Jenny Trapp Says Good-By To Milford Rotary Club. The Milford Rotary had a happy and sadluncheon in June when Exchange Student Jenny Trapp dined with Club members to share herexperiences over the past school year and to express her thanks to the Club for its sponsorshipduring her sophomore year as an exchange student at Milford High School. Jenny returned toher home country of Germany in early July. Jenny also expressed her thanks to her host fami-lies who attended the dinner as guest of Rotary. From left: Gary McMichael and Vicki Nelsen,

Home From Chile by Patrick ReimonnMy trip began in August 2012, when I boarded a plane in Boston

and arrived, 21 hours later, in Conception Airport, in the south ofChile. Other exchange students also arrived, some from the UnitedStates, and others from Germany, Denmark, and Sweden. We weremet by Rotary member volunteers and were given an orientation tothe culture and guidelines of the exchange program. The nextmorning, our host families came to pick us up. My host parents, aloving and young couple, owned a hardware and electronics storeand were eager to teach me Chilean customs, practices, and lan-guage. I must say, I don't think Rotary could have selected a betterfamily for me. Throughout the year I learned to love them and Iknew, and still know, that they will always be my beloved Chileanfamily.

During my first week in Chile, I started attending the local highschool. Of course, everything was taught in Spanish and it soonbecame clear that my meager high school Spanish skills neededimprovement. The constant need to translate left me surprisingly tired, and I had some days of home-sickness and had to fight my way through some initial “culture-shock.” But, the food in Chile wasexcellent and I was proud to have some friends by October.

Some of the most exciting parts of my year-long exchange were the trips we took as Rotary students. In November, the students in my Rotary District took a trip to Patagonia, in the farthest southernregions of South America. We saw penguin breeding grounds, German colonial cities, and breath-tak-ing national parks filled with snow-covered mountains, glaciers, sea lions, and the world famous“Torres del Paine” National Park.

In May, our group also flew to Easter Island, a remote island five hours flying time west of Chile inthe middle of the Pacific Ocean. A relaxed and mysterious place, Easter Island is a tropical paradisewith warm and clear ocean water, a gorgeous white sand beach, and, of course, the famous EasterIsland heads, known as Moai. Easter Island was truly unforgettable.

A truly incredible year, my experience as a Rotary Youth Exchange Student changed my life. I can nowspeak fluent Spanish and I had the opportunity to see the world from a new perspective. Currently, Iam a senior at Hopkinton High School, and plan to study engineering at The University ofMassachusetts . I will be forever grateful to the Rotary Club of Milford for enabling me to have thiswonderful year.
