TRANSCRIPT
Dear Parents,
Our Kindergarten thru 12th grade
students will be participating in
our summer reading program. The program is in partnership with the
Grafton Public Library.
Students should log their summer reading minutes using the Grafton Summer Reading Challenge Google online form or on the reading log that is attached. We will track student progress for summer reading minutes, with incentives for each level.

The independent reading level is the level at which your child can read with 95%-100%
accuracy and satisfactory or excellent comprehension. Your child is able to read these
texts with little or no support at all.
Teachers often call books at a child’s independent reading level “Just Right Books.”
Try using the “Five Finger Rule” for just right books. At school we teach students to try
reading a couple pages from a book before checking it out from the library. If they can
count more than 5 unknown words within the first couple of pages (or approximately 100
words), then the text is too challenging to read on their own. It would be appropriate to
read that text with the support of a more experienced reader, or for a more experienced
reader to read that text aloud to the student.
The appropriate Guided Reading Level (A-Z) for your child is provided with the Login /
Password .

Read Aloud Books
Children love to hear adults read to them. It creates a special time between adult and
child. Children can listen to language at a higher level than they can read. Our future 4K
and kindergarten students may document their Read Aloud Book time (when an adult
has read to them) on their reading logs.
The School district of Grafton Reading challenge is in partnership with the U.S.S.
Liberty Memorial Public Library summer reading program. Reading minutes may
be used toward both programs.
