Jaguar Journal DuJardin Elementary School

From the Principal, During our Early Release/School Improvement session on Wednesday afternoon K-5 teachers worked on Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) successes and challenges so far this school year, K-8 articulation regarding the scope and sequence of the STEMscopes science program, and the ordering of any necessary science resources and materials. Fine arts and support services team members worked on individual plans that align with school improvement goals. This time provided each month to improve teaching and learning in D13 and at DuJardin School is greatly appreciated and makes a big difference in our professional development as a staff.

Thanks to all the families that gave to our Toys for Tots collection and/or our Giving Twee! Your generosity is very much appreciated and will bring happiness to others this holiday season. Please see the last page for a picture.

Enjoy the winter break between December 19th and January 2nd – a special time to spend with family and friends, time to relax, time to get away from the normal routines for a couple of weeks, and time to reflect and be thankful for all we have! For those of you traveling over the winter break, have a safe trip. Wishing you and your family Happy Holidays and a Prosperous New Year! We look forward to seeing all of the students on January 3rd, 2017!!

Please take a moment and check the lost and found in the front lobby if you are looking for any “lost” or “missing” items like hats, gloves, sweaters, scarves, jackets, lunch bags, or mittens. These items will be donated to a worthy cause over break.

Attention parents: the holidays are almost here, and that means your child is about to have two weeks off from school! While he or she might be ready to toss that backpack in the closet and forget about school for a time, here are a few suggestions for some fun and engaging alternatives to consider during winter break:

1. Take trips to the library. Call your local library to see what programs they have for children who are off from school such as arts and crafts classes or enrichment programs. Holiday break is also the perfect time for your child to pick out some fun reading material, whether that’s a book about penguins and the North Pole, or the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book. If you’re the parent of a tween or teen, try selecting a book that both of you can read and scheduling a "book club" date to discuss it over ice cream or lunch when you’re finished.

2. Bake holiday treats. Search for tasty cookie or pastry recipes online together and let your child take charge in the kitchen, reading the recipe instructions aloud and measuring the ingredients. Then, bag up those holiday goodies for family, friends or neighbors, and have your child get out a ruler to measure and cut 18-inch ribbons to tie the gift baggies closed. Have your child cut small cards out of construction paper and write holiday greetings inside.

3. Explore your town’s museums and other tourist sites. What is your child interested in these days - Space? Art? American History? Why not spend an afternoon or evening together at a local nature and science museum, art museum or history museum? For younger children, be sure to check out children’s museums and their holiday programs for kids and families. Call the local Chamber of Commerce or community (or visitor’s) center to investigate tours at interesting organizations or factories, or walking or bus tours in your town’s downtown area. Your child might enjoy discovering something new about the place you live.

4. Write holiday greetings and thank-you notes. Recruit your child to help you create homemade holiday cards for family and friends, which will allow him or her to practice penmanship, grammar and spelling. When the holidays are over, why not brew up some hot chocolate and make a day of writing thank-you notes for any gifts received?

5. Play board and card games. Not only are games a wonderful way to deter boredom, many games can help your child fine-tune his or her math, reading and critical thinking skills. Schedule a few family (or friend) game nights, and let your child choose the game. Try word board games such as Scrabble or Balderdash, logic games such as chess or checkers, or games that incorporate math, such as Monopoly, UNO or High/Low.

“What happened to my son?” “To our family?” “What did I do wrong?” At this very special GPS event, David Sheff will reflect on these heart-rending questions as he shares the desperation of his son Nic's addiction and the impact on their family. Based on his international best-selling memoir, “Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey through His Son's Addiction”, Sheff’s honest reflection, and wisdom make for a powerful evening all will benefit from. It is

the story of an athlete and honor student, his descent into addiction and the promise of recovery in rehab. Sheff's preoccupation with Nic became an addiction in itself, and the obsessive worry and stress took a tremendous toll. But as a journalist, he instinctively researched every avenue of treatment that might save his son and refused to give up on Nic. Here is a presentation that brings immediacy to the emotional rollercoaster of loving a child who seems beyond help. From the early warning signs, to denial, to fear, to grief, to hope, this is a story of unwavering parental love. David Sheff is also the award winning author of, “Clean: Overcoming Addiction and Ending America’s Greatest Tragedy”, which argues drug use is a preventable, treatable

disease and not a moral failing. His ongoing research in psychology, neuroscience, medicine, and examination of the science of addiction earned him a place on Time magazine's list of the world's most influential people.
