Road Relay (Cont'd) .

The Danbury crew lost no time in establishing who was boss as John McNulty blazed to a one minute lead in the first leg. Disaster almost threwthe proverbial wrench into the well oiled Connecticut machine as their second runner pulled a hamstring. Relays being what they are, Pedro Corbosgritted his teeth and saw it through and while Attic went on to record thefastest individual times in seven of the eight legs, it may just be Corbosleg was the most inspirational. Certainly it was the most crucial.

Attic's overall time of 4 hours, 38 minutes, 5 seconds was ten minutessuperior to that of Middletown's Orange Road Runner, a surprising (thoughperhaps its shouldn't have been) second place winner over New York FireDepartment who may have fared better had they been more organized.Millrosetook fourth just over two minutes behind NYFD,. and while coach Joe Klein-erman was visibly upset at the alleged pacing of NYFD during the final leg.To Millrose credit no protest was lodged. (Bring the big guys next year.)Millrose did receive the award for meritorious performance.

The Millrose women needed no pacing chalking up a 5:49:58 winning time.College Point made an early run at them, but a combination of Millrose latestrenghth and Point's weaknesses in the same stages saw CP drop back to thethird slot. Of course there was joy in Mudville as Melanie Mulvihill's setcame through for runnerup laure ls .

A word of commendation has to go to our two male teams. Off hand I canthink of six members who could have made that first team. Reasons aside itwas not the strongest possible we could have sent. In addition the latescratch of our number one runner on the team resulted in having to recruitan alternate to the B team. (The proper procedure would have been to havethat alternate moved to the B team and a member from the B moved to A, butthe lateness of obtaining a replacement and the ensuining complications dictated going the way team managers decided upon.)

Jeff Gold ran one hell of a race as our alternate and I take nothingaway from Jeff when I say that with one of our club's top runners TRRC wouldhave challenged for third spot. As late as the seventh leg Joe Porcaro hadus in fourth and for a non competitive club I think we have underestimatedour strength. The performance was super solid. So, too, was that of our Bsquad headed up by Tony Galfano. Again complemented by a couple of alternaterunners, the B was really a keep-your-fingers-crossed-we-get-tenth. Theireighth place finish was a solid eight place finish (ten minutes ahead of theninth place team). Similarly, they had us excited being sixth after the 7thleg. Congratulaions to Tony and John Holland and their respective crews. Ifor one of the majority (doubtful if there are any detractors) applaud them.

The post race awards dinner was the icing on the cake (or should I saythe Guinness in the beer?).Mayor Koch's letter to Dave Bruen, Putnam CountyExec, was read; Max Popper at 81 the oldest contestant was greeted most enthusiastically; the winning teams received their awards and applause in the

most of sporting gestures; Guinness received a plaque of the cast of medalsstruck for the event along with a framed competitor's number - number one,of course; Joe Albanese acknowledged the the efforts of a Scarsdale walkerwho set at five o'clock the morning of the race and walked the entire route;the buffet dinner was nothing short of exceptional;the Guinness flowed;Scotand Pete provided some delightful music; and one race director was humbled, somewhat embarrassed, but, nevertheless, sincerely appreciative of the flatter ing gesture given by a wonderful audience.

All in all it was, to put it mildly, quite a day.

COMMENT: The running boom - continued.

Wi th the invas ion o f Frank Shor ter in to l iv ing rooms throughout thecountry in 1972, the running boom took off. Experts predicted it wouldwane in the late seventies or early eighties, but they were wrong. So farit has held a steady course and the economy has received a boost creating firms and jobs hereto fore un imaginab le .

Despite the boycott of *80, the boom persevered. Live TV broadcastswere no t ava i lab le to us and a cer ta in impetus was, in a l l p robab i l i t y,lost. However, the Olympics are with us once more. It will not be atall surprising to see yet another thrust forward as spectators catch theac t ion . Those who have fa l l en o f f s l i gh t l y w i l l no doub t be ca tch ing ani t c h ; n e w c o m e r s c a t c h i n g t h e d e s i r e .

We are in for one great post Olympic show, also. Athletes have beenly ing low in an t i c ipa t ion o f the Games. September and October w i l l seethe b ig payoffs take p lace. The effect w i l l be dramat ic and contag ious.

So what's thirtyThe weather throughout our stay was typ- seconds?ically British, kind of "permacast," butthis day was downright hot.We were happy How were we to know team Holland hadto see Tom Barclay who was there to run someone equally as fast'. We lost by justin a marathon. Tom showed up to root us twenty eight seconds. Those of us who ranon. (Sorry, Tom, we couldn't return the in our own relay can appreciate the thrillfavor. Anyway, our best was a second place Then it was off to the showers and afinish to team Holland by a single point.gala reception at a hotel where the teamsWe shrugged it off figuring we would get were honored by the presentation of medalsthem Monday at the relay. Knowing where you'regoing never hurts...

You have to feel for the eight frontrunners whostrayed off course and ran themselves right out ofcon ten t i on i n t he Nor th Coun ty News lOK .

B u t a l s o c o n s i d e r t h e u n u s u a l c i r c u m s t a n c e swhich resulted in an unlikely competitor - namelyTony Galfano - running away with the victory simplybecause he knew the race course. 1 can only imaginethe thoughts that must have been running throughGcilfano's head at the moment he realized what wash a p p e n i n g .

He had to be thinking this is just to good to betrue", when he was told by Tommy Neeson at the fivemi le mark tha t nb one was i n f r on t o f h im .

1 can almost picture the smirk on his face whenhe realized he was about to become the beneliciary ola rare gift. He was going to win the race. Like thet o r t o i s e w h o u s e d h i s b r a i n s a n d d e t e r m i n a t i o n t obeat the swifter hare. Galfano made use of hisknowledge of the course to beat out his swiftercompet i ton.It is regrettable that the incident occurred at all.and it s also a shame we never got to see the battlethat might have resulted had the eight not gonea s t r a y.

But for those eight there will many otherchances. For Galfano, .the opportunities will be morescarce. You won't see a time of 36:57 winning manyl O K r a c e s .

Galfano is one of those runners who is normallytrailing the lead pack by a considerable margin. Theones who are always a minute or two off [he pace.

These are the guys inai prooaoly most often cireajii ofthat day when they can somehow snatch a win Ironithe fleeter of foot.

For Galfano. his knowledge of the course provedt o b e t h e c r u c i a l f a c t o r.

Many of those in the running circle say thatfrontrunners - those who feel thev have a ^oi atwinning - should always know their race course. Butthe race officials also have a responsibility in thisarea The point of who the responsibility lies with canbe easily debated.

Either way. Galfano had his victoiy. and rightiul-ly. had no regrets about it.

Anyone who runs consistently behind the leadersin most races can find satisfaction in Galfenospredicament.

H o w G a l f a n o w i l l d e a l w i t h h i s c o n t r o v e r s yremains to be seen. On one hand it's great that therace opened itself up for such an unlikely winner toenjoy. Galfano had his moment in the sun. and it maybe some t ime before he sees another.

But at the same time he may end up feeling likehe won something he didn't deserve. Maybe hissimple knowledge of the course is exactly what dide n t i t l e h i m t o t h i s v i c t o r y.

T o t h e E d i t o r ^ .The 7th Annual North County News race had a

surprise ending this year. I had the good luck to bethe surprise winner when eight of my fellow runners, who were in a lead pack, missed a turn on the course.I feel concern for them because they didn't get thechance to perform as they wanted. After talking withone of my friends who was one of the eight, he wasfeeling upset about what had happened. And I'm surethe others who missed the turn may be feeling thes a m e w a y .

For myself. I want to say that 1 would rather nothave something like this happen because it can causehard feelings and destroy some of the good things werunners £dl work towards.

I was pleased with my own performance becauseI ran the race 1 wanted to. 1 met up to my own

expectations and even lowered my time Irom theprevious year. As for the fact of coming in first. I mstill in shock-1 had a chance to do what most of myfellow runners never do and that's get in the winnerscircle. I will teU you all that it was very "exciting.'' Mywinning was more luck than skill, but my feelingsabout it will always be memorable. It was like a"Walter Mitty" dream come true. My running hasalready paid me back many times over, this was onlyan extra that I accept graciously.

To the fel lows who missed the opportunity toshow their t^ents. it's unfortunate -- we all want tosee a good race. As for me I'm happy that 1 was able torun up to my own expectations -- and for the rest whodream about being in the winners circle - keepDlugfiing away, you never know!
