What a great Soule Kindred Reunion in 1984! It is always a thrill to visit Plymouth and Duxbury and walk in the places our ancestors walked . We enjoy meeting our cousins from past reunions-and this year there were several "new" cousins who had travelled from as far as California,
Tennessee, Canada, Arizona and Alabama to be with us. With the 1985 Reunion set for Minneapolis, we hope to encourage many from the western part of our country to attend. <A lot of the Soules took our relative"s command "Go West~ young man'' seriously!> Start making your
"I vacation plans now!
For those of you unable to attend the Plymouth Reunion, take special note of the Soule Cup Plate offer on page 132. Not only decorat ive souvenirs, the cup plates can be used as holders for tea bags or butter pats, and are excellent as gifts for granddaughters or as hostess gifts for friends. All proceeds from the sale of the cup plate will benefit the Colonel John E. Soule Scholarship Fund. We owe a debt of gratitude to Bettie Soule <wife of ~ Soule, m~ther of three Soules, and grandmother of three Soules> for making the arrangements.
We have some material for the January issue because we couldn't get everything in this time, due to the length of various reports on the reunion; we do need a lot more Milestones and News. Let your cousins know what"s happening in your family.

I consider it a singular honor to have been entrusted with the responsibilities of the presidency of our family organization.
I thank the nominating committee and the members in meeting assembled at Plymouth, Massachusetts for their votes of confidence in me to preside during our 1984-85 year. All of the appointive officers are reappointed, they
I> being knowledgeable, experienced persons of demonstrated talents. Only Betty-Jean Haner has held the vital office of Treasurer. She continues to completely satisfy a succession of officers and the membership at large with her competence. Historian Dr. Milton Terry is an invaluable asset of wisdom and dedication. Membership Secretary Avis Haner was honored at our Plymouth reunion for her long service in a variety of -activities benefiting Soule Kindred. Marion O'Connell has provided a dimension of professional expertise to board meetings as Secretary to the Board. Newsletter Editor Geraldine Schlosser produces a high quality
_magazine which we modestly labe~ a newsletter. Fred Soul·es labors faithfully and well at the task of Newsletter Publisher and Mary Grismore is an indexer of unerring ability. These generous, selfless Cousins operate your organization between the annual reunions. To paraphrase a saying: This President would be foolish to tinker at fixing something that isn't broken! Your 1985 reunion will be held in Minneapolis but the dates will not be known until late December or early January. Kindly give The North Star State of ~he U~er Midwest~o~vacation considerations .

r 126 SOULE KINDRED NEWSLETTER VOLUME XVIII, No. 4 OCTOBER, 1984
The next item for discussion was the Five Generation Project -Volume III <the Soule volume>. Dr. Terry reported that the Mayflower Society was coming out with an Addenda to Volume III containing corrections, and stated he had not seen it. He stated that he and Anne Harding had been working on an Addenda to Volume III, which they hoped to have ready by the end of the year. He recommended that Soule Kindred publish their own Addenda and proposed that the Board get two or three professional genealogists to edit it. Miss Harding stated she had been checking the record of the Haskells and was looking for one more document to clear that up. After considerable discussion, a motion was made and seconded that the new President appoint an Editorial Board of impeccable authority to review and edit the Addenda. Motion was unanimously approved.
Motion was made and seconded authorizing the President to spend up to one thousand dollars ($1,000) to finance the Editorial Board. Motion approved.
Dr. Terry stated he would like to get approval from the Board to ask permission from the New England Historic Genealogical Society to publish an article by Donald Lines Jacobus on rules of evi~ence 1n the Newsletter. The Board approved.
Dr. Terry announced that he had 13 copies of the Soule Index which needed to be circulated to members for corrections and additions. Those interested should get in touch wit~ Opal Manly who has the copies for distribution. It will cost $4.00 for post~ge and handli.ng. ·
The· method of ~ublication of the Addenda was then brought up for discussion. Dr. Terry moved that rather than putting out a Revised Edition of Vol. III that the Board consider redoing Ridlon. The Motion was tabled.
The President then called for the Treasurer"s Report. The Treasurer's report was approved as presented.
Miss Betty-Jean Haner, Chairman of the Scholaship Commi~tee, reported that the Committee had selected Miss Diane Lynn Hulse of Eugene, Oregon as the recipient of the Scholarship fqr the cqming year. She stated that Diane was the outstanding can~idate and the unanimous choice of the Committee.
Dr. Whitecotten reported that Bettie Soule (Mrs. Francis G. Soule, Jr. of Sandwich, MA> had helped Dorothea Wilhelm with the arrangements of the Sandwich tour . After talking with him by telephone, she made arrangements with the Pairpoint Glass Works in Sandwich to make a Soule Cup Plate as a memento of our Reunion, as well as a fund-raising item for the Scholarship Fund. He stated the Cup Plate would be sold for $7.00, with the excess over costs to be put into the Scholarship Fund, and that she would have them available for sale.
Motion was made and seconded that the Treasurer be authorized to pay for the Soule Cup Plates. Motion approved.
President Whitecotten announced that Ben George Soule had offered to host the Reunion in Mineapolis in 1985 and recommended the Board accept his offer. The Board unanimously approved having the next renion in Minneapolis. Ben George stated plans were already made but that he would not be able to set the date until the end of the year after his vacation time had been scheduled. Hopefully he will have an announcement on it for the January Newsletter.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:50 PM.

The Pairpoint Diaaond Tradeaark~appears adjacent to the ria base at the lower right. The edge or ria has 25 scallops with three dots. The nuaber assigned to this Pairpoint cup plate is IP329.
Cup plates were used between 1826 and 1850 when fashion decreed tea cups without handles. Hot tea was poured into deep saucers ·to cool, while the cup was placed on a saall plate to prevent daaage to linens or polished tables. Kany exaaples of antique cup plates are on display at the Sandwich Glass Kuseua.
It is generally believed that the Boston and Sandwich Glass Coapany 11825-1888) was the first Aaerican fira to produce cup plates. They were one of the first iteas to be pressed in quantity after the invention of the glass pressing aachine. It is in this fine tradition that the conteaporary hand-aade cup plates have been produced on an antique press at Pairpoint Glass Works since 1974. The Soule Kindred liai\ed edition cup plate will truly be a collector's itea~

THE STORY OF GECRCE SOULE by Mrs . f. dwin S. Harris
OCTOBER, 1994
When George saw London in those days it was a raw but wondrous
place, It was filled with people, bad smells, mud, and noise but it
was an amazing city with a flavor more Latin than today, and more
boisterous. The crowds consisted of people of contras t s in ·dress and
speech. Each man announced his calling or work and his place in life
by his clothing; Today their likes cou l d be seen only at a mas querade
party. Merchant, knight, courtier, prior, monk, gallant, so l dier, ped
lar, apothecary, ballad singer, beggar, cut-purse, cripple, water
carrier, milkmaid, money-changer, all were there to see an d each h ad
his own manners and drab or gaudy clothes.
People lived much more in the street. They transacted much business
there. They had carnivals in the street. Grown men as well as child
ren played games and sports there. They aired their complaints just as
they do today in Hyde Park. And in the street in the p illory (stocks )
or on the gallows they paid for their daring. In the days before news
papers, news of invasion, or battle, of rebellion, and treason, was
cried in the street by messengers on steaming horses.
The streetSwere far more noisey than later generations have known.
Craftsman worked in open shops or sheds, There was hammering and grind
ing, sawing, and planing. Women did their needle work at the door .
There was the thunder of iron wheels stone if in Cheapside street, the
only paved thoroghfare in 1620. Trumpets blared, and musicians played
against each other . There was the clatter of horses, the wailing of the
beggar and the back talk of the quarrelsome. By extreme contrast, there
was the blessed ringing of church bells on a dozen occasions during the
day.
One must remember that this city of London that George knew was the
city before the Great Fire of 1666,The fire destroyed an immense area
taking endless streets and almost al l the wooden buildings. Even the
mighty Cathedral of St. Paul's, though made of stone, was a complete
rui~, It was of a different appearance than the St. Paul's built by
137
SOULE KINDRED NEWSLETTER VOLUME XVIII, No. 4 OCTOBER, 1984
the talented Sir Christopher Wren who had such a hand in the rebuilding of London.
As we picture George arriving in the city one wonders if he was
thinking of calling on any relatives he might have had, He was thought
by Banks to have had kindred in London, perhaps the sons or daughters
of the now deceased Robert Sole, salter . There .would have been. Unc"la ·.··
Myles who inherited the main wealth of the salter , Robert of Eckington.
The older brother of Myles named William died in 1620, It is only con
jecture, but could the grandson of George who was named Myles have
been named for the long ago Uncle in London?
Imagine George in London waking on a spring morning in a raftered
room on old London Bridge, He could hear the water rushing through the
arches, the clank and wheeze of the water mills that obstructed the
river in many of the nineteen openings. On opening the window, what a
London he would have seent The old black and white houses that were later
s wept away by the fire were picturesque and crowded to the river's
edge , their· flower beds overlooking the river.Above the roof tiles rose
the towers of the churches, the highest of all, the steeple of St . Paul's.
In those days when the river was the main highway of London, a house
on London Bridge would have · been like a house on the Grand Canal of Ven
i ce . Those who lived on the bridge occupied a watch tower from which
almost everything that happened on the Thames could be seen as well as
he ard .
We don't know that George ever had a room on London Bridge but he
saw it and was fascinated by it. The bridge was incredibly old, The
first London Bridge was made of wood, It was in the 1100 ' s that this
solid s tone span was built, and as was the fashion of the time, houses
and shops were constructed on both s ides the entire length. In the
period George and the Pilgrims might have crossed London Bridge1it
must have been extremely inconvenient, The foot path was not of the
sa;re width al l the way. At one place it was only 12 foot wide. The
overhanging houses made the roadway dark for most of the length,
and frequent arches o f timber from roof top to roof top kept the
400 year old houses from tumbling in the river.
The only list of shopkeepers on the bridge was made in 1633 ,
At that time there was a fire when a number of houses were destroyed.
SOULE KINDRED NEWSLETTER VOLUME XVIII, No. 4 OCTOBER, 1984
The list was made only 13 years after George l e ft England. Among those
burned out were eight haberdashers, six hosiers, one shoe maker, two
glovers, two mercers, one "distiller of strong waters", one gird ler , one
linen araper, one woolen draper, one pin maker, and one Curate of St .
Magnus the Martyr Church. It is well known that at one time there were
many book se l lers on London Bridge. Earlier, Holbein, the famous painter
of Henry VIII, was said to have lived on the bridge. It is not difficult
to picture George Soule turning over a book in the book stalls or making
a last minute purchase of perhaps, pins 1 before leaving. I wonder how
ofte n Shakespeare might have been seen looking about th~ same area? hnve
They could possibly looked at each other if George had been more in his
boyhood. It was the only bridge across the Thames until 1749.
There were e ndless eye openers for a young man, and the excitement
of London would have been like going to the County Fair every day.
Did he spend time on Br ead S treet, the location of holdings in the salt
businesQ6f his kindred Robert Sole-Soule of Eckington? Did the business
still belong to Uncle Miles? Bread Street appears a very pleasant street
at that time. I t b ecame a slum area in later years.
My husband and I will never forget a walk we took in this same part
of Old London in 1952 when the scars of war were still visible. We walked
the empty str eets with nothing but vacant deep cellars and devastation
over a wide area. The rubble had been cleared away and street signs had
been replaced in t h i s open faceless part of the city. We stopped at a
Lyon' s for tea as soon as we left the blighted blocks. We had been seat
ed for a shor t time when we were unexpectedly joined by an old woman
who might have been a char woman. She had a cockney accent, difficult to
understand, but made u~R~r digs had been in the devastated area n ear
the docks. She wanted us to know of the horror of the .bombings and the
fires . She had an aristocratic look about her with her long narrow
Norman face but all changed when she spoke. She was none too clean.
She kept saying, "Hit todaiy feir chainged by the rivah," meaning,
today it had changed by the river. We loved her. She was Dickenesque
with whisps of hair sticking straight out of her hat. She showed such an
independent spirit in s pite of her lot. She was a ple asant wonder to us.
That evening late we walked again, this time down Threadneedle Street
to the Bank of England and into Poultry Street . This section

had not suff e red. Our footsteps echoed. on the cobb l es as we e ntered some
of the ancie n t nar row s treets which we r e deserted at that t ime of the
e vening . Th e tall modern buildings had not made their appe arance in 1952 .
There were just the old buildings crowded together, some great, some
small. Some were elegant and some were quaint. Suddenly we came upon
a lamp lighter making his rounds! He gave us a cheery greet i ng as we
walked by.
That walk was enchanting, but only a slight introduction to the
city of• George's day. The streets have kept their names through the
ages in London. Only the people who have wa lked them have changed.
Did our George Soule hear his echoing footsteps, on a misty evening,
once long ago? I'm sure ' he did!

SOULE KINDRED NEWSLETTER VOLUME XVIII, No. 4 OCTOBER, 1984 143
MAINE CEMETERIES
We are beginning a listing of Soule related persons buried in Maine cemeteries. These cemetery listings were compiled by Donald H. Maguir·e in 1967. It must be noted <as Mr. Maguire does in his introdLiction) that the information in brackets was obtained from various sources. some of which cannot be considered reliable. Such information mus~ be checked in vital records for confirmation . We are listing Cemeteries 1 through 4 in this issue. Others will follow in succeeding Newsletters.
A name inde>: has been prepared by Jim Schlosser; this follows the cemetery listings, and is an index to all the cemeteries in the compilation.

OniER MISCELLANEOUS U4 T.A
Data contained herein that is not bracketed or paren~,esi zed was personally copied by this compiler from gravestones, markers, or monu~ents. Some data was obtained fro~ official cemetery records where graves were w~thout any type of marker. Much time was spent at each of these cemeteries a~d great care was exerc ised to assure that tra~scriptions have been accurately done.
Material contai~ed within the brackets or the parent~eses has bee~ added to that material taken from the sto~es or r ecords in the cemeteries in order to set do;.m addit<banal information and identification.s. Tnis material was researched from other sources and is as accurate as can be best determined from files at the compilers home.
This compiler can support much of 'Hhat is conta ined herein fro:n vital records, legal recorlds, and other official documents . Some of it can be supported from family records furnished by 1 iving relatives.
this material has been prepared in the hope that others may de r ive so~e pl~asure or benefit from its use and to that end it is hoped that if a~y errors or exceptions are taken to what I have set down, t.,at it will be· reported to ~e. I wi ll then check it or have it checked and make any necessa ry changes, if warra~ted.

NAME INDEX TO MAINE CEMETERIES
In most cases the inde>: is alphabetized according to the name on a gravestone or when Mr. Maguire cited documentation for a specific record. The cemetery code is listed after the name.
If a gravestone listed a maiden name for a woman but the stone also had the phr·ase "his wife", r·eferring to an adjacent stone of a man, that woman is indexed under both her maiden and married names.
Mr. Maguire did research on most persons beyond inscriptions on gravestones. He cited only general sources rather than invidival documentation. Since this is a Soule family newsletter, where Mr. Maguire indicated a woman was a SOULE descendant, she is indexed not only under her married name but also under SOULE. Since that is not documented for individuals, such listings include a star.

Jim Bolles, Director of Family Society Tours, spoke at the Saturday evening meeting of Soule Kindred. He showed slides of Eckington, England, which he visited the past summer. <This has been considered a possible birthplace of George Soule.> There were also slides of other family group tours, which showed the interesting events of such a trip-- such as an Elizabethan banquet, tours of London and Oxford, as well as personal contact with people in the ancestral village of the family group. A SOULE FAMILY tour is being planned for 1986. More information will be included in future newsletters, and all members will receive a special mailing.
