Play it safe this Halloween with these simple trick-or-treating tips.
• Never trick-or-treat alone, and always stay in familiar neighborhoods.
• Carry a flashlight, and wear a watch you can read in the dark to obey your curfew.
• Make sure your shoes fit properly, and that your costume doesn’t drag on the ground.
• Make sure swords and other props are flexible, and avoid wearing a mask while walking.
• Wear bright or reflective clothing, adding reflective tape if necessary.
• Approach only houses that are lit, and don’t cut across yards or driveways.
• Stay away from pets. Even pets you know may not recognize you in costume.
Gaps in your coverage? Now that’s scary!
But don’t be afraid, we’ll help you do a double check.

Hudson High School Teacher Inspires Student to Help
OthersHudson High School has been
well known across the region for their service learning proj-ects. Service learning projects inspire students to become more involved in their community and also create a stronger sense of belonging to a larger group of people. Last school year one stu-dent in the Contemporary World Affairs class was inspired by her teacher to put her service learn-ing project into action.
Hudson High School‘s Sean Flaherty teaches the
Contemporary World Affairs class. Part of the class requires students to research members of government at any level, learn their positions on various issues, and then write to that govern-ment official with an idea or opinion supported by factual data. One student took the let-ter writing to a higher level. Meghan Collins, who is now in 9th grade, wrote a letter to the Superintendent, Dr. Jodi Fortuna with her idea to provide school supplies to Hudson High School students in need. While most students stopped after writing the single letter, Meghan persevered in her dedication towards bring-ing this project to fruition.
“Meghan is a highly motivated young lady who exemplifies the qualities we want in students and she took this further on her own initiative.” said Mr. Flaherty.
Meghan started working on organizing the drive last school year and named it the Supplies for Success drive. The collecting of supplies ran from September 1-10. The drive was so success-ful that Meghan will run anoth-er Supplies for Success drive at Hudson High School in the spring. She also is working on bringing this program to the school where her mother works as they too have students in need of school supplies.
Meghan learned many life lesson skills throughout the Supplies for Success drive. The first was patience. According to Meghan, this skill came in handy when few students donated at first. She kept promoting the drive and soon she says, every-one wanted to donate. “This skill will most definitely be useful in the future, especially when it comes to working with other people.” stated Meghan. She also learned the importance of being discrete about personal informa-tion. She encountered students who didn’t want to admit that they could not afford to pur-chase pencils or back-to-school items of good quality. Meghan said that she is the type of per-son to speak up for others when they are in need or trouble. She realized that not everybody has the ability to advocate for them-selves and offered her discretion. “I am proud to have learned to be discrete and patient, both very good skills for the future.” Meghan Collins.
“I am very proud of Meghan
for taking this initiative and pleased to see such an impor-tant community service project develop as a result of one of our social sciences courses. Lessons learned from experiences like these cannot be duplicated in a classroom setting. Meghan’s efforts have quietly touched the lives of many of our students.” Brian Reagan, Principal
If you are interested in donat-ing to Supplies for Success, dona-tions are still being accepted. Please donate only three school supply items or a gift card. You may drop off your donations to: Hudson High School, Main Office, 69 Brigham St, 978-567-6250.

Bring A Touch Of China To Your Kitchen (NAPSA)-Chinese food is perennially popular among Americans. Whether it’s a casual dinner or a large celebration, the Chinese restaurant is likely to be a dining destination. Every region of the United States has Chinese restaurants, and some well-known dishes were in fact invented in this coun-try, such as chop suey and fortune cookies. Most traditional dishes are cooked very quickly in a small amount of oil and seasoned with soy sauce and ginger. The ease of preparation and the availabil-ity of ingredients is why more Americans are bringing Chinese cuisine into their own kitchens. An even easier way to pre-pare Asian food in your home is to use a ready-made dressing, such as Litehouse Sesame Ginger Dressing & Sauce. It combines fresh ginger, onion and garlic with rice vinegar, sesame and canola oil. Great for marinating chicken or tofu as well as on salads, it’s full of authentic flavor without MSG, trans fats or preser-vatives. Not only that, it’s low in calories and sodium. Sesame Ginger Lettuce Wraps 11⁄2 pounds chicken (boneless, skinless, cut into cubes) 1⁄3 cup cashews (or peanuts) 1⁄4 cup grated carrot 3⁄4 cup mushrooms (diced) 1⁄4 cup bean sprouts (optional) 1 can diced water chestnuts (optional) 1 head of lettuce (washed) 1 jar Litehouse Sesame Ginger Dressing & Sauce Spray skillet with cooking spray. Cook mushrooms and chicken until done. Add the cashews, grated carrot, bean sprouts and water chestnuts. Cook 2 minutes. Add 1 jar Litehouse Sesame Ginger Dressing & Sauce; heat through. Separate let-tuce leaves. Spoon chicken mix-ture into lettuce leaves, depending on size. Fold to eat. Serves 6.For more information and recipes, visit www.litehousefoods.com.

Fall Concert At The Healing Garden
Join us for a warm and uplift-ing afternoon of harp, song, and traditional Irish tales!
The Virginia Thurston Healing Garden announces the next “Concert at the Garden” on Sunday, October 25 at 3:00pm. Kate Chadbourne, singer, musi-cian, storyteller, and poet, will perform to celebrate the gener-ous mystery that is harvest time - and raise your spirit with songs, tales, and laughter! Kate holds a Ph.D. in Celtic Languages and Literatures from Harvard where she teaches courses in Irish lan-guage and folklore. She performs
her signature blend of stories, songs, poems, and festivity all over New England. Her music has been featured on NPR’s pro-grams, “Cartalk” and “All Songs Considered,” and she has been a featured “tradition bearer” in the Revels Salon series and in the Gaelic Roots Concert Series at Boston College. She has pub-lished two collections of poet-ry, and teaches in The Bardic Academy.
The Healing Garden, a non-profit organization, is located at 145 Bolton Road in Harvard, MA and offers support, educa-tional and therapeutic services to those affected by cancer. Admission is $10 for Garden
members, $15 for non-mem-bers. All proceeds benefit the services of the Healing Garden. Visit www.healinggarden.net for event updates or cancellations.
Memorial Congregational
Church In Sudbury“No matter who you are or
where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here!” Join us for worship this Sunday at 10am. We will join together to sing songs, listen to the preachers’ reflections on the week’s scrip-ture and lean on one another and God in prayer.
Sunday worship service begins at 10 a.m.; youth from pre-K to 8th grade stay with their family in worship for the first 15 min-utes and are invited to leave wor-ship after the children’s moment to go to Discovery Kingdom where they use theater, art, cook-ing, games and more to further their understanding of the Bible. This fall we are studying the Ten Commandments and the two great commandments. Childcare for infants and toddlers is pro-vided every Sunday from 9:30 a.m. until the end of the service.
Many stories from our scrip-tures take place at a well. In addition to providing life-giving refreshment, communal wells are often the location of God-centered conversations that lead
to deeper human relationships. We gather on Wednesday
nights at 7 p.m. seeking the same. Our time together is meant to build relationships and be refreshing. A variety of ideas are discussed including cur-rent events, theological ideas, and how we feel called to be “church.” We seek God through liturgy, communion, and other spiritual practices. Sometimes dialogue is inspired by sacred and secular music or video. We conclude with communion.
Everyone is invited to partici-pate as much or as little as com-fortable. Join us on Wednesdays at 7pm in the parlor of MCC located at the corner of Concord Rd and Church St in Sudbury. There is a seat at the table for you. For more information, please contact the church office at 978-443-3885 or [email protected]
MCC is located at 26 Concord Rd (across from Goodnow Library in Sudbury) and is open to and accepting of all persons regardless of race, ethnicity, gender expression and identity, sexual orientation, age, ability, marital status or financial situa-tion. Sudoku
Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

“The Poem That Leads Us Backwards –
And Forwards”Join the congregation at First
Parish of Sudbury Unitarian Universalist Oct. 25 as we wel-come Rabbi Robert Orkand to our pulpit. He notes that the Jewish community recently completed the High Holy Day “season”—a time of reflection and forgive-ness. Rabbi Orkand asks “What is “forgiveness, anyway? --to see where you are, and to feel a sense of discontent about where you are. It means to go back to the place where you once were – not geographically, perhaps, but spiritually. It means to retrace
your steps. It means to go back to the inner place that really defines who you are.” Rabbi Orkand recently retired after 40 years in the pulpit rabbinate. During his career he taught a variety of topics related to religion, but his favorite was, and remains, Comparative Religion, believing that only through knowledge will people come to understand and accept both that which unites us and that which divides us.
On October 25th First Parish will Share the Plate with “Dignity in Asylum” a not-for-profit organization based in Concord, MA dedicated to providing safe transitional housing and support for asylum seekers, those who have been granted asylum, refu-gees and unaccompanied minors at risk of homelessness. Each month the congregation gives half of its collection to a worthy organization recommended by a congregant.
This Sunday at First Parish Sudbury children aged 6-months to 4 are invited to play in our nursery. Children 4-6 are invited to our Spirit Play class, where we are introducing our seven rainbow principles through sto-rytelling, creative play, and arts and crafts. Older children still in grade school are invited to join our Sing to the Power class, where we are exploring how we can create positive change in the world through the power of our roots this week. 7th and 8th graders are invited to join the Breakfast Club, and the high school youth group will meet at noon, after social hour.
First Parish of Sudbury is a Unitarian Universalist congre-gation located at 327 Concord Road. We embrace diversity and welcome the participation of all persons who wish to join us for worship, activities and service to the greater communities.

Minuteman Announces Federal
Food Service Guidelines
Minuteman High School is reminding families that it takes part in the national school lunch and breakfast programs – and that free or reduced priced meals are available to students whose families are eligible.
“At Minuteman, we believe that a healthy breakfast and lunch should be available to all students. That’s why free and reduced priced meals are avail-able to our students every school day,” said Heather Shastany, Food Service Director at Minuteman.
Minuteman High School uti-lizes the district website (www.Minuteman.org) to inform Minuteman families of the avail-ability of the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs, Shastany said.
The eligibility criteria for free and reduced priced meals are set by the Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines. The complete chart for eligibility criteria can be found by visiting the following site: http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2015-03-31/pdf/2015-07358.pdf.
The Free and Reduced Meals Application packet is mailed to all families yearly and as nec-essary. Additionally, application packets are provided to all new students.
Families receiving assistance from Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR), Temporary Assistance for Needy
Families (TANF), homeless, migrant, runaway and enrolled in an eligible Head Start or enrolled in an eligible pre-kindergarten class will be notified of free eligibility. If a family member is receiving these benefits and not notified, they should contact the Food Services Department at Minuteman High School to have free meal benefits extended to them. If the household chooses to decline the free meal ben-efits, they must contact the Food Services Department.
Minuteman is an equal oppor-tunity provider.
