Intentionally Intergenerational by Cheryl L. Tatham, Minister

On July 7, we began an inten - tional effort to be an intergenerational congre-gation. What does that mean? It means opening all that we do to include our children and youth, from fellowship to worship. We are a covenant community com-mitted to embracing all ages of God’s children. Our children and youth learn about who they are as our children, as God’s children, by participating in and being present as we worship together. Our experimental Family Circle time, on Sunday mornings at 9:30 am was developed in response to desires expressed from our Prayer Triads to have more time together to get to know one another. We’re beginning our morning with break-fast goodies, stretching our bodies and singing together. Then we have

a few moments to dialogue with one another before moving into our age-specific Sunday School classes, and then all ages coming back together for worship at 11:00.

As we move through August we will evaluate how this schedule has been effective in helping us be inter-generational and make determina-tions about what our schedule will look like as we approach the fall.

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not re-ceive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” Together we worship— young and old, men and women — as children of God.

the CHIMES - AUGUST 2013

North Chevy Chase Christian Church Legacy Circle

Reflections on the Future of the Church and the work of the Christian Church Foundation from Rev. Dr. Laird Thomason

On the Sunday of my return from the General Assembly, several people asked if my Assembly

experience reflected a positive outlook for the future of our beloved Christian Church (Disciples of Christ.) It did, on many, many levels. One ongoing evidence of this is reflected in the life of the Christian Church Foundation. Fifty years

ago a few farsighted leaders who saw the need and the promise for an investment fund to supplement and to ensure the work of our church into perpetuity, and to allow a means, for people to continue to support their church in ways that are responsible and accountable to the entire church, founded the CCF.

By 1987 when the Bethesda Christian Church established a fund through the sale of its building, I was impressed that we increased the investment balance of the CCF by 8%. This reflected a $40,000,000 port-folio, an impressive amount it seemed. Shortly after, a lay couple added $8 million and the CCF has

continued to grow at impressive rates. At that time my wife Evelyn was a member of the Board of the CCF. This enabled me to see the staff at work, and the workings of the Foundation in encouraging congregations and individuals to “Make a

Difference” in the lives of individuals and congregations to discover the joy of sharing our resources to fur-ther the work of Jesus Christ throughout the world. Twenty-five years later the CCF reports a balance of $330,000,000 with a distribution to all

ministries of the church of some $15,000,000, thanks to demonstrably well managed investment experience. Our North Chevy Chase Christian Church congregation has become an integral part of that story in recent years. After years of preparation and study we were prepared to offer church members assurances

boarding on guarantees that they can entrust their accumulated resources to support themselves and the on-going ministries of the church to which they have contributed throughout much of their lives. At this time the NC4 funds invested through the CCF exceeds $606,000, which have enabled us to

distribute over $42,000 in 2012-2013 to ministries designated by the congregation through the Permanent Endowment Fund Policy. Each gift and each giver represents life experiences and convictions and testimonies of folk we know

and admire, living on now through the legacies they have given us by their living, and including their confidence in the future of the work of the church they continue to support. Out of gratitude to those beloved church members, the Trustees of the Permanent Endowment Fund of

the North Chevy Chase Christian Church are establishing a LEGACY CIRCLE, to inform and inspire others to share their commitment and confidence in the future of our church. Perhaps you recall the letter sent by Pastor Cheryl encouraging us to think about NC4, and how we

can support it now and for the ongoing future. This Fall we will provide more information about this LEGACY CIRCLE with an initial gathering of fellowship and mutual support.

I was asked if I was encouraged by the future of our denomination. I am. Am I encouraged by the life and work of North Chevy Chase Christian Church? You bet I am! Ask me, or any of the former or current Permanent Endowment Fund Trustees for further information, and plan to attend the gathering of the

LEGACY CIRCLE to be announced soon. Permanent Endowment Fund Trustees: Chair-Jim Heintze, Sec.-Treasurer, Nancy Longo, Members Buzzy

Barnard, Ann McClure, and Laird Thomason.
