Tests are a part of school life. Exams and quizzes are routinely given to check each student’s level of learning. Schools are also required to give yearly achievement tests in which your child’s performance is compared with the performance of other students within the school district and the state. Here are a few ways you can help your child at test-taking time: 1. Make sure your child attends school daily. When a child misses school he or she can quickly fall behind. If your child must be out of school, get the missed assignments from the teacher and help your child complete the work in a timely manner. 2. Make sure your child receives a full night’s sleep the night before and eats a healthy breakfast on the morning of the test. 3. Encourage your child to prepare for taking a test by studying. It is best to study over a period of time rather than to quickly “cram” for the test the night before. 4. Encourage your child to listen carefully to all directions before the test and ask questions if any directions are unclear. 5. Show interest in your child’s school work. Pay attention to the test results and notify the teacher of any concerns. 6. Openly encourage your child to do well on tests. Convey to your child your confidence that he or she will do his or her best. 7. Provide a quiet, well-lit place at home for your child to do his or her homework and other assignments. Help answer questions about homework, but don’t do the homework yourself. 8. Work with your child to improve his or her reading skills. Proficiency in reading is a must for a successful school experience and in test-taking. Talk with the teacher about ways you can increase reading interest and basic skills. 9. Become informed about the tests your child will be taking. Ask about the teacher’s expectations and find out what subjects and skills will be tested. Ask how the test results will be used to help your child succeed. 10. Be careful not to judge your child’s abilities on the basis of one test score. Any one test provides only limited information about what your child has learned or what he or she can do.
