The apostles received, each one into his single heart, the light-giving flame of the Spirit. They were each able to keep the gift, to enshrine it in their inner being, to preserve the living and working power, by the strength of the spirit of their community. The gift was sent out of the Divine World. The hearts of the apostles formed together the chalice into which it was poured and which was able to hold and keep what was given. They received on behalf of all Mankind that which can dwell in each single heart.” From ‘The Christian Year’ by E.F. Capel

    Editorial… The Festival of Whitsun

While looking into the meaning of Whitsun, I began to ask myself the question: what is it that enables us to reach out to others in order to create the true experience of community? When I came across this story, an encounter experienced by Paulo Coelho, it seemed to provide one possible answer to this question...

    In San Diego Harbour, California

I was talking to a woman from the Tradition of the Moon – a kind of initiation path for women that works in harmony with the forces of nature. ‘Would you like to touch a seagull?’ she asked, looking at the birds perched along the sea wall. Of course I would. I tried several times, but whenever I got close, they would fly away. ‘Try to feel love for the bird, then allow that love to pour out of your breast like a ray of light and touch the bird’s breast. Then very quietly go over to it.’ I did as she suggested. The first two times I failed, but the third time, as if I had entered a kind of trance, I did touch the seagull. I went into that trance state again with the same positive result. ‘Love creates bridges where it would seem they were impossible,’ said my white witch friend. I recount this experience here, for anyone who would like to try it.

Taken from the book ‘Like the flowing River’ by Paulo Coelho Perhaps it is this simple. To truly see and reach out to the inner being of another, all we need is the gift of love. “That which is most individual and lives most intensely in our inward depths is likewise that which we have in common with other human souls, which enables us to understand that we are united in Mankind. They received on behalf of all Mankind that which can dwell in each single heart.”

  • Dear Waldorf Community, We would like to invite all parents on behalf of the After School to join us Saturday morning 12th May from 10 am for an 'open discussion' in the new building situated at the lower car park area. We would like to hear any concerns, comments and or grievances you may be experiencing since the new changes in the After School. We look forward to welcoming you. Kind regards, Mimi Buijze On behalf of the After School

To all the muslim families in our community,

Dear Parents, Kindly refer to the attached campus parking map for guidelines regarding use of the school car parking areas. For the safety of our children, and that of pedestrians making use of Santa Road, we appeal to all parents to please observe the 30km/h speed limit while entering or exiting the school premises. Please exercise caution by yielding before crossing the one-way bridge, allowing one car at a time to cross from either side. Note that the lower car parking bays are allocated for Staff and Visitors, and must be used as a drop off area for Classes 6 - 13 only. Kindergarten to Class 5 children may be dropped off and collected at the Drop and Go Circle. If you wish to park your car when dropping off your child in the mornings, please make use of the parent and student parking bays to the right of the Drop and Go circle. Furthermore, please be reminded to make contact with our secretary Althea via email [email protected] in order to request your Spier parking disc. Thank you for your understanding and kind cooperation in this regard. Kind Regards, SWS Administration

  • Beautiful postcards received from Waldorf Schools around the world!

Kindergarten News… We want to congratulate Tracey Turner and Noloyiso Maqungo (KG 1 teachers) on obtaining their certificates in Early Childhood Development. Tracey obtained Level 5 and Noloyiso Level 4 in their studies at the Centre for Creative Education.

  • ALISON GODENIR I am Alison Godenir, a Class 6 parent. I am the Class 6 Link and I represent the Link body on the Board. I also chair the “Our People” Mandate – a group of individuals who ensure HR governance in the school. I am a business owner embracing the true essence of entrepreneurship by engaging with corporate business in co-creating New Ways of Being. Being a non-traditionalist and a Generation Specialist I serve as a bridge, synergising generational differences and help in creating social agents of change. I strive to change global conversations from problems to solutions and to shift humanity from old paradigms of dependency and scarcity to interdependence and abundance. I am a “new thinker” and “way shower”.

BONNY SCHLEBUSCH I am a parent with two young children, of which one is in the KG2 Class. The Waldorf School, the people who work here and the children form a part of your heart, in such a way that their wellbeing, becomes your wellbeing. In 2017 I began sharing my expertise by assisting and working alongside the Waldorf School Marketing team to design artwork and concepts to improve on the Marketing Strategies. My creativity, conceptual thinking and problem solving abilities are the strengths I bring to the school. As a Kindergarten parent I also would like to see these important year in our children's lives, and where they are spent, well nurtured, and the needs and growth of this faculty well repres ented on the Board of Trustees. I hope that through my creativity and positive energy I will able to assist and uphold these ideals.

DEVESHNI NAIDU Deveshni has three children and her youngest daughter is in Class 4 at SWS. She moved from Durban to Cape Town in 2000. In 2001 she opened her first business, Kohinoor – an Indian takeaway in Durbanville. Since then, she has operated and run a few businesses: Back 2 Health – an Ayurvedic Health Centre, Customer Visibility Solutions - a signage company and Next Promotions – a promotions company in the liquor industry. She is passionate about community building and spent much of her spare time over the years in community projects and programmes. Deveshni was the Area Convenor of the Sri Sathya Sai Organisation in the Western Cape for a few years and before that she taught the Sathya Sai Education in Human Values programme to children and teenagers from Elsies River and Parow. She used to also organise free medical camps in Mitchell’s Plein, Rylands & Cravenby as well as co-ordinate feeding programmes in those areas for the same organisation. Over the years her love for dance & movement was rekindled and she trained as a Nia Technique instructor. She immersed herself in other Conscious Dances to broaden her understanding of the various expressions. In 2007 she experienced a health issue. Coming from a holistic healing background, she chose alternate routes to heal. This led to her connecting much deeper with other women here and abroad on similar issues which led to her training in womb awakening & healing. Womb awakening taught Deveshni how to access and give voice to her own grief and trauma. In facilitating and hosting Red Tent women’s circles, she found ways to support other women. Since then she has tried to find ways to combine her passion for dance and her love for community to heal our collective trauma & grief in a post-apartheid South Africa. Some of the other Projects that she has been involved in are: Women of the Earth (Women’s gatherings), the Red Tent (One Billion Rising 2014, AfrikaBurn 2015) and Women are Medicine in Cape Town & Turkey (2014/2015/2016). She recently organised a workshop in Cape Town – “Is There Really a Them” for the Director of Moving Conflicts – Ben Yeger, an ex Israeli soldier & Movement Medicine teacher from the UK.

RAY BRINK I am an attorney, notary and conveyancer specialising in property and commercial law. I hold LL.B., LL.M. (Commercial Law) degrees and various postgraduate certificates and I am currently completing my thesis in completion for the requirements of a PhD in Private Law at the University of Cape Town. I also have yoga teacher certification obtained from Dr. Rashpal from Dharamshala, India.

My formal employment history ranges from legal research in preparation for CODESA to managing the State Attorney’s Head Office in Pretoria to presently practising as an attorney with a particular interest in human rights law. My interests range from the creative arts, to nature reserve hiking, yoga and meditation. I am strongly in favour of an education which focuses on the specific needs of a growing child based on his/her age and specific cognitive and emotional needs. A key value is also a strong development of a sense of civic responsibility and care for others irrespective of demographic background and individual challenging circumstances. For these reasons I am strongly supportive of Steiner education and its underlying values. However, such schools exist in an environment where the challenges facing them need to be managed wisely in order for the values to survive and expand their traction.

Presently my daughter Isabella is in Grade 2 at the school and my son will join kindergarten next year when he attains three years of age. I have recently been involved in the process of developing additional baby classes and look forward to being part of the Coming of Age team for the November camp. I am confident that my specific background, skills and interests would make me a valuable addition to school management and I would find it an honour to assist in directing the school towards a bright and successful future.

  • The Circus is not in town it is Next Door! Come and see the spectacular – Imaginaria – show from 25 to 27 May.

Many years ago a Waldorf student had a dream, a vision and a hope to bring young people together through skills development and the joy of performance in a social impulse of a special circus. Today that dream is a meaningful reality. The Sisonke Social Circus is an animal free, community upliftment project with its mission to bring the different communities of Stellenbosch together through the medium of circus. And so this dream touches and enhances the lives of so many. Not only all the children it has encouraged to grow through trying, sharing and mastering. But in the joy of coming to watch this uplifting circus perform. Imaginaria is a place

where your imagination is fully present and the show offers you a time of sheer enjoyment as you are invited into a world where colour and spectacle lights up comedy, juggling, drama, aerial arts, dance, flow arts, acrobatics, adagio and so much more. There will be music and opera and the showcasing of an exceptional children’s violin group from an outreach project in Masiphumelele, performing with Sisonke! The show takes place in The Shed. This is a fundraiser show and all proceeds go to maintaining the Sisonke Social Circus. Come and support and enjoy. Fri. 25 May at 18:00 – Sat. 26 May at 13:00 & 18:00 – Sun. 27 May 15:00 Tickets from Quicket R120 for Adults and R80 for Children or R150 for Adults at the Door and R100 for Children at the Door.
