Cycles
• A repeating series of events– Duration varies
• S-l-o-w: repeat over a long period of time
– millions of years
•fast: repeat in a short amount of time– hours, days
Types of Cycles
• Water
• Carbon
• Energy
The Rock Cycle
Definition:
Repeated series of events by which rock gradually and continually changes from one type of rock to another.
ROCK CYCLE
Rocks are Recycled in the rock cycle
• During the rocks cycle, rocks are - formed, –broken down, –Reformed
–There are only THREE basic types of rocks in the rock cycle. igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic
??????
Where does
the rock cycle
begin?
Where does
the rock cycle
end?
The Rock Cycle
• There is no “starting” point• There is no beginning and no
end.• The cycle can go in any
direction.• It doesn’t have to go “in order”
• It is a very S – L – O - W cycle
• Which type of rock is determined by its ORIGIN (How it formed). (remember 3 ways that
minerals form?? Pg. 97)
• Magma below the Earth’s surface is the source of all the Earth’s rocks
But… lets start when the earth was molten during the Hadean Era, 3.8 billion years ago
Igneous Rocks (#1-15)
• Magma (molten, liquid rock) rises
• At or near the Earth’s surface it cools and crystalizes
• Solidifies into igneous rock
Metamorphic Rock (#16-30)
• The original rocks were buried deep beneath layers and after they are exposed to HEAT and PRESSURE
• They get chemically and physically changed (morphed) into new rocks.
Sedimentary Rocks (#31-45)
• At the surface rocks are broken down into smaller pieces (sediments) by weathering
• Weathering and erosion happen from WATER, wind or ice
• Sediments are layered, buried, compacted and cemented into sedimentary rocks
Bell ringerWhich rock type….(igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic) 1. is formed by heat and pressure on other rocks? 2. is classified by their crystal size being either fine-grained or course-grained? 3. shows “flattened” or “fused” crystals? 4. forms “glassy” rocks that cooled quickly outside the earth’s surface? 5. is formed by mud, sand, rocks, pebbles and shells fragments “cemented” together?
