THE "SUEZ."The following has been kindly

furnished us by AV. O. Smith, Esq.who loft on the Suez on her last

trip to San Francisco, and returnedby her yesterday, and can, therefore,be relied upon ns being correct. Wewould here express our thanks inthe n.imo of our readers for the

kindly' thoughtfulncss, which

thus enables us ttf lay before

the public of Honolulu n true nnd

faithful account of this mnttcr,

which hns interested and excited thewhole population of the country:

The Suez sailed from Honolulufor Snn Francisco, Dec. 22nd, withbut three blndes on her propeller;one blade having been lost on theprevious voyage from Honolulu. After an eventful voyage she ai riv-

ed in Sau Francisco, at 4 a.m., on

Sunday, Dec. 31st, on schedulelime. On Tuesday, Jan. 9th, shesailed for Honolulu with a full com-

plement of passengers and a largemail and cargo.

Prior to sailing the spare propel-ler and spaic piece of shaft were sentto the Risdon Iron Works to be fit-

ted, so ns to be ready on her returnfrom Honolulu.

The weather for the first threedays was very fair, with a smoothsen, then the wind hnulcd to the N.E. and was fresh, and raised thesen. Still the wcatlicr was such asis frequently met on this ocean.

On Saturday, the 13th, at.Gp.m.,another blade of the propeller brokeoff, leaving but two; they werenot alternate blades, but near to-

gether. The jarring of the machin-ery when the accident occurred wnsbcvere.

The ship was kept on her courseuntil the next clay, bunuay,nt twelve noon, when shewas Diit about and headed for SanFrancisco. She was then Lat. 28N. Long. MC. W; nearly 1300miles from San Francisco, nnd 800miles from Honolulu,

The wind was still from thcN. E.,nnd all sail was set, and at two p. m.(two hours after turning back) arain squall struck the &hip, nnd car-

ried away the top gallant mast, andbroke the forctop&ail yard in threepieces.

The squall lasted but fifteen min-

utes, but was severe, after this thefore and aft sails and foresails were

-- the only available sails, nnd werecarried all the way back. The pro-

peller was run at low speed, andwas favored bo as to avoid furtheraccident.

On Sunday evening, January 21,one week after turning back, thefehip anchored in San Francisco.

Tho daily run averaged 180 miles.A notable ovent occurred on

board, on Tuesday January 10th, inthe birth to Mrs, S. M. Damon of ason. (The subject of the nationalityof the littlo passengor may bo aquestion.)

At San Francisco a part of thocargo was discharged and the fahipplaced in the dry dock', and tho newpropeller and shaft fitted. It wasdiscovered that of tho two re-

maining1 blades of tho old 'pro-peller, one waf badly cracked. Itwas found that a flaw in, the crankpiii of the after (low presume) crankhad been opened by tho unusualstrain upon it, so that it was neces-sary to remove the crank shaft 'nndreplace it with the spare one (carriedon board), Placing this crank shaftdetained the vessel a day longer thanhad been anticipated. She finallysailed again on Wednesday, January81st, at 1 p,m. Tho new parts oftho machinery were favored some-what for the first day or two put,and Uieu fine runs were made, tillFebruary 8th, at 12 noon, when woarrived at Honolulu.

, The Suez left on Jan. Slst, fijio

Tin: non. II. A. P. Carter hasbeen appointed Minister Plenipoten-tiary nt Washington. We have notyet heard this otllciully, but we be-

lieve that it is a fact; and we con-

gratulate the country on having themost suitable man in it appointed tothe position.

. .

Tin: Suez arrived ycslcrdaj',bringing joy to hundreds. The wharfwas crowded with eager relativesand friends, anxiously awaiting nsight of'thc dear ones. All arc safeand well and have arrived, exceptMrs. S. Damon and family, who re-

main in San Francisco till able totravel.

We notice that the footpath orsidewalk on Nmiamt Street just at'the corner of Kukui place is beingrepaired and good substantial slopsarc being put in place of the olddangerous and rotten planking wliichwas tlicic before. The credit ofthis is due not to the government, but to the private enterprise of Mr.J. T. White.

Mr.ssns Hoffschlaegcr & Co areabout removing into the buildingnow occupied by G. W. Macfarlanc& Co next' to Mr. Adams. Messrs.Mncfarlnnc.nre .'.oing. to shift intothe corner building of the BeaverBlock. In order to fit the placemore thoroughly for Messrs Hoffscli-- ilaeger the upper story has beenraised some six inches, and new pil-

lars have just been put in. Whenall the alterations have been comple-ted it will make one of the nicestshow rooms in town.

It seems a peculiar thing, that ves-sels registered under the Hawaiianflag should bo measured and theirtonnage fixed by the rediculouslyantiquated system in' vogue here.It is not known in nny other civilizedcountry. And it bears particularlyhard upon Hawaiian vessels tradingto foreign ports as when they returnthey pay their dues on tlieir tonnage, and the difference is on oao case atleast 200 tons out of 700 a differ-ence of one-thir- d.
