COVID-19 asks us continually to adapt. Within almost five months we have already dealt with a whole array of changing circumstances. It is mind-boggling how such a tiny piece of chemical substance has been able to turn the world upside down. Fortunately, our parish is alive and we are able to make the changes that are needed to cooperate with the global efforts to get the pandemic under control. The organization of our outdoor drive-in Masses has been a joy and a blessing. It has given a new spirit to our parish. We also have learned to use the various technologies that can connect us through the internet. But in spite of this optimism, also an awareness grows that we might need to learn how to live with a continuing presence of the virus in our society. That means that we have to make our church “Corona-proof.”

If parish life can no longer take place inside our facilities, we have to find a new and sustainable way to live our Catholic faith. I believe that this as well can turn out to be a great blessing. The primary location of our faith tradition has always been the home of the faithful. Remember that in the book of Exodus Moses goes to the Meeting Tent, pitched at some distance from the camp of the Israelites. When he went out to pray all the fathers would stand at the entrance of their own family tent. At seeing the pillar of cloud coming down on the Meeting Tent, the fathers would join Moses in worship. In front of their own tent. Doesn’t that sound like something that we should re-learn? To pray at home with the Church?

The Second Vatican Council has spoken about this. The document Lumen Gentium states: The family is, so to speak, the domestic church. In it parents should, by their word and example, be the first preachers of the faith to their children. (LG 11)

Saint Mark is momentarily starting up a study group to learn more about what the Council exactly meant by this, and how the Church can assist the families to accomplish it. The development of the Domestic Church will become a recurring theme in my weekly bulletins.

I will update you on the findings of this study group and share what we have learned. How great would it be if we at Saint Mark, on the first Sunday of Advent, can declare 2021 a special year for the family and beat COVID once and for all!

19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 9, 2020

COVID-19 nos pide que nos adaptemos continuamente. En casi cinco meses ya hemos tratado toda una serie de circunstancias cambiantes. Es alucinante cómo una pieza tan pequeña de sustancia química ha sido capaz de poner el mundo al revés. Afortunadamente, nuestra parroquia está viva y podemos hacer los cambios que se necesitan para cooperar con los esfuerzos globales para controlar la pandemia. La organización de nuestras misas al aire libre ha sido una alegría y una bendición. Ha dado un nuevo espíritu a nuestra parroquia. También hemos aprendido a utilizar las diversas tecnologías que nos pueden conectar a través de Internet. Pero a pesar de este optimismo, también crece una conciencia de que tal vez necesitemos aprender a vivir con una presencia continua del virus en nuestra sociedad. Eso significa que tenemos que hacer que nuestra iglesia sea "a prueba de coronas". Si la vida parroquial ya no puede llevarse a cabo dentro de nuestras instalaciones, tenemos que encontrar una nueva y sostenible manera de vivir nuestra fe católica. Creo que esto también puede resultar ser una gran bendición. El lugar principal de nuestra tradición de fe siempre ha sido el hogar de los fieles. Recuerden que en el libro de éxodo Moisés va a la carpa de reunión, a cierta distancia del campamento de los israelitas. Cuando salía a rezar, todos los padres se paraban a la entrada de su propia tienda familiar. Al ver el pilar de la nube que bajaba en la carpa de la reunión, los padres se unían a Moisés en la adoración. Frente a su propia tienda. ¿No suena eso como algo que deberíamos volver a aprender? ¿Orar en casa con la Iglesia? El Concilio Vaticano II ha hablado de ello. El documento Lumen Gentium dice: La familia es, por así decirlo, la iglesia doméstica. En ella, los padres deben, por su palabra y ejemplo, ser los primeros predicadores de la fe para sus hijos. (LG 11) San Marcos está iniciando momentáneamente un grupo de estudio para aprender más acerca de lo que el Concilio quiso decir exactamente con esto, y cómo la Iglesia puede ayudar a las familias a lograrlo. El desarrollo de la Iglesia Doméstica se convertirá en un tema recurrente en mis boletines semanales. Les informaré sobre los resultados de este grupo de estudio y compartiré lo que hemos aprendido. ¡Qué grande sería si en San Marcos, el primer domingo de Adviento, pudiéramos declarar 2021 un año especial para la familia y vencer a COVID de una vez por todas!

ST. MARK DRIVE-IN MASS INSTRUCTIONS

General guidelines:

•Please remain in your vehicle for the duration of your stay at St. Mark.

You may only leave your vehicle to use the restroom or in case of emergency.

Currently, the only restroom available for use is the handicap restroom.

Children will not be allowed to go to the restroom unaccompanied by an adult.

Collection:

•Please enclose your offering in an envelope, preferably in the form of a check made out to St. Mark Church. Consider giving online at www.st-mark.net or using Text to Give, text your donation amount to the number (424) 370-1756 on your cell phone.

•The collection will be picked up by our ministers of hospitality at the normal time of the offertory hymn.

•They will approach each car wearing face masks and gloves and they will pick up your offering from the driver side only.

Communion:

•By lowering your car window(s), you are indicating that you would like to receive communion.

•The Priest and Eucharistic Minister, wearing a face mask, will come to each vehicle on both sides to distribute Holy Communion.

•In order to receive communion, you must have your face mask on. Additionally, we encourage you to sanitize your hands before the priest and eucharistic minister arrive at your vehicle.

•Communion will only be given on the hand, and to maintain social distancing, we ask that you stretch your arm out your window.

•Passing the Host to another passenger is not permitted.

•If you are wearing gloves, you must remove one to receive the Precious Host.

Departure:

•Departure from the parking lot will begin following the end of mass. The gates will remain closed until then.

•Follow the instructions of our ministers of hospitality who will direct you to exit through the Coeur D’ Alene Ave. gate or through the Garfield Ave. gate.

1 KGS 19:9A, 11-13A At the mountain of God, Horeb, Elijah came to a cave where he took shelter. Then the LORD said to him, “Go outside and stand on the mountain before the LORD; the LORD will be passing by.” A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the LORD— but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake— but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was fire— but the LORD was not in the fire. After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound. When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave.

MT 14:22-33

After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.”

Mt 14, 22-33

En aquel tiempo, inmediatamente después de la multiplicación de los panes, Jesús hizo que sus discípulos subieran a la barca y se dirigieran a la otra orilla, mientras él despedía a la gente. Después de despedirla, subió al monte a solas para orar. Llegada la noche, estaba él solo allí.

Entretanto, la barca iba ya muy lejos de la costa, y las olas la sacudían, porque el viento era contrario. A la madrugada, Jesús fue hacia ellos, caminando sobre el agua. Los discípulos, al verlo andar sobre el agua, se espantaron, y decían: “¡Es un fantasma!” Y daban gritos de terror. Pero Jesús les dijo enseguida: “Tranquilícense y no teman. Soy yo”.

Entonces le dijo Pedro: “Señor, si eres tú, mándame ir a ti caminando sobre el agua”. Jesús le contestó: “Ven”.
