TOPICAL GUIDETOPIC SEARCH
This guide gives a list of biblical passages organized under their corresponding topical references. Some of the verses listed are used by the Jehovah’s Witnesses (and other cults) to back their doctrinal claims. Along with many of those verses are helpful notes which explain how they use the passage(s) to their advantage, where they are taken out of context, how they are misinterpreted, showing that their doctrines are not harmonious with the whole of God’s word, and what you need to know to refute their erroneous claims. The majority of the verses listed in this booklet are for the purpose of defending the truth of God’s word against the Watchtower Society and all other cults that attempt to downplay the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ and His Holy Spirit. The topics cover a vast range from the reality of hellfire, the consciousness of the soul after death, baptism, the person of the Holy Spirit, the Kingdom of God, Salvation, the sufficiency of the Bible, and the true person of Jesus Christ (among many other topics).
In the appendix there is a condensed list of index cards which are for the purpose of cutting and pasting into a bible next to the corresponding passages. These cards contain a large portion of the notes found in this booklet and are a useful tool for witnessing to the Witnesses or anyone else. Note: All Scriptural references with the † symbol preceding them have a corresponding explanatory note found in part 1 and 2 of the Reference Notes section at the end of this booklet which give a more in depth look and/or additional verses for the topics being discussed.

REFERENCE NOTES PART 1DESCRIPTIVE HELP BY PASSAGE
The notes below are listed in ascending order based on their biblical reference. They correspond to specified verses as indicated in the Topical Guide which have the † symbol attached. These notes are for clarification on the pertinent verses and to disarm the false doctrines held by many - especially the Watchtower. Part 2 of the Reference Notes contain a number of “Topical Helps” based solely on certain topics rather than directed toward a specific passage of Scripture. These too are referenced in the Topical Guide in this booklet under the appropriate headings.
GENESIS 1:1,2The Spirit a person or Active force?
There are 3 primary attributes of personality: mind, emotions, and will. A force does not have these attributes.
The Spirit has…
A mind: 1 Cor 2:10; Is 11:2; Eph 1:17; Rom 8:27Emotions: Eph 4:30A will: 1 Cor 12:11; Acts 16:6
The Holy Spirit...
Teaches: Jn14:26Testifies: Jn 15:26Guides: Rom 8:14; Jn 16:13Commissions to service: Acts 13:4Commands: Acts 8:29; 13:2; 16:6Intercedes: Rom 8:26**Jesus intercedes (same Greek word - entynchanō) for believers: Heb 7:25; Rom 8:34 Convicts men of sin: Jn 16:7,8Bears witness: 1 Jn 5:6Hears & speaks: Jn 16:13
The Holy Spirit can be…
Grieved: Eph 4:30Blasphemed: Matt 12:32; Mk 3:29,30Lied to: Acts 5:3Obeyed: Acts 13:2,10Sent: Jn 14:26; 16:7
He is contrasted w/ unclean spirits: Mk 3:29,30
Lack of a name argument...Spiritual beings are not always “named” in scripture. Unclean spirits are rarely named and JW’s will acknowledge their persons (not active forces). The Holy Spirit is a designation of character.
GEN 2:7The Soul & Soul-SleepMan a “Living Soul”?
The Watchtower teaches that a man is a combination of physical material and “breath”, which form a living soul. Man does not possess a soul or spirit, but is a “living soul”; man was not given a soul, but became a soul.
o In the OT, the Hebrew word for soul (nephesh) can be used in reference to a living being (Gen 2:7 is an example of this). Because the word can be used in this sense, does not mean it’s limited to this sense, or that man has no immaterial nature. Gen 2:7 is simply stating what man is, not what he is not.o The word for soul (nephesh) is used of man’s immaterial nature in Gen 35:18.
o The word nephesh is used in reference to having emotions & experiences: can be sad (Deut 28:65), grieved (Job 30:25), in pain (Ps 13:2), distressed (Gen 42:21), bitter (Job 3:20), troubled (Ps 6:3), and cheered (Ps 86:4).o In this sense, nephesh refers to the “inner man” within the human being. This is consistent with verses like: 2 Kg 4:27; Ps 42:6; 43:5.
The Watchtower teaching of Gen 2:7 does not agree with the whole of Scripture, but contradicts it. God does not contradict Himself and the Scriptures were written by holy men who were moved by the Holy Spirit (2 Pet 1:21).
GEN 17:1“I am Almighty God”
Almighty God… Father or Son?
o No one can look upon the face of God without dying (Ex 33:17-20)o Abraham recognized the Lord in Gen 18:1-3.o In Gen 18:8, the Lord ate food prepared for him and the other two angels. (Jesus did the same after his physical
resurrection: Jn 21:12; Lk 24:40-43)
The Lord rained brimstone and fire from the Lord in heaven (Gen 19:24). How many “Lords” are represented in this verse? The Scriptures say there is only one Lord and God. (Mk 12:29; 1 Cor 8:6)
**Also see: Ex 3:14 (I am); Ex 6:1-3 (“as God Almighty”)
EXODUS 3:15Jehovah: God’s Name Forever?
WTS claims this verse constitutes a command to refer to God as Jehovah forever. Because the JW’s are the only people who consistently call God by this name, they are the only real followers of God, the WTS says.
o God is identified in other ways beside Jehovah. One example: The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob. Ex 3:15 cannot be used by the Watchtower for their “only name of God” claim.
o Jesus never addressed the Father as Jehovah. The NWT sometimes puts the name “Jehovah” on Jesus’ lips though He did not speak it.
o God is called: Our Father (Matt 6:9; 11:25; 26:39-42; Mk 14:36; Lk 10:21; 22:42; 23:34), Abba Father (Rom 8:15; Gal 4:6), I AM (Ex 3:14)
o The name Jehovah does not appear in the Greek manuscripts of the NT. If Jehovah was to be the sole name for God in all generations, it would be found in the NT.
o The phrase “I AM” (Ex 3:14) and Yahweh (Ex 3:15) are both derivatives of the same verb (“to be”). They have the same root meaning and can be considered interchangeable.
DEUT 6:4Plurality of God: ēlohim, echad
The Lord our God is one Lord yhwh ēlohim echad yhwh
The Hebrew word for “one” is “echad” and allows itself to the plural form (alike, altogether, one, some). It is the same word used in:
Gen 1:5 “…were the first day.”Gen 2:24 “…and they shall be one flesh.”Num 37:17 “one cluster of grapes.”Ezra 2:64 “The whole congregation together was 42,303”Ezek 37:17 “And join them one to another into one stick;…”
The singular form of the word “one” in the Hebrew is “yachid”. It does not allow itself to plurality. God knows enough Hebrew that if he did not want to convey plurality regarding his person, he could certainly have used the word “yachid” here in the scriptures.
Persons of God in the OT:The Spirit of God: Gen 1:2The person of God we cannot see without dying: Ex 33:20The person of God we can see: Gen 18:1; Gen 32:30; Is 6:5
Two distinct persons have one of the primary names of deity, ēlohim, applied to them in Ps 45:7 “…therefore God (ēlohim), thy God (ēlohim), hath anointed thee…”
Hebrew words ending with “im” are of the plural form and the Hebrew word ēlohim is the plural form of God. The singular form would be eloah (Hebrew) or elah (Aramaic).
In ∴ Deut 6:4, we have two words in the plural form (ēlohim: God, and echad: one) describing the Lord (YHWH).
The Lord our God is one.
Scripture does not directly say the Father is YHWH, but we know He is YHWH because He is called “God” and the “only true God” (Jn 6:27; 17:3)
Jesus is also called “God” (Jn 1:1; 20:28), “Mighty God” (Is 9:6; 10:21), “our great God and Savior” (Titus 2:13), and “Lord” (Rom 10:9; 1 Cor 12:3; Phil 2:11; Jn 20:28)
Deity of the Holy Spirit: Acts 5; 1 Cor 3:16; 6:19; 2 Cor 3:17; Eph 2:22)

Hebrew word for “one” ( Deut 6:4 ) The Hebrew word for “one” is “echad” and allows itself to the plural form (alike, altogether, one, some). It is the same word used in Gen 2:24 “…and they shall be one flesh.”
PSALM 37:9,11,29A Paradise on Earth?(see Reference Notes Part 2 : The Great Divide)
The psalmist, in context, was speaking of something that people in his own lifetime (and following generations) would experience. The Hebrew word for “earth” (eres) in Ps 37 often carries the meaning of “land” (Ps 37:29).
The Hebrew word for “forever” is ad (v.29). In the OT, it often denotes the unforeseeable future. The phrase “dwell in it forever” means “dwell in it from present through the unforeseeable future”, not necessarily for eternity.
PSALM 110:1 (see Mk 12:36)Jesus is Lord and God
The Lord said to my Lord… (ref.: Jesus) YHWH adown (adonai)
The same Greek word “adonai” is used of the Father in other parts of scripture.
Ex 23:17 …the Lord (adonai) God.Deut 10:17 God is…, Lord (adonai) of Lords.
Jos 3:11 …ark of the covenant of the Lord (adonai) of all…
PSALM 115:16A Paradise on Earth?(see Reference Notes Part 2 : The Great Divide)
Ps 115:16 says God has given the earth to the whole race of man. There are no distinctions or exclusions mentioned (“other sheep” or “anointed class” – 144000). The earth is mortal man’s as a dwelling place and a place to rule (Gen 1:28).
All true believers look to a heavenly destiny, not an earthly destiny. (Eph 2:19; Phil 3:20; Col 3:1; Heb 3:1; 12:22; 2 Pet 1:10,11; Jn 12:26; Gal 3:29; 4:28-31; Titus 3:7; Jas 2:5)
PSALM 146:3,4The Soul & Soul-SleepIs Man Conscious After Death?
The Watchtower (NWT) renders verse 4 as “… his thoughts do perish.” They claim this proves there is no conscious existence after death.
The Hebrew word for “thoughts” (in context), in this verse, communicates a person’s plans, ambitions, and ideas for the future.
PROVERBS 1-9 (use of metaphors)“Wisdom” referring to Christ?
If “wisdom” in Proverbs 8 is referring to Christ, who is “prudence” in 8:12? Is Christ a woman who cries in the streets (Prov 1:20,21) and lives in a house with 7 pillars (Prov 9:1)?
If “wisdom” is Christ, and the Watchtower says that the “wisdom” in Prov 8:22,23 had a beginning, then they must also believe there was a time when God did not have wisdom.
ECCLESIASTES 9:5The Soul & Soul-SleepThe Dead know Nothing?
Ecclesiastes presents two contrasting ways of looking at man’s plight in the world: secular (worldly), and Godly.
o Verses 1-10 express a strictly human, worldly perspective.
Using the Watchtower’s interpretation, if the phrase “know not anything” means the dead are unconscious in the grave, then the phrase “neither have they anymore reward” means there will be no resurrection or rewards after this life.
The dead are no longer conscious of the physical realm, not that they cease to exist.
ISAIAH 9:6 (reference to Jesus)Jesus is Mighty God
Greek for Mighty God = gibowr ēl
The same Greek phrase is used in reference to Yahweh (Jehovah) in the Scriptures: Is 10:21; Jer 32:17,18
The designation of “Mighty God” is not a lesser deity than “Almighty God.”
Jesus’ equality w/ God (Phil 2:6) is proved here.
Jesus is also called Everlasting Father (literally: He who lives forever) Is 9:6
Jesus cannot be Mighty God separate from the Father being Mighty God. There is only one true God.Is 44:6,8; 45:5,18,21,22; Deut 32:39
**NOTE: Jesus is called both Yahweh (Jehovah) and Elohim (God) in Is 40:3
ISAIAH 40:3 (see Mk 1:2-4; Jn 1:23)Christ is Lord (YHWH) and God (Elohim)
This verse references Christ Jesus as being both Yahweh (Jehovah) and Elohim (God). Jesus is the God of both the Old and New Testaments (covenants)
Also see notes on Is 9:6
ISAIAH 43:10Watchtower: God’s Organization?Witnesses of Jehovah
o Is 43:10 is referring to the Israel nation: to be a witness and to testify that Yahweh is the only true God.o This verse is not fulfilled in any modern day religious group. (WTS is “Scripture-twisting”)o Was God without a witness for over 18 centuries until the Watchtower Society was founded?o The Disciples were witnesses of Jesus Christ and His death and resurrection: Acts 1:8; 2:32; 3:15; 4:33; 13:30,31
ISAIAH 44:24 (see Is 45:9,12; 40:28)Jesus created?
The Watchtower teaches that Jehovah first created Christ and then Christ created everything else (Jn 1:3). This is not possible when it says in Isaiah that “…the Lord (YHWH)… makes all things.”
Also see: Ps 102:24-27; Col 1:15-17
EZEKIEL 18:4The Soul & Soul-SleepDeath For The Soul?
In context, the Hebrew word for “soul” (nephesh) is used in the sense of “living being” or “person”. This is not disputed.
Man’s immaterial nature is not discussed in Ezek 18:4 we cannot draw conclusions about man’s immaterial nature from this ∴verse.
There are other OT passages where the word nephesh (soul) is used in a different sense. In reference to the immaterial nature of man: Gen 35:18 (also see notes on Gen 2:7); 2 Cor 5:8-10; Rev 6:9-11.
DANIEL 10:13Jesus is NOT an angel
Verse 10:13 says Michael is “one of” the chief princes, not “the” chief prince. He is one among equals and therefore not unique. The Greek word used to describe Jesus in Jn 3:16 is monogenes which means unique, one of a kind.
**NOTE:o Jesus is never called “chief prince” in the scriptures and He is not explicitly mentioned in Dan 10:13.o Jesus is however, called King if Kings and Lord of Lords (Rev 19:16; 17:14; 1 Tim 6:15,16)
**Jehovah is called Lord of Lords in Deut 10:17
o An angel cannot be called God’s Son or be worshiped. (Heb 1:5,6 (see notes on Jesus Worshiped); Ps 2:7; Mk 3:11)o Christ’s superiority over the angels written of in Heb 1:5-2:18
Jesus cannot be the archangel Michael.∴
MICAH 5:2Jesus came into being (created)?
Mic 5:2 is a prophecy of the birth place of Christ. This verse is not proof that Jesus came into being at a point in time (“…from of old”). qedem ywmThe Hebrew: “from of old, from everlasting” is qedem ywm. The same phrase is used of Jehovah in Hab 1:12. “Art thou not from everlasting, O LORD my God,…” qedem
Jehovah God is not created, but eternal. Christ is also from days of immeasurable time.
The NWT translates Mic 5:2 as “…whose origin is from early times…”The Hebrew word for “origin” is mowsa˒ah and literally means “goings out (forth)”. The Septuagint also translates the phrase this way: “whose goings forth are from of old (qedem).
ZECHARIAH 12:10God pierced or Jesus pierced?
YHWH is speaking in this verse (context: Zech 12:2-12) Jesus is YHWH. This is against Watchtower theology so the WTS ∴deliberately altered the text to say, “the One whom they pierced through.” The correct phrase “Me whom they have pierced” is a direct reference to Jesus Christ:Jn 19:37; Rev 1:7.
There is no justification for translating this verse as “to the One whom they pierced through.” rather than “look on Me whom they have pierced.” The majority of reliable Hebrew manuscripts support this fact.
Hebrew manuscripts: LXX (Septuagint), Old Latin (version), Syriac Peshitta, Aramaic Targums
Greek versions of: Aquilla, Symmachus, Theodotion
MATTHEW 3:11 (see Mk 1:8)The Spirit a person or active force?
The Watchtower reasons that the Spirit and the water are direct parallels and the Spirit must be an impersonal entity just as ∴water is.
**This logic is ridiculous. Rom 6:3 talks about believers being baptized into death with Christ. Just because death in this verse is not a person, does not imply that Jesus Christ is not a person.
MATT 3:16,17The Trinity Doctrine
The doctrine of the trinity is not based on a single verse.
**See notes on Matt 28:19; 2 Cor 13:14 for scriptural arguments.
The phrase “Son of God” means equality to God. The theological meaning: “of the order of God”: Jn 19:7 (the Jews knew what Jesus was claiming by the words he spoke); Lev 24:16.
Jesus’ preexistence before AbrahamJn 8:54-56,58; Gen 17-19 (see notes on Gen 17:1†)
Holy Spirit is God1 Cor 3:16; 6:19; 2 Cor 3:17; Eph 2:22; Acts 5:1-4
MATT 6:9Sanctifying God’s Name
The Watchtower says the only way God’s name can be “Hollowed” (sanctified) is by calling Him by His true name “Jehovah”, and by treating His name as holy. The WTS claims that superstitious Jewish scribes removed the name Jehovah from the Bible. This is false and there is no evidence to support this claim.
o The NT uplifts the name of Jesus, not Jehovah:I. Meet in Jesus’ name (Matt 18:20; 1 Cor 5:4)II. Demons subject to (Lk 10:17; Acts 16:18)III. Repentance & forgiveness preached (Lk 24:47)IV.To believe on and receive forgiveness of sins (Jn 1:12; 3:16; Acts 10:43; 1 Jn 3:23; 5:13)V. Obtain salvation (Acts 4:12)VI.Bring petitions to God in prayer (Jn 14:13,14; 15:16; 16:23,24)VII. Holy Spirit sent in Jesus’ name (Jn 14:26)VIII. Sick and lame healed (Acts 3:16; 4:7-10,30)IX.Call upon Jesus’ name (1 Cor 1:2)X. Jesus’ name above every name (Eph 1:21; Phil 2:9-11) **Phil 2:9-11 is in reference to an OT passage about Yahweh (Is
45:22-24)
o Acts 1:8 states we are to be witnesses of Jesus Christ, not Jehovah.
MATT 6:10A Paradise on Earth?(see Reference Notes Part 2 : The Great Divide)
This verse does not relate to Gen 1:28 or Is 48:15. There is no contextual evidence to connect the scriptures noted together. Matt 6:10 says nothing of a “paradise on earth”. The Watchtower Society is reading a meaning into the text which is not there.
MATT 10:28The Soul & Soul-SleepThe Soul Exists After Death
The word for soul (psuche) is often used to translate the Hebrew term nephesh into Greek. The Septuagint has the word psuche in place of nephesh in Gen 2:7.
Psuche is clearly used to designate the part of man that continues after physical death. It is possible to kill the body without killing the soul.
MATT 24:45-47Watchtower: God’s Organization?“Faithful And Discreet Slave”
WTS teaching: In contrast to the “faithful and discreet slave”, the “evil servant” in Matt 24:48-51 is said to be the apostate Christendom – all Christian denominations apart from JW’s.
Biblical teaching: Jesus likens a disciple(s) to a servant put in charge of his master’s household. That follower will be either faithful or unfaithful.
This passage in not talking about an organization, but is of an individual basis; those who profess to follow Christ.
MATT 25:46The Soul & Soul-SleepEverlasting “Cutting Off”?
The Watchtower teaches there is no everlasting punishment for the wicked, but they are forever “cut off”.
Greek words in question: aionios (eternal) and kolasis (punishment).**Note: aionios (eternal) is used of God as the “eternal” God in: Rom 16:26; 1 Tim 1:7; Heb 9:14; 13:8; Rev 4:9
o The punishment in Matt 25:46 can’t be defined as non-suffering, unconsciousness. Punishment entails suffering and suffering requires consciousness.
o The Scriptures teach there will be different degrees of punishment on the day of judgment (Matt 10:15; 11:21-24; 16:27; Lk 12:47,48; Jn 15:22; Heb 10:29; Rev 20:11-15; 22:12)o The extinction of one’s consciousness would be a blessing, not a punishment for the wicked.
The punishment of the wicked is just as eternal as the forever existence of our eternal God. The Greek word aionios is used in this verse to describe both the length of punishment for the wicked and the length of eternal life for the righteous.
MATT 28:19The “Name” of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit
The Greek word for “name” is Onoma and is singular, indicating there is one God.
The Persons of God: Gen 1:26,27; 3:22; 11:7; Is 6:8
Who dwells in us? The Father, Son (Jesus Christ), or the Holy Spirit?Jn 14:17,23,26; 2 Tim 1:14
MARK 10:17,18Only God is good
Jesus did not deny his goodness, but in response to the statement, asked the young ruler to examine the implications of what he was saying. “Do you realize what you are saying when you call me good?”
Jesus asked the question, “why do you call me good?” He did not say, “Do not call me good”, because he is good and by accepting the statement, claimed to be God.
MARK 13:32Does Jesus know all things?
With respect to Jesus’ human nature, he was not all-knowing; with respect to his divine nature, He is God and knows all things.
Scriptures which claim Jesus is all-knowing: Jn 2:24,25; 16:30; 21:17; Acts 1:24
Jesus’ all-knowing attribute revealed by scriptural accounts: Jn 11:11; 4:16-18 Matt 9:4; Mk 2:8
Also see: 1 Cor 4:5 (brings to light hidden things); Rev 2:23 (searches men’s hearts); Col 2:3 (all treasures of wisdom & knowledge hidden in him)
Only God knows the hearts of the Sons of men (1 Kg 8:39) since Jesus knows the hearts of men, either Jesus is God or the ∴scriptures contradict themselves.
LUKE 12:32The “Little Flock”(see Reference Notes Part 2 : The Great Divide)
The Watchtower believes this “little flock” is the 144000 who have a heavenly destiny (JW doctrine) – see Rev 7:4.
The context of Lk 12:32 encompasses v.22-34 (13 verses). Jesus was speaking to his disciples (little flock). There is nothing to relate this verse to the 144000 in Rev 7:14.
The disciples are called “sheep” in Jesus’ flock: Matt 10:16; 26:31.
**The idea that entrance into this so-called “little flock” of anointed believers would be closed in the year 1935, is not based on Scripture, but on an alleged ‘revelation’ given to J.F. Rutherford. NOTE: Watchtower Society claims they are the only group on earth that truly follows the Bible.
Jesus spoke of the kingdom of heaven and the kingdom of God throughout his ministry. He never restricted the kingdom to 144000 people, but taught that all people should seek the kingdom and said whoever sought it would find it (Matt 9:35-38; Mk 1:14,15; Lk 12:22-34).
o Who enters the kingdom? The one born of water and the Spirit (Jn 3:5-7).o Who is born again? Whoever believes, not only 144000 (1 Jn 5:1).

The Watchtower Society teaches that pre-Christian saints such as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, & OT prophets are not a part of this “little flock”, but are of the “other sheep” (Jn 10:16) and have an earthly hope, not a heavenly hope.
The OT saints do have a heavenly hope.(Heb 11, emphasize v.13,16) “…a heavenly country.”o Elijah went to heaven (2 Kg 2:1,11)o Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob are in heaven (Matt 8:11)o All the OT prophets are to be with Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob (Lk 13:28)
LUKE 16:22-28The Soul & Soul-SleepAbraham’s Bosom
The Watchtower says this teaching is entirely symbolic & doesn’t indicate conscious existence after death. They say it resembles the following:o Rich man: Jewish religious leaders (Pharisees).o Lazarus: Jewish followers of Jesus – people despised by Pharisees & repented to follow Jesus.o Abraham: Jehovah-God.o The death of each of these people: change of conditions for each group while here on earth. Those once despised now into a position of divine favor; those once favored now rejected by Jehovah-God & became “tormented” by proclamations delivered by those they had despised (the apostles).
If people become non-existent at death, what is the point of Lk 16:22-28? Was Jesus teaching something based entirely on a falsehood? When Jesus taught using parables or stories, He always used real-life situations. Luke 16 portrays a real-life situation and life after death.
LUKE 20:38The Soul & Soul-SleepThe God of The Living
The doctrine of the Sadducees was that the souls of men die with the body. Jesus contradicts their view in this verse. The OT patriarchs are living, even though they died physically. The tense of the word for “living” is present tense (“for all live to Him”).
Only One True GodThe Greek “ho theos”(see notes on John 1:1... “a” God)
The Greek word theos (God) w/o the definite article ho (the) is used here of Jehovah in the New Testament w/ the same Greek construction used of Jesus in Jn 1:1.
If Jesus was only divine in nature and not God, John would have used the word theios (divine, deity) and not theos (God).
One must be consistent with the translation. The Watchtower is not consistent in the application of their rule in which they claim to translate Jn 1:1 as “…a God” (theos w/o definite article ho) in the NWT.
Other scriptural examples of theos w/o def. Article ho, used of God (Jehovah):Matt 5:9; 6:24; Lk 1:35,78; 2:40; Jn 1:6,12,13,18; 3:2,21; 9:16,33; Rom 1:7,17,18; 1 Cor 1:30; 15:10; Phil 2:11,13; Titus 1:1
LUKE 23:43The Soul & Soul-SleepWith Christ in Paradise
In the NWT: “truly I tell you today, …”
The comma is placed after the word “today”, not after “you” (as in all other translations) to keep the thief from being with Jesus in Paradise “today” (which would signify conscious existence after death). The phrase, “Truly, I say to you”, in the Greek is amen soi lego and occurs 74 times in the Gospels. It is always used as an introductory expression. Jesus used it to introduce a truth that was very important. In 73 of 74 times, the NWT places a break (such as a comma) immediately after the phrase. Lk 23:43 is the only exception in the NWT (to support their doctrine).
LUKE 23:46The Soul & Soul-SleepInto Thy Hands I Commit My Spirit
The Greek word “spirit” here is pneuma. In the context, it means His (Jesus’) immaterial soul or spirit.
The Watchtower teaches that Jesus rose from the dead as a spirit being. If in fact He only rose as a spirit (actually raised in the flesh), then man has an immaterial nature that survives his physical death. This contradicts the WTS doctrine that man has no soul or spirit which is separate from the physical body since they teach the opposite regarding the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In contrast, how is it that 144,000 anointed ones are even existent after death when “the dead know nothing” (Ecc 9:5), and their “thoughts do perish” (Ps 146:3,4)? According to the Watchtower, they don’t exist once their physical bodies die there is ∴nothing remaining to resurrect. (Also see Acts 7:59 – Stephen’s plea)
LUKE 24:37-43Jesus raised from the dead in flesh
The Watchtower teaches that Jesus rose from the dead in spirit, not in flesh – contrary to scripture.
Lk 24:37-43; Acts 2:26,27,31; Ps 16:8-11; 1 Tim 2:5
Also see: Jn 2:19-21; 20:17,27; Matt 28:9
**NOTE: The Greek word for “body” is soma and when used of a person always means a physical body (in the NT). NO EXCEPTIONS.
Jesus physically ate food after the resurrection as proof he was physical (raised bodily, not a spirit). Examples are found in these verses: Lk 24:30; 24:42,43; Jn 21:12,13; Acts 1:4
JOHN 1:1Only One True God
“…the Word was with God (ho theos) and the Word was God (theos).”
The WTS teaching ,according to their translation of Jn 1:1, is polytheistic (more than one god) and against the teachings of Scripture which proclaims there is only one true God: Jn 17:3; Deut 32:39; Is 43:10; 44:8; 45:5.There are not two gods, but one true God.
99% of scholars who know Greek are in disagreement w/ the Watchtower translation of Jn 1:1.(“… the Word was a God (theos).”
The Word (Jesus) is God: Jn 20:28; Titus 2:13
Scriptural examples of theos w/ def. article ho, used of Jesus Christ:
Jn 20:28; Matt 1:23; Heb 1:8
Jn 1:1,2 states that Christ (the Word) is distinct from and at the same time equal with God.
JOHN 3:5,6Becoming “Born Again”(see Reference Notes Part 2 : Salvation According To The Watchtower)
The Watchtower teaches that only 144000 (anointed class) are born again, sharing a spirit existence with Jesus in heaven. JW’s also believe you do not need to be born again to be saved and the “anointed class” in heaven will rule over those who live on paradise earth.
The Bible teaches that everyone can be born again (1 Jn 5:1). This is consistent withJn 3:1-21; 3:16 (whoever believes); 1:12,13.
In Jn 3:6, the “flesh” includes what is natural and what is sinful in man. Those in the flesh cannot please God (Rom 8:8).
Jews believe their physical (flesh) relation to Abraham (being his seed - descendants) gave them entrance into God’s kingdom. Jesus emphasized to Nicodemus that a spiritual rebirth was necessary – to be born of the Spirit; to be “born again.”
Jesus was not “born again” as the Watchtower believes.
Jesus, who is eternal God (Jn 1:1; 8:58; 20:28), took on a human nature (Matt 1:23; Lk 1:35; 1 Tim 3:16; 1 Jn 4:2,3).
There is no need for Jesus (God) to be born again. He came to provide redemption (1 Tim 2:5,6), not to receive it. The redeemer did not need to be redeemed.
JOHN 3:16The only begotten Son
Isaac was not Abraham’s “only begotten” in a physical, created sense. Abraham also begat Ishmael. Isaac was “begotten” in a unique or favored sense since through him was the promise and not through Ishmael. (Heb 11:17)
Only begotten does not mean created, but unique, blessed, favored. Through Jesus the new covenant came to fulfillment (the promise given to Abraham - that his descendants would be as numerous as the sands on the seashore).
JOHN 4:23Only the Father worshiped?
The same Greek word proskuneo is used of Jesus Christ being worshiped.
At one time, the Watchtower endorsed the worship of Jesus:o The Watchtower, March 1880, p.83o The Watchtower, 15 May 1892, p.1410…and then years later stated that it is unscriptural:o The Watchtower, 1 Nov 1964, p.671o The Watchtower, 15 July 1959, p.421
Because of this doctrinal change, does that mean earlier issues of the Watchtower magazine were unscriptural? Is the Watchtower a true prophet?
The 1961 NWT says, “”Let all the angels of God worship him.” (Heb 1:6) and then in later translations changed the word “worship” to “obeisance” (reverence, homage), which doctrinally changes the verse to support their bias theology that Jesus cannot be worshiped. Yet, the word proskuneo is correctly translated in the NWT as “worship” when referencing God (Jehovah).
Jesus was worshiped in the NT and always accepted such worship as appropriate.John 20:28; 9:38; Heb 1:6; Matt 2:11; 8:2; 9:18; 15:25; 28:9,17; Rev 4:10; 5:11-14
**Only God can be worshiped: Ex 34:14; Matt 4:10 Jesus must be God.∴
JOHN 8:58Jesus Claims to be God (I AM)
The NWT translates Jn 8:58 as, “… Before Abraham came into existence, I have been” rather than “I AM”. JW’s will say that Jesus was preexistent, but not eternally preexistent (I AM).
Jesus’ statement “I AM” is connected with God’s name in Ex 3:14 (a name indicating eternal existence).
The NWT also mistranslates Ex 3:14 The connection between ∴ Ex 3:14 and Jn 8:58 is removed.
o 1984 version of the NWT w/ references has a footnote on Exodus 3:14 admitting the Hebrew would render into Greek as “Ego eimi” = “I AM”.
o 1985 Kingdom Interlinear Translation of the Greek Scriptures reveals that Jesus’ words in Jn 8:58 are the same “Ego eimi”.o The Septuagint (Greek trans. of Hebrew OT) also renders the phrase in Ex 3:14 as “Ego eimi” = “I AM”.o The words “ego eimi” appear often in John’s gospel and always translate as “I am”, even in the NWT (Jn 8:58 is the only
exception to this in the NWT). The WTS lacks consistency in their translation of Jn 8:58.
Ego eimi (I am) also translated in:Jn 4:26; 6:35,48,51; 8:12,24,28; 10:7,11,14; 11:25; 14:6; 15:1,5; 18:5,6,8
In Jn 8:24, 28, the word “He” is not in the original Greek texts. The verses read:“If you do not believe that I am (ego eimi), you shall die in your sins.” (Jn 8:24) and“… then you will know that I am (ego eimi)”.Jesus was identifying Himself as YHWH. At His claim, the Jews picked up stones to kill him. They recognized Jesus’ identifying Himself as YHWH. They were acting on the due penalty for blasphemy (Lev 24:16).
JOHN 9:35-38Jesus is NOT the archangel Michael
The blind man (now seeing) worships Jesus. An holy angel would not allow any created or uncreated being to bow down and worship him.
In Rev 18:21, an angel of the Lord tells John not to worship him. We are to worship God alone. (Matt 4:10; Lk 4:8; Ex 34:14)
JOHN 10:16The “other sheep” (opposed to 144000)(see Reference Notes Part 2 : The Great Divide)
In context, the “other sheep” is referring to Gentile believers. In the scriptures, the Jews were called “the lost sheep of Israel”(Matt 10:6; 15:24) and those Jews who followed Jesus Christ were called His “sheep” (Jn 10).
Jesus referred to his Jewish disciples as sheep in his flock (Matt 10:16; 26:31). the words of Jesus, “I have other sheep, which are not of this fold” (∴ Jn 10:16) are clearly referencing Gentile believers.
Jews and Gentiles are reconciled in one body (Eph 2:11-22).We are all one in Christ Jesus (Gal 3:28)There is no distinction between Greek and Jew (Col 3:11).
**There will be no distinction between an “anointed class” and “other sheep”. All will dwell together as “one flock” under “one shepherd”.
JOHN 10:30Jesus is God (one with the Father)
At Jesus’ statement, the Jews took up stones to kill him (for blasphemy: Jn 19:7; Lev 24:16).
**Jesus obviously conveyed a lot more by the phrase “I and My Father are one” than simply being one in agreement, purpose, or organization with the Father. The Jews were aware of the claim He made (Jn 10:30).
The context of the Greek word for “one” (hen) is different in Jn 17:21. In that verse, the word hen does convey unity among people.
JOHN 14-16neuter Nouns and Pronouns used of the Holy Spirit?
In the Greek language, all nouns are one of three genders: masculine, feminine, or neuter. These genders are not indicators of sex, but have to do with the form of the words. There are masculine, feminine, and neuter forms, but ‘bread’ (in the Greek) is masculine, ‘head’ is feminine, and ‘child’ is neuter. Therefore, simply because a term is grammatically masculine does not mean it is masculine in gender, because a term is grammatically feminine does not mean that it is feminine in gender, and because a term is grammatically neuter does not mean that it is an “it.”
The primary reason the Jehovah’s Witnesses say the Holy Spirit is an “active force” is that the Greek word for “spirit” (pneuma) is neuter. This is faulty reasoning due to the gender of the word having to do with its grammatical form and not actual physical gender. For example, in scripture neuter terms are used in reference to infants (Lk 1:41,44; 2:16; 18:15), children (Mk 5:39-41), girls (Matt 9:24,25; Mk 5:41,42), unclean spirits (Matt 12:24,27,28; Mk 7:26,29,30), and angels (Heb 1:14). Obviously, each of these beings has personality, even though a neuter term is used in reference to them. Therefore, the use of a neuter term does not indicate a lack of personality and the argument is erroneously made toward the Holy Spirit as not being a person due to the grammatical gender of the Greek word pneuma.
JOHN 14:26Holy Spirit teaches
Also see notes on Gen 1:1,2 for more on the Holy Spirit and his person.
JOHN 14:28Christ is equal to the Father.
Christ is equal to the Father (Jn 10:30; Phil 2:6) with respect to his Godhood, and lesser (a little lesser than the angels – Heb 2:9) with respect to his manhood(Phil 2:6-7)
JOHN 17:3The only true God (Jesus is Jehovah)(see Reference Notes Part 2 : Watchtower: God’s Organization? - Taking In Knowledge)
Is Jesus the true God or a false god? If Jesus is true, and not the same god as the Father, then there are two Gods, which is polytheism. That doctrine is unscriptural because God (YHWH) says He is the only God – there is no other (Deut 6:4; 32:39; Is 45:5,6).
The Greek word for “true” is alēthinos and in this verse means: real, ideal, genuine.
Jesus’ deity: Jn 1:1; 8:58; 20:28
JOHN 19:7The Son of God
The phrase “Son of God” was considered in ancient times to be fully equivalent to “God.” This is why, when Jesus claimed to be the Son of God, the Jews insisted that he (Christ) must die. Recognizing Jesus was identifying himself as God, the Jews wanted to put him to death for committing blasphemy. (Lev 24:16)
Eternal SonshipJesus is the Son of God before his virgin birth:Prov 30:4; Jn 3:16-17; 8:54-58; 11:25-27; Col 1:17; Heb 1:2
** If the first person’s designation as “Father” is an eternal title, then the Son is equally eternal – lest God was not always “God the Father” (having a Son).
JOHN 20:28 (see notes on LUKE 20:38)Jesus is GodGreek (theos) – God
Theos (God) with the definite article ho (the) is used of Jesus Christ in this passage. This verse, in the Greek, literally translates as “the Lord of me and the God (ho theos) of me.”
Other scriptures w/ same Greek phrase:Matt 1:23 (ref.: Jesus)Heb 1:8 (ref.: Jesus)Ps 35:23 (ref.: YHWH)Rev 4:11
The Holy Spirit is GodActs 5:3,4
ACTS 2:4‘Filled” with the Holy Spirit
Eph 5:18 - The Watchtower argues that since all the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit, he must not be a person (a person cannot be in multiple people at the same time).
Eph 3:19 – God fills us (with all His fullness).Eph 4:10; 1:23 – Christ fills all things.
For more on the Holy Spirit, see notes on Gen 1:1,2
ACTS 7:59The Soul & Soul-SleepLord Jesus, Receive My Spirit
The Watchtower teaches the soul ceases to exist after death.
This verse would make no sense if we interpret “spirit” (pneuma) as simply the life-force within Stephen that ceased to exist at the moment of his death. Why would Stephen ask Jesus to receive that which was about to cease existing?
ACTS 8:30,31Watchtower: God’s Organization? The Need For The WTS?
The JW’s cite this verse to support their view that the Watchtower is required in order to understand the Scriptures.
Acts 8:30,31 does indicate that guidance is sometimes needed to help understand since the meaning of some passages are not easily understood (2 Pet 3:16)
The Holy Spirit teaches and guides us(Jn 16:12-15; 1 Cor 2:9-12)
There is no evidence in Acts 8:30,31 of an organization required to teach true followers of God the things of God. In this passage, one man (Philip) preached to an Ethiopian using Scripture.
ACTS 16:30-32Believing on the Lord Jesus(see Reference Notes Part 2 : Salvation According To The Watchtower)
After believing in Jesus and becoming saved, the jailer “was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God (theos).”(Acts 16:34)
o Who did the jailer believe in, Jesus or God? Jesus is God.
Approx. 200 times in the NT, salvation is said to be by faith alone (not by work).
We are to believe in the Lord Jesus for salvation: Jn 3:15; 5:24; 11:25; 12:46; 20:31
Grace vs works: Eph 2:8,9; Titus 3:5; Rom 3:20; Gal 2:16
There is a vast difference between the salvation laid out in the scriptures and that taught by the Watchtower Society literature.
ACTS 20:20Watchtower: God’s Organization?House-to-House Witnessing
In early days of Christianity, there were many small “house churches” scattered throughout the city. Paul’s ministry may have been from “house church” to “house church”.
Being the only organization to preach house-to-house doesn’t make the JW’s the only true believers.
ACTS 20:28Jesus is God/ Purchased by God’s Blood
The NWT adds to the verse the word [son] to read “…purchased with the blood of his own [son].”
The WTS tries to justify this translation by stating that it agrees with 1 Jn 1:7(Jn 3:16 is also used). The NWT goes against all legitimate translations of the Scriptures.
No Greek manuscript contains the word [Son] in this verse. Who’s blood purchased us? Tou theou (of the God) Jesus is ∴here called God. Paul also references this fact in:Rom 9:5; Col 2:9; Titus 2:13 (also read: Col 1:15-20; Phil 2:5-11).
Jesus is the eternally blessed God: Rom 9:5
The forward in the NWT bible says regarding the use of [] in the text, that the word(s) added within the brackets are not to change the meaning, but only to clarify it.
Jesus is…Omniscient: Jn 2:24; 16:30; 21:17Omnipresent: Jn 1:48Omnipotent: Jn 10:17,18; 11
ROM 10:13Calling upon YHWH?(see Reference Notes Part 2 : Salvation According To The Watchtower)
The verse actually reads: “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord (kurios) will be saved.” **This references the OT in Joel 2:32 (speaking of YHWH).
The Watchtower Society inserts the name of Jehovah into Rom 10:13 (NWT) when the name is not there in the original Greek text. In the context of the passage, “of the Lord” (kurios, kyrios) is referring to Jesus Christ (Rom 10:9-13 (v.9))
JW’s Kingdom Interlinear NT shows the Greek word as kurios (the Lord) and inserts “Jehovah” into the text.
“Calling upon YHWH” (Joel 2:32) and “calling upon Jesus Christ” are here equated.
Peter cites the same verse from Joel 2:32 in Acts 2:21 when preaching to the crowd at Pentecost. The “Lord” Peter is speaking of is Jesus Christ (Acts 2:22-36)
Watchtower Society contradiction:The Watchtower, Feb 1, 1980, p.61, said Rom 10:13 was referring to Jehovah. The Watchtower, May 1, 1978, p.12, said Rom 10:13 was referring to Jesus Christ.
Is the Watchtower a true prophet?
1 COR 1:10Watchtower: God’s Organization?Absolute Unity of Thought?
WBTS sees 2 applications for 1 Cor 1:10I. Used to impose conformity on doctrinal beliefs of JW’s.II.Says it proves the JW’s are the only true Christians since they are in “complete agreement” with the Watchtower.
Absolute unity in a group is not proof that that group is the only true Christian body.
The very reason Paul wrote this to the church in Corinth was because they were already lacking in unity (1 Cor 6:13; 8:10; 10:25; 11:2-16; 14; 15). Some were saying, “I follow Paul” and some were saying, “I follow Apollos” and some, “I follow Cephas” and still others, “I follow Christ”(1 Cor 1:12).
This disunity among believers in Corinth didn’t make them untrue Christians. Though they disagreed, they were still Christ’s Church (1 Cor 1:2).
Example of diversity among believers:Rom 14:2-5
1 COR 2:10 (see notes on Gen 1:1,2)The Spirit a person, not an active force
The Spirit searches. The Greek for searches is ereunaō, which means to trace, track, to search, examine.
This word is also used of:God searching the heart: Rom 8:27Christ searching mind & heart: Rev 2:23
In 1 Cor 2:11 it says, “…no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.”
1 COR 8:4-6Jesus is God
It is illegitimate to conclude that Jesus is not God, just as it is to conclude that the Father is not Lord. There are many places throughout scripture where the Father is called Lord and the Son is called God.
Logically, if a person says the Father being the “one God” proves Jesus is not God, then one must also conclude that the reference to Jesus Christ as the “one Lord” proves the Father is not Lord.
The JW’s logic is faulty when using this verse to back their doctrinal belief that Jesus is not God.
The Father is God: 1 Pet 1:2The Father is Lord: Matt 11:25Jesus Christ is God: Jn 20:28; Heb 1:8Jesus Christ is Lord: Rom 10:9
1 COR 11:3Jesus submissive to the Father
Christ & God are equal in their divine being, though functionally, Jesus is submissive to the Father.
For example: men & women are equal in their nature, yet functionally there is a hierarchy between them.
Jn 10:30 says that Jesus and the Father are one. At Jesus’ statement, the Jews took up stones to kill him (for blasphemy – Jn 19:7; Lev. 24:16)
1 COR 12:11The Spirit has a will
The phrase “He wills” translates from the Greek word boulomai – to wish, will. The same word is used of the will of God (Jehovah) in Jas 1:18 “Of his own will…”
1 COR 14:33 (a God of Order)The Trinity Doctrine
Because one cannot fully comprehend a doctrine does not mean it is false. (Rom 11:33; Is 55:8,9; I Cor 13:12)
According to the Watchtower’s book Reasoning from the Scriptures, humans cannot fully understand that God didn’t have a beginning. (God’s eternal nature: Ps 90:2)
Reasoning from the ScripturesIs that reasonable? Our minds cannot fully comprehend it. But that is not a sound reason for rejecting it. Consider examples: (1) Time. No one can point to a certain moment as the beginning of time. And it is a fact that, even though our lives end, time does not. We do not reject the idea of time because there are aspects of it that we do not fully comprehend. Rather, we regulate our lives by it. (2) Space. Astronomers find no beginning or end to space. The farther they probe into the universe, the more there is. They do not reject what the evidence shows; many refer to space as being infinite. The same principle applies to the existence of God.-Watchtower
1 Cor 14:33, in context, is talking about disorder within the church (1 Cor 1:11)
1 COR 15:28The Son subject to the Father
The word “subject” has nothing to do with Christ’s divine nature or being, but with his “functional” subjection to God the Father in the outworking plan of salvation.
2 COR 5:6-8The Soul & Soul-SleepAbsent From Body, Home With The lord
The phrases (in the Greek text) “at home in the body” and “absent from the Lord”, are both present tense.
o The moment a Christian dies, he is immediately in the presence of Christ.o The Greek word pros (with) in the phrase “be at home with the Lord” suggests very close (face-to-face) fellowship or intimate relationship.
Man possesses an immaterial nature that consciously survives physical death.
2 COR 13:14The Trinity Doctrine
The doctrine of the trinity is by the accumulative evidence of the whole of scripture, not based on one verse.

The Scriptures say our salvation is secure:Jn 5:24; 6:37-40; 10:27-30; 17:8-11; Rom 5:1-5; 8:29,30; 1 Cor 1:8,9;2 Cor 1:21,22; Eph 1:4,5; 4:30; Phil 1:6; 1 Thess 5:24; 2 Tim 1:12; 4:18;
1 Pet 1:3-5; 5:10; 1 Jn 2:1,2; 5:10-18; Jude 1
COL 1:15 (…firstborn)Jesus is eternal, not created
The Greek used for firstborn is prōtotokos. This word does not mean “first-created”, which would be the word prōtoktisis.
Prōtotokos means first in rank, pre-eminent one, heir. IT IS POSITIONAL, not physical.
The Watchtower compares Jesus’ position to that of the firstborn of Pharaoh and concludes that the Son is the first one created by Jehovah. This conclusion is erroneous.
Other scriptural “firstborn” (positional) examples are:
David (youngest son of Jesse): Ps 89:27Ephraim (2nd to Manasseh): Gen 41:50,51; Jer 31:9Ishmael & Isaac (Isaac was 13 years younger, but called the firstborn)Esau & Jacob (Jacob becomes the firstborn)
Christ is the heir (firstborn) of all things (Col 1:15; Heb 1:2) & by divine right all of creation belongs to Him since Christ is also the “Maker of all things.” (Col 1:16)
COL 1:16 (see Heb 1:2)Jesus created all things
“…created through (Greek: dia) Him…”
The JW’s claim this is proof that Christ played a “second-hand” role in the creation since God created the world “through” Him.
The same Greek word is used of the world coming in to being through (dia) God. (Rom 11:36)
COL 1:16,17Jesus the Created Creator?
NWT adds [other] into the passage in multiple instances (… all [other] things…). The Watchtower doesn’t want it to appear that Christ is uncreated & that He existed before all things.
o WTS uses 1 Cor 8:6 to support their position that God created the world through (Greek: dia) Jesus Christ.o The word “other” appears in brackets in the NWT. According to the Forward in the NWT, “brackets enclose words inserted to
complete the sense in the English text.” Bracketed words contribute without changing the meaning of the text. The word ∴[other] changes the meaning. (**The 1950 version of the NWT did not put brackets around the word “other” in Col 1:16,17. The WTS own Greek Interlinear shows the Greek word panta means “all” things and not “all other” things.
o Did Christ play a secondary role in creation? NO. The word for through (dia) used in 1 Cor 8:6, though used of Christ’s role as creator: Jn 1:3; 1 Cor 8:6; Col 1:16; Heb 1:2, in the NT, is also used to state that the world came into being through (dia) God: Rom 11:36; Heb 1:2,10.
o Only God is the creator (Gen 1; Is 40; 44:24; Ps 8) and Christ is the Creator of “all things” (Jn 1:3; Rev 3:14).
COL 2:9The Godhead
The NWT renders the verse “divine quality”, not “the Godhead”. JW’s do not want it to appear that the fullness of Deity dwells in Jesus. This would mean Jesus is God Almighty. They will concede Jesus has God-like qualities; that He is “a god” (mistranslated Jn 1:1).
Greek scholar JH Thayer (whose Greek lexicon is called “comprehensive” by the Watchtower Society) states that the Greek word for “deity” in Col 2:9 means: the state of being God, Godhead.
The Bible in Living English, translated by Steven T Byington, was published by the Watchtower Society in 1972 and renders the verse as “In Him all the fullness of deity is resident in bodily form.”
1 THESS 4:13-17The Soul & Soul-SleepThe Dead In Christ Shall Rise First
In the Scriptures, the term “sleep” is always applied to the body alone (the body takes on the appearance of one sleeping).
The term “soul sleep” is never found in the Scriptures and nowhere does Scripture state that the soul passes into a state of unconsciousness.
We do not become unconscious, but when we die, we are with Christ (2 Cor 5:8; Phil 1:22, 23)
1 THESS 4:16 (see Dan 10:13)Jesus the archangel Michael?
The Watchtower teaches that Michael is the only archangel (Aid To Bible Understanding). They say that since Christ returns “with the voice of an archangel”, this means he is the archangel Michael.
If we use the Watchtower’s logic here, we can also say that since Jesus also returns with the trumpet of God, that makes him God.
A person can not use only the portion of the verse which, stripped from its context, supports one’s view.
**Mention that you don’t believe that having God’s trumpet alone means Jesus is God because Christ’s deity is proved in many other passages. However, the Watchtower’s reasoning here in this verse to support their belief that Jesus was the archangel Michael is fallible.
2 THESS 1:9The Soul & Soul-SleepEverlasting destruction?
The WTS teaches the destruction of the wicked is everlasting in the sense that they are forever annihilated and cease to exist. They do not suffer eternal torment.
The Greek word translated “destruction” here is olethros and carries the meaning “sudden ruin” or “loss of all that gives worth to existence.” It does not refer to annihilation, but rather the thought of separation from God & loss of everything worthwhile in life.
The Greek word aionion (eternal) is used in conjunction with “destruction” (olethros). Annihilation, by definition, is instant.
1 TIM 2:5,6The Ransom Sacrifice of Jesus(see Reference Notes Part 2 : Salvation According To The Watchtower)
The Watchtower Society argues that because Jesus is said to mediate “between God and men,” it is clear that He cannot be God.
**The folly in this reasoning: if Jesus as mediator cannot be God, then by the same logic, He cannot be man either. The fact is that Jesus can mediate between God and man because He is both God and man.
o Christ had to be both God and man to secure man’s salvation. If Christ had been only God, He couldn’t have died, since God by His very nature cannot die.o In the OT, the kinsman-redeemer (related by blood to someone he sought to redeem from bondage) would buy him out of slavery (Lev 25:47,48). Jesus is the kinsman-redeemer for sin-enslaved humanity. To become such, Jesus had to become related by blood to man. Jesus became man to redeem man (Heb 2:14-16). Because Jesus was also God, His sacrificial death has infinite value (Heb 9:11-28).
o Only God saves (Is 43:11) a claim to be Savior is a claim to deity since there is only one Savior, that is God. A Savior ∴was born in Bethlehem (Lk 2:11). Jesus is the Savior (Jn 4:42; Titus 2:10-13; 3:4,6)
The Greek word for “a ransom” (antilutron) in 1 Tim 2:6 simply conveys the idea of that of substitution – of Christ taking our place (Mk 10:45).
2 TIM 3:16,17Watchtower: God’s Organization?Is The Bible Sufficient?
JW’s give “lip service” to believing these verses since, in their actions they deny it. They say you cannot become equipped by reading the Bible alone, but require aid from the Watchtower literature. The WTS tells its followers that if, as a JW, one quits reading their literature (even if you continue to read the Bible), he or she will go into darkness.
2 Tim 3:15 indicates that the Scriptures alone were sufficient to provide Timothy with the necessary wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ.
The word “inspired” (v.16) means “God-breathed”. Scripture is sufficient because it finds its source in God.
TITUS 2:13The appearing of Jesus Christ (God)
The Greek word for appearing (epiphaneia) is used by Paul exclusively of Jesus Christ in the New Testament.
2 Thess 2:8; 1 Tim 6:14; 2 Tim 1:10; 4:1,8; Titus 2:13
Our Great God And Savior
The Watchtower mistranslates Titus 2:13 to make it appear that two different persons are in view (God and Christ).
o JW’s attempt justification by asking, “Which rendering agrees with Titus 1:4?”o An OT study indicates only God saves (Is 43:11) a claim as Savior is a claim to deity since there is only one Savior: God. ∴
The NT clearly refers to Jesus as the Savior (Lk 2:11; Jn 4:42).o In Titus 2:10-13; 3:4,6, the phrases “God our Savior” and “Jesus Christ our Savior” are used interchangeably 4 times.
(NOTE: Paul was well trained in the strictest form of Judaism – monotheism).o The verse literally reads, “the Great God and Savior of us.”
HEB 1:5Jesus is NOT the archangel Michael
JW’s believe Jesus was the archangel Michael.
Michael the Great Prince: Dan 10:13,21; 12:1
In Dan 10:13 it says Michael is “one of” the chief princes, not “the” chief prince. He is one among equals.
Heb 1:10-12 says that Christ never changes (also read Ps 102:25-27). Jesus was not created as an angel, becoming totally man, and changing back into an angel again.
**NOTE: The OT reference in Hebrews to Ps 102:25-27 is addressed to Jehovah (adonai – Ps 102:22).
HEB 1:6Jesus worshiped(Jesus is NOT an angel)
The 1961 edition of the NWT translates the Greek word proskuneo as worship, but in the 1971 edition changes the translation to read obeisance (to honor, give homage).
If Jesus is a created being that should not be worshiped, then the Father sinned (which is impossible) by commanding the angels to worship a mere creature. If Jesus was an angel, then the angels were commanded to worship one of their own.
Worship is to God alone. (Ex 34:14; Matt 4:10)
**NOTE: Have the JW read Rev 22:8,9 in their own Kingdom Interlinear Translation where proskuneo is used in the original Greek. An angel told John not to worship (proskuneo) him. This worship the angel refused is the same worship the Father commanded to be given to Jesus.
Unclean spirits bowed down to Jesus and addressed him as the “Son of God.”
The Son is not an angel.
HEB 1:8“Thy Throne, O God…”
WTS mistranslates this verse to take away reference that Jesus is God. The WTS translation, “God is your throne” is grammatically possible from the Greek text, but foreign to the context. All legitimate translations render the phrase as, “Thy throne, O God.”
o Primary purpose of Hebrews is to demonstrate the superiority of Jesus Christ. He is superior to the prophets (Heb 1:1-4), angels (Heb 1:5-2:18), and Moses (Heb 3:1-6).
o Jesus is:Shown to be God’s ultimate revelation (Heb 1:1).Creator and Sustainer of the universe (Heb 1:2,3).Has the very nature of God (Heb 1:3).o Heb 1:6 says Christ is worshipped by the angels. o The phrase “Thy throne, O God if forever and ever” fits the whole context of Scripture:
I. Messiah from the tribe of Judah to reign as a king (Gen 49:10).II. Messiah to have a dynasty and eternal throne (2 Sam 7:16).III. God the Father portrayed announcing installation of God the Son as King in Jerusalem (Ps 2:6).IV.Messiah will subjugate His enemies and rule over them (Ps 110).V. Messiah-King will have an everlasting dominion (Dan 7:13,14).
Also see Lk 1:31-33; Matt 2:1,2,11; 9:35. The kingdom was at the very core of Jesus’ teaching.
Jesus is King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Rev 19:16).
Can only Jehovah-God reign on the throne of God? Jn 16:15; Rev 22:1)
HEB 2:5,8The world in subjection to the Son(Jesus is NOT an angel)
The world is not in subjection to angels, but to Jesus Jesus is not an angel.∴
An angel cannot rule the world. Rev 19:6 says that Christ reigns and scripture repeatedly says He will be ruler of God’s Kingdom.Gen 49:10; 2 Sam 7:16; Ps 2:6; Dan 7:13,14; Lk 1:31-33; Matt 2:1,2; 9:35; Rev 19:6
HEB 13:8Jesus Christ never changes(Jesus is NOT an angel)
Watchtower doctrine holds that Jesus was once the archangel Michael, became totally man, and changed back into an angel again. This contradicts scripture and denies His unchanging divinity.
Heb 1:10-12 says He never changes.
Christ took on human nature, but his divine nature remains unchanged.
JAMES 1:12-15Can Jesus be God if God Cannot be tempted?
If Jesus was tempted in every way as indicated by the Scriptures (Matt 4:1; Heb 2:18; 4:15) and the Scriptures say that God cannot be tempted by evil (Jas 1:13), how then can Jesus be God?
All the related passages (Matt 4:1; Heb 2:18; 4:15) use the Greek word from 'piradzo' which indicates: to test, scrutinize, prove. Jesus was scrutinized by three sources in the Scriptures (the world, the flesh and the devil) and was found to be perfect. But in James 1:13, the related word 'apirastos' is used which means: untemptable or not to be tempted. This indicates that even if Jesus is tested, He will not be able to falter into that temptation.
The Greek word for tempted in Matt. 4:1 is translated “tested”, which is in agreement with the context of the passage in which the Devil was testing Jesus in the wilderness. The Bible does not say that Jesus had every temptation we have, but that He was tempted in all areas of temptation that a man may suffer.
When is a person tempted? James gives us the answer: “But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed” (Jas 1:14). Therefore it is not truely temptation until we act on it.
Athough Jesus was tested by external means, because God has no thought of doing evil, it is impossible for Jesus to have been “drawn away by his own desires and enticed” and therefore cannot be tempted and cannot sin. In the mind of the devil or others who tried to test Him, He was tempted, but it was not a temptation for Him in the sense that He would struggled with the decision of choosing right over wrong. We have that struggle because of our sinful nature and our evil desires, but Jesus, being conceived of the Holy Spirit and not man did not inherit the sinful nature through the seed of Adam. His desires are not evil, but He is holy and there is no darkness in Him.
1 PETER 3:18Jesus raised in flesh, NOT spirit
Jesus was made alive by the Spirit, not as a spirit. He was quickened (raised) from the dead by the Holy Spirit – by whom He also preached to the spirits in prison prior to the resurrection (1 Pet 3:19).
Jesus raised with power according to the Spirit: Rom 1:4
Scripture also says that:o God the Father raised Christ: Acts 2:32; 13:30; Rom 6:4; Eph 1:19,20o Christ raised himself: Jn 2:19; 10:17,18
Jesus was raised a body of flesh (immortal): Lk 24:39; Jn 2:19-21; 20:17,27; Matt 28:9; Acts 2:26,27,31; Ps 16:8-11; 1 Tim 2:5
Jesus physically ate food after the resurrection as proof he was resurrected in the flesh: Lk 24:30,42,43; Jn 21:12,13; Acts 1:4
2 PETER 1:20,21Watchtower: God’s Organization?No “Private Interpretations”
JW’s sometimes cite this verse to support their contention that people aren’t to come up with their own interpretation, but are to give heed to what is set forth by the Watchtower Society.
The verse actually means that prophecies did not stem from the prophets themselves, but ultimately came from God (v.21). This passage is not dealing with how to interpret Scripture, but how it came to be written.
2 Pet 1:20,21 cannot be used to support the WTS view.
o Paul says Christians are to test everything (1 Thess 5:21).o We are to search out the Scriptures (Acts 17:11)o We are to test and examine ourselves (2 Cor 13:5)
1 JOHN 5:6-8 (see notes on Acts 2:4)The Spirit a person or personified?
The Watchtower argues that the Holy Spirit is not a person. Using 1 Jn 5:6-8, they say that since the water & the blood are not persons, yet personified as witnesses, then the Holy Spirit is not a person either.
3 Witnesses of Jesus:
Witness Witness of Witnessed by
Water Baptism Men
Blood Crucifixion Men
Holy Spirit Truth God
*Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth: 1 Jn 2:27; 4:2
3 Witnesses are required by Jewish law: Deut 19:15; Jn 8:17,18
Because water & blood are not persons gives no basis for the interpretation that the Holy Spirit is impersonal. If so, it seems legitimate to charge the bible as misleading due to the many instances within the scriptures where the Spirit is portrayed as having personal qualities & functions (see notes on Gen 1:1,2).
*Jesus is also associated with impersonal items, yet is not stripped of His person.Jesus is called: bread (Jn 6:35), a door (Jn 10:7), a light (Jn 8:12), a rock (1 Cor 10:4), a stone (1 Pet 2:4-8), the way & the truth (Jn 14:6), a vine (Jn 15:1), the word (Jn 1:1)
JUDE 9 (see 1 Thess 4:16)Jesus is NOT the archangel Michael
The archangel Michael dared not bring an accusation against the devil, but said, “the Lord rebuke you!”
By contrast, Jesus rebuked the devil in his own authority on a number of occasions.(Matt 4:10; 16:23; Mk 8:33)
The Greek word used here for Lord is kurios which is the same word used in Phil 2:9-11 (ref.: Is 45:22,23) of Jesus Christ.
REV 1:8; 22:13The Alpha and the Omega
Rev 1:7,8 says someone “is coming”. Who?o Someone who is pierced: v.7o Jehovah God: v.8Is there two coming? No!
Rev 1:8 says Jehovah God is the Alpha and the Omega. Then Rev 22:12,13 (NWT) says, “Look! I am coming quickly… I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last…” so, Jehovah God is coming quickly.
Note the response later in Rev 22:20 (KJV) which says, “Surely, I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.”
Who is speaking in Rev 2:8? Jesus is speaking (the First and the Last…). Who was Jesus identifying himself as being? Almighty God described Himself in the OT using this same phrase (Is 48:12,13; 44:6).
REV 3:14Jesus created?
The Greek for “the beginning” is arche and is used of God as “the beginning and the end”.(Rev 1:8; 21:6; 22:13) God has no beginning, He is eternal.
The Greek word arche has an active meaning of “who begins, origin, source, creator or first cause, ruler or magistrate.”
REV 4:11
All things exist and were created by the will of the Son. The Father did not simply use the Son, who the Watchtower claims is a created being, as a means to create [other] things. By the Lord’s will “all things” exist. (Heb 1:10).The words “O Lord” in the phrase “Thou art worth, O Lord…” is literally translated as“the Lord and the God of us”. ho kurios ho theosDirectly applied to Jesus, Jn 20:28 says,“the Lord of me and the God of me.” ho kurios ho theos**NWT translates the phrase “O Lord” in Rev 4:11 as “…Jehovah, even our God…”
REV 6:9,10The Soul & Soul-SleepSouls Under God’s Altar
The souls exist & are conscious despite that their physical bodies had been slain. We know they are conscious because they “cried with a loud voice” and were spoken to (Rev 6:11).
REV 7:4; 14:1-4144000 in the “Anointed Class”(see Reference Notes Part 2 : The Great Divide)
The Watchtower switches interpretive methodology half way through Rev 7:4. They interpret the first half literally (144000 sealed) and the second half figuratively (12 tribes of Israel).
o The Watchtower teaches that women are a part of the “Anointed Class”.o Scripture says women are excluded from the 144000 (Rev 14:4) and the men will not have defiled themselves with women.
The 144000 men are unmarried or celibate.∴o Scripture states a heavenly destiny waits all who believe in Jesus Christ, not just 144000 individuals. (Eph 2:19; Phil 3:20; Col 3:1; Heb 3:1; 12:22; 2 Pet 1:10,11)o All who believe in Christ are heirs of the eternal kingdom (Gal 3:29; 4:28-31; Titus 3:7; Jas 2:5)All believers (Jews & Gentiles) will be together in “one flock” under “one shepherd” (Jn 10:16) – not one flock in heaven and one flock on earth.
Literal tribes of IsraelProbable reasons why…The tribes of Dan and Ephraim are omitted in Rev 7:o Dan’s tribe was guilty of idolatry on many occasions and as a result were largely destroyed (Lev 24:11; Judg 18:1,30; 1 Kg 12:28,29).o Ephraim, like the tribe of Dan, was involved in idolatry and pagan worship (Judg 17; Hos 4:17).
The tribe of Levi is included in Rev 7:7o The Levites were set apart for priestly duties under Mosaic Law and were not counted as part of the 12 tribes. It is probable that they are now included since their priestly functions ceased with the coming of Christ – the High Priest forever in heaven.
REV 7:9The “Great Multitude”(see Reference Notes Part 2 : The Great Divide)
Watchtower teaches that Rev 7:9 refers to the “other sheep” mentioned in Jn 10:16 and cannot become members of the body of Christ, be born again, etc. (see notes on “The Great Divide” – back page). They are an underprivileged group.Questions:
o Where does it say the great multitude is exempt from heaven?o Where does it say the great multitude is relegated to live on earth?
The vision in Revelation is of a great multitude physically present before the throne and the Lamb, just as the angels in Rev 7:11 are before the throne worshiping God. The Greek word for “before” is enopion. It is used a number of times in Revelation to speak of those in the physical presence of God’s throne (Rev 5:8; 7:11; 14:3).Rev 14:3 is in reference to the 144000 being “before” (enopion) the throne. The word used in Rev 7:9 is not in the sense of “in sight of” (as the Watchtower argues), but in the sense “of place, before someone or something.”
The great multitude is in God’s temple.(Rev 7:15)Where is God’s temple?(Rev 11:19; 14:17)
The great multitude is “before the throne”, “in front of the Lamb”, and they serve God day and night “in his temple” which is ∴“in heaven”.
**Rev 19:1,2 (“...great multitude in heaven”)
REV 14:1-4(see notes on Rev 7:4)
REV 14:9-11The Soul & Soul-SleepTormented With Fire?
The Greek word for “torment” in this verse is basanizō, which means to vex with grievous pains, to torment, to torture. A look at the way this word is used throughout Scripture shows it’s always used in contexts of great pain & conscious misery (Matt 8:6; Lk 16:23,28; Rev 12:2)o The torment in Rev 14 is everlasting. “There is no rest day or night.”o The words “for ever and ever” translate from the Greek “eis aiōnas aiōno” or “eis aiōn aiōn” (“unto the ages of the ages”) & is used to emphasize the concept of eternity. The same emphatic construction is used to speak of the never-ending worship of God (Rev 1:6; 4:9; 5:13), and to describe the eternality of God (Rev 4:10; 10:6)o The phrase “day and night” signifies endless activity. It is used of the never-ending worship of God (Rev 4:8; 7:15)o In Rev 20:10 we’ve the most emphatic expression of unending, ceaseless activity possible in the Greek language w/ “day and night” & “forever and ever” together.o If annihilation is the fate of the wicked, they’d experience rest. Rev 14:11 says they have no rest forever.
REFERENCE NOTES PART 2TOPICAL HELPS
Jesus Is Yahweh
In the NT, no verse says, “Jesus is Yahweh”, but equally no verse says, “the Father is Yahweh.” We are told that Yahweh is the only true God (Gen 2:4; Deut 6:4; Is 45:5,21). Since we know the Father is the only true God (∴ Jn 6:27; 17:3), we can logically conclude the Father is Yahweh. Scripture also says that Jesus is God (Jn 1:1; 8:58; 20:28; Titus 2:13; Heb 1:8). ∴Jesus is also Yahweh.
o A comparison of the OT and NT gives testimony to Jesus’ identity as Yahweh:
1. Christ’s crucifixion: Zech 12:10 (Yahweh speaking); Rev 1:7 **NOTE: the NWT mistranslates Zech 12:10 to avoid the connection w/ Christ.
2. Septuagint (Greek text) renders the phrase “I AM” in Ex 3:14 as ego eimi which Jesus used to identify Himself in the NT (Jn 8:24,28,58)
3. Is 40:3 parallels Mk 1:2-44. Is 6:1-5; 42:8 parallels Jn 12:415. Yahweh gives & preserves life (Ps 119). As does Jesus (Jn 5:21; 11:25)6. Yahweh’s voice vs Jesus’ voice: Ezek 43:2; Rev 1:157. Yahweh & Jesus an everlasting light: Is 60:19,20; Rev 21:23
Salvation According To The Watchtower
o “To get one’s name written in the Book of Life will depend upon one’s works.” (The Watchtower, April 1, 1947, p.204)o Another place references to “working hard for the reward of eternal life.” (The Watchtower, Aug 15, 1972, p.491)o “In all areas of life, we should be prepared to give our very best. We should not be half-hearted about such vital matters.
What is at stake is Jehovah’s approval and our being granted life.” (The Watchtower, May 1, 1979, p.20; cf. The Watchtower, May 1, 1980, p.13)
o The Watchtower Society teaches JW’s that they cannot know for certain if they have salvation.o In Watchtower theology, salvation is not really a free gift. By “free gift”, JW’s mean that Christ’s death only wiped away the
sin inherited from Adam and w/o this work of atonement, men could not work their way toward salvation. A person, by accepting Christ’s “free gift”, now has a chance of salvation, but is not saved by faith in Jesus Christ alone.
The Divine Name (see notes on Ex 3:15; Matt 6:9)
The name Jehovah or Yahowah (Yahweh) derives from the original Hebrew name for God in the manuscripts, YHWH, and the name for Lord, Adonai (which was substituted in public readings for the name YHWH in fear of violating the third commandment (Ex 20:7) by the ancient Jews). Eventually, scribes inserted the vowels of Adonai (a-o-a) within the consonants YHWH. The point is that the term “Jehovah” is not really a biblical term.
o The JW’s will cite Rom 10:13 and Ezek 39:6 to claim that the proper use of God’s “correct” name (Jehovah) is absolutely essential to one’s salvation.
o The KJV bible uses the name Jehovah 4 times (Ex 6:3; Ps 83:18; Is 12:2; 26:4), the New English Bible uses Jehovah twice (Ex 3:15; 6:3), the American Standard 1901 uses Jehovah consistently. No Scholar knows precisely the correct way to pronounce YHWH though many believe it is “Yahweh”. We cannot criticize JW’s for using the term Jehovah where the ∴Hebrew consonants YHWH appear in the OT. They can, however, be proven wrong for their inserting the name Jehovah into the NT. Contention with JW’s isn’t with the term, but how it’s used in their biblical interpretation & theology.

The Great Divide:“Anointed Class” & “Other Sheep”
Watchtower claims the “Anointed Class” is the 144000 JW’s who go to heaven.(Rev 7:4; 14:1-3)
All other JW’s are a part of God’s “other sheep” (Jn 10:16 - misinterpreted) and live forever on a paradise earth. Only those “born again” – thereby becoming “sons” of God – can share in this heavenly kingdom (Jn 1:12,13; Rom 8:16,17; 1 Pet 1:3,4)
The 144000 of true believers (Lk 12:32) allegedly began with the 12 apostles and was filled by 1935 AD (Judge R.F. Rutherford received ‘revelation’).
Most JW’s are not members of the “Anointed Class”. The Watchtower teaches that only members of the “Anointed Class”:o Become born again (Jn 3:3-8; Titus 3:5; 1 Pet 1:3; 1 Jn 5:1)o Become adopted as “sons” of God (Jn 1:12,13; Rom 8:14-17; Gal 4:6,7; Eph 1:5)o Are brothers w/ Christ (Rom 8:29; Heb 2:11-17; 3:1)o Are conformed to Christ’s image (Rom 8:29; 2 Cor 3:18)o Are in union w/ Christ (2 Cor 5:17; Eph 1:3)o Are heirs w/ Christ (Rom 8:17)o Are members of New Covenant (Lk 22:20; Heb 12:20-22)
o Can partake of the Lord’s Supper (Lk 22:15-20; 1 Cor 11:20-29)o Are baptized into Christ’s death (Rom 6:3-8; Phil 3:10,11; Col 2:12,20; 2 Tim 2:11,12)o Are members of the church (Eph 1:22,23; Col 1:18)o Are members of Christ’s body (Rom 12:5; 1 Cor 12:13; Eph 4:4)o Are members in God’s temple (1 Cor 3:16; Eph 2:20-22; 1 Pet 2:5)o Are members of Abraham’s seed (Gal 3:26-29; 6:15,16)o Are members of the royal priesthood (1 Pet 2:4-9; Rev 1:6; 5:10)o Are justified by faith (Rom 3:22-28; 5:1; Titus 3:7)o Are sanctified (1 Cor 1:2; 6:11; Eph 1:4; Heb 12:14)o Receive glorified bodies (1 Cor 15:40-54; Phil 3:21)o Enjoy life in heaven (Jn 14:2,3; 1 Cor 15:50; 1 Pet 1:4)o Will rule w/ Christ (1 Cor 6:2; 2 Tim 2:12; Rev 20:6)o Will see Christ and God (Matt 5:8; 1 Jn 3:2)
Watchtower: God’s Organization?Taking In Knowledge
WTS claims John 17:3 points to the need of the Watchtower’s Bible Study to “take in” knowledge of God, which leads to salvation.
o NWT mistranslates this verse. The verse is more literally translated from the Greek, “Now this is eternal life: that they may know you.” This talks of personal knowledge of God, not general knowledge of the Bible.
o Greek word for “know” indicates intimacy w/ another person.o General knowledge of the Bible is insufficient in itself to save (Jn 5:39,40; 2 Tim 3:7; Jn 14:6; Acts 4:12)o Jesus is the Savior of the world, not the Scriptures (Jn 3:16; 4:42; 6:33; 1 Jn 4:14; 5:20)
