Saint Joseph Church Mission Statement

We have been called together as disciples of the Lord as St. Joseph Parish. We are united with brothers and sisters far and near in the

message and mission of Jesus Christ. As a parish family we will witness to God’s love and presence through our celebration of the sacraments, the proclamation of

God’s Word , the formation of all into discipleship and our service to others.

We are a people who are deeply Eucharistic which strengthens us for the mission that has been entrusted to us. We will use all of the God-given gifts to show that we are eager to welcome the

stranger, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless and comfort the bereaved.

GIVE GOD THE GLORY A curious feature of the first half of Mark’s Gospel is the pattern of Jesus working a miracle, then telling the recipient of the miracle to keep still about it. Many theo-ries have been offered: Mark is setting the stage for the great “secret” revealed when Peter will proclaim Jesus the Messiah at Caesarea Philippi; more skeptical commenta-tors offer that Jesus, fully aware of human nature, knew that the way to spread the news was to tell people to keep it secret. The insight into this secret-keeping that serves us well, however, is that Jesus was initiating his public ministry according to the pattern that Paul describes. He was doing it for the glory of God—not for his own bene-fit, but for that of all. Paul would later write in Philippians that Jesus “humbled” himself to become like us. And we see this humility at work in today’s healing of the leper. Jesus is trying to reveal the presence of God’s reign among the people, not so that he himself might receive the glory, but so that God would be glorified through him. Imitating this pattern, which Paul encourages the Jewish and Greek Christian factions in Corinth to do, still serves us well today.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The leper will dwell apart, making an abode outside the camp (Leviticus 13:1-2, 44-46). Psalm — I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation (Psalm 32). Second Reading — Do everything for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31 — 11:1). Gospel — The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean (Mark 1:40-45).

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today’s Gospel centers on the plight of a leper and Jesus’ response of healing. In Hawaii, the bacterium that causes leprosy probably entered from China in the mid-1800s, and the native islanders were susceptible to the dreaded disease. In 1866, the government literally dumped the sufferers on a remote and virtually inaccessible island peninsula with towering cliffs. Thrown off ships into the sea, the sick people were told to swim for the beach and head for caves, and for seven years the only supplies were similarly cast into the sea to drift ashore. It was then, 1873, that a thirty-three-year-old Belgian priest, Damien de Veuster, went voluntarily to Kalaupapa. Before long, he cajoled the government into funding his mission and its hospital, built a village with proper homes and sanitation, and recruited Mother Marianne Cope to bring sisters from Syracuse, New York, to nurse the sick. Damien, who even-tually died of leprosy, has been canonized, and Mother Marianne as well. Although leprosy has been curable since the 1940s, today a few patients remain in their lifelong home, now a national historic site. The peninsula is still utterly isolated from the outside world, and the speed limit for the few cars there is 5 mph since there’s nowhere to go! The hos-pital is still well-staffed and equipped, but access is regu-lated and visitors must take an official tour, often involv-ing a descent down the cliffs by “Molakai mule.” There are few places on earth that evoke the healing power of Jesus, or our call to follow the Healer, more than Da-mien’s beloved island mission.

A NOTE FROM THE PARISH OFFICE:

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Esta semana recordamos a san Valentín, obispo y mártir.

SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORD. – FEBRUARY 14, 2018 In this week we should use the Gospel of St. Mark to prepare for the beginning of Lent. The scriptures recreate, with the necessity of healing the image of leprosy that appears in the first reading of the gospel. Leprosy is a disease that takes people away, changes their appearance, produces a lot of pain for a person and destroys their self-esteem in front of others. This aspect can also be applied to the whole entire community. The people of God during the time of Moses could be touched by the leprosy of desperation for other gods, the sores which cause instability of leaving Egypt and going into the wilderness, or the shame of betrayal to Yah-weh and his commandments. This is only healed with the acceptance of one true God. The Gospel of St. Mark shows us that the people during the time of Jesus suffered a differ-ent type of leprosy; political, economical and moral. It is only through Jesus Christ that all these kinds of leprosies in us: envy, greed, jealousy, hatred, adultery and more, will then disappear with the holy power of redemption that comes through him; with the sacrifice of the Lamb of God. During this time as we are approaching Lent, we should rec-ognize what kind of leprosy is in our own lives and ask Jesus to touch us and cleanse us if it is his will. There could be an illness in our friendship with him, difficulties which drive our families away from God, miscommunication with our wife, husband, children and relatives, or there is a personal relationship that destroys our relationship with God. The Church now is a good time for us to prepare to be cured, to leave our sores in the hands of Jesus. He is the only One who with his love, compassion and mercy can bring us back to experience health. Let us open our hearts for his healing. Fr. John

P. John
