds to buckle up.Seat belts don't work" Safety belts, when used properly, reduce risk of death to front seatoccupants by 45% in cars, and by60% in light trucks.

Traffic is l ight" Nearly 1 of 2 deaths occur insinglevehicle crashes, manywhen no other vehicles are around.

90Seating and safety restraintsReasons given... Consider...Belts wrinkle my clothes" Possibly, but a serious crash can do

much more than wrinkle yourclothes, particularly if you areunbelted.

The people I'm with don't wear Set the example, teen deaths occurbelts" 4 times more often in vehicles with

I have an air bag" Air bags offer greater protectionwhen used with safety belts.Frontal airbags are not designed toinflate in rear and side crashes orrollovers.

I'd rather be thrown clear" Not a good idea, people who areejected are 40 times morelikely to DIE. Safety belts helpprevent ejection. WE CAN'T PICKOUR CRASH".

91Seating and safety restraintsDo not sit on top of abuckled safety belt to avoid

the Belt Minder chime. Sitting onthe safety belt will increase therisk of injury in an accident. Todisable (one time) or deactivatethe Belt Minder feature pleasefollow the directions statedbelow. One time disable

proceeding with thedeactivation/activationprogramming procedure. The Belt Minder feature can bedeactivated/activated byperforming the followingprocedure:Before following the procedure,

make sure that: the parking brake is set. the gearshift is in P (Park)(automatic transaxle) or theneutral position (manualtransaxle). the ignition switch is in the OFFposition. all vehicle doors are closed.92Seating and safety restraints the driver's safety belt is

unbuckled. the parklamps/headlamps are inOFF position. To reduce the risk of injury,do not deactivate/activatethe Belt Minder feature whiledriving the vehicle.1. Turn the ignition switch to theON position (DO NOT START THEENGINE).2. Wait until the Safety beltwarning light turns off(approximately 12 minutes). Steps 3-5 must be completedwithin 60 seconds or the procedurewill have to be repeated.3. Buckle then unbuckle the safetybelt three times, ending with thesafety belt unbuckled. This can bedone before or during Belt Minderwarning activation.

    4. Turn on the headlamps, turn offthe headlamps.5. Buckle then unbuckle the safetybelt three times, ending with thesafety belt unbuckled. After step 5, the Safety beltwarning light will be turned on forthree seconds.93Seating and safety restraints6. Within seven seconds of theSafety belt warning light turning

off, buckle then unbuckle the safetybelt. This will disable Belt Minder if itis currently enabled, or enable BeltMinder if it is currently disabled.

    7. Confirmation of disabling BeltMinder is provided by flashing theSafety belt light four times persecond for three seconds.8. Confirmation of enabling BeltMinder is provided by flashing theSafety belt light four times persecond for three seconds, followed

by three seconds with the Safetybelt light off, then followed byflashing the Safety belt light fourtimes per second for three secondsagain.9. After receiving confirmation, thedeactivation/activation procedure iscomplete.94Seating and safety restraintsSafety belt extension assemblyIf the safety belt is too short, even

when fully extended, 20 cm(8 inches) can be added to thesafety belt assembly by adding asafety belt extension assembly(part number 611C22). Safety beltextension assemblies can beobtained from your dealer at nocost.Use only extensions manufacturedby the same supplier as the safetybelt. Manufacturer identification islocated at the end of the webbingon the label.

Also, use the safety belt extensiononly if the safety belt is too shortfor you when fully extended. Donot use extensions to change the fitof the shoulder belt across thetorso.95Seating and safety restraintsSafety belt maintenance

Inspect the safety belt systemsperiodically to make sure they workproperly and are not damaged.Inspect the safety belts to makesure there are no nicks, wears orcuts, replacing if necessary. Allsafety belt assemblies (slide bar)(if equipped), shoulder belt heightadjusters (if equipped), child safetyseat tether bracket assemblies (ifequipped), and attaching hardware,

should be inspected after acollision. Ford recommends that allsafety belt assemblies used invehicles involved in a collision bereplaced. However, if the collision

    47/145

was minor and a qualifiedtechnician finds that the belts donot show damage and continue tooperate properly, they do not needto be replaced. Safety beltassemblies not in use during acollision should also be inspectedand replaced if either damage or

improper operation is noted.Failure to inspect and, ifnecessary, replace thesafety belt assembly under theabove conditions could result insevere personal injuries in theevent of a collision.Refer to Cleaning andmaintaining the safety belts inthe Maintenance and carechapter.

96Seating and safety restraintsAIR BAG SUPPLEMENTALRESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS)Important supplementalrestraint system (SRS)precautionsThe supplemental restraint systemis designed to work with the safetybelt to help protect the driver andright front passenger from certainupper body injuries.

Air bags DO NOT inflate slowly orgently and the risk of injury from adeploying air bag is the greatestclose to the trim covering the airbag module.

All occupants of the vehicleincluding the driver shouldalways properly wear their safetybelts even when air bag SRS isprovided.

Always transport children12 years old and under inthe back seat and always useappropriate child restraints.97Seating and safety restraintsNHTSA recommends aminimum distance of atleast 25 cm (ten [10] inches)between an occupant's chest andthe air bag module.Steps you can take to properly

position yourself away from the airbag: Move your seat to the rear as faras you can while still reaching thepedals comfortably.

    48/145

Recline your seat slightly (one ortwo degrees) from the uprightposition.Do not put anything on orover the air bag module.Placing objects on or over the airbag inflation area may causethose objects to be propelled by

the air bag into your face andtorso causing serious injury.Do not attempt to service, repair, or modify the AirBag Supplemental RestraintSystem or its fuses. See yourFord or LincolnMercury dealer.98Seating and safety restraintsChildren and air bagsFor additional important safetyinformation, read all information on

safety restraints in this guide.Children must always be properlyrestrained. Accident statisticssuggest that children are saferwhen properly restrained in therear seating positions than in thefront seating positions. Failure tofollow these instructions mayincrease the risk of injury in acollision.

Air bags can kill or injure achild in a child seat.NEVER place a rearfacing childseat in front of an active air bag.If you must use a forwardfacingchild seat in the front seat, movethe seat all the way back. How does the air bagsupplemental restraint systemwork? The air bag SRS is designed to

activate when the vehicle sustainssufficient longitudinal decelerationto cause the sensors to close anelectrical circuit that initiates airbag inflation.99Seating and safety restraintsThe fact that the air bags did notinflate in a collision does not meanthat something is wrong with thesystem. Rather, it means the forceswere not of the type sufficient to

cause activation. The front air bagsare designed to inflate in frontaland nearfrontal collisions, notrollover, sideimpact, or rearimpacts.

  • 7/30/2019 2000 Ford focus owner guide

    49/145

For information on sideimpactcollisions, refer to Side airbagsystem (if equipped) in thischapter. The air bags inflate and deflaterapidly upon activation. After airbag deployment, it is normal tonotice a smokelike, powdery

residue or smell the burntpropellant. This may consist ofcornstarch, talcum powder (tolubricate the bag) or sodiumcompounds (e.g., baking soda) thatresult from the combustion processthat inflates the air bag. Smallamounts of sodium hydroxide maybe present which may irritate theskin and eyes, but none of theresidue is toxic.

100Seating and safety restraintsWhile the system is designed tohelp reduce serious injuries, it mayalso cause minor burns, abrasions, swelling or temporary hearing loss.Because air bags must inflaterapidly and with considerable force, there is the risk of death or seriousinjuries such as fractures, facial andeye injuries or internal injuries, particularly to occupants who arenot properly restrained or areotherwise out of position at thetime of air bag deployment. Thus, itis extremely important thatoccupants be properly restrained asfar away from the air bag module aspossible while maintaining vehiclecontrol.Several air bag systemcomponents get hot after

inflation. Do not touch them afterinflation. If the air bag is inflated, theair bag will not functionagain and must be replacedimmediately. If the air bag is notreplaced, the unrepaired area willincrease the risk of injury in acollision.101Seating and safety restraintsThe SRS consists of:

driver and passenger air bagmodules (which include theinflators and air bags). side air bags (if equipped). Referto Side air bag system later in this

system. Refer to the Air bagreadiness section in theInstrumentation chapter. Routinemaintenance of the air bag is notrequired.102Seating and safety restraints

A difficulty with the system isindicated by one or more of thefollowing: The readiness light will eitherflash or stay lit. The readiness light will notilluminate immediately afterignition is turned on. A series of five beeps will beheard. The tone pattern will repeatperiodically until the program andlight are repaired. If any of these things happen, evenintermittently, have the SRSserviced at your dealership or by a

qualified technician immediately.Unless serviced, the system maynot function properly in the eventof a collision.Side air bag system(if equipped)Do not use accessory seatcovers. The use ofaccessory seat covers mayprevent the deployment of theside air bags and increase the risk

of injury in an accident.Do not lean your head onthe door; the side air bagcould injure you as it deploysfrom the side of the seatback.

All occupants of the vehicleincluding the driver should

always wear their safety beltseven when an air bag SRS isprovided. How does the side air bagsystem work? The side air bag system consists ofthe following: An inflatable nylon bag (air bag)with a gas generator concealedbehind the outboard bolster of thedriver and front passenger

seatbacks. The same warning light, electronic control and diagnosticunit as used for the front air bags. Two crash sensors located underthe outboard side of the front seats, attached to the floor.Side air bags, in combination withseat belts, can help reduce the riskof severe injuries in the event of asignificant side impact collision.104Seating and safety restraintsThe side air bags are fitted on theoutboard side of the seatbacks ofthe front seats. In certain lateralcollisions, the air bag on the sideaffected by the collision will beinflated, even if the respective seatis not occupied. The air bag wasdesigned to inflate between thedoor panel and occupant to further

enhance the protection providedoccupants in side impact collisions. The air bag SRS is designed toactivate when the vehicle sustainssufficient lateral deceleration tocause the sensors to close anelectrical circuit that initiates airbag inflation. The fact that the air bags did notinflate in a collision does not meanthat something is wrong with the

system. Rather, it means the forceswere not of the type sufficient tocause activation. Side air bags aredesigned to inflate in sideimpactcollisions, not rollover, rearimpact,

If the side air bag hasdeployed, the air bag willnot function again. The sideair bag system (including theseat) must be inspected andserviced by a qualifiedtechnician in accordance withthe vehicle service manual. Ifthe air bag is not replaced, theunrepaired area will increase therisk of injury in a coll ision.

Determining if the system isoperationalThe SRS uses a readiness light inthe instrument cluster or a tone toindicate the condition of thesystem. Refer to the Air bagreadiness section in theInstrumentation chapter. Routinemaintenance of the air bag is notrequired.

A difficulty with the system isindicated by one or more of thefollowing: The readiness light will eitherflash or stay lit. The readiness light will notilluminate immediately afterignition is turned on.106Seating and safety restraintsIf either of these indications occurs, even intermittently, have the SRS

serviced at your dealership or by aqualified technician immediately.Unless serviced, the system maynot function properly in the eventof a collision.Disposal of air bags and air bagequipped vehiclesFor disposal of air bags or air bagequipped vehicles, see your localdealership or a qualified technician.

safety restraints for children. Alsosee Air Bag SupplementalRestraint System (SRS) in thischapter for special instructionsabout using air bags.107Seating and safety restraintsImportant child restraintprecautions

You are required by law to usesafety restraints for children in theU.S. and Canada. If small childrenride in your vehicle (generallychildren who are four years old oryounger and who weigh 18 kg[40 lbs] or less), you must put themin safety seats made especially forchildren. Check your local and stateor provincial laws for specificrequirements regarding the safety

of children in your vehicle.Never let a passenger holda child on his or her lapwhile the vehicle is moving. Thepassenger cannot protect thechild from injury in a collision.

Always follow the instructions andwarnings that come with any infantor child restraint you might use. When possible, place children inthe rear seat of your vehicle.

Accident statistics suggest thatchildren are safer when properlyrestrained in the rear seatingpositions than in the front seatingpositions.108Seating and safety restraintsChildren and safety beltsIf the child is the proper size, restrain the child in a safety seat.Children who are too large for child

safety seats (as specified by thechild safety seat manufacturer)should always wear safety belts.Follow all the important safetyrestraints and air bag precautionsthat apply to adult passengers inyour vehicle. If the shoulder belt portion of acombination lap and shoulder beltcan be positioned so it does notcross or rest in front of the child's

face or neck, the child should wearthe lap and shoulder belt. Movingthe child closer to the center of thevehicle may help provide a goodshoulder belt fit.

Do not leave children, unreliable adults, or petsunattended in your vehicle.109Seating and safety restraintsTo improve the fit of lap andshoulder belts on children whohave outgrown child safety seats,Ford recommends use of a

beltpositioning booster seat that islabelled as conforming to allFederal motor vehicle safetystandards. Beltpositioning boosterseats raise the child and provide ashorter, firmer seating cushion thatencourages safer seating postureand better fit of lap and shoulderbelts on the child.

A beltpositioning booster seatshould be used if the shoulder belt

rests in front of the child's face orneck, or if the lap belt does not fitsnugly on both thighs, or if thethighs are too short to let the childsit all the way back on the seatcushion when the lower legs hangover the edge of the seat cushion. You may wish to discuss the specialneeds of your child with yourpediatrician.110Seating and safety restraintsSAFETY BELTS FOR CHILDRENChild and infant or child safetyseatsUse a safety seat that isrecommended for the size andweight of the child. Carefully followall of the manufacturer'sinstructions with the safety seatyou put in your vehicle. If you donot install and use the safety seat

properly, the child may be injuredin a sudden stop or collision. When installing a child safety seat: Review and follow theinformation presented in the AirBag Supplemental RestraintSystem section in this chapter. Use the correct safety belt bucklefor that seating position. Insert the belt tongue into theproper buckle until you hear a snap

and feel it latch. Make sure thetongue is securely fastened in thebuckle. Keep the buckle release buttonpointing up and away from the

safety seat, with the tonguebetween the child seat and therelease button, to preventaccidental unbuckling.111Seating and safety restraints Place seatback in uprightposition. Put the safety belt in the

automatic locking mode. Refer toUsing automatic locking mode(passenger side front and outboardrear seating positions) (ifequipped).Ford recommends the use of a childsafety seat having a top tetherstrap. Install the child safety seat ina seating position which is capableof providing a tether anchorage. For more information on top tether

straps see Attaching safety seatswith tether straps in this chapter.Carefully follow all of themanufacturer's instructionsincluded with the safety seat youput in your vehicle. If you do notinstall and use the safety seatproperly, the child may be injuredin a sudden stop or collision.112Seating and safety restraintsInstalling child safety seats incombination lap and shoulderbelt seat positions1. Position the child safety seat ina seat with a combination lap andshoulder belt. NEVER place arearfacing child seat in front of anactive air bag.

Air bags can kill or injure achild in a child seat. If youmust use a forwardfacing child

seat in the front seat, move theseat all the way back.Rearfacing child seatsshould NEVER be placed inthe front seats.2. Pull down on the shoulder beltand then grasp the shoulder beltand lap belt together.113Seating and safety restraints3. While holding the shoulder andlap belt portions together, route the

tongue through the child seataccording to the child seatmanufacturer's instructions. Besure the belt webbing is nottwisted.

    4. Insert the belt tongue into theproper buckle (the buckle closestto the direction the tongue iscoming from) for that seatingposition until you hear and feel thelatch engage. Make sure the tongueis latched securely by pulling on it.5. To put the retractor in the

automatic locking mode, grasp theshoulder portion of the belt andpull downward until all of the beltis extracted and a click is heard.114Seating and safety restraints6. Allow the belt to retract. Thebelt will click as it retracts toindicate it is in the automaticlocking mode.7. Pull the lap belt portion acrossthe child seat toward the buckle

and pull up on the shoulder beltwhile pushing down with your kneeon the child seat.8. Allow the safety belt to retractto remove any slack in the belt.9. Before placing the child in theseat, forcibly tilt the seat forwardand back to make sure the seat issecurely held in place.10. Try to pull the belt out of theretractor to make sure the retractoris in automatic locking mode (youshould not be able to pull more beltout). If the retractor is not locked, unbuckle the belt and repeat stepstwo through nine.Check to make sure the child seatis properly secured before eachuse.115Seating and safety restraints

    Attaching child safety seats

with ISOFIX attachmentsSome child seat manufacturersmake safety seats that are labeledas ISOFIX or ISOFIXcompatiblechild seats. These seats include tworigid or webbing mountedattachments that connect to twoISOFIX anchors at specific seatingpositions in your vehicle. This typeof child seat eliminates the need touse seat belts to attach the child
