2015-2016 Federal Report Card

Katy ISD is sharing information about the state, district and your child’s campus as

part of our obligations under the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB).

An information letter, along with a copy of the 2015-16 Federal Report Cards for

the state, district and our campus are available for your review in the front office of

our school, or online at www.katyisd.org or at

These Healthy Habits Enable School Success

Healthy habits make it easier for your child to do well in school. But what if, like

many kids her age, she’s not getting the nutrition, sleep, and exercise she needs?

The key to developing a healthier lifestyle is to make small changes, one at a

time. Health experts agree that middle schoolers need to:

Get enough sleep. They need between nine and 10 hours of sleep each night in or-

der to perform at their best in school.

Wash their hands regularly. Preventing the spread of illness can be as easy as wash-

ing hands. And fewer illnesses lead to fewer school absences.

Think about nutrition. They should eat a healthy breakfast every morning and make

nutritious choices for school lunches.

Drink plenty of water. Brains can’t store water, but they need if to work properly. Stay-

ing hydrated is one way kids can keep their brains sharp.

Make exercise a habit. PE class isn't enough! Adolescents need 60 minutes of physi-

cal activity every day—biking, running, playing a sport, dancing, walking, etc.

Read It Forward

This year’s Read It Forward (RIF) reading campaign has officially be-

gun! The 6th and 7th graders are encouraged to read Tut: The Story

of My Immortal Life by P.J. Hoover, one of the 2015 Texas Lone Star

reading books. The 8th graders are asked to read Firelight by So-

phie Jordan, who is from Katy! If you are not familiar with this read-

ing program, here is the scoop:

Mrs. Alidon recently met with the reading classes to launch the program and

gave away copies to each class. The remaining copies were “dropped” or placed in vari-

ous spots on campus. Some were in the cafeteria, hallway, office, and even some

classrooms. If students find a RIF book, they can pick it up, give it a read, and forward

it to the next person to enjoy! Not your thing? Then simply find someone to pass the

book to who will enjoy reading it. These are not library books, so please do not return

them to the library! After students finish reading the book, they can sign the inside

front cover, forward it on the next person to read the story, and come to the library to

sign an “I read the RIF book” emblem. The library staff will add their name to a roster

of students who will have the opportunity to meet the author. Sophie Jordan will meet

the 8th graders on May 16, and P.J. Hoover will meet the 6th and 7th graders on May

18. Both author visits will be held in the library.

Please note that students do not have to read a copy of the

RIF book that they find around the school. If some students can’t

find a copy lying around campus, they can check out a copy from

our school library or the public library. If you have any questions,

please contact the school librarian Mrs. Alidon.

Makerspace Donations

Dear Bobcat Parents and Guardians,

We are in the process of creating a library “Makerspace” here at MMJH. What is a Makerspace?

A Makerspace is an area that allows for creativity and innovation to occur so that students can engage in learning experiences that allow them to make real life connections. Makerspaces provide students with a place to tinker and develop something that may not have been possible to create without a space with re-sources. We want this experience to be a fun opportunity to expand science, art, engineering, program-ming, and technology skills for each student. To achieve this goal, we are in need of several items to be donated for our Makerspace.

If you are able, we would be appreciative of any donation that you are willing to provide. At this time, we are asking for donations for the following items:

Legos (including the green bases)

K-Nex

Wooden Blocks

Pipe Cleaners

Elmer’s Glue

Washi Tape

Popsicle Sticks

Markers

Buttons

Yarn

Crochet Hooks

Duct Tape

Masking Tape

Felt and Fabric

Play dough

Gift Wrap Tissue Paper

Modeling Clay

Ribbon

Scrapbook and Construction Paper

Modge Podge

Newspaper

Toothpicks

Foam Paint Brushes

Scissors

Stickers

Mason Jars (new item)

Glitter (new item)

If you have any items that you are willing to donate, please either call or drop off the items in the donation boxes inside the front office and the library. We appreciate all that you do each day to support McMeans Junior High.
