By 2005 Academic technology will supplant ERP eg SIS.
80% of U.S. and European universities/colleges will offer global e-learning by 2004.“
Naming a single, standardized product is now the predominant practice......UCISA VLE Survey 2003.
50% of education e-Learning infrastructure spending will be directed toward best-of-breed pedagogical and content management tools.
Yet… 30% of all education institutions will have to contend with a mission-critical vendor either failing or changing due to a merger or acquisition

The Blackboard Content System is a single integrated system that enables every student and faculty member to have their own file space where users can engage in content:
• collection• sharing• discovery• management
What is the Bb Content System?
44
Bb Content SystemThe Blackboard Content System is based on powerful Internet file management capabilities that enable faculty and staff to manage, share and reuse content. Institutions can use the Blackboard Content System to deliver critical student services that enable the learning process including easy to use tools for assembly and presentation of electronic portfolios and “virtual hard drive” space. The Blackboard Content System also provides multiple ways to integrate with library systems and processes through mechanisms such as eReserves and standards-based content metadata tagging.

The Blackboard Content System enables institutions to provide services in four key areas:
Product Framework
48
Client Value of BbLS.NET SIS integration via Biz Talk (industry standard data
integration solution). Scalable
– Virtual Private Communities via MS Office Live Collaboration Server (IM, Whiteboard, NetMeeting)
• 20,000 concurrent users per each MS Office Live Server
– Built to be load balanced (true server farm deployment)– Built for SQL Server 2000 (only)– Built for Windows 2003 Server (only)
Easily integrate with other Microsoft products– Making the end-user experience richer
• Create calendar items in Outlook and automatically update the Blackboard calendar

Building Blocks- Features -
Building Blocks allows for institutions or third-party vendors to easily and rapidly develop custom:– Content Types, – Communication & Collaboration Tools, – Portal Modules and Channels, and– Bridges to External Systems
The Building Blocks Manager allows you to:– install, manage, and remove product add-ons.– set the properties for each product add-on
Active Developer Website Communities:– www.blackboard.com\dev\– www.bbug.ca – www.bb-opensource.org
Detailed Documentation:– SDK Documentation, – Application Framework Document, – Extension Developer Guide, – Extension Interface Document, – Module Developer Guide
51
Building Blocks technology currently contains: – a set of over 500 published APIs.– freely available SDK (software developers kit)– the Building Block Manager Application within
existing user interface to install, manage, monitor, and set properties of installed Building Block Tools
Building Blocks has an existing communityof developers who are working to innovate and expand the learning environment
– over 125 institutions and commercial vendors are members of the Bb Developers Network
– over 100 Building Blocks applications developed and available for download
– an annual Developers Conference
When you modify source-code or use open source to extend a platform, you close off the upgrade path to new releases. Building upon published APIs allow the core systems to be upgraded while your customizations and add-ons fully migrate.
Building Blocks- Summary -
Bb is Committed to Open Architecture
Standards Based (and driver of standards)
Enables flexibility and innovation on top of a widely adopted e-Education system
B2 Bottom Line
53
Standards- Features -
Content Reuse1. ADL SCORM – allows for the re-use of packaged content in a format required by the US Government. 2. IMS – The primary standards group in the academic e-Learning space. The IMS content specification, metadata and
design specifications allow for content to be used, searched and indexed across a wide range of learning systems.3. AICC – A standard in corporate learning for the 20 years, AICC content support ensures that users can choose from
millions of content packages.4. Microsoft LRN – Microsoft’s free standing SCORM (don’t you mean LRN??) player is directly integrated into the
Blackboard Learning System.Data Integration5. OKI – an MIT, Stanford , and U. Michigan consortium working on interoperability of learning tools and the learning
infrastructure. Through Building Blocks, Blackboard interoperates with OKI. 6. UPortal – Blackboard seamlessly integrates with this Open Source portal framework.7. SIF (School Interoperability Framework, K12) – Blackboard is working to provide support for the SIF. This allows for
data reporting and is important for compliance with NCLB (No Child Left Behind) legislation. 8. IMS Learner Information Package (LIP), IMS Enterprise – Blackboard provides support for the data formats for back
office interoperability and tracking between disparate systems (SIS, MIS, CRM, HRMS, etc.).Authentication and Authorization Integration10. Shibboleth – a key Internet2 initiative that will allow for the seamless learning across multiple campuses and learning
systems. Blackboard support this emerging standard.11. A-Select – Similar to Shibboleth, A-Select is a country-wide authentication system in the Netherlands.12. Kerberos – standardized integration via Blackboard’s flexible authentication APIs.13. LDAP – standardized integration with LDAP directories.14. DCE – standardized integration via Blackboard’s flexible authentication APIs.Usability15. Accessibility (Section 508 Compliance) – Blackboard fully implements Section 508 and is committed to continued
testing and verification.
