The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (PI Millonig) and Rutgers School of Engineering (PI Yarmush) are excited to announce that we have been awarded a 5 year NIH Broadening Experiences in Scientific Training (BEST) grant.

Interdisciplinary Job Opportunities for Biomedical Scientists (iJOBs), provides general professional and focused career training in five professional tracks: i) science and health policy, ii) business management, iii) intellectual property management, iv) clinical and regulatory sciences, and v) health and science data analysis. The program is designed to complement time spent outside of lab and to maintain research as the primary trainee focus, while offering programming to broaden trainee’s perspectives, experiences and knowledge to facilitate pursuit of non‐academic careers.

• “ Having APHL fellows is a tremendous advantage for our laboratory.   We are able to maintain normal business operations, completing our routine workload on schedule. and with the knowledge and expertise of the fellow develop new methods and complete projects we might otherwise not be able to do.” Getting Projects Done for the PHL

Dr. Scott Shone, NBS Program Manager and former APHL Fellow

• “working with Rutgers Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences through their iJOBS program helps graduate students gain a broader perspective of the job market and gives the work we do in public health visibility.  Also, working with women undergraduate students through Douglass Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN), a national consortium of women’s college, helps preparing women for public leadership at all levels. They may become our future employees. ”Creating Visibility for the PHL

“Having interns in the laboratory helps staff refresh their knowledge and sharpen their skills.  Students ask questions that may require clarification and research on the part of staff members.   Students also bring fresh ideas on how to do things and current classroom knowledge.”  Keeps Staff on Their Toes

“ We provide college interns with such a great practical life experience.  Not only do they learn about the science of the work we do, but they learn applied methods and about the mission of the laboratory and public health.  This enables them to make better career choices for themselves, and enriches their outlook about science careers.” Opportunity to Gain Practical
