OCTG main market trends

In order to increase the operational stocks

of hydrocarbons, global oil and gas com

panies are currently increasing production

and exploratory drilling volumes in under

developed onshore and offshore geological

layers. This implies an increase in the depth

and complexity of boreholes and aggres

siveness of the environment - high pressure,

high temperature, sub-surface, offshore oil

and gas, horizontal drilling - while respect

ing strict environmental operational require

ments. Demand for pipes with high-perfor

mance premium connections is following

the current drilling trend and is increasing.

• Threaded and coupled connections

based on standard designs;

• Threaded and coupled premium connec

tions designed for special applications;

• Integral joint connections for thin-wall

pipes;

• Integral joint connections for heavy-wall

pipes.

ТМК FMC PREMIUM

CONNECTION

Application field

TMK FMC is a premium connection with ad

vanced gas tightness properties used for the

construction and operation of vertical and

deviation wells. TMK FMC is especially de

signed for use in corrosive environments.

Design description

TMK FMC offers great gas tightness and high

resistance to tensile stress.

Thread form:

Buttress type thread connection to API Spec

5B as follows:

• Pitch - 5,08 mm and taper -1:16;

• 10° stabbing and compression load

flank provides for easy stabbing, fast

make-up and reduces cross threading;

• 3° tension load flank prevents the pos

sibility of thread jump-out during suffi

cient tensile and bending loads.

Internal metal-to-metal seal:

• radial internal metal-to-metal seal, with

taper 1:10, offers excellent gas tight seal

ing under the most severe stresses. Seal

integrity remains intact even after numer

ous make-ups and break-outs.

Internal torque shoulder:

• 15° internal torque shoulder provides ef

fective protection against overtorquing.

Connection geometry

The connection has a streamlined internal

profile. A special coupling design with a re

duced outside diameter and an increased

bevel improves the clearance of the casing

string in highly deviated wells.

Make-up control

For accurate make-up the pin and box are

specially marked. The connection is cor

rectly assembled when the box mark is

between the two special marks on the pin,

and the face of the box coincides with the

base of the triangle sign on the pin end of

the pipe.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Preparation for casing running.

1.1 All work on casing must be performed

according to an approved plan drawn

up in accordance with the project ob

jectives and reguirements of regulatory

documents.

1.2 Casing running should be performed un

der the control and supervision of the en

gineers and technicians assigned to this

operation or mentioned in the work plan.

1.3 Pipes should be handled with care, faulty

handling may cause damages.

Pipes should be kept in their original

package with protectors until they are

needed.

1.4 If the protectors were fitted with lubri

cant, the lubricant must be washed away

before casing running.

A steam cleaner should be used for the

proprer cleaning of the connections. This will

remove lubricant quickly and easily, as well

as thread compound, should it be the case.

It is important to dry the connection before

applying the thread compound.

1.5 Perform a visual inspection of the pin and

box threads (it is allowed to correct minor

damages, if necessary). Pipes with signifi

cant damages should be discarded.

1.6 Before refitting protectors, they should

be cleaned and dried in accordance with

paragraph 1.4.

1.7 Lifting pipes to the Rig Floor should only

be performed with protectors installed.

Thread compound application

2.1 The pin and box should be made up

using thread compound according to

operation conditions and API RP 5A3 re

quirements.

2.2 A minimum quantity of thread com

pound must be spread between the box

and pin as follows: 2/3 - box, 1/3 - pin.

The minimum weight of thread compound

in grams per one threaded connection must

be calculated using the following formula:

Gcm.min = 10xOD (inches). For example:

Gcm.min = 10x5 =50 g, i.e. 50 g of compound

are necessary for a pipe with a 5 inch OD.

2.3 The compound should be applied to a

cleaned and dried threaded connection.

Apply the necessary amount of com

pound in a smooth manner, including

to imperfect thread and sealing surfaces.

The compound must enter the full depth

of the thread (see Fig. 1,2).

2.4 Recommendations on compound

application:

• use a fresh compound without any for

eign substances;

• apply the compound using a flat nylon

brush;

• keep the compound in a closed upside

down container and mix before use;

Fig. 1

Make-up recommendations

3.1 Stabbing of the pin end to the box of

the previous pipe must be performed

carefully.The pin end should be lowered

very slowly into the box, do not allow the

pin to drop into the box.

3.2 Before making-up, inspect the pin face,

as shown in Fig. 3.

3.3 Rotate the pipe by hand or with the help

of a manual wrench for a few turns (see

Fig.4). If the pipe is too heavy, turn it with

a chain wrench for two revolutions; to

avoid pipe contact and to avoid damag

es, use rags between the chain wrench

and the pipe body.

• in cold weather, keep the compound

stored in a warm area;

• while working, only use the same brand

of compound.

3.4 Before casing running, check the

alignment.

3.5 The connection must be assembled by

an experienced rotary tongs operator

only (see Fig. 5)

3.6 It is recommended to a use a stabbing

guide to prevent thread and seal surface

damage, (see Fig. 6).

3.7 The make-up and break-out speeds of

Premium connections can be found in

Tables 1 and 2.

Fig .5 Fig. 6

Make-up quality control.

4.1 Casing pipes and PREMIUM connections have marks (see Fig. 7) to ensure the high-quality

make-up of the connections in industrial conditions.

A light-paint mark is on the box and two marks are painted on the pin end of the pipes.

©

The first mark indicates the contact of

shoulder surfaces

The second mark indicates the end

of making up with maximum

torqueing

Fig. 7

79

4.2 The connection is made up according to

the marks in two stages:

• Once the closure of the shoulder surfac

es of the pin and box match mark on the

box wi th the first mark on the pin during

the making up;

• Once maximum torquing is reached

when the mark on the box and the sec

ond mark on the pin are matched. This

stage of the make-up must be per

formed with a significant increase in tor

sion torque and minimum wrench turns.

4.3 An additional way to ensure accurate

make-up is the position of the triangular

sign towards the face of the box; the face

of the box must coincides with the base of

the triangle sign on the pin end of the pipe

or stops not more than 5 mm short of it.

4.4 Make-up acceptance

4.4.1 During casing running (one person per

shift) must be responsible for the accep

tance of the make-up results.

4.4.2 The connections may be considered

fully made up if it meets the following

criteria:

There are no excessive wrench, slider or

elevator marks;

the box mark is between the first and

second marks on the pin or reached the

second mark, and;

if the make-up was performed with a

wrench equipped with a torquemeter,

then the achieved torsion torque value

conforms with the torsion torque deter

mined after 10 check make-ups.
