The BC sports medicine staff tends to the health care needs of some750 student-athletes in 31 varsity sports. Services include on-site firstaid, evaluation and treatment of all athletic-related injuries, as well as

full rehabilitation therapy. Both surgical and non-surgical injuries are reha-bilitated within the department, bringing student-athletes back to full par-ticipation.

BC student-athletes receive the finest medical care available for the pre-vention, diagnosis and treatment of athletic injuries. Bert Lenz, assistantdirector of sports medicine for Olympic sports, oversees the training roomoperation in Conte Forum and serves as the head athletic trainer for thehockey team.

Lenz is assisted by a staff of three full-time athletic trainers, all of whomare certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) andlicensed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Six resident trainers, alsocertified and licensed and recent graduates of strenuous athletic trainingcurricula, support the full-time staff.

Overseen by Dr. Thomas Nary, head team physician and director of healthservices, five team physicians serve as the medical corps for the SportsMedicine department. These include two orthopedic surgeons, an internist,a general practitioner and a sports medicine/emergency medicine physician.Other specialists are on call for consultation on the care and treatment ofinjuries, while the medical staff confers as needed with numerous medicalspecialists in the greater Boston area.

The Sports Medicine facilities in Conte Forum occupy approximately3,000 square feet. They include a rehabilitation area containing equipmentused for development of strength, balance, reflexes and muscular coordina-tion along with a LIDO isokinetic rehabilitation and testing machine, whirlpools, physician exam rooms and offices, as well as a separate therapyarea containing the latest in technical equipment for treatment of injuries.

Cushing Hall, adjacent to Conte Forum, houses Student Health Services, which provides daily care for all students through its physician and nursingstaffs. BC Health Services is available around the clock for the managementof general health concerns, overnight observation and post-operative care.

St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, a short two-mile drive from campus, hous-es the offices of both orthopedic surgeons. This allows the athletic trainingstaff easy access to hospital facilities for emergency care and diagnostic tests.

Learning Resources

Boston College recognizes the demands of academics and athletics, and acknowledges that students must be disciplined in their studyhabits to succeed in the classroom. The University’s Office of

Learning Resources for Student-Athletes provides academic, personal, andsocial support services to all varsity student-athletes with the goal thateach student-athlete will be provided a fair opportunity to achieve his orher potential of academic, social, spiritual and personal development.

In April 2005, Learning Resources moved into its new home in YawkeyCenter. Dr. Ferna Phillips, director, leads a professional staff of six and atutorial staff consisting of 35 graduate and undergraduate students.

Learning Resources offers academic counseling, developmental andsupplemental instruction as well as tutorial services to help its student-athletes reach their maximum potential in the classroom.

The academic counselors and other support staff members providemuch-needed guidance and direction to student-athletes by monitoringtheir academic progress, supporting their academic success in the class-room by promoting self advocacy as well as articulating concerns to faculty, staff and administrators. The staff promotes, recognizes and rewards scholar-ship and maintains an interdisciplinary approach to providing services.

“Many college athletics programs use the term ‘student-athlete,’ but we truly back it up here at BostonCollege. We win national championships on the ice andin the classroom. Our student-athletes are at the veryheart of our athletics program.”

- Director of Athletics Gene DeFilippo

Murphy Family Study Center

The study center offers an integrated learning environment for the student-athletes. They can elect to havea quiet space in which to work or join a study group as well as participate in “one to one” tutor relation-ships. Student-athletes can and do participate in structured study hour programs sponsored with the cen-

ter. The Center offers both Mac and PC computers for use by the student-athletes as well as the opportunity tobring their own laptop to use in our completely wireless environment. The Center serves as the primary tutori-al area for Learning Resources and offers student-athletes an easy, accessible area, close to the athletic facilitiesin which to study.

children through the Pen Pal program. In May, the school children getthe opportunity to meet with their pen pals at the annual picnic inAlumni Stadium.

BC student-athletes also visit area hospitals and schools throughoutthe course of the year.
