  • Meet karen leeNEW Teen Coordinator

i have loved books and stories for as long as i can remember. As a teacher, i had the privilege of connecting students with books that excited, scared, puzzled, educated, and sometimes annoyed them. Books that made them think.

i am excited for the opportunity to explore the worlds of literature and culture with the Teen patrons of The Albert Wisner Public Library as well as continuing to work with our youngest population. i look forward to planning many entertaining, delicious, crafty, informative, and just plain fun activities.

The Albert Wisner Public Library Foundation is delighted to announce and congratulate the recipients of its 13th annual college scholarship essay competition. All three are seniors at Warwick Valley high School: Ashley Emanuel, Abigail Gurvich and Paige Kent. They wrote on the assigned topic Indicate a character in a fictional book or an actual historical figure who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence. Ashley, who is bound for Boston College to pursue international studies and pre-law; Abigail, who plans to study biology and creative writing at SUNy New Paltz; and Paige, who is headed to Union College in Schenectady, Ny to study biomedical engineering, will each receive $1,000 toward their college tuition.

Warwick residents and generous Library supporters Glenn P. and Susan D. Dickes have offered two scholarships since the inception of the competition. C. hope Arber added a third scholarship in 2012. The competition is open to all college-bound high school seniors who reside in the Warwick Valley Central School District, regardless of which school they attend and including home-schooled students. Next year’s essay topic will be announced in January 2020.

Good luck, Ashley, Abigail and Paige!

On August 16th, teams will meet in the AWPL Community Room to match wits in a trivia contest to see who can re-member the most details about the books.Players who compete in our August battle can subsequently represent AWPL at the RCLS Teen Battle of the Books Region-al Championships on September 8th.
