Grades K–5 TechnologyBig Ideas Math: Modeling Real Life comes with an innovative and dependable technology package that supports and enhances instruction for teachers and students.

Dynamic Student EditionThe Dynamic Student Edition is a complete, interactive version of the Student Edition. Students have access to interactive explorations, digital examples, virtual manipulatives, Lesson Tutorial Videos (Grades 3–5), and digital exercises from the textbook.

Dynamic Assessment SystemWith the Dynamic Assessment System, teachers can build customizable assessments with Big Ideas Math question banks aligned to the Mississippi College- and Career-Readiness Standards. They can also create and edit their own unique items!

Question types include a variety of technology-enhanced items, such as drag-and-drop, graphing, point plotting, multiple select, multiple choice, and more. Responses are automatically scored except for the essay question type, which allows students to provide explanations of their reasoning.

The reports in this system provide the feedback teachers need to drive instruction. Students complete the assignments online and can receive immediate feedback on their progress.

STEAM VideosSTEAM Videos, which are available for Grades 3–5, allow students to see mathematics in real life.

STEAM Performance Tasks make further connections to the mathematical content. Students learn about animals, electricity, sea levels, constellations, and more!

Math MusicalsMath Musicals are a fun way of bringing music and literature into your math classroom. Big Ideas Math’s own Newton, the dog, and Descartes, the cat, team up to provide educational stories, songs, and animations to enhance student learning.

Math Musicals bring fun into the classroom with engaging songs that support concepts with patterns, rhythm, and rhymes.

Dynamic Classroom The Dynamic Classroom mimics the students’ Dynamic Student Edition, with additional resources and support for teachers. Interactive explorations and examples from the textbook create a 21st-century classroom atmosphere that engages students. Point-of-use Laurie’s Notes guide instruction with motivation suggestions, teaching tips, questions to ask the students, closure strategies, and more!

Skills TrainerThe Skills Trainer is an online interactive tool for skill practice that comes with detailed reports for teachers to gain insight into each student’s proficiency. Students have access to every skill found within the Modeling Real Life series, as well as skills from Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2.

The Skills Trainer can be used to engage students in remediation or as the daily warm-up for the lessons!

Formative CheckThe Formative Check provides teachers with immediate feedback on student progress, making it easy to differentiate and provide support where it is needed the most.

IDENTIFYING EQUIVALENT RATIOS Determine whether the ratios are equivalent. Explain your reasoning.

9. 2 : 3 and 24 : 36 10. 5 : 7 and 20 : 28 11. 3 : 10 and 9 : 25

12. DIFFERENT WORDS, SAME QUESTION Which is diff erent? Find “both” answers.

What kind of relationship is 2 pears out of every 5 fruit?

What kind of relationship is 2 pears per 5 peaches?

What kind of relationship is 2 peaches for every 5 pears?

What kind of relationship is 2 peaches to 5 pears?

Determine whether the ratios are equivalent.

a. 4 : 3 and 20 : 15

You can multiply each number in the fi rstratio by 5 to obtain the numbers in thesecond ratio.

Also, the values of the ratios are equivalent. 4

— 3

= 4 × 5

— 3 × 5

= 20

— 15

So, the ratios are equivalent.

b. 5 : 7 and 10 : 21

You need to multiply each number in theratio by diff erent amounts to obtain thenumbers in the second ratio.

Also, the values of the ratios are not equivalent. 5

— 7

≠ 10 — 21

So, the ratios are not equivalent.

Try It Determine whether the ratios are equivalent.

Self-Assessment for Concepts & Skills

EXAMPLE 3• Work through parts (a) and (b) as shown.• Students may use number sense in deciding if the two ratios in part (b) are

equivalent. They may say that the value of the ratio 5 : 7 is 5 — 7 , which is greater

than 1 — 2 . The value of the ratio 10 : 21 is 10

— 21

, which is less than 1 — 2 . Therefore, the

two ratios cannot be equivalent.

Try It• Circulate as students are completing the exercises. Note the reasoning used

by students.• Ask several students to share their thinking about the exercises, and then ask

other students to discuss what they’ve heard.

Self-Assessment for Concepts & Skills

At this point, students should be very familiar with the learning target, and the success criteria for meeting the learning target. Can students now apply this knowledge to solve a contextual problem? Have students use Thumbs Up to indicate their understanding of each success criterion.

The Success Criteria Self-Assessment chart can be found in the Student Journal or online at BigIdeasMath.com.

Connecting Concepts

Connecting Concepts 149

At the beginning of this chapter, you watched a STEAM Video called “Human Circulatory System.” You are now ready to complete the performance task related to this video, available at BigIdeasMath.com. Be sure to use the problem-solving plan as you work through the performance task.

Performance Task Oops! Unit Conversion Mistakes

Using the Problem-Solving Plan1. You mix water, glue, and borax in the ratio of 3 : 1 : 2 to make

slime. How many gallons of each ingredient should you use to make 0.75 gallon of slime?

You know the ratio of the ingredients in the slime and that you are making 0.75 gallon of slime. You are asked to fi nd the number of gallons of each ingredient needed to make 0.75 gallon of slime.

Represent the ratio 3 : 1 : 2 using a tape diagram. Because there are 6 parts that represent 0.75 gallon, divide 0.75 by 6 to fi nd the value of one part of the tape diagram. Th en use the value of one part to fi nd the number of gallons of each ingredient you should use.

Use the plan to solve the problem. Th en check your solution.

2. You buy yogurt cups and frozen fruit bars for a party. Yogurt cups are sold in packages of six. Th e ratio of the number of yogurt cups in a package to the number of frozen fruit bars in a package is 3 : 2. What are the least numbers of packages you should buy in order to have the same numbers of yogurt cups and frozen fruit bars?

3. Th e greatest common factor of two whole numbers is 9. Th e ratio of the greater number to the lesser number is 6 : 5. What are the two numbers? Justify your answer.

Understandthe problem.

Make a plan.

Solve and check.

Self-AssessmentStudent ownership and accountability for learning is a vital component of fluency with both the Mississippi College- and Career-Readiness Standards and the Mathematical Practices.

Connecting Concepts prepare students for high-stakes assessments by asking questions that use previously learned skills in new contexts. Students also practice with the Problem-Solving Plan so they are prepared to use it during assessments.

Grade 6 STEAM Performance Task

The STEAM Performance Task activity provides students the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of the chapter learning targets. It aligns with what was previewed in the Performance Task Preview from the beginning of the chapter and the Performance Task reference on the Connecting Concepts page.

The Chapter Tests and Quizzes are opportunities for students to demonstrate understanding. The problems include questions that extend concepts.

Every Chapter offers a Chapter Self-Assessment for students to evaluate their understanding of the Learning Targets and their performance perception related to the Success Criteria. Laurie’s Notes provide guidance for supporting all learners’ success on the Self-Assessment.

Grade 6 Chapter Test

Grade 6 Quiz

Self-Assessment opportunities appear throughout instruction for Concepts & Skills and Problem Solving.
