Pastor’s Letter August 1/2 Dear Parish Family Last week I began to tell you about First Fruits, a program of automated giving and how it will become an option for Sacred Hearts parishioners this fall. There are many practical benefits to automated giving. It helps your church receive support even if you are away for a week. It levels the ups and downs of parish income and enables us to plan and better support our programs. It is simpler and more secure that writing checks or remembering envelopes each week. But there is also a spiritual benefit to this new way of giving. It can help make our faith and our church a priority! You might be a little surprised to hear words like faith, spirituality, and automated giving all in the same sentence. We call our new program First Fruits because in the bible, a great sign of gratitude is the willingness to give to God the first fruits of our labor. If you are reading this bulletin, I am sure that your faith and the ministries of your church are one of the important things in your life. I know, too, that there are many important things in life that need your support. Your family, the education and care for your children, food and healthcare are just a few of your responsibilities. Stewardship toward your church never means neglecting these things! But stewardship does mean including your spiritual commitments among the important things in your life. It is not easy to keep priorities. Life can be hectic, stressful, and demanding. It is easy for generosity to your parish to be left to chance. There was a survey recently which found that many Catholics make their decision about what to give to their church at the last moment when the collection is about to be taken. In our own parish we know that planned giving is effective because over 80% of our collection each week is provided by envelope users and those who contribute by check. I know that many others make significant contributions but the benefits of planned giving are undeniable. So let’s take another look on the thinking behind automated giving. Think about how many important things in life depend on automation. Social security benefits and most people’s salary are paid by direct deposit. Mortgages, loans, school tuitions, are more and more often transferred electronically. These things are important, too important to leave to chance. Jesus often praised wise stewards for using the things of the world to benefit the things that belong to God. Planned giving, automated giving, can help us make our faith and our religious commitment a priority. I am planning to become a First Fruits participant myself. Our parish and the ministries of our church are very important to me. I want this to be shown not only in my work but also in my own generosity. I hope that you will find this new program helpful to you. Sincerely yours in Christ,
Rev. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor

vents Planning for Our Future—Are you interested? This fall our diocese, in conjunction with St. John’s University, will be
offering a series of meetings for East End parishes to help us plan for the
future. The information to be discussed includes changes in
demographics, economics, and patterns of church attendance, generosity,
and activity. I think this is an excellent opportunity. The sessions are
offered through our diocesan planning office and will be free to the parish
and participants. For us to take part we would need to have at least 8
people willing to participate. Dates and times for the meetings are not set
yet.
If you would like to be part of this please send an email about your interest to Fr. Mike:
Please respond by August 16.
Summer Appeal—Thank you for your generosity!
Our summer appeal is an important source of support for our community, especially
through the long winter months. I am happy to report that as of July 26th our
appeal has reached almost $40,000.00 This is one of the most generous summer
appeals ever. With may new events planned for Sacred Hearts I am so grateful for all
those who took part. It is not to late to make a summer appeal donation. Envelopes
are in the back of our church or donations can be sent to the rectory.
Saint Rosalie's Catholic Church in Hampton Bays will be
sponsoring Sundays at Seven and Sacred Music Wednesdays for the month of August.

“Youth Ministry changed my life. I would not be the same person without Youth Ministry; it molded me. I tell everyone the way to be the best you can be is to give yourself fully to your Faith and soak up everything you can from your Par-ish Youth Ministry experience,” shared Joseph .
More than 6,000 young people participate in Youth Ministry Programs in our Diocese.
The Catholic Ministries Appeal is also important for so many other ministries and programs that
help our children grow in our faith, including religious education programs for more than 100,000 of
our young people in public schools as well as Campus and young adult ministry programs.
Your support helps to inspire our young people to live and love their faith.
Please know that I thank you most sincerely for your consideration of this special request to make a
gift to the 2015 Catholic Ministries Appeal. Please know that no gift is too small and every gift
makes a difference in the lives of our young people.
Stewardship Happenings and Needs One of the great ways that people support our parish is by donating skilled work. Just this past
week J Andreassi and Tony Tuscano arranged to reset and point the front steps of our
church. Many of you noticed that a couple of steps had become loose. Their team did the work.
Nick Feldmann of Eldor and Bob Sullivan of Sullivan Electric have done a super job of
installing new lighting, running cables, and fixing some electrical problems. Earlier this month Ed
Corrigan helped us with some landscaping needs around our rectory. Thanks to all! These are
just a few of the practical needs of our church provided by local families and businesses.
Here are some things we need now:
Concrete Work: There is a badly damaged apron in front of the rectory garage (12” x 50”). It needs to be removed, regraded, and new concrete poured. If you are able to help us with this project please contact Fr. Mike at the rectory.
A Note from Religious Education Director :

Often we hear from the secular culture surrounding us that many Pro-Life

Did you know... there are tens of thousands of women who have expressed their
solidarity with Pro-Life thought, and with the teachings of the Catholic Church
in regard to these issues --

"War destroys. And we must cry out for peace. Peace sometimes gives the idea of stillness, but it is never stillness. It is always an active peace. I think that everyone must be committed in the matter of peace, to do everything that they can, what I can do from here. Peace is the language we must speak." - Pope Francis

El Papa Francisco Habla con los Jóvenes - Jesús… nos muestra un camino que es vida. Él es la gran prueba de esto. Es su manera de vivir la vida, la amistad, la relación con su Padre. Y es a lo que nos invita. A sentirnos hijos. Hijos amados. Él no te vende humo.
