REFLECTION Mother’s Day Today we are celebrating Mother’s Day. This can bring up all kinds of emotions for us: perhaps we are missing our mothers, perhaps we had a difficult or complicated relationship with her, perhaps we live too far away to share today with her. And what about the women of the congregation who are mothers – perhaps you’ve had good relationships with your children, perhaps you’ve had difficult ones. Perhaps you wish you’d had children but that never happened for you, or perhaps you had a miscarriage, and will never know that child until you meet in Heaven. Perhaps you are a mother when you never expected to be – this can be both joyful and bittersweet. Perhaps you are a woman who never wanted children and so you stay as far away from this celebration as you can. And, what about being a stepmother, or a stepdaughter, or even no biological or marriage relationship, but simply an intergenerational close friendship? Mother’s Day can be full of emotion. And, of course, women can’t be mothers without there also being a father, however brief or long-term. But fathers don’t seem to be celebrated the same as mothers do on Mother’s Day, so there’s a whole load of emotion for men on Mother’s Day, too, and not just to do with their own mothers. If we believe the card companies, we’d think that humanity only thinks about their mothers with saccharine sweetness, but we know that’s not true. Motherhood (like fatherhood) can be extremely rewarding, but it can also be the most frustrating thing you’ve ever experienced in your life. Like life in general, there are no guarantees with motherhood. If you celebrate, however you celebrate today, may your celebration be one of joy and healing, whether you are showing love to your mother, or receiving it as one (or a father).

Eucharist: 8.30am The service begins on page 119 of the Prayer Book HYMNS: 164 The great love of God God, as with silent hearts (see next page) 538 Feed us now, Bread of life 161 Tell out, my soul Recessional 768 Praise God

PSALM: 23 (Page 243) PRAYER OF THE DAY: Gracious God, you sent Jesus, the good shepherd, to gather us together: may we not wander from his flock, but follow wherever he leads us, listening for his voice and staying near him, until we are safely in your fold, to live with you for ever; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. PRAYER FOR THE WOMEN OF THE PARISH: Lord Jesus Christ, bless all who worship in this our church of St Christopher’s. Grant that we may delight to serve you in our hearts and in our lives. With your love inspire us; by your spirit guide us; in your mercy keep us now and always. Amen

GRADUAL HYMN: God! As with silent hearts God! As with silent hearts we bring to mind how hate and war diminish humankind, we pause - and seek in worship to increase our knowledge of the things that make for peace. Hallow our will as humbly we recall the lives of those who gave and give their all. We thank you, Lord, for women, children, men who seek to serve in love, today as then. Give us deep faith to comfort those who mourn, high hope to share with all the newly born, strong love in our pursuit of human worth: 'lest we forget' the future of this earth. So, Prince of Peace, disarm our trust in power, teach us to coax the plant of peace to flower. May we, impassioned by your living Word, remember forward to a world restored.

If you would like special prayers for yourself or someone else we invite you to remain at the altar rail after Communion.

FIRST READING: Acts 9.36-43 36Now in Joppa there was a disciple whose name was Tabitha, which in Greek is Dorcas. She was devoted to good works and acts of charity.37At that time she became ill and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in a room upstairs. 38Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, who heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him with the

request, “Please come to us without delay.” 39So Peter got up and went with them; and when he arrived, they took him to the room upstairs. All the widows stood beside him, weeping and showing tunics and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was with them. 40Peter put all of them outside, and then he knelt down and prayed. He turned to the body and said, “Tabitha, get up.” Then she opened her eyes, and seeing Peter, she sat up. 41He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then calling the saints and widows, he showed her to be alive. 42This became known throughout Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. 43Meanwhile he stayed in Joppa for some time with a certain Simon, a tanner. For the Word of the Lord: Thanks be to God SECOND READING: Revelation 7.9-17

9After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. 10They cried out in a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!” 11And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12singing, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.” 13Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?” 14I said to him, “Sir, you are the one that knows.” Then he said to me, “These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15For this reason they are before the

throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. 16They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; 17for the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” For the Word of the Lord: Thanks be to God THE GOSPEL of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. John (John 10.22-30) Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ 22At that time the festival of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, 23and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. 24So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.” 25Jesus answered, “I have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name testify to me; 26but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. 27My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. 28I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. 29What my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of the Father’s hand. 30The Father and I are one.” For the Gospel of the Lord: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

GARAGE SALE -Despite the gloomy weather forecast for last weekend’s Garage Sale, we were blessed with two lovely days. We raised a total of $ 6,351, details as follows: Door $2,616 (Charles, Chris, Mike

W. & helpers) Jewellery $ 915 (Pat, Fina & helpers) Cakes, devonshire teas $ 777 (Glenys, Diana & helpers) Plants $ 1,500 (Helen, Colin, Chris G. & helpers) Raffle $ 543 (Carolyn & helpers) TOTAL $ 6,351 Many thanks to: Carolyn & Julie M (raffle prizes), Pat (Anglicare pickup), Diana & priest Melanie (advertising), helpers distributing the leaflets, setup & clean-up (Terry, Karen, Paul, Jackie, Geoff, Caroline W. Shirley & helpers). A real team effort which led to a successful result. Jackie (non- parishioner) organised her two sons Ben (12) and William (10) to help with the clean-up as part of a school project to do community work and they were willing helpers. Already I’ve been asked by parishioners & countless members of the public when the next garage sale is on, which is an indication of the enormous goodwill this event has generated over the years, proving it is both our major fundraising and community event. My thanks to all who were involved. If I’ve missed

acknowledging a participant, my sincere apologies. Neville. PS. Many thanks also to you, Neville. Another great effort. Stories from the Garage Sale -Every Garage Sale produces its share of drama. Two young boys helped with the clean-up. All the boxes were packed and covered, when one of the young boys realised his precious new back pack had disappeared. Needless to say, the prospect of searching

through many packed boxes was not something we were looking forward to at the end of a tiring weekend. Luckily, we were spared the task when Jacqui produced the missing back pack. She had found the bag, setting it aside for safekeeping thinking it must belong to someone. One very relieved young man went home with his back pack and a group of tired workers were spared further searching. Thank-you to eagle -eyed and thoughtful Jacqui and all the other helpers. (Fran) The 2019 Annual Meeting of Parishioners will take place on Sunday 9 June at 11am. There will be just one Service that morning at 9.30am followed by the Annual Meeting of Parishioners at 11am. There will be more detailed information printed in the Bulletin on 19 May. However, for now, we want to remind those of you who will need to write a report for the Annual Meeting that they will need to be emailed or given to Geoff Croxton who is compiling the Booklet of papers and reports by Sunday 19 May at 5pm. It will be a help if reports can be typed and emailed to Geoff ([email protected]). Handwritten reports are acceptable if you do not have a computer. Reports are required from: Rector, Wardens, Treasurer, Auditor and Team Leaders and we usually have brief reports from: the Men's Fellowship, the Women’s Fellowship, the Netball Club, Book Club, Sunday Morning Tea Group, the Bush Church Aid Secretary, the Gardeners, the Flower and Brass Cleaning Ladies, mainly music, Little Angels Playgroup, Table Tennis Club, and Card Club. (Note most of these reports were presented last month to the parish council so may only need checking or slight updating before submitting – Fran) Wednesday Communion 10am – all are welcome to attend, and we always have a decent morning tea afterwards. Rona Ogier – has now moved into an Aegis Nursing Home.
