To reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, injury to persons or damage when using yourWJcuum cleaner, follow basic safety precautions including the following:

Read thismanual before assembling or usingyourvacuum cleaner.

Use your cleaner only as described in thismanual. Use only with Sears recommendedattachments.

To reduce the riskof electricalshock - Do notuse outdoorsoron wet surfaces.

Disconnect electrical supply before servicingor cleaning out brush area. Failure to do socould result in electrical shock or brushsuddenly starting.

Always turncleaneroffbeforeunplugging.

Do not unplug by pulling on cord. To unplug,grasp the plug, not the cord.

Do not use with damaged cord or plug. Ifcleaner is not working as it should, has beendropped, damaged, left outdoors, or droppedinto water, return it to a Sears ServiceCenter/Department.

Do not pull or carry by cord, use cord as ahandle, close door on cord, or pull cordaround sharp edges or corners. Do not runcleaner over cord. Keep cord away fromheated surfaces.

Do not leave cleaner when plugged in.Unplugfrom outletwhen not inuse and beforeservicing.

Do not allow to be used as a toy. Closeattention is necessary when used by or nearchildren.

Do nothandleplugorcleanerwithwet hands.

Do not put any objects into openings.

Do not use with any opening blocked; keepfree of dust, lint, hair and anything that mayreduce air flow.

Keep hair, loose clothing, fingers, and all partsof body away from openings and movingparts.

Do not use cleaner without dust bag and/orfilters in place. Always change the dust bagafter vacuuming carpet cleaners or freshener,powders and fine dust. These products clogthe bag, reduce airflow and can cause thebag to burst. Failure to change bag couldcause permanent damage to the cleaner.

Do not use the cleaner to pick up sharp hardobjects, small toys, pins, paper, etc. They maydamage the cleaner or dust bag.

Do not pick up anything that is burning orsmoking, such as cigarettes, matches, orhot ashes.

Do not use cleaner to pick up flammable orcombustible liquids (gasoline, cleaning fluids,perfumes, etc.), or use in areas where theymay be present. The fumes from thesesubstances can create a fire hazard orexplosion.

Use extra care when cleaning on stairs. Do notput on chairs, tables, etc. Keep on floor.

You are responsible for making sure that yourvacuum cleaner isnot used by anyone unableto operate it properly.

Remove the handle screw located just below the topedge of the back of the vacuum. See illustrationabove.

Position the handle so the cord hooks are toward theback of the cleaner.

Insert the handleinto the opening atthe top of thevacuum.

Align the handlescrew in the hole inthe handle and thehandle screw holein the back of thevacuum.

Insert the handlescrew so it passesthrough the back ofthe vacuum intothe handle.

Begin to tighten the screw wfth your fingers. It maybe necessary to adjust the handle slightly.

Using a screwdriver, tighten the screw.

DO NOT overtlghten. Overtlghtenlngcould strip thescrew holes.

DO NOT operate the cleaner without the screw Inplace.

CORDASSEMBLYMake sure the quickrelease upper cordhook isin the uprightposition. Remove thewire tie from the powercord. Lock the cordinto place by forcing itinto the Iocldng notchon the body of thecord hook as shown.

TOASSEMBLEATTACHMENTSAfter the handle has been assembled tothe body and the power cord has beenwrapped around the cord hooks, theattachments can be assembled.

I. The wand can be attached tothe

hose by insertingthe smallend ofthewand intothe open end ofthe hose.

Be suretoalignthe tabson thewand withthe "J*slotsinthe hose.Once the wand isinsertedintothe hose itshouldbe twistedto

2. The wand and hose can then be routed in frontof the handle and over the hose support.

3. The wand can then be placed over the end ofthe short hose, twisting as you push down.

4. The second wand, without tabs, (some models) can beplaced in the holder in front of the wand with tabs and thedusting brush or combination brush can be stored in thewand or the holder, (some models).

5. The crevicetoolcan be slippeddown intothe holderbesidethe wand.

NOTE:To reduce the riskof electric shock, thisvacuum cleaner has a polarized plug, one blade iswider than the other. Thisplug will fit in a polarizedoutlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully in theoutlet, reverse the plug. If it stilldoes not fit, contact aqualified electridan to install the proper outlet. Donot change the plug in any way.

5. Place your foot on the pad at the left rear of thecleaner and pull back on the handle until it releasesfrom its upright position.

6. With your left hand reach down and push theOn/Oft switch to the right. The cleaner will now start.

To shut the cleaner off reach down and push theswitch to the left. Raising the handle up will catch thehandle support spring and hold the handle in theupright position.

WTOSELECTPROPERHEIGHTFORCLEANING

This cleaner has two heights in which the nozzle canbe set up oft the floor for the various surfaces you aretrying to clean.

The height adjust knob is on the nozzle over the lightlens. The settings are" HIGH and LOW.

To adjust theheight, grasp theknob and moveit to the desiredsetting.

Adjust cleanerheights byreferring to thechart below tomatch the typeof surface to becleaned.

HIGH: medium to long pile.

LOW: short or medium pile.

Place unit in HIGH when using attachments toprevent possible floor damage.

Place the cleaner on a fiat surface, and move theheight adjustment to HIGH.

The attachments will fit on the hose or the wand. Inaddition the dusting brush or combination brush willalso fit on the crevice tool.

The hose and wand can be pulled off the short hoseby grasping the cuff and twisting while pulling up.

The attachments can be added to the hose if theitem to be cleaned is not far from the cleaner.hose will expand.

NOTE:When cleaner isturned on, the hose will havea tendency to collapse due to suction of thecleaner.

If more reach is needed the wand can be attachedto the hose and the attachments can be added tothe wand.

CAUTIONWhen uslng attachments, be careful not tooverextend the hose length when reachlng. Trylngto reach beyond the hose reach could cause thecleaner to tipover.

ON SOME MODELS:An extra wand, without tabs, is included. Thisextrawand can be added to the wand with tabs for extrareach. Insert wand and twist a quarter of a turn tosecure fit.

If the dusting brush or combination brush is beingused and more distance isneeded the crevice toolcan be added to the wand then the dusting brush orcombination brushcan be added to the crevicetool. The combination brush can be converted to anupholstery tool by sliding the brush out of the tool.

Squeeze the latchand pull forwardon the top of thedust cover toremove the cover.

Wash the foam filter in warm soapy water, rinse anddry thoroughly by squeezing the filter in your handand letting it air dry.

DO NOT wash in the dishwasher.

DO NOT install damp.

Replace the foam filter by sliding it back into placeunder the ribs in the dust cover cavity.

Frequently check and remove hair, string and lintbuild-up in the brush area. If build-up becomesexcessive, follow the steps below. Should the beltbecome loose or should it break, follow the BeltRemoval instructions.

The handle must be lowered and the cleaner turnedover.

To protect the floor surface, always place paperunder the nozzle any time the lower plate isremoved.

Releasethelower plateby pushingthetabsintoward the center.

Grasp the clipsatthe back and pullforward and upto remove the lowerplate.

Brushor remove any residue that may exist in the beltarea.

Carefully lift the right end of the agitator assemblyand then lift the left end. Remove the brushassembly.

Remove the belt from the motor drive shaft.

PersonalInjuryHazardBe careful when removing blush assembly, the be#tension Is high. Failure to do so could result Inpersonal Injury from brush assembly releasingquicklyand mapping away.

Remove any dirt or debris in the belt path area or inthe brush roller area.

Carefully remove the brush supports and washers tocheck for string and hair build-up.

NOTE:When you removethe brush supports,a small washer oneach end maycome off. DO NOTlose these twowashers.

Remove any string or debris.

Replace thewashers andbrush supports.See explodedview forcorrectassembly.

Loop the other end of the belt on the belt groove onthe brush assembly.

Align the square extension on each brush supportwith the slotsin the flame of the base.

Pressfirmly, checking to see that each end iscompletely inserted.

Check to see that the belt iscentered in the beltgroove and that the bnJsh assembly turns freely.

Reinstall the lower plate by placing the front tabs onthe plate into the slots on the nozzle housing andpushing the plate to the rear until the back clips snapinto place. Pull the tabs to the outside.

Returnthe cleanertothe uprightpositionbeforepluggingIntothe elecJTlcaloutlet.

-----CLEANING EXTERIORANDATTACHMENTSI. Unplug cord from wall outlet. DO NOT drip water

on cleaner.

2. Clean exterior using a clean, soft cloth that hasbeen dipped in a solution of mild liquid detergentand water, then wrung dry. Wipe dry aftercleaning.

3. To reduce static electricity and dust build-up, wipeouter surface of cleaner and attachments.

4. Wash attachments in warm soapy water, rinse andair dry. DO NOT clean in dishwasher.

DO NOT USE ATTACHMENTS IF THEY ARE WET.

Attachments used In dirty areas, such as under arefrigerator, should not be used on other surfacesuntil they are washed.Theycould leave marks.

The handle must be pulled down and the cleanerturned over,

Release the lower plate by pushing the tabs intoward the center.

Grasp the clips at the back and pull forward and upto remove the lower plate.

With the lower plate off the bulb housing can bepulled off the flange it is mounted to by wiggling thesocket back and forth.

Bulb HouRing

With the bulb housing loose the bulb can beremoved by pushing in and twisting itcounterclockwise. The new bulb can be placed inthe socket. Une up the post on the bulb with the slotsin the socket and while pushing the bulb into thesocket, twist the bulb clockwise.

MOTOR PROTECTORThis vacuum has a motor protector by-pass valvewhich automatically opens to provide cooling air tothe motor when a clog prevents the normal flow ofair to the motor. If the by-pass valve opens toprevent motor overheating and possible damage tothe vacuum, a change of sound will be noticed asairrushesthroughthe valveopening. Ifthisoccurs,turnthe vacuum offand unplugthe power cord fromthe outlet.Then check forclogsasdescribedintheCLOG REMOVAL section.
