âIt might seem odd to you but even I didnât know who âI promessi sposiâ were before Teatroimmagine suggested me to stage the novel by Alessandro Manzoni. However, I immediately understood that this classic of Italian literature is imprinted for life in every Italianâs memory. A reminiscence of a strong sensation somewhere between hate and passion that leaves no one indifferent. Itâs weird, but in my French-speaking, Belgian culture, âI promessi sposiâ is a rather unknown novel that isnât even discussed in high school. On the other hand, every Italian knows Victor Hugo (our Manzoni) and his âLes MisĂŠrablesâ. But why? Why was âI promessi sposiâ never able to cross the Alps? What is the peculiar element that makes this novel
belong to the collective conscience of a whole nation for almost two centuries? There are many questions that have nourished our work, our research. The fact that a Belgian director stages such a âmonumentâ of Italian literature could seem a pretentious folly. However, I think at the same time, it allowed us to desecrate this classic, rather for fun than for challenge. To be clear, âle jeuâ is the common thread of the whole spectacle: âjeuâ is a French word that has the twofold meaning of âgameâ but also of âperformanceâ. However, we donât want to offer the audience a show that is performed, but rather one that is played. A show that demonstrates the joyful side of theater where the actor isnât an instrument of the script, the director or the scenography, but just of himself. To enact this infinite saga, this âtourbilionâ of characters with only five actors and one musician is like balancing on a thin rope: you are Lucia, but then you become Countess Attilia who dresses like a policeman while Agnese is Griso, Renzo transforms into Don Rodrigo, Don Abbondio is the Sister
of Monza and Azzecca Garbugli is also Friar Cristoforo and all this accompanied by the delightful sounds of an accordion. Every actor fulfills the double role of creator and victim of his own actions by telling the audience an immortal story that is dramatic and cruel, ironic and grotesque, tender and romantic, but above all contemporary.â (Benoit Roland)

a Babbo Natale.

âMy name is Hood ⌠Robin Hood, Prince of thievesâŚâ
Myth, legend, chronicle: many writers have told the adventures of the popular Robin, who, contrary to what everyone thinks, was born in a lagoon. Teatroimmagine will tell you the story of our lagoon hero and if you donât believe us, you also
donât believe in Santa Claus. What a pity⌠Since the late Middle Ages, we await the defender of the poor, the one who will eliminate injustice and inequality. We still believe that such a human being existed and that there was even more than one: men or women who fought for justice and equality while most of the time remaining unknown. A story of friendship, love and justice, of freedom and repression, a comic and dramatic story where hope and faith in the true values of life give us the courage and the will to make this mad world a better place. Our eyes are always those of the Commedia dellâArte, a magical filter that transforms every story by colouring it with irony, joy of living and musicality!

âHow can a Commedia dellâArte company have the insolence to enact a classic opera like âThe Barber of Sevilleâ? We all remember the opening lines by Rossini: ââŚla ran la lera, la ran la lĂ â. Donât we all occasionally sing âFigaro qua, Figaro lĂ â while taking a shower? Yes, this opera inevitably appertains to our historical and social patrimonium. The most famous arias are those that are used in all kinds of movies, music, television ⌠and now itâs our turn, today, to âdesecrateâ this monument of the Italian opera repertoire, using our almost thirty years of experience. âThe Barber of Sevilleâ is a light and amusing opera. Already in the libretto (dated 1816 and initially called âAlmaviva, o sia Lâinutile precauzioneâ (âAlmaviva, or The
Futile Precautionâ)) we immediately recognize underneath the clothes of Bartolo our Pantalone deâ Bisognosi: greedy, suspicious, forever in love with a girl that is far too young for him. And Figaro, doesnât he resemble our friendly Arlecchino, whoâs always in for a scheme? The Count of Almaviva definitely reminds us of Florindo, lâinnamorato in âArlecchino Servitore di Due Padroniâ (âArlecchino, Servant of two Mastersâ) and Rosina is the classic young lover. Don Basilio, maestro of music and corruptible know-it-all, strangely enough mirrors our corpulent Doctor Balanzone. Like it has been since our debut and most of all since the production of âI Promessi Sposiâ, the libretto of âThe Barber of Sevilleâ written by Sterbini, is only a pretext, or even better, a pre-text; the apparent reason that we will use to cover up the original motive of our choice⌠You already know it, above all we donât want to mask our personal motivations, which include enjoying ourselves and amusing the audience, to reread the opera of Gioacchino Rossini in our own way, with our âsavoir faireâ,
with self-mockery, without complexes, without neglecting the music but at the same time actually avoiding the comparison with the divine Callas and her colleagues, while having the exclusive benefit of not being singers but merely⌠actors!â (Benoit Roland)

On a stage of third order Commedianti dellâArte, they want to entertain the audience while telling a mournful and odd story: that of the loan shark Shylock who demands a libra of human flesh of the detested Antonio as interest for a loan. Itâs Shakespeareâs version of âThe Merchant of Veniceâ that takes advantage of the masks that are typical for the Italian way of storytelling, enjoying the fraud, the lie and the perversion of the relationships exclusively based on the value of money⌠An old story that still has a significant message which is maybe even stronger for todayâs humanity. In our âMerchantâ the
protagonists are, as already mentioned, the mask â which is a two-faced one, always a lie â and the stage â which is the space where the action occurs, just like Life is the Theatre of Human Fiction-. Everything that happens between these Comics is based on a relationship of giving and possessing, on using the mask to steal away âhumanityâ, to create a place where lies can become trustworthy. And if the audience enjoys themselves with this spectacle and laughs about everything that is happening on stage, be aware that they are actually bitterly laughing at themselvesâŚ

âTheater has always been a synonym of stealingâ: the tragic Greek stole from the myth, the Romans from the Greek and the Commedia dellâArte took a lot from the Romans. Goldoni and Molière were the source for many Commedia dellâArte stories, just like a lot of bourgeois and modern theater stems from 17th and 18th century writers and works. In âThe Hound of the Baskervillesâ, the attentive ear could also recognize a series of ârobberiesâ or, to use a euphemism, âinspirationsâ. First of all, the plot is that of the homonymous and famous detective novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, one of the most famous adventures of Sherlock Holmes. The whole is in fact wrapped in a Commedia dellâArte packaging: Sherlock Holmes becomes Sior Olmo, Doctor Watson becomes a Zanni, the naturalist of the novel a Pantalone and so on. But it doesnât stop here, itâs also not difficult to recognize Goldonian moments, Boccaccian references (donât worry, they are only vague
reminiscences) or even citations of Pasolini in this spectacle. Hence, we have gladly accepted these little plunderings; for the sake of entertainment and fun, we are convinced that theater is also, or even mostly, a game; itâs now the foolery that dominates, the story, the acting or the actorsâ skills (?!), the comic jokes. Everything is useful, everything leads to the same final goal: THE SPECTACLE. The cleverness of our author hasnât been able to avoid the transfer of this âsimple story of the houndâ from the misty countryside of Devon to the fog of the Bassa Padana; there still are a lot of mysteries to solve, family intrigues and ambiguities, all within a hilarious series of events. A Teatroimmagine reproduction of our first Commedia dellâArte spectacle of 1991 that has received a lot of acclaim and that has set the âstylisticâ tone of our following productions significantly. An amusing show that is ours, but simultaneously a remake in honor of its authentic author, director and the whole original cast, that can create a moment of pleasant distraction,
without being sophisticated, only by using an antique but secure method, the method of theaterâŚâ
