Past, Present and Future Lesson Plan

Purpose:The lesson will focus on teaching students the difference between the past, present and future. Students will learn how individuals change over time and how the inventions of certain items have made everyday life more convenient than the past. History1.1 The student will interpret information presented in picture timelines to show sequence of events and will distinguish

among past, present, and future.Writing1.13 The student will write to communicate ideas for a variety of purposes.

a) Generate ideas.b) Focus on one topic.c) Revise by adding descriptive words when writing about people, places, things, and events.d) Use complete sentences in final copies.e) Begin each sentence with a capital letter and use ending punctuation in final copies. f) Use correct spelling for commonly used sight words and phonetically regular words in final copies.g) Share writing with others.

Objectives:The students will be able illustrate their understanding between the past, present and future by pasting 2 out of 3 of the picture in its designated place and writing accurate descriptions on their timeline.

Procedure:

Introduction “Today we will be learning about the past, present and future. (A) “Does anyone know what the “Past” means?” What about the “present” or future?”

o Allow a student can respond “I am going to read the book Daily Life Then and Now by Therese Shea.

o Can anyone look at the pictures on the cover of the book and tell me which building is from the past and which is from the future? Why do you think so?” (A,V)

o “Let’s read the book and see if it can help us learn more about the past and the present.” o Read the book to the students

Development “This book showed us some things from: (A)

o Then, also known as the pasto And Now also known as the present”

“The past- things that have already happened”o Write the word “past” on the board “For example: In the past we were all babies. Yesterday, was the past. In the past people rode horse and buggies

because cars were not created yet.” “Present — things that are happening right now”

o Write the word “present” on the board “For example: Presently, you are in the first grade. Presently, it is _________ day of the week. Presently, Mrs.

Harris is teaching you about the past, present and future.” “Future — things that may happen someday”

o Write the word “future” on the board “For example: In the future, you all will go to 2nd grade, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. In the future, you will drive a car.

In the future you will be an adult and have your own children.” “Can anyone tell me about some things that were shown from the past and present in the book and describe how they

were different?” (A) o Allow students to respondo Show Pg3- “In the past children played homemade games but kids now or in the present play video games.” (A) o Show Pg5- “In the past people wore shoes made of complete leather. Now, we wear sneakers, made of leather,

that have leather soles and shoe laces.” Put the past and present chart on the board. (A,V)

o “Now we will sort a few pictures into categories of past and present.”o “I will show you two pictures at a time. One of the pictures will be the item from the past (then) and the other

will be from the present (now). I want you to tell me which should go under past and which should go under the present category. I will do the first one for you.”

o Sort the first two pairs of pictures and explain the differences between the two for students. Show students a picture of myself as a child and ask if they think this picture is from my past or present?

o Have the students tell you the appropriate categories, paste them on the chart and discuss. (A,V,T)

“Now we will create our own personal timelines.”o “I have given you a packet. This packet includes a worksheet with a timeline on it and two pictures. One is a

picture that I took of you the other day. I have taken that picture and used the computer to make it look as if you aged.”

o For one of the boxes on the worksheet you will draw a picture showing yourself as a baby. Since you are drawing a picture of yourself as a baby do you think that that would be the past, present, or future?

o You will also finish the sentence “When I was a baby I could not ___________________.”o Now, someone tell me if we should place the picture in which you look like an adult in the present or future?

That’s correct the future. You will also finish the sentence “Now that I am in first grade I can ____________________________.”

o In the present box you will paste the picture that I took of you the other day and finish the sentence “When I am an adult I will be able to____________________________.”

o Give students their packets and allow them to work independently. (A,V, T)o For struggling students:

Help students with ideas by coaching them and asking questions. Partner strugglers with stronger students to model and support.

o For advanced students:   Student will complete a sort and paste past and present worksheet.

Summaryo Have students come to the front carpet. Students will share one of their written responses from their timeline.     Have a group discussion with students.  “Today we have learned about the past, present and future. We discussed how

things have changed over the past. Refer back to the picture sort and review the past and present sort. (A,V)

o “In the past, people cooked using fire. But now, in the present, we have stoves”o “In the past, people used candle light to see, but now in the present we have lamps.

o “In the past, people got from place to place by riding a horse and buggy but now we have cars, buses, trains and airplanes that help us travel from place to place quicker.”

Evaluation Part B:   Was the student able to paste the appropriate picture in the correct box and accurately list appropriate responses for the past,

present and future on their timeline?

Did your lesson accommodate/address the needs of all your learners?

What were the strengths of the lesson?

What were the weaknesses?

How would you change the lesson if you could teach it again?
