Math Investigations Science and Social Studies Readers Workshop (We

Math Investigations
Math Investigations is a hands on approach to learning math concepts. You will occasionally see Math Investigations work sent home as homework. The skills sent home are always a review and have been previously taught in class.
Multiplication facts are expected to be memorized by April. Timed tests will be coming soon.

Science & Social Studies
Science and Social Studies will be given a letter grade this year. Science and Social Studies grades will be taken from the Scholastic News that we ask that you purchase for your child. The cost is $3.99 per student. Information was attached to your child’s agenda earlier this week. We are accepting money now.

Scholastic News
Scholastic News is a colorful magazine with current events in science and social studies.

Science
Science will be taught in a more hands on approach. Skills taught in class will be tested after each chapter. You will be notified in plenty of time for a test and students are welcome to take the book home.

Science Fair Projects
Science Fair time is right around the corner! Science Fair projects are mandatory for 3rd grade students. Be on the look out for the informational packet to be sent home around the first week in October.

Reader’s Workshop
• Basal Reading Book• Learn a variety of reading strategies to help
become a better reader and prepare for FCAT• Students will learn to become more fluent
readers• DRA tests will be administered twice a year to
check current reading levels• DRA levels do not change as frequently for 3rd
graders when compared to lower grades• Mastery of a DRA level includes and the ability to
comprehend a non-fiction text which tend to be more difficult

What Counts as a Book?
In the third grade, students must read 30 chapter books by the end of the school year
1 Book = at least 100 pages or is a book on their reading level
Students are responsible for keeping track of their own books
Log of books will be kept in their agendas Books will be counted on the last day of each month

Scholastic Book Orders
Order forms will be sent home about once and month
Helps supply books and materials to be used in the classroom
Orders can be made by check (made out to Scholastic) or cash

Writer’s Workshop
• Writing will be completed at school• Spelling and Grammar grades will be
taken from student writing• Our first writing genre will be Narratives
and Memoir writing• 3rd grade is a preparation year for the 4paration year for the 4thth

Agendas
Agendas are a must for communication. Must be brought home each night and
returned the next day Homework, Notes, Conduct Grades and
Important Information will be communicated through the agenda
Replacement agendas are $5 and can be purchased in the office

Homework Homework WILL be assigned Monday through Thursday. Math homework will be on Monday and Wednesday nights Written Reading homework will be on Tuesday and
Thursday night Based on skills taught in class and should only take about
15-30 minutes Students are responsible for their homework Students are responsible to read at least 20 minutes at
night Reading aloud to parents or siblings is a great way to do
this!

Progress Reports and Student Work
Progress reports will be sent home during the 5th week of each nine weeks
Opportunity to see what your child is doing before report cards come home
Must be signed and returned Student work will be sent home with
the progress reports and all D and F papers must be signed and returned

FCAT FCAT is tested in 3rd grade and passing the
Reading FCAT with a level 2 is mandatory for promotion.
Students will be able to log on to FCAT Explore to provide additional practice.
Students will be bringing home a FCAT simulator disc later in the year that they can download onto their home computer to practice.
We will prepare for FCAT through out the year.

Parents are more than welcome to schedule a conference at anytime.
You can request a conference by calling us, emailing us, or writing a note in your child’s agenda.

COPY CRISIS!!
Due to budget cuts we are in a copy crisis and are only allotted 500 copies a MONTH. We have been coming up with some creative ways to tackle this. If you can provide any assistance with this please let us know.
We are also requesting email addresses so we may email you vital information rather than copy it.
