From the Principal,From the Principal,From the Principal,From the Principal, Yesterday during our school improvement early release time district teachers met at Westfield and were involved in professional development regarding 21st Century lesson design and student learning. Teachers used their chromebooks and other materials for instructional planning. Fine arts and Physical Education teachers met to continue work on curriculum integration of the new Fine Arts/Enhanced PE Standards and related technology, and Special Education teachers continued to work on special services department initiatives at the district office. Please note that there will not be a Jaguar Journal going home the week of November 23rd. School will not be in session at all next week due to Parent-Teacher Conferences and the Thanksgiving holiday break. Enjoy your time with family and friends during the break. For those families traveling over the Thanksgiving holiday have a safe and enjoyable trip. Whatever your plans are for the next week, have a terrific break and remember we all have a great deal to be thankful for! Report cards for K through 5th grade students will be sent home on Friday, November 20th. We look forward to seeing parents next week during Parent-Teacher Conferences. On your way down to your conference please stop by the lobby for a cup of coffee if you’d like. This year Parent/Teacher surveys will be emailed to you for you to complete. We always appreciate your feedback and any suggestions you may have to better serve you and your child. Here are a few suggestions to review while preparing for your conference:

First, assemble relevant materials including any correspondence between the classroom and home that you think necessary about discussing your child’s progress.

Next, talk to your child before the conference, share with your child why the conference is taking place and the purpose of the conference.

Also, remember to discuss the MAP goal sheet for both reading and math with the teacher and how you can support these goals at home.

Finally, prepare a list of questions ahead of time and write them down so you can remember what to ask during the conference. The best way to maximize your conference time is to be prepared.

See the attached articles, “Having Successful Parent-Teacher Conferences,” and “A Guide for Parents from ‘TeachersAndFamilies.com’” for additional suggestions and information about parent-teacher conferences.

You know your child needs a strong vocabulary to do well in

reading and writing. But did you know that vocabulary is

important in math, science, and social studies, too? Help her

explore words in every subject with these three ideas:

1. Find words. Whenever your youngster reads, suggest that she

look for words related to school subjects. She might find science

words like “metamorphosis” in a comic book, “sodium” in an

advertisement, and “precipitation” in a weather report. Seeing how the words are used in

real life will help her recognize and understand them in her textbooks.

2. Use words! Help your child find reasons to say her vocabulary words aloud. If she’s

studying state history, you might visit a state park and talk to a ranger. (“What tribes are

native to this area?”) Or if she’s learning about economics, she can practice the terms while

shopping. (“There must be a high demand for these sweaters—they need to increase their

supply in my size.”) When she reads a textbook, her firsthand experiences will help her

identify with the vocabulary words.

3. Play with words! Games can make words a permanent part of your child’s vocabulary.

Have someone pick a letter of the alphabet and a school subject, and set a timer for three

minutes. Race to list terms that begin with the chosen letter. If you picked “c” and math,

you could write “centimeter” and “calculate.” The winner is the person with the most words

that no one else has.

Words in Every Subject

Reading Aloud

What activity builds family bonds and reading skills? Reading aloud to your youngster!

Consider these suggestions:

Bedtime stories are fun and relaxing at any age. Try reading a chapter a night from a

novel. Afterward, ask your child what he thinks will happen tomorrow. He’ll practice

making predictions and get excited about the next chapter.

Boost your youngster’s comprehension skills with poetry. Borrow a volume or two

from the library. Take turns reading poems to each other and discussing what you think

each one is about.

Suggest that your child check out a how-to book that interests him. Have him choose

a project (building a toy, doing a craft). Then, read the instructions aloud to him as he

works.

Anxiety in Children

Did you know that anxiety disorders affect one in eight children? Research shows

that untreated children with anxiety disorders are at higher risk to perform poorly

in school, miss out on important social experiences, and engage in substance

abuse.

Tips for Parents and Caregivers

Here are things you can do at home to help your child manage his or her anxiety:

• Pay attention to your child’s feelings.

• Stay calm when your child becomes anxious about a situation or event.

• Recognize and praise small accomplishments.

• Don’t punish mistakes or lack of progress.

• Be flexible and try to maintain a normal routine.

• Modify expectations during stressful periods.

• Plan for transitions (For example, allow extra time in the morning if getting to

school is difficult).

Expectations of your child

It's important that you have the same expectations of your anxious child that you would of another child (to go to birthday parties, make decisions, talk to adults). However, understand that the pace will need to be slower and there is a process involved in meeting this end goal. You can help your child break down big tasks into smaller steps that your child can accomplish (first go to the party with your child and agree to stay as long as your child is interacting with others, next time stay for the first half hour). You can help role-play or act out possible ways your child could handle a difficult situation. Saying it out loud makes kids more confident and more likely to try the strategy when your child is alone.

Build your child's personal strength

It's important to praise your child for facing challenges, trying something new or brave behavior. Some children like big loud exuberant praises, others like a quiet pat on the back. There is a lot you can do to help build your child's competence. Search to find avenues where your child can show he is good at something (music, art, sports). Also be sure your child has jobs around the house that show your child is contributing to the family.

Page 19: 15 Nov. 19 · You know your child needs a strong vocabulary to do well in reading and writing. But did you know that vocabulary is important in math, science, and social studies,

Letting your child learn to do things on his/her ow n

While tempting, it is best not to take over or do it for your child. While this might help your child feel better right now, the message your child is getting is that you don't believe your child can do it. Then your child will start to think the same way about him or herself. Try not to get caught continually reassuring your child that everything will be okay. Teach your child to answer his/her own questions and provide the reassurance him/herself. You can model how you think through and respond to your child's questions.

Helping your child handle his own feelings

It is okay to let your child experience some anxiety. Your child needs to know that anxiety is not dangerous but something your child can cope with. You can let your child know all feelings are okay and it is all right to say what you feel. Anxious children sometimes have a hard time expressing strong emotions like anger or sadness because they are afraid people will be angry with them. It's okay to take time for yourself even if your child wants to be with you at all times. You are modeling for your child that everyone needs some time to themselves.

Passing on your fears

Try to keep your fears to yourself and as best you can present a positive or at least neutral description of a situation. Let them know that it is safe to explore. It is not helpful to laugh or minimize your child's fear. But humor does help one deal with the world, so show your child how to laugh at life's absurdities and mistakes.

Working together as parents

It is important to work with your spouse to have an agreed upon way of handling your child's anxiety that you both feel comfortable with. It is very important that one parent not be "too easy" because the other parent "pushes your child too much." This is very confusing for your child who does not know what to count on.

Consequences

Don't confuse anxiety with other types of inappropriate behavior. It is very important to set both expectations and have limits and consequences for inappropriate behavior. Parents who have reasonable expectations of their children and clear and consistent limits and consequences for behavior along with love and acceptance have the most competent, self- confident and happy children.
