Mary and I just got home from a trip in which we enjoyed seeing Beavers from all over the United States and Canada, as we at-tended a number of rallies in the Midwest. We are for thankful for

the Rally Masters and Co-Rally Masters who make our rallies possible.

You should have received a ballot by email or regular mail asking for your vote on a most important question for our club’s future. Included with the ballot was a letter from me outlining the need for this election. Please con-sider the matter carefully and return your ballot by email or regular mail as soon as possible. A Tally Committee will count the ballots at our Beavers-n-Campfires Rally this January and the results will be announced at the corporation meeting in Las Vegas. A special thank you to George Morlan and Tim Bentley for the work they have done in making it possible to have this election conducted almost entirely online.

A Lil’ Bit of Branson was a very enjoyable Interna-tional Rally. Lamar Keck and Karen Rogers kept us well entertained and well fed for eight days in Bran-son. A lot was accomplished at the BAC Board of Directors and Corporate meetings. The special elec-tion mentioned in the above paragraph was one of the results of these meetings. Well deserved notes of appreciation are due to the board members and especially to retiring Vice Presidents Gerald Far-ris and Roy Warren. They have both given a lot to our club during their two-year term of office. The results of the last election were announced by the

Tally Committee at the Corporation Meeting. Con-gratulations to all former Associate Members, who

were given full membership in the club. Congratulations also to newly elected Vice-Presidents, Mike Humble, Garland Land and Rett Porter. All three are already busy planning rallies.

The Beaver Ambassador Club’s next International Rally, Beavers Do Las Vegas, is coming up fast. Roy and Vicki Warren, with help from Doug and Nancy Strand, and Bill and Karen Maloof are working on what promises to be a great rally. Bill Osborne, CEO of Monaco RV LLC plans on spending a day with us in Las Vegas. We want him to experience the BAC culture, for which we are known. Be sure and read about the rallies before and after Las Vegas. Jim and Natasha Nichols are planning a pre-rally called Rally of Ex-tremes: Hottest, Driest, and Lowest in Death Valley. Mike and Prudy Ran-dolph have made arrangements for a post-rally called Mesa March Madness that will be very interesting. This will be followed by Traveling the ol’West in Tucson, arranged by Dan and Bonnie Savard. It looks like we will have fun this spring in the Southwest.

Wishing you all safe travels, and I hope that we will cross paths this coming winter or spring. Mike

Sites to see before, during, and after the Revolutionary Beaver International Rally

The Revolutionary Beaver Rally is being held Sep-tember 10th to the 14th, 2012 at Croton Point Park, NY. This 508 acre park is situated on a peninsula on the eastern shore of the Hudson River in Westchester County. Croton Point has been inhabited for over 7,000 years. Indians of the Kitchawank tribe of the Wappinger Confederacy occupied a large fortified village on the high flat at the neck of Croton Point, which they called Navish. This was one of the ancient and formidable Indian fortresses south of the Hud-son Highlands.

It is not surprising that this prominent site played a role in the American War for independence. Sev-eral military actions took place here, and many in-volved invasion by the British. The most notorious was connected with the attempted betrayal of West Point by Benedict Arnold and the capture of his Brit-ish confederate, Major John Andre. Andre had con-spired to meet with Arnold on board the British frig-ate Vulture, which had anchored off the western end of Teller's Point in September of 1770. Fearing for his safety, Arnold sent word to Andre to meet him on the western shore of the Hudson River near Haverstraw. While they were meeting on the opposite side of the river, American Militiamen on Verplanck's Point fired upon the Vulture with a small canon, forcing her to move downstream. Major Andre, separated from his means of escape, crossed the Hudson at King's Crossing, clad in an American uniform and carrying a pass stating he was on official business for General Arnold. He was captured in Tarrytown and subse-quently hung as a spy. The canon that fired upon the Vulture is on display at the Peekskill museum.

Westchester County is just north of New York City; which is simply known as the “City” to those who live in the area. The county is rich in history, and has many historic mansions which may be toured. It is the home of Washington Irving, author of The Headless Horseman, Rip Van Winkle and many more stories. Irving's home is located approximately 15

miles south of Croton Point, and is open for tours. Several other mansions, including Kukuit, home of the Rockefellers, are available for tours as well. The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) is located in pastoral Hyde Park, NY, on the Hudson River's east bank, approximately one hour north of Croton Point on U.S. Route 9. The CIA's New York campus oper-ates five award-winning, student-staffed public res-taurants. Springwood Estate, the birthplace, lifelong home, and burial place of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, is also in Hyde Park. We will have a complete list of sites in the rally packet.

Across the Hudson River, on the western side, are several Revolutionary War forts. Stoney Point and Fort Montgomery are two within easy reach; and of course, West Point, America's first military college, which we will tour during the rally. We will also be taking a paddle boat dinner cruise up the Hudson to West Point. Bear Mountain and Harriman Parks are just south of West Point and can provide lots of enjoyment, with pre-revolutionary iron mines, a zoo, and a lookout that provides spectacular views of the Hudson and surrounding areas.

For the more adventurous, there is a train at the en-trance to Croton Point that will take you into the heart of the City. Tickets for seniors are twelve dollars round trip, off-peak. There are too many museums, shopping and restaurants to mention here. Plan on a full day if you are heading into the City. We’ll provide additional information on the City in the rally packet.

Although there will be some “on your own” time to explore during the rally we suggest spending a few extra days at the Croton Point campground to ex-plore the area. I (Tom) grew up across the river in New Jersey and attended school in NYC. Having spent over forty years in the area, I can truthfully say that I have just scratched the surface of what the area has to offer.

We hope to see many of you at the Revolutionary Beaver Rally,

Tom and Lynn Crowley

North West VP's Report

To all Beavers: remember Beavers are friendly. In the last couple of days Donna and I have made two new Beaver friends

by just walking up and introducing ourselves. As it turns out, both were BAC members, and we know we will meet them again down the road, and have more great experiences. Please greet the next Beaver you see and meet a new friend.

Since the last issue of Beaver Tales, we have done some traveling. We first attended, as rally masters, the Golf Till You Drop rally in Lebanon, OR. We had great help from co-rally masters, Judy and Steve Bertelson. Everyone had a great time with lots of golf. From there we headed across the North-ern U.S., and ended up at the Branson International Rally. Lamar, Karen and their co-rally masters did a wonderful job, with lots of entertainment.

It is great to announce four new rallies in the NW next summer. In June there will be a rally in Sis-ters, Oregon, the "Do Nothing Rally," hosted by Bill and BJ Sprague and co-rally masters Gary and Tammy Lamb. This will be a little different than most rallies. It will be a nothing planned rally with nightly socials. There are many things to do and see in Central Oregon, so you can plan any activities during the day, and get together with fellow Beavers at night. Bill and BJ, along with Marty and Suzie Schenck, as co-rally mas-ters, have planned another low cost rally in Au-gust, that will give Beavers the opportunity to "Explore Mt. Rainier" National Park. This rally will be held at the beautiful Crystal Mountain Re-sort, and will be dry camping only. There will be a “dry camping tips” talk for both experienced RVers and “newbies.” These two rallies are the

result of a mailing Bill and BJ sent to all Region 1 members, after starting a thread on the forum. There was great feedback, with many responses favoring lower cost rallies that have flexible ac-tivities. Their mailing also stimulated discussion about other future rallies. Thanks, Spragues, for a great idea and the follow through.

The 2012 BAC Open will be held June 24-28. This will again be at Mallard Creek Golf and RV Resort. Doug and Nancy Strand will be first time Rally Masters, and be assisted by Dick and Pat Simonis. This will be limited to 12 coaches, so sign up quickly. In early September Ray and Jan Mosbrucker will be doing a rally in Golden-dale, WA. This area of the Columbia Gorge offers many things to do. The rally features a tour of Maryhill Museum with lunch at the winery. There will be many optional activities. Ray and Jan are also first time rally masters.

Planning is underway, and the formal announce-ment will be made in the next Beaver Tales, for the upcoming BAC 30th Anniversary Rally. This special rally is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 11-15, 2013 at Riverbend RV Resort in Harrisburg Oregon. Vendors and seminars will be a signifi-cant part of this rally. This is a good time to plan other rallies in the area leading up to or following this International Rally.

We always need volunteers to be rally masters or co-rally masters. If you have an idea for a rally, or want to help put one on, contact me or Bill Sprague, Region 1 Director, so we can help you plan.

Finally, you should have received notification of the election for a change to the by-laws regard-ing membership. I urge you to vote, and if you have any questions please contact me. Hope to see you at an upcoming rally and meanwhile, safe travels.

ship they provided the BAC during Roy’s terms as Director and VP. I will do my best to follow in his footsteps. Fortunately I have my wife, Dorothy, my director, Jim Nichols, and his wife, Natasha, to assist me.

Dorothy and I joined the BAC in 2001, but we didn’t get involved until we retired in 2003. Since then we’ve attended 67 rallies, which in-cluded 8 round trips from California to the east coast, and two trips to Alaska. We hope to attend many more during my 2 year term as VP. I plan to be at all Region 2 and International rallies.

There are 6 Region 2 rallies coming up. The first is Natasha and Jim’s “Beavers W(h)ining and Crabbing” rally in Bodega Bay, CA. You will enjoy wine tasting, a crab dinner, a seafood dinner and breakfasts cooked by Carrol Nelson and his team. Those who want fresh crab can go on the optional 2 hour trip out to sea and get your own. With many other optional activities like sailing, kayaking, fishing, golfing, horse-back riding, beachcombing and sightseeing it promises to be a unique fun rally. When this rally ends, the Nichols “From Bodega to Paso” rally begins. It is a 5 day rally, 2 in Bodega Bay and 3 days in Paso Robles. It will give you time to relax and unwind before the annual Christ-mas Rally.

Mary and Mike Collins are the rally masters for “Wine Country Christmas” in Paso Robles. One highlight of this rally is the very popular “Vine Street Victorian Showcase”. There will be carolers, dancers, storytellers, musicians and bands strolling along Vine Street, where the Victorian homes are lighted for the Christ-mas season. It promises to be a fun enjoyable evening, even when Scrooge shows up. You will be treated with catered dinners, breakfasts prepared at the RV park, wine tasting, enter-tainment on glitz night. It will be a wonderful way to get into the holiday spirit.

We start the New Year with Mandy and Violet Canales’s “Western Pirates” rally in Indio CA. This is a rally held in conjunction with the West-ern Area FMCA Rally. Read Mandy’s article and be sure to sign-up for both rallies. I hope to see you there. I’ve attended it for the past 8 years and it’s one of my favorites.

Before going to the glitz and glamour of Las Ve-gas, why not come to the the hottest, driest, low-est place in North America, Death Valley. Sign-up for another Nichols rally, “Rally of Extremes”. This one is dry camping at Sunset Campground in Death Valley on March 14-17. The weather should be mild, the sunrises and sunsets beau-tiful, the sky sparkling with stars, the peaks painted a rainbow of colors and the wildflowers spectacular. Since the Nichols visit Death Valley almost yearly they know where to go and what to see in this vast National Park. On the 18th we depart for the Las Vegas International rally.

The next BAC International Rally is “Beavers Do Las Vegas” on March 20-25. Roy and Vicki Warren are the rally masters. You don’t want to miss this rally. Besides the usual seminars, craft lessons, golf, meetings, dinners and breakfasts; the Warrens have planned activities unique to Las Vegas. One special event will be the lively auction, where you can bid on beautiful hand crafted items. Those on the Glaciers & Griz-zlies Rally know how much fun this auction will be. Many of the items are unique and will only be available at the auction. Don’t miss out, sign-up for “Beavers Do Las Vegas.”

It’s time to plan more Region 2 rallies. I have some ideas, but I need people to volunteer to be rally masters. If you’ve never been one and are hesitant, let me help guide you through the pro-cess. It’s not as difficult as it seems. Call me, 209 815-0889, or email me, [email protected], with your rally ideas.

I would like to close by thanking you for your vote and asking for your support during my term as Region 2 VP. Also, if you have not already voted in the special bylaw election to allow a limited number of non-Beaver diesel coach owners to join the BAC, then please vote before the Dec. 15th deadline. Let’s see if Re-gion 2 can have the highest percentage of its members VOTE.

Hope to see you at a rally soon,

Garland

Don't Forget to VoteIf you have not yet cast your vote for the new bylaw change, the deadline is fast ap-proaching. Votes must be emailed or post-marked by December 15, 2011. Contact George Morlan if you lost your ballot.

This is an important decision for our club. The change allows BAC members to recommend owners of diesel motorhomes other than Beavers, for membership in the Beaver Ambassador Club.

G reetings from sunny Florida! Betsy and I are finally beginning to enjoy our stay here, after two trips to Lazydays service, a

repair in their body shop, and a quick stop at Josam’s Frame and Alignment. We are currently staying at The Great Outdoors, visiting Beaver friends here for a few days before we move to Lake Wales for the months of November and December. In January we plan to start our trek west to the Beaver International rally, hosted by the Warren’s in Las Vegas in March; enjoying the gulf coast, southern Texas, and Arizona along the way. Since my last article, Region 3 sported 4 rallies and the FMCA’s Family Reunion in Madison, Wisconsin. Lamar Keck and Karen Rogers kicked things off with their Livin’ in a Small Town rally in Lamar’s home-town of Knapp, Wisconsin. This popular venue, along with the Keck-Rogers magic, produced a great rally. This event was followed by the Wisconsin Dell’s vol-unteer rally with Betsy and I as rally masters (ya, sure, you betcha!). Most attendees went on to the FMCA Reunion to volunteer on Mandy’s security team.We then took a small group on a rolling rally through northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to Ted and Fran Klimowski’s Michigan Northern Beauty rally in Petoskey, Michigan. This rally, with events in Harbor Springs, Charlevoix and on Mackinac Island, was excellent, and truly show-cased northern Michigan’s tourist areas. Great job Ted and Fran! I can’t thank the Keck-Rogers team, the Klimowski’s and all our rally masters enough for their efforts in making our rallies so successful, and such an important element of our club.

Next year, the Gerber’s are planning another tailgat-ing affair in Canton, Ohio. This ala cart rally will fea-ture events associated with the Hall of Fame football game and local entertainment opportunities. Pat and Gary are great rally masters, so don’t miss this one. Betsy and I are running the Beavers in Bean Blossom rally in Bean Blossom, Indiana, ahead of the FMCA Family Reunion rally in Indianapolis, Indiana. If you enjoy Bluegrass, this is place to be. Spontaneous jams and scheduled entertainment will keep you busy and entertained. This venue sells out every year and all sites must be confirmed early, so we will not be able to take any reservations after April 15, 2012 (or earlier if the campground fills). Sign up soon. There will be sufficient time between the Canton rally and the volunteer rally in Bean Blossom to at-tend the Caterpillar rally in Goshen, Indiana. There are also a number of Beavers that are planning a small “gathering” in the Chicago area between these events to visit the city of Chicago’s many attractions. The campground’s location for this layover is close to train access to the city. Unfortunately, the campground’s reservation policy made an actual rally event here im-possible.Volunteers will caravan to Indianapolis for the FMCA rally immediately following “the Bean”. Please con-tact Mandy if you can volunteer. Peter and Con-nie Bradish will then take a group of Beavers to the Revolutionary Beavers International rally in Croton-on-Hudson, New York, from the Indianapolis FMCA Reunion. Peter and Connie are seasoned rally masters and always put on great rallies. Please see ads in this issue of the Beaver Tales for the details on all of these rallies. That’s it from Region 3. Betsy and I wish that all of you have a great winter and wonderful holiday sea-son. Until we see you again, keep safe.Tim

A Place for Everything, Well Almost By Mary Findley © 2011 Mary Moppins

George Eliot once said “Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.” Mr. Eliot must have penned this after observing the countless snowbirds headed south each fall seeking to extend the fall weather. Our winged friends travel lightly as the earth supplies their ev-ery need. Two legged ones must haul their livability items with them sometimes under crowded conditions much like baby birds who have outgrown their nests. In celebration of autumn and releasing what is no longer needed, let’s look at ways to shed a few things that perhaps have not been used recently, and free some additional space. As you pull items from their resting place, search for anything unusual like dark spots, which could indicate mold; bumps where the surface should be flat; unusual odors or any oddities. Check switches and outlets for dark marks that could mean an electrical problem.

Three ring binders: Rather than store entire magazines grab two three-ring binders, a three-hole punch and divider sheets. One binder stores outside maintenance articles and the other is used for inside tips. Label the divider sheets into general categories, remove and file the articles. Next add a columnar pad sheet to the front of each binder. Across the top, list oil changes, tire pres-sure, or other vital information necessary for your coach’s general maintenance. Alternately, scan articles into a computer under appropriate file names. Jump Start: Begin this project by measuring the width, length and height of draw-ers, cabinets and closets. When taking the measurements, look at those spaces from the eyes of a stranger. Where can storage be added? Can anything be improved? Take a picture of the space with your cell phone. When you kick around hardware stores or kitchen and bath shops and see a storage idea, you have the picture of the space and measurements. Look around these shops with the inquisitive eye of a young child. Children have no idea that a mesh bag is for laundry. To them, it’s a storage haven for toys or a tote for beach toys. Clear the clutter: Clearing clutter always lands on the “I’ll do it later” list. Right … and one legged ducks swim in circles. Let’s meander through the inside of a coach. Since the binders are ready, tackle any space that contains papers or magazines. Sort, file or shred. I’m not sure how things manage to multiply inside dark areas but open any kitch-en drawer and you’ll find the evidence. As you go through the drawers, remove

anything you haven’t used in the past two years. Empty the drawer then clean it with a bees wax based wood cleaner that does not contain petroleum distillates. Tuck in drawer organizers if needed and enjoy the new found storage space. Next hit the spice cabinet and replace any spice a year or more past its expiration date. Rather than buy new bottles, empty the bottles and refill them with bulk herbs. Our country would be relieved of millions of herb bottles if each household across America followed this easy idea. Open cabinets and haul everything out. Sort toss or donate any item that has gathered dust for the past two years. An item called "Fridge Binz" comes in various size con-tainers to hold different size refrigerator cartons. They are great for cabinets and some are stackable. Or try the "Gravity Feed" an rack to store three layers of canned goods. Double decker pull out drawers tuck inside bathroom cabinets. The smaller size is great for personal care products. Take a look online at www.containerstore.com for more ideas. Dimensions are stated.Closets: The routine remains the same. Remove everything from the closet. Toss, sort, then clean the shelves. Don’t forget the wonders of Velcro. Attach shelf brac-ing to the upper sections of closets - check the blueprints for wiring or pipes before drilling holes for the braces. Place a pull out drawer on top of the brackets and attach it to the wall with heavy duty Velcro. Use additional Velcro to hold the drawer shut during travel. Plastic craft boxes or fishing tackle boxes double as storage units for sewing items and first aid kits. The tops are flat so stack them. Secure them to prevent shifting during travel.Closet Maid, found at hardware stores, has a great wire storage basket that can be mounted on the upper wall of the closet for additional storage space. The front of the basket is open for easy access with a lip to prevent items from tumbling out. Tuck less used items inside the baskets. Grab your imagination, your cell phone with pictures of your cabinet space, and the measurements, and explore the endless storage possibilities. Other than the usual inside cleaning, your coach is ready either for winter stor-age or snow birding down south. (You can reach Mary through her website www.goclean.com or call 800-345-3934.)

To the members of Region 4, I would like to say, “Thank you,” for trusting me as your Vice President for the next

two years. Gerald Farris has set high stan-dards for me to follow. Gerald and Glenda will still be active in BAC: Gerald is Forum Technical Moderator and Glenda is the Fo-rum Administrator. They are both dedicat-ed to providing their expertise to BAC and respond almost immediately to the needs of our members.

My term started out great, with three suc-cessful rallies: 1) Enchanted Santa Fe includ-ed a tour of the city, catered dinner, break-fasts, and a golf outing. Claire and I were rally masters with Gary and Pat Gerber as our co-rally masters. We had a terrific time, including a presentation from the owner at Santa Fe Skies RV Park about the recently installed solar panels. They are producing enough electricity for the RV park to re-duce the $9,000 monthly electric bill down to $108, which allows them to keep their site charges reasonable. The game night was also a successful evening of Mexican Train, Hand and Foot, and Texas Hold’em, with al-most everyone participating in one game or another. 2) Enchanted High Country II oc-curred simultaneously with Enchanted San-ta Fe, and was hosted by experienced rally masters, Harry and Judy Reisch, and sup-ported by co-rally masters, Mike and Mary Engen. They had a great time on the Cum-bres & Toltec Scenic Railroad trip, and vis-iting Taos and Chama. 3) Balloons Galore, with George and Bev Morlan as rally mas-ters, started out with weather challenges, but ended up with a very exciting weekend, with two complete mass ascensions. Over 500 balloons filled the skies; we enjoyed fantastic fireworks in the evenings, as well as a Glowdeo, with 100s of balloons light-ing the fields. Co-rally masters were Lamar Keck, Karen Rogers, and Ken and Ann Sair. A luncheon for all at El Pinto was a high-light. Even though the weather didn’t coop-erate at the beginning, everyone made the best of the situation, and spirits remained high. The last two days fulfilled everyone’s wishes, and the pictures speak for them-selves. Another successful Balloon Fiesta!

Region 4 has four rallies scheduled and

advertised in this Beaver Tales: 1) Beaver-n-Campfires II is in Quartzsite, AZ in Janu-ary with rally masters, Gene and Mary Ward and co-rally masters, Jim and Natasha Nich-ols, and John and Dee McClure. Quartzsite has unlimited attendance, but they would like to know who is coming by the deadline, so be sure and sign up now for a wonder-ful time dry camping in the desert. 2) Mesa March Madness follows the Las Vegas Inter-national rally. Mike and Prudy Randolph, rally masters, with co-rally masters, David and Rosa Park, have scheduled a wonderful rally, limited to 20 coaches; so get your res-ervation in soon. 3) Dan and Bonnie Savard will be putting on their first rally, Traveling the Ol’ West, in Tucson, AZ, right after Mesa March Madness. They have experienced co-rally masters, Tom and Lynn Crowley to help them put on a super program, with guided tours of Old Town Tucson and Pima Air Museum, meals, and more at Lazydays "Flo-rizona" (formerly Beaudry RV.) and 4) Aloft in Albuquerque in 2013, where the Morlans will again host the Balloon Fiesta rally.

I encourage you to attend the rallies in Region 4, but remember that as a Beaver member, you can attend rallies anywhere in the country. Rallies that are being planned in Region 4, dates not yet announced, are: South Louisiana Cajun Country in Rayne (the Frog Capital of the World); Colorado in the foothills of the Rockies; 2013 Albu-querque Balloon Fiesta; rolling rally from Albuquerque to Houston in 2013; Christmas lights along the Cane River, Natchitoches, Louisiana; restaurant exploration in San Antonio, TX; and Way Out West in Tomb-stone and Bisbee, AZ. These are going to be some exciting rallies, and we hope you will be part of them and/or will submit plans to me for other rally ideas. See you at a rally soon,RettP. S. I had finished writing this column when I learned that Harry Reisch passed away, Oct 22nd. He had been on oxygen when he and Judy hosted Enchanted High Country II just 18 days before his death, but he always finished what he started, and the BAC was an important part of Harry’s life. Harry and Judy were parked beside us at our very first BAC rally and immediately made us feel part of the Beaver family. He was with us 2 weeks ago at Balloons Galore. Harry’s spirits were high, his humor was strong, and he made the best of every situation. We will miss Harry, and our prayers go out to Judy. Harry is a real loss to Region 4 and BAC. With our love, Rett & Claire

Lil' Bit of Branson International RallyRM - Lamar and Karen

Lots of great food, games, seminars, and entertainment

Imagine a house that has many levels, twists, and turns, and add to that the fact that it is built over a waterfall. The house is

designed in such a way that it brings the out-side in through sight, sound, and smell. Then imagine you are lucky enough to be sitting on one of the many terraces listening to the flow-ing water and drinking in the serenity and en-joying brunch. Fifteen Beavers were fortunate to have this experience in July at Peter and Connie Bradish’s Falling Water rally, which fo-cused on Frank Lloyd Wright architecture. The Bradishes ended the rally with Chef Peter grill-ing bacon wrapped filet mignon for the group. Thank you so much Peter and Connie for this very special rally.

Next was the Rolling Waters rally, again led by Peter and Connie. The final destination was Tim and Betsy Westman’s “Beavers In The Dell” (and what a great rally that was.) There were many fun stops along the way to The Dells: two more Frank Lloyd Wright houses; the Chanute Aerospace Museum; a Birthday celebration; and many great meals at unique restaurants, including breakfast at a German restaurant; lunch at a Bistro; and dinner at a Japanese Steak House. Thanks Peter & Connie for doing two back-to-back rallies and ensuring every-one had fun, and enjoyed wonderful meals.

From Beavers in the Dells we caravanned to the FMCA Rally in Madison, Wisconsin; a very interesting city, with a beautiful state capital. After Madison we spent two more weeks in Wisconsin. The first week we were in the rolling hills west of Madison, in beautiful Amish coun-try. The second week we were in Door County, which is in the thumb of Wisconsin, and sits between the waters of the Green Bay and Lake Michigan. Door County is truly unique, with many light houses, great shopping, good restaurants, and beautiful cherry and apple orchards. You will not find Mickey ‘Ds, Target, or other chains on the peninsula. There is an ordinance that does not allow chains, so ev-erything is locally owned; and that was truly refreshing.

We spent Labor Day weekend with friends on their farm in Iowa, and from there went to

Beavers In Wildwood, hosted by Roy and Carol Mueller. Tom and I thoroughly enjoyed the Cal-laway Nuclear Power Plant tour, which the Mu-ellers had set up for the group. After catching our breath in Wildwood, we headed to Bran-son. Rally Masters Lamar Keck & Karen Rogers made sure we had great entertainment and seminars for the seven (I think) days we were there. After Branson, ten Beaver motor homes laid-over at Tom Sawyer RV Park between Bran-son and their next rally or other destinations. We got together for an impromptu social, and the last night we had potluck.

Our last rally for 2011 was centered around a Mule Days festival. Jim & Gerda Bull hosted the Bulls N’ Mules rally at their cabin in Winfield, AL, on the property where Jim grew up. Our welcome dinner was catered by Jim’s sister, Rita, who made everything from scratch. Not to make you hungry, but we had roast pork, mashed potatoes & gravy, fried okra, cream corn, field peas, green beans, mac n’ cheese, corn bread, and for dessert banana pudding and sweet potato pie. Good thing it was Mule Night Madness (merchandise and food vend-ers) in town, so we could walk off dinner. The next day was the Mule Parade - the mules were first, followed by horses, then tractors. Jim’s brother has a catfish farm and the last morn-ing several people were up early and went with Jim to help catch the fish for our farewell dinner. Thank you Jim and Gerda for this won-derful rally, we all had a great time.

Tom and I are looking forward to the Fall 2012 International Rally, Revolutionary Beavers. It is being held in the historic and scenic Mid-Hudson Valley area of New York state. See the ad on page 4 for information on the rally and the article on page 5 for interesting “on your own” things to do in the area. Peter and Connie Bradish will be leading a rolling rally from the Indianapolis FMCA Family Reunion to the Rev-olutionary Beavers rally. Having recently been on one of their rolling rallies, I can promise you there will be interesting stops along the way with great food. See page 14 for information. Revolutionary Beavers will be followed by the New England Ramble rally, hosted by George & Bev Morlan and June Beaver. See the ad on page 21 for the rambling details.

Tom and I wish you wonderful Holidays and a great 2012,

Lynn

BAC Recipe BoxWe know many Beavers are excellent cooks and have brought some great food to potlucks and socials. Some members have suggested we again include some of these recipes in Beaver Tales as we have room. If you have something you would like to submit, please email me at [email protected]. In this issue, just in time for the cooler weather ahead, Pat Housden has submitted two delicious soups for your dining pleasure.

Rich and Creamy Tomato Basil SoupIngredients: 4 tomatoes, peeled, seeded, diced4 cups tomato juice14 fresh basil leaves1 cup heavy cream 1/2 cup buttersalt and pepper to tastePlace tomatoes and juice in a stock pot over medium heat. Simmer for 30 minutes. Puree the tomato mix-ture along with the basil leaves, and return the puree to the stock pot. Place the pot over medium heat, and stir in the heavy cream and butter. Season with salt and pepper. Heat, stirring until the butter is melted. Do not boil. (Tastes just like Applebees.)

RV Insurance – What is Replacement Cost?by Ron Jarvie

A few weeks ago one of our members, who had gone to Overland Insur-ance for a quote, sent me a copy of the recommendation he had received from Ron Jarvie, along with a note saying that he expected that many, if not most, BAC members did not understand all of the terms that we think of as “replacement cost coverage”, and suggesting that Ron be encouraged to write an explanatory article for Beaver Tales. What follows is Ron’s piece in response to this request.

An editorial on my part: I think this just underlines the importance of dealing with someone who knows what all the terms in the insurance market mean and, perhaps more importantly, is willing to take the time to apply them to each of our individual situations. With my coach approaching the five-year mark, I am certainly going to look to Overland for advice on what I should do when I renew next year. –George Morlan

A ll “Specialty” RV insurance carriers offer some form of "Total Loss Replacement Cost" coverage. The more accurate term would be "Total Loss

Replacement Cost / Purchase Price" coverage, as the form has a “trailing” (purchase price) coverage feature. Most carriers require the coach be purchased new, and the coverage form (endorsement) be placed on the pol-icy during the first two years of ownership. During the first 5 coach model years the carrier will make a settlement based upon the cost to replace your coach with a brand new one. For model years 6 and beyond (the trailing period), the settlement is based upon the original coach purchase price.

The settlement procedure will vary by carrier. Some companies will only pay the current market value (ac-tual cash value) until after the replacement coach is purchased. Some will pay original purchase price and not require replacement, but when, and if, a replace-ment is made, they will pay the difference. Some will continue the “trailing” coverage indefinitely and oth-ers will have a limit (e.g. 10 model years). A review of the coverage form (endorsement) of your policy

would reveal how and for what period the form would apply to you.

The true out of pocket cost, of the “Replacement Cost” form, increases over time. Each year you pay a pre-mium for the coverage, as shown on your policy (e.g. Replacement Cost Settlement - $100). But there is a secondary or hidden cost often overlooked. The form requires the coach be insured at its’ original purchase price and not the current value of your coach. If it were not for this form, you would have been reduc-ing the insured value of your coach each year, to track with the current market value. Remember, your policy cost is heavily based upon the insured value (the value stated on the policy for your coach).

As a last thought for those owners not insured under a replacement cost/purchase price coverage form (en-dorsement), check those values! There is no benefit to being over insured, it only costs you money. Un-der an “actual cash value” coverage form, the carrier is not going to pay more than the current value of your coach. The value showing on your policy only serves as the ceiling the carrier will pay and not the amount they will pay. The contract says they are to pay the lesser of the current market value or amount stated. You want the amount stated (which is the amount your premium is based on) to be as close as possible to the true market value of the coach.

There are additional total loss settlement coverage’s and programs that have not been addressed in this ar-ticle. Most provide a benefit level beyond the “actual cash value” settlement, but fall short of being “replace-ment cost” (e.g. Agreed Value, Purchase Price Guaran-tee & Outstanding Balance).

What a great group of First Timers! We hope you had a wonderful time and will return again soon. Rallies give you a chance to see what a congenial and helpful group we are. If you haven't done so yet, join the fun and sign up for a rally soon and experience the "Beaver Culture." Brinley Thomas

2010 - 2011BAC INCOME AND EXPENSE

Fiscal Year-end Reportand 2011- 2012 Budget

I am happy to report that we closed the fiscal year in the black by nearly $12,000, about

$9500 better than budgeted. Also, we have been able to adopt a bud-get for the 2011-2012 fiscal year that is essentially balanced without having to make significant cuts.

The excellent results for the past year are the result of several things.• Beaver Tales sponsorships and the Editor’s contract were as-sumed to balance out (thus both were budgeted at zero), but the sponsorship income substantially exceeded the expense.• The Overland Insurancearrangement produced sub-stantially more income than budgeted.• Miscellaneousincomefellshort of budget due to the deci-sion of some rally masters to de-vote income from special events at international rallies to charity, rather than to the Club, and we assume this will continue in the upcoming year.• Wedidnothavetospendthe $2500 budgeted for devel-opment of an online election process.• Officer expense for inter-national rallies was higher than budgeted, largely because of a Board decision, after the budget was adopted, to reinstitute the fuel reimbursement program for the Secretary and Treasurer.

Our balance sheet is strong, with over $150,000 in investments. The Board resumed the $3000 grant to each international rally as a way to, over time, return the money in the International Rally Reserve to the members.

As always, I would welcome questions and comments on this report or any other aspect of the Club’s finances.

NATIONAL SCENE The new Executive Direc-tor, Bradford Koshland, took over right after the new year, and wasted no time getting familiar

with the activities and events within FMCA. In his re-port to the Governing Board in Madison, WI he let us know there were many challenges facing FMCA in the future. One of the issues was reducing expenditures. To start with, on June 1st, the 5 directors and he, took a $5000.00 cut in pay. Then on August 1st, he and the Di-rector of Administrative Services took another $10,000 cut in their salary.

Some additional FMCA benefits for our members in-clude the Michelin Tire Advantage, FMCA member-only tours provided by Fantasy Travel, and the FMCA Campground Connection programs.

The total membership in FMCA has taken a big hit in the number of members renewing. Five years ago we had about 120,000 enrollees, and this year we are down to approximately 89,000 coaches. Due to the downturn in renewals, the income naturally has dwindled, which in turn affects the programs/benefits FMCA offers to our members. The program “Dozen Does It” has been re-tained. The essence of this program is, when our chapter (or any chapter) enrolls 12 new members, our chapter receives a prize package, which we in turn use as door prizes at various rallies. Last year our BAC received two such packages. We’re still working on bringing in new members to our chapter. When we go into a campground each one of us is requested to walk around the camp-ground, and when we find a coach that doesn’t have a BAC “egg” on it, knock on their door and talk to them about the advantages and benefits of a BAC and FMCA membership. If you find a non-member, give them a back copy of your Beaver Tales and Family Motor Coaching magazine.

Another program retained is the “5 for 4”, where when you renew for 4 years you get the 5th year free. It’s re-ally worth it.

As many of you know the winter conventions for 2012 and 2013 have been cancelled. The next winter conven-tion will be held in Perry, GA in 2014.

With all the disappointing news above I think we need a little humor herein. There are three religious truths:A. Jews do not recognize Jesus as the Messiah.B. Protestants do not recognize the Pope as the leader of the Christian faith.C. Baptists do not recognize each other in the liquor store or Hooters.

CHAPTER SCENE: Our Beaver Ambassador Club (BAC) will again be providing volunteer services for

the Indianapolis, IN convention in August, 2012. Our pre-convention rally will be held at the Bill Monroe Bean Blossom fairgrounds in Bean Blossom, IN. This is about 50 miles directly south of Indianapolis. You are requested to take advantage of this new type of venue. Reviews of prior events there were given a 5-star thumbs up. I also encourage as many as possible to email me indicating your desire to give some time to our security volunteer program. Just email me and say to “Include me (us) as volunteers”. Tim and Betsy Westman will be the rally masters for the Bean Blossom event. Looking forward to seeing many of you at our rally in Indio, CA or in Quartzsite, AZ.

…until next time… think about the following ponderisms. Why isn’t the number 11 pronounced onety one?Do Lipton Tea employees take coffee breaks? And finally, What hair color do they put on the driver’s licenses of bald men?

FMCA Update: Brad Koshland Resigns

This is an alert to all FMCA members; FMCA Presi-dent, Charlie Schrenkel, has reluctantly accepted the resignation of Bradford Koshland, FMCA Executive Director. Herein is part of Brad’s resignation letter.

“It is with very mixed emotions that I write this letter and offer my resignation from the position as Execu-tive Director of FMCA. During the past two months, three employees working for FMCA have lost a par-ent. In one case, John Renda wrote after the death of his father that, ’he lost his best friend, but at least he was able to spend some quality time with him.’ John’s statement really struck home with me. I too have a best friend, and like John, it is my father. Since my mother passed away in December 2010, I have only been able to spend one day with my father in July of this year. My two brothers have taken on the responsibility of my father and have taken him to their respective residences this past year to spend considerable and quality time with him prior to his demise. In a recent conversation with my father, he kept asking about when I will be able to see him and for how long. In light of his plea to see me, along with my desire to reciprocate seeing him and spending some quality time with him, my last date of employ-ment will be November 30, 2011. I also need to focus on my other best friend, which is my wife Diana. She has made some personal sacrifices without me be-ing a part of her life for 2011, while she looks after her soon to be 92 year old mother in Daytona Beach, Florida. So my leaving FMCA is for personal reasons and nothing else.”

Sponsor Spotlight

BAC thanks Jim Sizemore of RV Outfitters, Inc., and Greg Fulton Fine Woodworking for their continued sponsorship.

Having worked in the RV industry for more than a quarter of a century, there is not much that Jim

Sizemore of RV Outfitters, Inc. and Greg Fulton of Greg Fulton Fine Woodworking hasn’t seen. From working in the Beaver Coach production facility in the 80’s, to running our own shops now; the world of recreational vehicles has evolved into more than going “camping.” It is now a lifestyle for thousands of people, and we are remodeling their homes! With the current state of the world-wide economy, it makes even more sense to make changes to the coach you have now, rather than trading it in and buying another one; especially since so many of the manufacturers have gone out of busi-ness.

The reasons our customers come to us to work on their coaches are very simple. (1) The level of craftsmanship is exceptional, (2) Our work looks like it was done by the factory when the coach was first built, (3) Cleanli-ness and professionalism are stressed at all times, and, (4) We have a lasting relationship with all of our cus-tomers, that has, in many cases, turned into friend-ships. Oh, (5) last but certainly not least, we are a val-ue! We can give you the coach and amenities that you want, at a fraction of the cost of changing vehicles!

From custom cabinets, to outside entertainment cen-ters, we can provide you with any of the added fea-

tures you are missing now. Are you just looking for space? That is one of our specialties! We can pro-vide you with extra drawers or shelves in places you haven’t thought of. And if your RV just needs a facelift, we can do floors (carpet, tile, lamanent, hardwood), countertops, walls, ceilings; you name it! In past years, we have upgraded thousands of TVs, satellite systems, stereo systems, even side mounted cameras. We have retro-fitted Girard awnings, complete theatre systems, and have even remodeled a party bus! If you can think of it, we can do it!We go out of our way to make you feel at ease while we work on your coach. In most cases you can continue to live in your RV while we are working on it, and we will do our very best to keep it as clean as possible. We will give you an estimate before we start the work, communicate with you during the project, and gladly address any questions or concerns you may have while the work is being done. Barring something out of our control, we are always on schedule too! In most cas-es, you will know how long the work is going to take when you make your appointment. If the winter is your preference to have the work done, we can trans-port your coach for you so you don’t have to brave the icy Central Oregon roads!

Over the last decade or so, we have worked very hard to build a reputation of quality workmanship, profes-sional service, and fair prices. Not to mention, we’re really nice guys! We think that once you come to us, you will see that there is no reason to go anywhere else! That’s why our customers keep coming back year after year!

Greetings to our 1125 members … and a VERY special greeting to 50 new members processed during the past quarter! I’m certain they, as well as our currrent members, are enjoying The Forum

and all that is offered. If approved by the entire membership, the vote be-ing taken now would create a bylaw change to expand our membership base, with your invitation to a friend to become a BAC member.

We welcome aboard our new Vice Presidents, already hard at work with exciting plans and new rally schedules. Region 1 VP Mike Humble is beginning his term after being appointed to fulfill a vacancy, ably as-sisted by Director Bill Sprague. Region 2, Garland Land, with Director Jim Nichols, and Region 4 VP, Rett Porter, with Director Dan Savard are also eagerly wearing their “working shoes.” We sincerely thank our re-tiring VPs, Roy Warren and Gerald Farris, for their tireless dedication.

Our VPs definitely show dedication to their “purpose” with all the recent activities. We enjoyed a very eventful summer of exceptional rallies … in-cluding the outstanding, A Lil’ Bit of Branson International rally, followed by the fall rallies with the glorious Balloons Galore Fiesta as a focal point!

Beaver Coach Sales of OR was very pleased to have acquired the “last” Beaver coach off the production line (after it was first introduced to the Canadian market, incorretly listed as a “Holiday Rambler Milan!”) George & Glenda Curry now are the proud owners of this beautiful new 2010 Contessa Milan, which has been warmly welcomed to Flor-ida sunshine; not to be acclimated to Illinois temperatures until the Currys return home in the spring!

We appreciate the prompt payment of your annual dues and making your choices for receiving Beaver Tales and the annual Membership Directory. If perhaps dues payment has temporarily slipped your mind, please send as quickly as possible and include a seasonal address with applicable dates if it applies to you … it’s very important to have the Snowbird’s migration pattern. I am always available by email, snail mail, or phone. (Info. in officer listing.) If you’ve misplaced your dues notice, please contact George Morlan, Treasurer/Dues Operations (4941 Thornhill Dr – Acworth GA 30101 or by email: [email protected]). Remember, our new fiscal year began on October 1. Wally and I wish you a joyous and thankful holiday season. Our spe-cial prayers are for a healthful and happy year for everyone in 2012 … warm and special wishes to all.
