6 Aug 2018

Dear Parents, Guardians, Community Members, Staff and Students,

Parent-Teacher Interviews: The teachers have reported to the Leadership team that they felt the interview afternoon and evening was very beneficial to their assessment approach in classrooms. It was well attended by parents. There was a request from many staff and parents for longer sessions in the future, of around 15 minutes. From next year our approach to this process will be a three way communication, with students taking an active role with parents and teachers. The specialist teachers will also be available should parents want more individualized feedback than a grade on the report which comes home twice a term. The specialist teams do not write comments on reports, however will write references or provide written feedback if requested by individual parents. Please contact them via email if you have a request for more information in regards to your child's progress in Science, Music, French and PE.

Inquiry at West Leeming: The wonderful aspect of education in the 21st century is that in addition to literacy and numeracy still being taught and instructed, a broader range of other skills are also taught. These are often referred to as the skills of life: children growing up now need a variety of skills to be successful learners today. These include:

Decision making Resilience Problem solving Learning how to learn Intrinsically motivated Responsible citizens of the future Effective communicators Assertive and respectful Creative and lateral thinkers Researchers Ability to transfer skills into new ideas and events not experienced before

Learning environments in all schools now provide a balance between "explicit teaching" in the formal instruction of key curriculum areas including sciences, history, the arts, physical education, literacy and numeracy balanced with "explicit teaching" during active engagement where children are trying things out, working alongside others, having to work collaboratively, problem solve and create.

I would like to highlight some examples where this approach is very visible at West Leeming Primary School. In Kindy and Pre-Primary EC1 the teachers are implementing The Walker Learning Approach. The WLA is based upon research about play-based and personalised learning and social constructivism. It is not a program or an inquiry model sitting discreetly or separately from other curriculum areas. It is a total approach to teaching and learning which combines the need for children to be active participants in their learning (through hands-on and creative exploration and investigation) which sits alongside formal instruction. There is explicit teaching and development of not only literacy and numeracy skills and knowledge, but also the range of vital social, emotional and life skills. The teachers are very enthusiastic about the impact this approach has had on enhancing each child's natural love of learning. In 2019, Kindergarten and all Pre-Primary classes will be implementing this approach based on the 2018 trial classes.

Guided Inquiry in the Year 6 classroom curriculum: All Year 6 classes are engaged in real world problem solving and opportunities to engage with the communities to which they belong. Students consider how they can apply what they have learnt during each learning sequence into the future. They take responsibility for their actions, making explicit connections between what they have learned and why they have learnt it. The Guided Inquiry topic for Term 3 is based around the social justice theme, "Caring for Kids”. Our students will learn about the biggest problems facing children around the world. They will learn some persuasive techniques and work in groups to prepare and deliver a slideshow presentation encouraging people to support an aid agency. Your students will learn some literary devices and write a spoken word poem about a cause that they are supporting. They will perform their spoken word poem at the Slamming Social Justice Show. This curriculum, Mappen, will be implemented in Years 3 to 6 in 2019.

NOTIFICATION OF STUDENT MOVEMENT It would be appreciated if the parents/guardians of students from Pre Primary to Year 5 could notify the school, in writing, if their children will not be attending West Leeming Primary School in 2019. This will assist us with planning for the 2019 school year.

During the year, parents/guardians are also asked to notify the School Office if their child/children will be leaving the school. This assists the school in ensuring documentation is collected and forwarded to the next school.

END OF DAY PICK-UP Parents, please make sure your child/ren understand the home-time arrangements that apply to your family. For instance whether they are to walk or ride home, go home with a friend, are being collected by a family member or friend etc. We request that you instruct your child/ren to go to the Front Office in the event that they are expecting you but are unable to find you. By making sure your child/ren know to wait at the Front Office, we will avoid confusion and distress for all.

REMINDER: Our next newsletter will be out on Monday, 20 August. Please email any notices to [email protected] by Friday 17 August, 12 noon.

Do you have any news regarding the achievement of any of our students?

If you are submitting group photos, please make sure all students in the photos have permission to

be published. If you are unsure, please check with the class teacher.

SCHOOL CHARGES & VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS A BIG THANK YOU to all those families who have made payment of the school contribution fees. Our school contribution fee is $60 per student, which equates to $15 per term or $1.50 per week. The money collected provides our school with the opportunity to purchase much needed resources and materials to support the curriculum content for your child’s learning journey at our school. We really cannot emphasise enough how much we appreciate the payments being made by our families and would encourage all those who have not yet made payment to do so as soon as possible. Our collection rates are still much lower than those of our neighbour schools.

If you have any questions relating to your student billing statement please let me know. Our current collection rates for 2018 are highlighted as follows:

Bank: ANZ BSB: 016-268 Account: 3409-01198 Reference: Student’s Name/Class

Payment can be made by the following methods: Cash EFTPOS (machine in front office) Cheque Direct Deposit to the school bank: West Leeming PS

Thank you, Sara Willis Manager Corporate Services

INSTRUMENTAL SELECTION INFORMATION: At the end of this term or early next, all Year 2-4 students will be tested for the opportunity to learn an instrument at this school. The choices are:

Year 3: Violin and sometimes viola- 8 positions Year 4: Cello- 3 positions Year 5: Classical guitar, flute, clarinet, trumpet- 5 positions each.

Selection is based on a variety of factors- The Musical Aptitude Indicator Test, past music grades, consultation with classroom and specialist teachers, family commitment, organisation and persistence skills. There are many benefits in learning an instrument and most of them have to do with brain development as well as personal life skills. If you require more information then search for “Instrumental Music School Services” and follow the Parent prompts or come and have a chat with me in the Music Room.

to Hailey Trutwein for making it into the Girls State Squad as a reserve for the Primary Tennis Bruce Cup 2018.

Hailey is part of the team and will train with the squad, however, she will not travel unless someone pulls out. Miss Hailey is very excited about this opportunity.

PEAC is the Primary Extension and Challenge program which provides part time extension and enrichment for exceptionally able students in Years 5 and 6. The program offers a range of courses that provide the most able students with opportunities for extension and enrichment work that is intellectually challenging.

All students in Year 4 will have the opportunity to be assessed for suitability for the PEAC Program.

Students who are performing well at school are possible candidates for the program. There are some students in Year 4 whose potential is not so easily recognized. There may be students who are underachieving at school and there are some students who demonstrate certain skills and abilities more at home than at school. Together, we can ensure that all students who have the potential for high academic performance are identified.

Testing at West Leeming Primary School will occur on Tuesday, August 7 2018

The test will measure the student’s ability to recognise patterns and to predict with speed and accuracy, as well as measure each child’s ability to apply their knowledge and learning. Parents who do not wish for their children to be tested can opt out by contacting the school in writing.

The scores from the test will be used in the selection of students for PEAC courses.

NUT MINIMISATION AT WLPS We have children throughout the school who have the potential to suffer Anaphylaxis. This is a sudden, severe and potentially fatal allergic reaction to certain foods, especially peanuts and nut products.

It is important to understand that even traces of nuts can cause Anaphylaxis. The sensitivity is such that these children can have a reaction from just touching another child’s hands or sharing toys and equipment with others who have been eating peanuts or nut products.

We ask for your cooperation in minimising the risk to these students by following these simple steps: • Please don’t give your children foods containing nuts or peanuts • Be aware many sweets and biscuits contain traces of these nuts – eg. Peanut butter, Nutella, certain muesli bars, chocolate bars and biscuits • Please encourage thorough washing of hands and face with a damp cloth if your child has eaten these foods before coming to school • Please avoid nuts and peanuts in birthday cakes that may be brought to school • Please be aware of the dangers of cross contamination Children have been taught not to share or accept foods from others and this is a school rule. The school’s aim is to assist the students in the avoidance of allergies.

Our school’s Nut Minimisation Policy is in line with the Department of Education’s Duty of Care Policy and Emer-gency Response Plans are in place for all activities we conduct. We have to date received excellent support from parents and classmates in managing to reduce the risks for these students. We look forward to the same ongoing assistance and understanding on this matter.

Further information regarding Anaphylaxis can be found at www.allergyfacts.org.au and www.allergy.org.au
